The funniest group of idiots around.
//The Dumb Bunnies Go to the Zoo// is the funniest book I've come across in a long time.A family of well you guessed it, dumb bunnies takes a trip to the zoo.Confusing a butterfly with a lion, the family releases all the animals to try and save the zoo, but instead causes a huge disaster.Dav Pilkey, creator of the hilarious and ever-popular //Captain Underpants// series, loads the book with oxy-morons that are absolutely hilarious.Parents will get a kick out of this book while reading it to their children.Pay attention to the illustrations for some more laughs.Any book that can be equally enjoyed this much by parents and children alike is a must-have.

The silliest books !
Does any one know that Sue Denim is the ONE AND ONLY DAVE PILKEY!He writes the book under the girls name Sue Denim(pseudonym). Funny huh!!I have to say that my kids can't get enough of these books.
No one needs to look into the detail of the book to see that kids read it and laugh. It's funny, and my kids have had a good laugh for the past years that they have owned these books. They never fail to crack up.

3 1/2* Not Completely Bunny
...but it is fairly funny.Sue Denim's "Dumb Bunnies" series is full of verbal (and visual) puns and other language-based humor, much of it clever, some of it puerile. The humor can be at a fairly low level, and the adjective "dumb" is not used in any redeeming way. Unlike the similarly confused "Amelia Bedelia" character, the bunnies are neither particularly sweet nor well-meaning; unlike "Curious George," there isn't a tradeoff between mischief and heroics; unlike Homer Simpson, the questionable IQ is not balanced by other personal qualities.

Despite these minor objections, Denim does knows humor for the young set.In this story, the "dumb bunnies" confuse themselves and others during a zoo trip, and generally cause trouble for all. A lot of the humor is in the background zoo signs:"Free Admission. Free Ice Cream. Free Popcorn. All For One Low Price," and "Hot Dogs. Chilly Dogs. Room-Temperature Dogs." Dave Pilkey's illustrations are bright and colorful without overwhelming.A good book for around ages 4 to 7.Note: Although for older readers/listeners, Pilkey's "Captain Underpants" books deliver even more bathroom humor (for those who like that--and I know that many kids do), but they are more cleverly designed and plotted than this book. ... A fantastic account of one of the few bright spots of the Iraq War. Well told by the man who lived it and well written and contructed by Kelly Milner Hall.Kudos to both!

Saving the Baghdad Zoo
It is an eye-opening and heart-breaking documentary of the post war collateral damage to the Baghdad Zoo, which was once home to 500 animals. The war is known as the Operation Iraqi Freedom, or the Second Persian Gulf War that was launched on March 20, 2003. Throughout this book, we learn that few hands-on individuals have contributed much of their time and expertise with deep sense of compassion to these left-behind and surviving animals, which were obviously unhappy and unhealthy. Extra care and cure were contributed generously, knowing that there was once a Baghdad Zoo, home to a large range of animals from common to rare to endangered. They have been priceless to the people in Baghdad and the Iraqi nation. The effort to recover the Zoo was not too late.

Together with Major William Sumner, Kelly Milner Halls had compiled various facts and anecdotes along with both heart-breaking and heart-warming photographs that carry us through the process of restoration. Powerful, interesting
What a pleasant surprise. Great writing, powerful images and thoughts. At one point, the main character begins to slip into insanity. He starts to regain his emotional footing when he decides he just doesn't give a damn whether he's nuts or not. Wow.
The writing is crisp, the character is both tortured and honest -- you sometimes feel you're inside his head as he struggles with inner voices, nihilism, loneliness, confusion. To Ventura's credit, the book also stays true to the character, and doesn't betray his basic decency at any point. This is a great book.

The "Behind the Scenes" Heroes
This book is a wonderful collection of short stories of Veterinarians and their patients.The challenges and rewards of being a doctor to the various animals in Zoos and Aquariums. Language is more clinically oriented and would have been better for the layperson with a glossary.However, each story is quite touching.At the conclusion of each story, a mini biography of each veterinarian follows.There are full color photos of the patients featured in the stories.

This is a great book for any aspiring veterinarian, biologist or just plain animal lover.

I highly recommend it.

Enjoyable Read for Anyone!
I purchased this book while I was traveling for a vet school interview and found it to be very interesting.If you are not a vet/vet student, you will still find this book very interesting.It gives you an insight into the world of animal care in zoos that the average visitor probably NEVER thinks about.I found the stories to be interesting and insightful.......

Fascinating stories about treating animals
The San Antonio and the Austin zoos reflect very different personalities. San Antonio is sometimes called the "Riviera of the US"; its zoo is world class with "over 3,500 animals representing 600 species of animals on 56 acres. More than 1,000,000 guests visit the San Antonio Zoo annually - 13,155 of those being children participating in education programs and 80,000 school children coming on field trips."

The Austin Zoo is much more of a no-kill animal shelter, like those that shelter dogs and cats throughout the US. "The mission of Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary is to assist animals in need through rescue, rehabilitation and education. We currently have over 300 animals from over 100 different species at the Zoo."

