Who was Zodiac? A serial killer who claimed 37 dead. A sexual sadist who taunted police with anonymous notes.A madman who was never apprehended. This is the first, complete account of Zodiac's reign of terror. Is he still out there?Amazon.com Review
"SHE WAS YOUNG AND BEAUTIFUL BUT NOWSHE IS BATTERED AND DEAD. SHE IS NOT THE FIRST ANDSHE WILL NOT BE THE LAST." Few cases in the history of true crime are as colorful and intriguing as that of Zodiac, the bizarre gunman in an executioner's hood who hunted the streets of San Francisco in the late 1960s and sent dozens of taunting letters to the police. Robert Graysmith provides ample details about the police investigation, including the full text and photos of most of the letters. Zodiac is an excellent starting point not only for the casual reader, but also for those interested in retracing the author's steps in order to pursue their own ideas about who the killer may have been. This book has been praised by the San Francisco Chronicle, the very paper in which the Zodiac's eerie messages and cryptograms were published: "Graysmith's taut narrative brings the horror back with jolt upon jolt." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ZODIAC by Robert Graysmith
"Zodiac" by Robert Graysmith has been on the best seller list for many years.Because of the release of the David Fincher 2008 movie,
it has been reprinted in paperback, together with its sequel "Zodiac Unmasked."Both works by Mr. Graysmith are well researched and written and highly recommended.

What is so special about this edition of Robert Graysmith's "Zodiac" is that it is the original and only hardcover pressing. All the other editions, including the current one with the colorful Golden Gate Bridge picture, are paperback and not ideal for the serious Zodiac researcher.

In addition, the original "Zodiac" hardcover edition has pictures which do not appear in any of the paperbacks.

One word of frustrating news about the hardback edition, which this review is based on:it is very hard-to-find.Expect to pay at least $30.00 or more for a copy.It is well worth the money.Anyone who wants to study Mr. Graysmith's "Zodiac" and "Zodiac Unmasked" should have a hardback of both titles. The latter, published in 2002, is easier to find then the former. However for a serious Zodiac researcher, having hardback copies of both editions is a must.

The text is the same as those in the paperbacks. For someone who wants something to read after viewing the Fincher movie, by all means, buy the paperback editions of "Zodiac" and "Zodiac Unmasked."
They are available through Amazon.com.In addition, Amazon.com may be your ONLY source to find the original hardback editions. Both Graysmith books are very well written, detailed and documented that the reader will find the material very intersting - perhaps even addictive for more Zodiac books.Unfortunately, there are not too many titles available, which carry my recommendation.Just key in the tag line "Zodiac" and you will find my other reviews and recommendtions on books about the Zodiac killer, all available from Amazon.com.Zodiac Unmasked: The Identity of America's Most Elusive Serial Killer Revealed

1-0 out of 5 stars Have you heard of tunnel vision?
This book is very disappointing.I was even appalled at the nerve of the author to re-release this book and identify the man he THINKS is the Zodiac killer after the man's death. The author actually demonstrates how an investigation can get botched with tunnel vision.A prime suspect is the sole focus and evidence is distorted any way it can be to "prove" this suspect is the Zodiac killer. There were other possible leads and suspects that were discounted by the author.

By the time you reach the middle of the book, you'll see it is already obvious who the author THINKS is the Zodiac killer. The rest of the book discounts other leads and suspects and focuses on "evidence" that "proves" the author has identified the Zodiac Killer.Very disheartening.

It should be noted the author is not an investigator and the identity of the Zodiac killer remains a mystery to this day.The author has NOT proven his "identification" of the Zodiac killer. This book is a shame.

3-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening of the facts
Graysmith recounts the timeline of the unsolved serial murders of the "Zodiac" killer. I knew that Zodiac is still free, but it never really hit me that he's among us until after I read this book. This person (or possibly more than one person) is working with somebody, sleeping with somebody, cared for by somebody. Could be you. Could be me. Nobody is working on the case anymore. He's intelligent. He's possibly still killing. He's good at what he does (however horrible and gruesome it is). He's free.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book- not great condition
The shipping was a little slow, but it came within the time frame, had quite alot of water damage, but it was still readable so i guess thats all i needed it for. would buy from seller again.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent true crime
Robert Graysmith was the cartoonist on one of the papers who received letters from the serial killer named Zodiac. He was drawn to the case and went on to carry out his own investigations into who was Zodiac( for the record they never did capture him) yet Graysmith had his own ideas into who was Zodiac. For anyone who watched the recent film this is a must read. Chilling. ... Read more

Product Description

Zodiac, the brilliant second novel from the New York Times bestselling author of the The Baroque Cycle and Snow Crash, is now available from Grove Press. Meet Sangamon Taylor, a New Age Sam Spade who sports a wet suit instead of a trench coat and prefers Jolt from the can to Scotch on the rocks. He knows about chemical sludge the way he knows about evil—all too intimately. And the toxic trail he follows leads to some high and foul places. Before long Taylor’s house is bombed, his every move followed, he’s adopted by reservation Indians, moves onto the FBI’s most wanted list, makes up with his girlfriend, and plays a starring role in the near-assassination of a presidential candidate. Closing the case with the aid of his burnout roommate, his tofu-eating comrades, three major networks, and a range of unconventional weaponry, Sangamon Taylor pulls off the most startling caper in Boston Harbor since the Tea Party.
Amazon.com Review
Believe it or not, some readers find Zodiac even morefun than Neal Stephenson's defining 1990s cyberpunk novel, Snow Crash.Zodiac is set in Boston, and hero Sangamon Taylor (S. T.)ironically describes his hilarious exploits in the firstperson. S. T. is a modern superhero, a self-proclaimed ToxicSpiderman. With stealth, spunk, and the backing of GEE (a non-profitenvironmental group) as his weapons, S. T. chases down the bad guyswith James Bond-like Zen.

