Tell me when this page is updated Dr. Russell Pruitt Koo Self Defense This is an article that I wrote and published on Thursday, February 28, 2002 in The Daily Tribune newspaper's Special Supplement on Health. Like many people, as the year 2002 approached, I thought about a New Years resolution. It was readily apparent that my physical condition was fading as the years passed. Though I don't have a physically demanding job, the long hours and fast pace had begun to leave me physically exhausted, particularly after a long weekend of call responsibilities. I knew the benefits of regular exercise, but like many, always had excuses not to exercise: "I don't have time", "I 'm too tired", "Exercise is boring". I had observed Master Roger Koo's self defense classes in the past, but never made the committment to enroll. Then a friend of mine convinced me to give it a try. The first class was a real eye opener. Watch out Billy Blanks, Master Koo's class was turbo Tae-Bo. The class began easy enough, a few minutes of stretching and light aerobics, then I heard what was to become an often repeated phrase. "This is just the warm-up." The next 15 minutes consisted of a variety of abdominal exercises which left me wondering if I would make it through the rest of the class. Great, still just the rest of the warm-up. The last half of the class consisted of a series of kicking drills. And I don't mean just kicking, I mean KICKING, like that guy that won the Superbowl with the last minute field goal. Kicking like Chuck Norris movies stuck on replay, kicking over and over for 15 minutes until we changed partners and then I became the one holding the pads. My partner in this exercise had been exercising with Master Koo for 3 years and I could feel the power. When he was done, I realized how out of shape I was, I was tired from just holding the shield.

Tell me when this page is updated Mia Gilstrap Koo Self Defense I have been training in Master Koo's studio since October 1998 and 583 classes later (February 23, 2002) am as ever challenged as the first day I started. This is not to say that I don't build stamina with each session because you certainly do. My point is, his program is set up to where you have the opportunity to constantly strive to better yourself. The other benefits are just as he proclaims: increased flexibility, strength, firmness, and of course, less body fat. I have taken part in some type of exercise program for the greater part of my life. Some following trends, some out of boredom, and all with in mind to attain good physical condition. I aerobicized, walked, ran, stair-stepped, swam, practiced yoga, and weight trained. None of which have I reaped the physical and mental benefits as I have from Koo Self Defense. Frankly, Master Koo's program weaves many of the above excercise into his program. A prime benefit of Koo Self Defense that I have never achieved from any other form of excercise is that I am confident in defending myself if such an event should occur. I may not be able to take down a two hundred pound man, but the element of surprise could mean the difference between life or death. Oddly enough, that which I have come to enjoy most is the comradery shared among the students. Those who come from all walks of life have enriched my life and made me a more well-rounded person.

Everything starts when I was thirteen years old. I was living in Mexico and I had too many problems on the streets, always getting into fights. When I was fifteen, I had a big problem with two boys who beat me up so bad that I never will forget. After that, I started watching movies about karate on t.v. and I wanted to come back with the same thing that those boys did to me, unforgettable! After that event, I continued with my life, I started working in a store. All the time I work lifting heavy things. I wish that whoever is reading my history likes it. Goodbye my friends, and Viva the sports! I'm sorry, but the last thing, I say hi to my family Martha, my brother Alfredo, my brother Steve, my brother Alex. Video Clips Taken April 2002. Started training at Master Koo's studio, downtown Cartersville, Georgia, USA on August 27, 2001 and has done 236 classes to the day of photos and video clips.

I found Master Roger Koo's studio while I was driving through downtown Cartersville on my way to work and I asked my family if I could start the training program with Master Koo. My family agreed and I joined his studio on January 15, 2002. I have been training with Master Koo now for five months now and I personally think that this is the best decision that I have ever made not only for me but for my family as well. If you live in metro Atlanta, I recommend that you come and try Koo Self Defense, it will be worth your while. We have students coming to his studio from different counties. If you think that you do not have the time to take up the training, I am sure that you can make some time as you can come as often as you like and he has the most flexible training program you can imagine, at least 20 adult classes per week. I go to work six days per week and I try to attend at least 4 classes per week. During my white belt, the first week was the toughest, but with regular training it becomes a habit and you develop a self discipline to go to you classes regularly. At every class that I attend, we start with KSD aerobics. There are 5 different KSD aerobics and each time that I attend a class it is different. The reason for that is because each KSD aerobic work on different part of the body and the intensity of each varies. Immediately after the KSD aerobics is the flexibility exercise which is based on yoga stretching movements and after that comes the very tough workout routines, the power drills' which are done against focus mitts and shields.