The Rhino with Glue-On Shoes: And Other Surprising True Stories of Zoo Vets and their Patients is a great resource for understanding animals in either zoo, but over 90% of the animals in Austin have serious problems of one kind or another: three badly abused lions (one from a cramped junkyard zoo, one discarded by a circus, one badly injured in a crash), a vulture without feet, dozens of others requiring imaginative care. At Austin, you can read their personal stories and see the patients apparently thriving under the keepers care.

Rhinotells the stories of other animals saved by imaginative and dedicated care by professional veterinarians; the other Reviews here on Amazon have done a great job of describing the contents of the book. It's heartening for an animal lover to read these stories and to see human compassion at work.

Of course, both the San Antonio and the Austin zoos have dedicated professional staffs. It's wonderful, though, to see the well cared for "patients" in person and to read about how others have been saved as well. We were inspired to increase our donations to two of the no-kill shelters in our area back home.

Really 3 1/2 s
This was a fun cute read. The stories were short and intersting. Nice wide variety of wild animal, reptile, and other aquatic creatures and the lengths the vets who care for them take to heal. I found myself thinking just the other day about the goldfish story- my own 'Spike' is 3 but I'm bit sure I would Fed-Ex him to give him chemo if he was sick. My cat would be different though. Overall if you like animals and are interested in the world of wildlife vets, this is a great book with cute pics in the middle and fun stories.

thought provoking

I devoured this book on a very long transcontinental flight, and found it absolutely fascinating. However, it also inadvertently highlighted an area of concern regarding the ability of zoos to create the appropriate habitat for captive animals. In fact, the question is whether they should be captive at all. The seahorses died because they were transported so they could be part of an acquarium's exhibits. The rhino suffered feet problems he would not have otherwise had in the wild. Some animals suffered injuries related to running into artificial barriers that they would not normally have encountered. The stories may be beautifully written, and it is clear the veterinarians involved are caring and compassionate people. But, I can't help noticing that the unspoken message within the stories is that we are not doing animals much of a favor by keeping them in captivity. ... Read more

Even though I purchased this book "used" (had a 1987 publish date) and from one of your affiliate stores, not to mention I sent it as a GIFT to my adult daughter, it was a great book.I actually read a copy from a friend from Church.It was a quick and easy read, refreshing too.The author connected with you with great storytelling, and humor.I recommend this book to EVERYONE.

Entertaining Christian anecdotes
I'd be pleased to re-read portions of this book while waiting in the lobby of a Christian business or at my in-laws' for the weekend, I'd be disappointed to receive it as a gift.

Interesting anecdotes for leisure reading, colored with some Christian commentary at the end of each story.I found the book an quick, easy, and entertaining set of zoo-keeper stories.However, not quite as insightful and profound as the endorsements from well-known preachers and authors would lead one to expect.Mr. Richmond certainly is an effective story-teller; the subject matter is lively; the spiritual connections are appropriate.When I finished, though, it wasn't a book that I planned to keep on my bookshelf.

Good for all ages
This book has been described as a book for people from 8 to 80.The short stories are true, and people who don't even like to read, like this book.It makes a really nice gift book and a nice one to give people in the hospital.The blue hard cover copy is my favorite one, but they are hard to get.A New View From The Zoo is available in paperback.I know many people who love reading these books. When Gary wasworking at the zoo, he would come home and tell me about these things that happened at the zoo that were so interesting and funny.He began telling these stories when he was speaking at schools and churches.He started writing them down and found that people really enjoyed these animal adventures. If you haven't read it yet, you are in for a treat.

Very well written and easy to read
She covers EVERYTHING.I think it will take more than 6 weeks though!I love how the book is divided into 2 parts - the first part being for the parent.She really does cover everything, not just table manners.I wish everyone, with or without children, would read this book.

This is a delightful book. I got it for a friend who has four children and read it through before giving it as a gift. It is thoughtful, engaging, humorous, and filled with the importance of communicating love when teaching children. Herriot fans will enjoy...
This book and it's sequel is a treat for anyone who's enjoyed James Herriot. Whereas Mr. Herriot's practice concentrated on domestic animals, Mr. Taylor has worked with zoo and other wild animals. Like Herriot, Taylor began his practice before some of the more helpful advances of modern veterniary medicine (at one point he describes trying to treat zoo animals before the invention of anesthetic dart guns!). And like Herriot, Taylors stories are both wonderfully funny, at times and touchingly poignant at others. He's also had some amazing adventures and narrow scrapes here and there, more often with unscrupulous wild animal owners, than with the animals themselves. Highly recommended.

Zoo Vet
This is the best book I read. David Taylor sure did a simply perfect job. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could.

A Zoo Vets Life...
The title of this book explains most of it, a vet who handles wild zooanimals.It covers the problems a vet encounters when taking care of nondomestics animals, and also mentions how various people feel about animalsin general. A WONDERFUL COUNTING, RHYMING TRIP TO THE ZOO!
TWO AT THE ZOO is a Great Read Aloud!