Cruising Boston Harbor with lab testsand scuba gear, S. T. rides in with the ecosystem cavalry on his40-horsepower Zodiac raft. His job of tracking down poisonous runoffand embarrassing the powerful corporations who caused them becomesmore sticky than usual; run-ins with a gang of satanic rockfans, a deranged geneticist, and a mysterious PCB contamination thatmay or may not be man-made--plus a falling-out with his competent("I adore stress") girlfriend--all complicate his mission.

Stephenson/S. T.'sirreverent, facetious, esprit-filled voice make this near-future talea joy to read. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Half and half
The first 100 pages were very enjoyable reading with a lot of creativity, original characters, humor, and fast-moving action. After that, the writer gets bogged down in finishing his storyline--with only flashes of his original self occasionally coming up.He plods to the end.I was glad the book was over. His writing style is to string thoughts together--a reader needs to pay close attention.Unfortunatley, for me, some of his thoughts come out of leftfield. The house getting blown up with a grenade comes out of nowhere. And the barge being divided up into rooms was a stretch of the imagination. Nevertheless, If you can tolerate these, there's a lot of creativity to be enjoyed in this book.I gave this book 3 stars.Brilliant at the beginning but dry in the end. This author is worth a second read--probably Snow Crash for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Low-Tech Fun
Zodiac is different from Stephenson's other books - it's short (only 300 pages), low tech (although there is a little chem discussion), and focuses primarily on one character.A quick, fun read and an interesting commentary on environmentalism and terrorism, considering that it was written in '88.I love its tribute to Boston, but, frankly, if I didn't know the area so well I might not have enjoyed the book as much. It's not Snow Crash or Crypto, but it is definitely worth the read.

2-0 out of 5 stars 2 stars for some humor
I listed to the audio version of the book thru [...].Narration was very good.I really didn't like the main character. After a while, I felt like the author was trying to create a Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas for the younger generation. This time without an attorney and with Nitros Oxide. But the scenes weren't nearly as funny as Hunter S. Thompson. Instead of Rolling Stone Mag paying all the bills, it's a "environmental" organization. There is some cool science explained for the non-major. After a while I got tired of the "Corporate Imperialism with guns is the ultimate evil" meme.I didn't really didn't recognize much of a plot.

Worth reading if you want some laughable insight into the thinking of a hypothetical enviromental true believer with a chemistry degree.

4-0 out of 5 stars Impressively accurate, timely, and good
Overview:

Marketed as an "Eco-Thriller", this book notably precedes (both temporally and in quality) Michael Crichton's State of Fear, although the books have some surface similarities. Perhaps the most significant difference is that this book is fun, while the latter is not so much.

Clear similarities exist, as well, between this work and the author's first work, the classic "Big U" and his, perhaps, most famous one, "Snow Crash". Those who enjoyed these two books will probably enjoy this one as well, and vice versa.

A. Plot

The plot of the book needs to be especially strong, since this book is marketed as a thriller. So a main question is whether the plot is strong enough. In this book, it is.

Sangamon Taylor, known as S.T. is the narrator and protagonist, who collects money from an environmental group in order to maintain his daily activities, which consist of terrorizing (in a soft way) the employees of said companies for the actions of their corporate boards.

The plot is developed well, if a bit slow for many people's tastes. The ending is satisfying and conclusive, and the beginning has what many thrillers need. A quick burst of action that get you committed to the story and the characters quickly so that the background information doesn't come too soon.

SPOILER WARNING:

In the middle of the book, the plans of the ecologically negligent company are revealed. The one piece of scientific inaccuracy of which I am aware in this book is that the company could have accidentally released the second strain of bacteria, which make the PCB's, instead of consuming them. In reality, this almost could not have happened. But, charmingly, it wouldn't HAVE to. The fact is, as S.T. explains, thermodynamics will often determine the direction of a chemical reaction. If there is enough inorganic chloride around, and the bacteria have appropriate enzymes, they could easily synthesize some PCB's, even if they are the bioremediation strain. It is only unfortunate that Neal Stephenson got this part wrong, because about ten pages early, bells started going off in my head, and I thought, "Uh oh..."

END SPOILER

B. Characters

Most of the characters in the book have been called stereotypes by many reviewers here on Amazon. There is a little truth to this. I wouldn't say, however, that they are so much stereotypes as they are undeveloped. S.T. is a loner, and he spends most of the novel in his own company. The other people in the book are something of a mystery to S.T. He doesn't really seem to enjoy the company of other people, and is willing to avoid them when possible, for the most part. Since the book is told from his perspective, it is unsurprising that there are few details about them. This is clearly not a result of a lack of talent on Mr. Stephenson's part, as his earlier (and even more so, his later) book(s) demonstrate. This has to be seen as a willful choice on his part.

Therefore, the characters (and the characterization) are strong, coherent, and consistent with the protagonist's point of view, and are well done.

C. Setting

The novel is set in Boston, irredeemably so. This could have been otherwise set in Seattle, San Francisco, or maybe Antwerp. But that's about it. You need a combination of biotech, industry, hippies, and harbors. The setting directly and compellingly adds to the book, which is a nice touch.

