Illini To Kick Off ILLINOIS 3D University plans to honor women athletes from prior to 1974-75 Oct. 16, 2002 ILLINOIS 3D SIGN-UP FORM The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics is proud to announce the Illinois 3D - Dreams, Desire, and Dedication program to "commemorate visionaries in women's athletics." Under the leadership of Dr. Karol Kahrs, the University of Illinois officially began varsity athletics for women during the 1974-75 academic year. But women competed intercollegiately on behalf of Illinois for years prior. "These women played a major role in laying the foundation for our current varsity women's programs," said Athletic Director Ron Guenther. "They are 'unsung players' who deserve to receive the same recognition as those athletes who had the opportunity to earn a varsity letter while they attended Illinois." Associate Athletic Director and Senior Women's Administrator Kelly Landry added, "These women are an important part of the Fighting Illini family. This will be a celebration of women's athletics as we honor those pioneers who set the stage for the competitive teams we enjoy today."

But the weather was also a reminder that pleasure boating in the San Juan Islands is about to kick into high gear. The crew of the Flyin' Scotsman make some adjustments while motoring near Orcas Island. Jeff Larsen / Seattle Post-Intelligencer Click for larger photo In fact, spring in the San Juan Islands is the time and place thousands of boaters shake off the winter attitude and shape up the boat. As the sun gets higher, so do the spirits. From Lopez Island, to Orcas, San Juan, Stuart, tiny Shaw and the state park at Jones Island, pleasure boaters say the remoteness, beauty and wildlife of the San Juan Islands is unmatchable anywhere in the country. So by the thousands they motor and sail into the islands throughout late spring, summer and early fall to take it all in.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale's volleyball team will kick off its home opener this Friday at 7 p.m. against Wichita State in Davies Gym. This is the first in a series of five home matches for SIU. The Salukis, who have won every home opener since the 1994 season, are looking to keep the streak alive by pulling out of their six-game losing slump. According to head coach Sonya Locke, the team has spent this past week working hard to correct the costly mistakes made in the 18 game losing span. "Right now we have been concentrating on what we need to do to win," said Locke. "We've been working hard on defense, passing and serving. I think those are the three things that need to remain strong to be successful on any level." Wichita State, which is lingering at the bottom of the Missouri Valley Conference standings, has recorded a disappointing 1-7 overall mark. However, the Shockers are expected to unleash some surprise attacks on the Salukis with juniors Jan Meloy and Amy Smith. Ranked fifth in the Valley in killing average, Meloy has stunned fans by averaging 3.93 kills/game and 2.56 digs/game, while Smith has put up a shield to compile 32 blocks on the season.

CollegeSports.com - Women's Lacrosse Aggies kick Off 'Make Or Break' Season UC Davis will face three of lastyear's final four at NCAAs, Feb. 12, 2003. DAVIS, Calif. On http://www.collegesports.com/sports/w-lacros/stories/021203aae.html
Extractions: Feb. 12, 2003 DAVIS, Calif. On Mothers' Day weekend of 2002, when West Chester, Longwood, Stonehill and LIU-C.W. Post were battling for the NCAA Division II women's lacrosse title, the Aggies were at home hardly befitting for a team that ranked No. 3 in the national coaches' poll and that had gone undefeated against its D-II opponents. As the only D-II lacrosse school on the West, UC Davis had few opportunities to play the top teams in the South region. The Aggies beat 2001 champion C.W. Post in a memorable 9-8 battle, then swept through North region members East Stroudsburg, Adelphi and Lock Haven. However, without more region games on the schedule, UC Davis was unable to build its case for a berth in the national tournament. The solution for 2003: take on the best, and hopefully, beat the best. "We need to play the strongest teams in Division II. One of the rewards is that we could make the playoffs," says UC Davis head coach