Tell me when this page is updated Anne Rapp and Ben McMurray Koo Self Defense Driving down Main St. Cartersville, I had often noticed the storefront window of Koo Self Defense. I was curious about the classes for my son as he had expressed an interest in learning self-defense. While walking by, we had observed one of the classes. It looked interesting. I took one of the pamphlets home and called Master Koo. He suggested Ben come in and try a class. I decided to try the class too for the physical fitness potential. I was fairly certain that I would not be able to take the class myself. I have scoliosis, and a history of problems with back pain. I had tried several exercise classes over the years, and not been able to make it past the first few weeks without back problems causing me to quit. We tried the first class. It was very challenging! I liked Master Koo's philosophy of everyone working at their own pace, and setting personal challenges, not competing with others. The classes start with light stretching, then aerobics, more stretching based upon yoga, then anaerobic (power drills which are executed upon focus mitts and shields) punching or kicking. Many of the stretching exercises are ones I had done in physical therapy for my back. My son and I continued to do classes, building our strength, flexibility and stamina. I made it past the first several weeks with no back problems. I have averaged four classes a week since May 1999, and am still going strong. Master Koo changes and adds to the classes to keep them interesting and challenging. He has also worked with me to set new personal challenges.

One of which was to earn a black belt in a Martial art. At the time, I had no idea what that might mean, or where it would take me... Then in April of 2000, I met Master Roger Koo. My name is Jay Platt, and this the story of my involvement in the incredible Martial Art known as Koo Self Defense. Named after its founder and creator, it is undoubtedly unlike anything you've ever experienced. At least it was for me. Koo Self Defense is not the first martial art I've been involved in, by the way, but it will be my last. I still have so much to learn. Let me explain. As a kid, I was intrigued by the martial arts and got my first taste as a 10 year old, in the sport of Judo. I did that for a while, then as happens with kids, lost interest, and moved on to something else. In high school, I wrestled and learned the ins and outs of grappling. I also got in more than my share of fist fights. After graduation, I served in the US Marine Corps until my retirement in 1998. As a Marine, I practiced the Marine Corps' version of martial arts, and also became involved in Okinawa Kenpo Karate Kobudo. I tell you my history to lead to this point. Although everything I did up to the time I joined Master Koo prepared me in many ways, I now know most of it was completely back- ward when it comes to being prepared for real world fighting. And that's where Master Koo comes in.

Tell me when this page is updated Michael Spaulding Koo Self Defense At age 40, exhausted and stressed after work, suffering chronic knee pain, I decided to look for a fitness program. Having failed with a home fitness program I pursued an interest in karate. Most Karate schools have few week-day classes and focus on learning countless katas or forms. On October 11, 2001, I walked into Koo Self Defense Institute. Founder, Master Roger Koo assured me that Koo Self Defense provides a total body work-out, unmatched punching and kicking power, multiple classes. Practical punching and kicking replaced hours of learning katas. My first class was exhausting. A twenty six minute aerobic routine, twelve minute stretching (yoga), was followed by 20 minutes of kicking and punching shields and mitts. Students' punching and kicking power was impressive. Subsequent classes were as exhausting as the first. A variety of aerobic, punching/kicking drills provide a constant physical challenge. Health club aerobic classes are routine, students physically adapt and no longer receive any cardiovascular benefit. After five months of classes, my stamina, strength and work related stress have improved. My resting heart rate has decreased from 76 to 54 beats per minute.

Tell me when this page is updated Roberto Manrique Koo Self Defense My cousin Jorge Manrique invited me to try a Koo Self Defense training which I enjoyed so much that I convinced my dad to let me joined. I began my training with Master Koo on January 4, 2002. I joined the no-belt program as I was not interested in the belt program because for street self defense purposes, one does not need a belt. In order to become a good fighter, the way a student is trained matters more. The way that all the students are trained, I can see how effective they will all be on the streets. They all generate so much hitting power, and it is unbelievable! My cousin, Jorge always encourages me to do my best at every class and I give more hat 100 per cent at every class. This habit of giving 100 percent also translates into everything that I do. I would go to Master Koo's studio with Jorge and he trains practically every day at least two and sometimes three classes a day. Sometimes the classes are so tough, especially the non stops 400 kicks, 1800 or 2520 non stop punching onto focus mitts and shields, it wears me down. Master Roger Koo is truly a great instructor and I like all the classes that I attend which is always challenging my body and mind. Koo Self Defense keeps me in great shape, helps me to lose weight and make me much stronger and fitter than I could do in any other sport. It is truly the greatest total body workout!