D. Theme

The theme of the book is that the ruthlessness of negligent companies can only be countered by ruthlessness of individuals who are committed to preserving the environment. A second theme, that accusations of terrorism are not the same as actually BEING a terrorist, is quite timely, despite the fact that it was written some twenty years ago.

E. Point of View

The point of view is first-person, centering on S.T. For a careful and insightful analysis of this, find "Unnecessary" Quotes "'s review. He or she points out the pitfalls in this narrative style, particularly for Neal Stephenson. Acknowledgement of this can be seen in Stephenson's later avoidance of this perspective.

F. Aesthetics

The aesthetics require some work. This is perhaps the biggest difference between Neal Stephenson's early work and his more contemporary books. In this book, he hasn't yet developed his ability to describe the settings that will be so key to later works like the Baroque Cycle and Anathem.

Conclusion:

The book is well-written, well-characterized, and entertaining. The plot is developed with skill and artistry. Aside from a single technological inaccuracy (which was actually not only unnecessary, but counterproductive - see the spoiler region for details), the story is quite accurate as far as technology goes.

The story moves a bit slower than many thrillers, but it has other strengths, such as S.T. who is an amusing character, and insight into popularly unavailable knowledge about how ecological guerillas think, that more than make up for it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
Became a fan of Stephenson's when I picked up Cryponomicon on a whim about 8 years ago.I thought the cover looked cool. I've enjoyed everything he's written since that time. This was my first foray into his earlier work having just finsihed off Anathem.I was pleasantly surprised that his depth, wit, mind, and knack for making data and fact intetesting is present in his earlier work.I think anybody who enjoys Stephenson will like Zodiac.I wouldn't consider myself even a mild environmentalist, but am still quite enthralled with this novel. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Astounding job on Zodiac signs from a fresh perspective.
If you like Linda Goodmans version of Astrology, then i am sure you will like Bill tierney's version. He provides the same fresh perspective on each sign, and showing new things we may not have understood about other astrology sides from a birds eye view.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for beginners.
I am newly into astrology. This was a good book for newbies like me.Had good overall descriptions.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the information you'll need
Never have I read a book with so much information on the Zodiac. Not only does it tell us the personality traits and qualities of each sign, it also allows to see why.In this book you will read about The elements of each sign, and the modes of each sign.
This book allowed me to understand the Zodiac signs in a fuller and deeper way than I had hoped. It shows us every angle of the Zodiac not just the basics.
It compares signs to reality, allowing us to understand more fully. This book helped me think of the Zodiac in a more serious way.I enjoyed the analogies it gave, without these, I probably would have been bored.
It listed fascinating facts, ones I had never heard of.It explained the uniqueness of each sign, better than any source ever has.
A great read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Top notch
This book is well written, thoughtful, and informative. The author fleshes out the meanings of the twelve zodiacal signs and discusses their interrelationships.I read a lot of books on astrology and this one stands out for the clarity and enjoyableness of its writing.I would highly recommend it to beginners as well as advanced students. It is a model for how to present the horoscope symbols to those unfamiliar with astrology. My only regret is that I did not write it myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Top-Notch Book on Sign Combinations
Bil Tierney's latest book offers something seldom found in others: information about sign-to-sign detailed descriptions about sign pairings, like Taurus with Sagittarius, or Leo with Virgo.Yet such hard-to-find astrological material is here explained in ways that shed additional light on the qualities of both signs involved.

All Around the Zodiac is written in a clear and enjoyable style, and is loaded with insightful ideas. It is NOT a Sun-sign book, although parts of it could be used as such. The general influence of a sign on a house cusp (i.e., our "Leo" house) is discussed, along with samples of how natal planets may behave in every sign.I appreciated the author's effort to compare and contrast each sign with its ruling planet.

The introductory chapters on elements and modes are very informative. Each sign's main themes are also described, often in humorous, but thought-provoking ways.I feel this book is a major contribution to better understanding every sign's motivation. It's a practical, down-to-earth resource that should be read from cover to cover (rather than just for the parts that only apply to one's chart).Check it out, and get ready to learn a lot from a pro who apparently has been at it for a long time. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Wait. What?
This is the story of how Johanna loses everything.

After Vanessa is brutally attacked and disfigured, Jo is told to go seek Midheaven to find Jaden Jacks to fix the changeling. Right Now. And then booted out of a moving vehicle as Warren does not want her around to attract the Shadows attention.

There's no help from the Master Comics crew or Skamar, but she miraculously finds her way into the land of myth and legend anyway. Which might have qualified as a victory if things weren't so confusing and hard to follow when she got there. The downstairs is a typical Western saloon, but I'm baffled at the layout of the upstairs, which becomes greatly important to understanding the action. It's a rare complaint for me to say this about any author, much less one who usually writes so vividly, but the description was simply lacking and nothing made much sense.

After verifying that JJ is not and has never been in Midheaven, Jo returns. But Warren sends her back again, insisting that JJ is there and that only he has the answer she needs. And Jo, for some unexplained reason, becomes convinced he's correct in spite of her own experiences. And goes back just to be followed by JJ, which proves to be pointless as far as getting a straight answer to her question.

With Ben out of the picture, Jo tries to reignite Hunter's interest in her, with mixed results. He has Dark Matters that preoccupy him and draw him away. And Regan returns to ruin it all as best she can because she's good at her job even with her skin falling off. (Note: for some reason Pettersson spends this book convinced that Regan is a Leo despite previous books stating she's a Cancer and Lindy is a Leo. It adds to my confusion and makes me doubt the author when such a basic important character fact is suddenly wrong.)

