I like to teach because I enjoy the thought of giving my students the self-confidence and self control that Kuk Sool Won teaches, said Wheeler. Its an absolute lifestyle. For six years I've been looking at hundreds of arts. I was trying to find out what was the best one for me. I wanted a traditional art, an art with the use of weapons, joint-locking and throwing techniques, and an art that was challenging. I moved to Mountain home, Idaho and found an art by the name of kuk sool won. So I went to the Base Gym and checked it out. That night I did not expect the Instructor to invite me to join the class, but I did and had a blast. The things the Instructor told me were exciting. Kuk sool won has done wonders for me, It has helped me with self-control, flexibility, and self-defense. One day I plan on being a Master, maybe a Grandmaster. I hope I'm with Jo Kyo Nim Dave for a long time.

Kuk Sool Won, which can be translated as Korean National Martial Arts Association, is a systematic study of all of the traditional fighting arts which together comprise the martial arts history of the Korean nation. As such, Kuk Sool Won is an extremely well-organized system of martial arts which seeks to integrate and explore all aspects of the traditional Korean martial arts. Although Kuk Sool Won as it is practiced today is relatively new, it's roots stretch far and deep to the very beginnings of the history of the Korean people. As students of Kuk Sool, this early history and the ancient traditions upon which our art is founded should be as important to us as the physical techniques themselves, for it is only from our understanding and appreciation of these classical roots that we are able to grow as students and as martial artists Grandmaster In Hyuk Suh spent more than 50 years in single-minded practice and research in order to learn, compile, master and organize the more than 3,608 techniques that comprise KUK SOOL. He founded the Kuk Sool Won (National [Korean] Martial Arts Association) in 1961 and brought it to the United States in 1974. The World Kuk Sool Association, headquartered in San Francisco, California for 17 years, relocated to Houston, Texas in 1991. This Association has since grown to include more than 1,000 member schools in Asia, Europe, Canada, the Middle East, and the Americas, and continues to grow in strength and numbers daily.

Extractions: The Korean martial art called kuk sool was founded by Suh In-hyuk in 1958, and the Kuk Sool Won organization was set up by him three years later. Suh, who now lives in Texas, says he learned esoteric martial arts skills from his grandfather, the last instructor for the Korean Royal Court Army, and later traveled the country in search of other masters of little-known styles. He combined all these techniques, weapons and forms into a unified system which he christened "kuk sool," literally meaning national skills. That is the version of the art's history propagated by Kuk Sool Won members. Many outside the kuk sool establishment, however, refuse to accept the story presented above. One seventh-dan hapkido master in Korea claims that Suh owes much of his art's grappling and joint-manipulation techniques to hapkido and that Suh actually studied with him under hapkido-founder Choi Yong-sul. Kuk Sool Won insists, however, that hapkido and hwarang-do masters merely trained alongside Suh in Choi's "dojang." As such, it was inevitable that the members would share certain techniques. Other martial artists believe much of kuk sool's repertoire originated in China. They cite the style's name, a commonly used generic term for martial arts in Taiwan (Chinese: kuo shu). Many also note kuk sool's similarities to kung fu, including praying-mantis hand techniques, open-palm strikes and the circular moves common in the more advanced "hyung" (forms).