My favorite two-year-old keeps asking me to read TWO AT THE ZOO over and over. He loves the spiders, eagles, alligators, penguins and other colorful animals.

Two at the Zoo is a delightful rhyming counting book about a grandfather taking his grandson to the zoo. The verse is so natural and fun to read that kids will want to hear it again and again and AGAIN!

I recently went to a book signing by Danna Smith for Two at the Zoo and a local zoo had brought in a tarantula. Danna held the tarantula, its furry legs crawling across her gloved hand. Kids and adults snapped pictures and leaned close to look. Danna read her book and signed many copies. She was raised in a home where having snakes, skunks and deer around was normal. Her father still has hundreds of snakes and trains falcons. Writing about wild animals comes naturally to her--as does beautiful rhyming words.

Two at the Zoo would make a great Father's Day Gift as well as a wonderful read aloud to any child who loved animals and counting. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!

Great Book for Emergent Readers
This book is perfect for a new reader.The repetitive text allows a child to master sight words while reading enjoyable story.The vivid illustrations of the animals give picture clues to the new reader to help him or her figure out the unknown words.The rhyme patterns also help develop phonic skills.Perfect for kindergarten and first grade!

Baby got a "smack"?
Not only did my kids seem very bored by this book, but I was a little disturbed that one of the very few suggestions of activity was a mother monkey "smacking" her baby.

Not a favorite
There's isn't much of a story to this repetitive book.Sure, there's lots of animals in this zoo and they all 'look back' at the main character after she looks at them, but it's not enough to make it interesting.My 2 and 4year old weren't impressed and they LOVE books.

Great read-aloud rhythm, brilliant illustrations
As a picture book, this is great to read to your toddlers and preschoolers.And a true joy is listening to your early readers work through it, because it is full of phonics sets (for example, roaring/soaring/snoring/boring and prowling/howling/growling/scowling).The illustrations are great, and I love the size of this book.

Daughter loves it

Loved it!

Cute, engaging story!
My kindergartener loves this book and selected it for her grandma to read to her K class on a visit. The class was thoroughly engaged -- I'd say "on the edge of their seats" except they were sitting on the floor :-) Anyway -- they got all excited with what they knew was coming when the main character says of her zookeeper friends, "Oh yes -- they know just what to do if anything ever goes wrong at the zoo!" The entire class fully enjoyed the rest of the book too -- "Look, here comes the alligator!" We have a large kids' library, and this one is a frequent request. (And yes, the illustrations are lovely.)

I bought this for my three grandaughters, age 3 and twins age 2.I like to buy books that reflect their experiences, and I gave them this after a trip to the zoo--they enjoyed it.Cute story and attractive illustration.

Very Disappointing
While this book has nice watercolor illustrations and a good premise, it lacks plot and substance.Our heroine tells the zookeepers that if anything ever goes wrong at the zoo they can bring the animals to her house.So, when a flood occurs, the animals appear at the doorstep.Hilarity could ensue, but it doesn't.The animals just go back to the zoo in the morning.The only indication that there might be a problem with a zoo in a house is the image of Mom filling a cleaning bucket on the last page.It's an idea that got started and but never finished.I guess it could be good for a very small child, but I don't think the illustrations would appeal to the very young, lacking bright colors.An older child who can appreciate the art will want more story.

Illustrations are wonderful
The book is worth buying just to look at the illustrations alone.

Great appeal to anyone who enjoys going to the zoo or for kids planning their first trip.

Fun early readers!
My daughter read through all the Eloise Level 1 series of readers a month ago, and we revisited them recently because she told me she missed stories about Eloise! Well, the actual collection of Eloise stories (not the early readers) are still beyond my five-and-a-half year old's reading ability, but these make for great entertainment and revision!

In "Eloise Visits the Zoo", Eloise and her beloved and ever devoted Nanny don their safari best and visit the zoo during a summer day. The story captures Eloise's fun-loving nature and the illustrations enhance the text. Children will love the beautiful illustrations of the various animals at the zoo. Typical of level one readers, this book has slightly more challenging vocabulary, and longer sentence structure. What's more fun than the zoo?
Beginning readers who love wild animals will fall in love with A Trip to the Zoo by Karen Wallace.

Two brothers are taken by Mom to the zoo to see up close all the animals they had seen in books and movies. They get to see and even touch some of the animals, and their wish to take one home with them is somewhat satisfied by "sponsoring" an animal at the zoo.

At home, they thank Mom by painting pictures of all that they saw, so that they could all have their very own zoo!A "Picture word list" provides a valuable review.

A book filled with outloud chuckles!
I have an almost three year old and we found this story at the library and she LOVES it!Our daily storytimes are wonderful and only two days after getting the book, she can predict which animal is next and loves to repeat Nurse Beluga's phrase, "This is a hospital, not a zoo!"Its a great story for adventure and whimsy, even if you do not have a child in the hospital to worry about.