It's worth reading for the Hunter & Jo and Regan & Jo bits, and to establish something of Midheaven, which will certainly reappear. However, it's nowhere near the best, and feels very much like either the editor or author didn't care.

4-0 out of 5 stars Zodiac Series: An end to the beginning
This entry in the series is an entertaining tale filled with superhero fights, sex, and mega-revelations.A few loose ends from earlier in the series are tied up, killed, or otherwise rendered obsolete through the plot of this book, while a few new ones appear.I enjoyed this book immensely, and will be going out to buy the 5th book later today.

I am concerned that Vikki Pettersson may be taking her main character down the increasingly poorly written soap-opera world of Rachel Caine's weather warden, who shares a certain first name with our favorite Archer.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, but....
While I've liked the first few books in the series, I'll admit... the charm has begun to wane for me. The general idea of the series has been done before, but it had been a while since I'd seen anyone do it with a zodiac spin to it. Unfortunately this book has killed off a lot of the series' charm for me.

As you know, Joanna has caused her changeling harm that can't be healed in the last book. This means no more Manuals of Light for the good guys, which means that the Agents of Light are at a *serious* disadvantage. Joanna has to figure out a way to fix her changeling & restore the balance... but unfortunately some nasty changes are about to happen.

I don't mind a bit of "kick the character around", but that seemed to be all this book was really about. Joanna reverts back to her old form of being standoffish & distant from the other characters, which was a bit frustrating for me. Plus as others have said, Joanna keeps forgetting that she has to act like Olivia, which wouldn't be an irritating thing if the author had addressed that. (Maybe people will finally start asking questions in the next book?)

The bottom line is that while I'm willing to give this series another chance with the next book, I'm just irritated that Joanna's character hasn't grown any. Maybe the events at the end of this book will change that, maybe they won't. I'm not asking her to turn into someone completely different, but a little growing would be nice.

If you've followed the series this far, you might want to check this out from the library before plunking money down on a purchase. If you haven't read the series at all, don't start here. You won't know what is going on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reading this book is like witnessing a train wreck
Let me start out by saying that I am generally not happy with books that make me sad and this book made me sad and angry. That being said, it also made me laugh a lot.I feel sad and angry about what happened to J/O and I think a lot of that stems from how everyone on the super side treats her.One would expect the bads to want to do her harm, but it seems like the people who were supposed to have her back didn't.Most of what happened to J/O could have been avoided had Warren been more upfront about things. And how many more times is J/O going to get kicked out of the troop before she finally just goes off on her own?Honestly, I think that Warren feels that once J/O comes into her full potential, she'll try to make a play for leadership.I also think that before book 4, his worries were unfounded.
I'm also upset because as a general rule, I want my super powered people to become more powerful, not less. And VP has been snatching power from J/O since book 2.
After all that, I am still anxiously awaiting book 5 to see how VP is going to dig J/O out of the hole she put her in.
Quite frankly, book 3 and 4 gave me the feeling of Sir Aurther Connen Doyle, in that he kept upping his price on the Sherlock Holmes stories because he didn't want to have to write them anymore.Though I hope I'm wrong about this.
If you asked me, would I recommend this series (which this is afterall for), I would say that as aggrivating as the story is at times, it is definately worth the read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unimaginable Fun
Overflowing with razor-sharp wit and lightening speed action, "City of Souls: The Fourth Sign of the Zodiac" takes readers on a journey into the thinly veiled world of the modern day Superhero. Focusing on those beings that quietly stalk the cities to protect us, Pettersson continues to highlight the life of new inductee, Joanna Archer. Joanna and those like her have mastered the ability to hide in plain sight, each living dual lives in order to protect their true identities and superhuman talents as they rise to meet the challenges of constant battle.

With a clear passion for creating intricate imagery, Pettersson infuses her creation with frequent, unexpected twists, which will appeal to more than the typical fan of paranormal fantasy. Readers will find themselves eager for the next installment, looking forward to the unique and remarkable world that only Pettersson can offer.

5-0 out of 5 stars If your a fan of Saint Seiya buy this!!!!!
I enjoyed this volume of Saint Seiya very much! I know there are names that have been changed like Death Mask is called Mephisto and his attack was changed from Sekishki MeKai Ha to Underworld Portal Confinement. Whats important is that the story was not changed or altered because if it was that would have ruined Kurumada Masami's masterpiece!!

4-0 out of 5 stars not the best translation, but still Saint Seiya
This is a great Manga!!! Anyone who likes saint seiya should definitely give it a look. There are some bad translations, and its up to you if you can stomach the many changes.
Saints have been changed to Knights (which isnt really a big deal because its the same in the other countries)
Saori's name has been changed to princess sienna(princess???)
Cygnus has been changed to swan
jabu has been changed to jab the unicorn
Mitsumasa Kiddo has been changed to lord Nobu
cosmo has been changed to universe (although they occasionally slip up and say cosmo)

At first the new names feel like knives piercing your eyes, but it wont bother you that much, the great story and artwork is intact. So I definitely reccomend this book, but if you cant stomach the translations I think you should either buy a different language version or the great saint seiya dvds by adv.

translation - C
The translation is good but the name changes are a definite negative, fortunately the comic only adopts the name changes from its cartoon network cousin...You wont find any saints, err knights saying dude here!
Artwork - B+
The artwork is crisp and I like the style Kurumada uses. Youll definitely see some eyecandy. I detracted some points for the crazy cloth desings.
Story - B
the plot moves a little slow but slowly start to pick up.

