CHAPTER I. BRANCH I.-PROTOZOA (Animalcules, Infusoria, Monads, etc. ). GENERAL CHARACTERS OF PROTOZOANS.-Few of the Protozoans can be seen without the aid of the microscope; they are microscopic animals or animalcules. One of the simplest forms is a very minute being called Amroba. It is to be sought for in standing pools, where it lives on the leaves or stems of ~ubmerged plants or in the mud or ooze at the bottom. Taking up a drop of w~ter from the bottom of such a pond and placing it under high l)owers of the microscope, we may, after close examination, detect a very small moving mass of jelly-like substance or protoplasm. As it glides over the glass the sides of its body bulge out, or it suddenly throws out lobes or projections from various parts of its body as if it were falling apaJ t; then it retracts these transparent ruot-like processes, which are called pseudopodia, or false feet, and becomes smooth and rounded, like a drop of thick syrup. Product Description

The Zoology of Tapeworms was first published in 1952. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions.

Leaders in helminthology have long recognized the need for such a work as this—a comprehensive study of tapeworms. This definitive treatise describes the tapeworms of the world—their gross and microscopic anatomy, their physiology, life cycles, and relationships to hosts, the theories of origin and evolution, and the various systems of classification that have been applied to tapeworms.

Detailed, systematic descriptions and keys for the identification of all known genera of the world and species of North America are provided. Emphasis on the theoretical significance of various aspects of tapeworm zoology is balanced by a wealth of detailed description. A bibliography up to 1950 is appended.

A review of the literature on each topic is incorporated in the discussions. Starting with a few fragments of information a century or more ago, the literature on the subject of tapeworms has appeared in a wide range of journals and books published in at least five languages. Many of the older publications are, for practical purposes, unavailable, and a number of the more recent journals are difficult to obtain. Therefore, the consolidation of this large body of scattered literature in a single volume will be of value to scientists in many fields.

In addition to filling a basic need for helminthologists, this book should serve as a reference work for parasitologists, zoologists, ecologists, clinicians, medical research workers, and students and workers in various fields of biology.

There are 419 text illustrations from drawings of species by the authors.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Zoology," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Zoology in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Zoology when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Zoology, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