4-0 out of 5 stars story is beginning to move again
I consider the second book as a filler between 1 and 3. This is where the story gets picked up. One of the central character is introduced, and the real conflict begins.

3-0 out of 5 stars characters introduced...not much else.
The book 2 is used to introduce three more important characters to the story. There are lots of action, but not much else. It's not essential that you get this book to understand future books because there wasn't any new development in the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quit Whining
Look, it's great that you know how to read Japanese or read the Spanish version, but most of us don't or didn't. Masami Kurumada is one of the very best and most creative story teller there is. I don't think the essence of his story is getting lost. Some existential topics like what it means to be a being in the universe and relationship between cosmos and self is discussed, but never in a boring way (Marin crushes a rock to illustrate this point). It's a fantastic book, and it sets up a greater story line.
My Japanese friend used to tell me about this book, and I'm so glad to finally have something I can read. If you are intested in getting a great book that's fun and exciting; pick this up. ... Read more

Product Description
The San Francisco Chronicle hailed Robert Graysmith's Zodiac as "provocative...the taut narrative brings the horror back jolt upon jolt."

And that wasn't even the whole story.

When the Zodiac killings began in 1968, Robert Graysmith, employed at the San Francisco Chronicle, became fascinated with the case. Before the murder spree was over, Zodiac claimed 37 victims. His mocking notes to authorities dared them to catch him. They never did. Now after following the clues for thirty years, Graysmith provides the final chapter-with hundreds of never-before-published photos and the only complete reproduction of the Zodiac letters. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Where to begin..
Robert Graysmith has spent much of his professional life in the quest to convict Arthur Leigh Allen of the Zodiac killings.Well, convict is probably too reasoned a description.Libel, suggest without facts, accuse without merit would probably be closer to the truth. There is a problem of course. That being that in 40 years of "investigating" Graysmith has not produced one shred of physical evidence that ties Allen to the crimes. He has established that Leigh Allen was strange cat, but that doesn't really distinguish him much in California does it?Graysmith weaves a florid yarn of distortions, half-truths and downright lies to convince the reader that there is a case here where frankly none exists. The author soft-pedals the unpleasant reality that neither the partial dna, finger or palm prints collected through the letters from Zodiac and the crime scenes match his suspect. In addition, Allen's handwriting (right or left-hand) does match any known Zodiac sample. Police tossed Allen's trailer, cab and home on more than one occasion without finding any articles linking Allen to the crimes. This despite the fact that Zodiac was known to have taken "trophies" from his crimes.Undeterred, Graysmith proceeds to insinuate that Allen committed most of the unsolved murders in California during the last 30 years in addition to the five known Zodiac murders.Does the man have no shame?Ask yourself why Graysmith did not disclose the name of the Zodiac until after Leigh Allen's death.Well the question answers itself.Leigh Allen wasvery disturbed man by all accounts.Hell, he may be the Zodiac for all I know, but there is absolutely no evidence, other than pure circumstance, that would establish this.

At the risk of piling on here, this is also one of the most poorly written books of the last century.Any self-respecting high school english teacher would give this a C- for effort and the number of words used. How an editor let this get to press is the only mystery involved in the Zodiac unmasked.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too confusing
I read the original Zodiac book shortly after its release and loved it. I have been fascinated with the case ever sense. It was well written and keeps the reader interested from start to finish. However, the Zodiac Unmasked is different. The author jumps back and forth in time and repeats information so many times it is nearly impossible to correctly follow what is happening. Though the book has some interesting information not included or available for the original book, it is a chore working through the book to get it. I was very dissappointed with this book after enjoying the first and the movie so much. Unless you are a die hard slueth that cannot get enough of this case, I would avoid this one and stick to the first.

5-0 out of 5 stars If it's haunted you, then you must know....
If you've always been curious or even haunted by not knowing who the Zodiac killer of the late 60's and early 70's in the Bay Area was, then you have to read this book. No one else but Robert Graysmith has or could have compiled such a detailed account of who the prime suspect was and still is. His name is...you've got to read the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars What a load of fertilizer
To think this twisted mess actually made a lot of money (especially with that movie) is a *real* crime. At least the much better ZODIAC, made some attempt to be fair.Check the visual sightings reported in the first book that had a suspect in the 5'9" - 5'10" range, and about 185 to 190lbs. Graysmith's choice in late sixties was 6'0" and weighed around 240lbs. #
The author twists and bends alleged events to somehow "prove" Allen was at that place when the horrible crime occurred. Allen allegedly went to Riverside in the sixties for auto races, so this means he probably murdered Cheri Bates, etc. etc. #
Results of handwriting tests and lie detector tests that Allen passed are glibly explained by Allen's tremendous I.Q. (ala Prof. Moriarty?)or, devious drug taking. This slop came before the DNA test proved Allen's lack of guilt on the murders. We don't recall any child molesters that murdered co-ed types in their spare time. #
Two stars at best, but you can spend better time watching GRAYSMITH UNMASKED (6 parts) on YouTube.

2-0 out of 5 stars In desperate need of a competent editor
I would have loved this book had the writing and organization been as well-executed as the author's investigation.

Based on the content of the book, it would seem that the author is the most informed person alive regarding this case. There are multiple instances in the book of police departments buying bulk quantities of his 1986 book "Zodiac" in order to learn about the case as they worked on aspects of it.

And there was a lot of information scattered throughout this book. But unfortunately, 'scattered' describes both the quantity and its organization at the same times.

Long passages of quotation are often repeated.Observations are made repeatedly. There are numerous inexplicable non-sequitors within a given section. The order and delineation of chapters and their sub-sections seems as often as not to be totally arbitrary. Finally, the book features so many long quotations that at times it seems to be nearly all quotation - which alone isn't a bad thing, but the writing style deviates from standard formatting and attribution techniques, which often leaves you hunting around in an effort to remember just who is being quoted in a given passage.

I suppose all of that is to say that this book was in dire need of a competent editor.By the last quarter of the book I would regularly encounter passages of quoatation for the third time and be able to quote them myself from memory as I read them.Just very poor structure and editing.

I enjoyed the writer's style though - whenever I wasn't cursing his wandering mind.

I haven't read any other Zodiac books.I found the subject matter very interesting, but I would advise anyone looking seriously at this book to search around and see if there aren't any books published since 2002 that are more competently edited.

As for the subject matter, I walk away from the book with the distinct impression that the Vallejo PD had a very simple, solvable case within their grasp early on long before the Zodiac took to the media and for some reason just dropped the ball. The Darlene Ferrin case in particular appears (by the book's description) to be so very cut & dried that I'm left wondering just how they could not have solved it.Kinda left me thinking there's more to her story ... the book didn't dig into her apparent relationships with police officers very deeply.

2-0 out of 5 stars No Chemistry - Great Plot. Nothing to Roar About.
It's sad when the extra characters carry the story... In this FIRST book I can't grasp the 'chemistry' between Brody & Ava, Ava is a Gemini and the constant questions and doubt she has would drive me - a LEO completely insane! I kept reading this book because the additional characters is what kept the story going. I am a LEO and I need a strong mate, a gemini just doesn't cut it! UGH! The romance scenes in this story just did not match the plot nor the astrologic signs - to dull! I really hope the next book is better. For this to be a series, its off to a dull start! This is nothing to roar about!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great New Find

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great New Series
This is a great new series. I am looking forward to more books coming out soon. The material for this book is refreshingly new and well written. If you are a fan of Dark Hunter Novels you will like this new series!

5-0 out of 5 stars Warrior Ascended
Outstanding story. It took quite a few pages to set up the story but for the first novel in a series, it was well done.Very enjoyable, good reading. The author has a strong ability to turn a well penned phrase and best of all- keep the reader's interest.Looking forward the the next book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read, fantastic ending. I could not put this book down!
A hot, hunky hero and a timid museum curator who needs saving made for quite an exciting read on my last trip to New York. I blazed through this book in just two days and you will too. Addison writes a simply enthralling tale for the ages. Brody is the guy we all want protecting us and Ava is the girl we would all like to be. You'll be truly captivated by the characters and the back story she weaves throughout this magical battle between and good and evil. I just can't wait for the next book in the series to come out! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Second Book in the Series
After reading the first book in the series, I went and downloaded the second to my Nook in and effort to read a series through to the end before starting a new one. I was not disappointed with this plan in the least. It was almost as if it was an extension of the first book, flowing right into it.

As I expected, there was none of the slow intro that there is many times in the first book in a series. If you read the first book, you would already know about the paranormal world Jo lives in. This allows us as the reader to dive right into the story - and dive right in we do. The action picks up in the beginning giving us a depth in the Shadow Agents. In this book the action is there, the overhanging doom of the plague is there but it is flavored with an almost humanizing of the Shadow Agents.

Don't get me wrong, they are still as nasty as Taco Bell at two in the morning, but you get an idea of why they are that nasty. You almost feel sorry for them. That is until one of them opens up their mouth and says something. Which is the feeling I get that the author is trying to show us - a bit of how Jo is seeing things.

She is part Shadow and part Light. Her mother, the previous Archer for the Light had her while infiltrating the Shadow side with the Tulpa, Leader of the Shadows and a being created fully from thought and will. An evil agent on the Shadow side created him out of his imagination. And now this creature with near limitless power knows that Joanna Archer is his daughter.

The idea of the "cursed battlefield" that is the Second Sign that the Zodiac troops are looking for is presented in a couple of different ways. The reason this appealed to me is that it left it up to me to interpret which one was really happening - if there was indeed only a single cursed battlefield.

The one thing that I wanted to see more of in the first book I felt like I was given. More of a style of Krav Maga from Jo. Without spoiling too much, there is at least one major fight scene where I feel she was displaying more of the brutality of the fighting style working in conjunction with her superhuman powers. More inline with the initial fight she had with Ajax and the Shadow that killed her sister.

With more of a depth of feeling and caring for the characters, more of a Krav Maga feel to her fighting and everything from the first book that I loved, I am moving this one up a bit higher in the grading system. At least an A- and well worth the money and definitely worth the time to read. Book 3 is already sitting in my Nook waiting for me to open it.

3-0 out of 5 stars dissappointed
The first book caught my interest and I loved it's originality. In this book, the heroine was whiny and lackluster. She lacked direction and never seemed to get on track.I kept thinking, "Get smart!", but it never happened.I'm afraid that this felt like a slice of life and didn't seem to have a purposeful place to go and logic seemed to float away. So much potential, oh well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
This is a great series... wish it continued..instead of a 4 part series.. it was hard to put down.. went from book to book almost non stop...defentaly a "I will just read a few more pages and two hours later you realize its 3am"

Another wonderful book by Vicki Pettersson. The more that I learn about Joanna Archer the more that I want to learn about her. This was an action packed story that grabs you by the collar and doesn't let go. I am definitely looking forward to more from this amazing storyteller.

4-0 out of 5 stars Science and Magic Come Together
Science and magic come together to decimate Las Vegas's population in the second volume of the Signs of the Zodiac series.

Joanna Archer is still living a double life as a superhero and a socialite heiress, going under her sister Olivia's name. But someone else knows her as Joanna: a Shadow initiate whose metamorphosis isn't far away. Regan DuPree seems both a helper and a hindrance, and Jo trusts her when she probably shouldn't. As a result, she unintentionally spreads the deadly virus that the Tupla let loose, and things worsen from there.

The Neon Boneyard is a brilliant setting as always, and Joaquin's underground lair is genuinely creepy. The melding of science and magic is a big part of what makes this series a winner, and the plague steps this up a notch. And it goes to show that orders by troop leaders are issued for a reason: because defying them will only worsen things for everyone, as Joanna learns. I wanted to slap her a few times, and it's rather annoying when she approaches her human lover as her true self. A high point of this series is that the real focus - as it should be - is on Jo coming to terms with her Light and Shadow sides. So bringing in Ben Traina is frustrating, and Jo's jealousy over his new girlfriend seems over-the-top.

There's clever plotting and foreshadowing - everything Jo learns early in the novel becomes important later. But there're plenty of unfinished plot threads that'll hopefully be picked up in latter instalments. Why didn't teenager Joanna abort her foetus instead of fulfilling the pregnancy and adopting out the child? When will Jo and her mother Zoe finally meet again, and what might happen? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
Can't get enough of this series.
Joanna has been through hell and back. This is truly an original series.
In a genre full of vampires and werewolves, Vicki Pettersson has created a gem!
A MUST READ!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Touch of Twilight
This is third book in the Signs of the Zodiac series.
By this point in the series things have gotten complicated for Joanna. Obstacles are coming at her from all sides, but it never gets confusing for the reader. The Tulpa, Regan, Ben, and now a doppelganger. Plus something that she did in the last book could have disastrous consequences for the future of the Light troop if she doesn't fix it.
I love the scenes at Master Comics, and these were my favourite from the last two books as well. Zane and Carl, who create the manuals, are great characters, and we learn a little bit more about what motivates one of them here.
Hunter is a great character as well, and things with him finally end up where its been threatening all this time.
Warren, too, remains an intriguing character, and Chandra is becoming more rounded, and I can't wait to pick up the next one to find out what happens next.

3-0 out of 5 stars Back to being lackluster
I adore the premise of this series. The whole Light vs Dark superheroes plot is refreshing and intriguing.I love the idea that the adventures are all chronicled in comic books and the vivid belief by children fuel them.Joanna/Olivia is an intresting character and her back story is also intriguing and original. So why is this series so lackluster for me?This book in particular really went back and forth, alternating between scenes of great action, humor, and intelligence.Moments where I rooted for the lead character and really felt for her heartbreaking decisions. But here Joanna/Olivia was often whiny and put her own personal needs above the good of the troop. That just doens't sound like a superheroine to me.The story also lacked a good flow...the story would be moving right along and I would be intrigued and then it would just plummet into vague descriptions and things that had nothing to do with the plot.At times I felt lost and would have to reread passages to find out what I missed.I don't like that in a book. That said, there were some steller moments in the novel and I loved watching some of Joanna/Olivia's mastermindings come to fruitation.I certainly love Petterrson's premise and characters enough to keep reading the series, but I hope the books can continue to improve in the storytelling and editing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for number 4

Joanna Archer has reluctantly accepted the roles destiny assigned her: Avenger, Savior ... Destroyer.

On the surface she's a sexy, sophisticated socialite, at home among the beautiful people of the Las Vegas upper crust. But Joanna Archer inhabits another world: a place ordinary humans cannot see . . . a dangerous dimension where an eternal battle rages between the agents of Light and Shadow. And Joanna is both.

Stalked by an enigmatic doppelganger from a preternatural realm, Joanna can feel the Light failing--which is propelling her toward a terrifying confrontation with the ultimate master of evil, the dark lord of Shadow: her father.

Vegas is all about winning big . . . or losing everything. To save her friends, her future, her worlds, Joanna Archer must gamble it all by fully embracing the darkness inside her.

As unpredictable and fast paced as the first two Signs of the Zodiac, The Touch of Twilight grabs hold of your collar and doesn't let go. Engrossing characters, suspense, good vs. evil and in the middle of everything is Joanna Archer. Sometimes situations get the best of her and all she can do is clean up her mess, learn from every situation. Stressed beyond belief, anxiety about the Changelings and seemingly on her own Joanna Archer decides she will do whatever she has to to protect everyone. After three wonderful stories Vicki Pettersson is definitely a must read for me. She combines intrigue, action, super powers, , good & evil. Which side will win in this colossal battle?T his action packed third book in the series is a wonderful addition. I am eagerly awaiting book 4 in this series, The City of Souls due out June 30, 2009.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love the Signs of the Zodiac series for its great originality and elaborate mythology
Courtesy of CK2S Kwips and Kritiques

Joanna Archer is a mystery, sometimes even to herself, ever since assuming the role of Kairos. Having come into her special Zodiac abilities and taking up the crossbow where her mother left off, Joanna now has the ever present responsibility of protecting the humans in Las Vegas from the greatest danger, the Shadow Zodiac, headed up by Joanna's own father, the Tulpa. She is unique, being equal part shadow and light and as such may very well be the only one who can stop the Tulpa. This is all known before we even start The Touch of Twilight.

In this third installment in the Signs of the Zodiac series, Joanna is facing her greatest challenge yet. The powers of the Light Zodiac seem to be failing and the Shadows growing stronger, as someone seems to be playing with the atmosphere itself. Then there is a doppelganger stalking Joanna's every move for reasons Joanna can't begin to imagine. On top of that, the third sign of the Zodiac is imminent - the rise of the Kairos's shadow side. As if that isn't already enough, Shadow Warrior Rose is still haunting Joanna, trying to take over Joanna's life as she used to know it and something is dangerously wrong with Joanna's protector Changeling. How will Joanna ever resolve all of these issues in time to save Vegas from mass destruction?

I love the Signs of the Zodiac series for its great originality and elaborate mythology as well as the complex characters. It is a breath of fresh air in a market swamped with urban fantasy stories that all sound the same after a while. Vicki Pettersson has put a great deal of effort into building the world of the Zodiac and developing the rules for her world. There is no doubt she has a penchant for this aspects when reading The Touch of Twilight. Details are painted so vividly I can see exactly what our characters are seeing. Readers get a great flavor of the city of Las Vegas through the books and even if someone has never been there, they can imagine it in all its excess and abundant glory. I went to Vegas for the first time this past year and you can bet I had my eyes open to the sights and sounds, seeing with my eyes what before I had only seen in words on the page. I kept imagining what the Zodiac troops would be doing if they were real.

I thought the whole doppelganger concept as it is used here is a stroke of genius! I loved trying to figure out what exactly that being was and why it was after Joanna. As I started to put two and two together, I became excited by the concept and how that twist would turn things upside down and inside out. It also gave me hope that one thing I've been dying for to happen since reading The Scent of Shadows may still occur. The addition of the science behind the Zodiac troops as it is beginning to be introduced is quite exciting as well. We are beginning to get an even deeper insight into the workings of the Zodiac troops and how exactly they came to be whom and what they are. All of these are fascinating concepts I hope are more deeply explored in future books.

For fans of those secondary characters, we are given a treat in The Touch of Twilight as well. Secrets are coming out into the open and some deeply mysterious people, and even those who seem to only exist on the surface are explored. I loved getting the history behind Zane the comic book store owner and the creator of the comic books that double as history manuals of Zodiac troops. I never in a million years would have imagined his story so that made it all the more compelling.

This installment was just as engrossing as previous books in the series. However, in spite of the above comments, A Touch of Twilight is just a touch... off.

So much is happening throughout the book that I found myself getting confused here and there. Between doppelgangers on a mission, a broken Changeling who's totally embracing the attitude of teenagers everywhere today while still being embroiled in the world of the Zodiac, and strange black holes and tears in the atmosphere I was feeling quite lost for a while. I had no idea where Pettersson and Joanna were going with the events unfolding. This had the added benefit though, of completely shocking me senseless when I finally figured out what was really happening. I was blown away!

I'm also now especially confused as to who knows who Joanna really is and who doesn't. When des she wear the mask and when doesn't she? There were several times throughout the novel I couldn't believe someone was so oblivious to the dual identities of Joanna/Olivia. I hope this gets cleared up in the next book because I just see the confusion growing on how in the world she can keep her secret identity.

I was beginning to despair of Joanna ever getting over her "what could have been" fantasies and moving on past her unhealthy obsession with former lover, Ben, and her conviction that she doesn't need her Zodiac Troop. Finally we get a glimpse of what Joanna could be like when she finally fully embraces her new nature and we see great leaps in her maturity growth. The conclusion of The Touch of Twilight shows this beautifully.

Every series has it dips in the road, which I'm seeing The Touch of Twilight as. I think the overarching story and the underlying mythology of The Signs of the Zodiac series is going to bounce back in the next book and in spite of all my confusion over some parts of this book, I am still eagerly awaiting the next book in the series and hope we don't have to wait too long!

Aren't Cancerians fed up with being the mothers of the universe? Don't Leos become weary of being told they're just fun-loving party animals? Does a girl--or boy--ever get to flash their mean streak? Do they ever--in Darkside Zodiac, the book that exposes the hidden underside of the stars, and how they affect the dark side of everyone.

The zodiac definitely has a dark side that influences the nasty in every one under every sign:

When Scorpios shed their Ms. Manners persona out pops a sex-mad control freak.

Capricorns are really bean-counting misanthropes.

Aries are head banging psychos.

Aquarians can't wait to be beamed back to the mothership.

Darkside Zodiac covers personalities, rising sign, ruling planet, Moon, qualities, and elements. It also details lifestyle choices (jobs, vacations, fashion, interior design, partners) all from a gripping, yet rarely discussed perspective. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining
Quite funny and entertaining slightly dark humor (if your sign is one that can handle it).It is a bit cynical, brutally honest, and not for those easily offended. There are cute scenarios to lighten the air as well.I do agree that the color schemes could be different. It is sometimes hard to read dark purple print on a black background...etc, even with perfect vision. Not to mention that nearly every page has a new color on it... just blindingly ugly!

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful Read
I saw this book at a retail store and was able to buy this book on Amazon for 1/4 of the price - what a deal!A good read: insightful, colorful and relevant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nailed it!!
SO INCREDIBLY FUNNY but beyond that, the biting remarks hit close to home, even for the skeptics who I've shown it to. They may deny parts of it, but you see that spark of recognition in their eye.
The book uses many metaphors leo=king aquarius=alien, etc. and oftentimes, they're so specific that only you will get your own descriptions XD, ie aqua-mars in cap: "in space no one can hear [your prisoners] scream, which is how you like it"

4-0 out of 5 stars AS BLUNT AS IT CAN GET & ACCURATE TOO!
So many years ago my ex girlfriend left this book in my room and I just threw it in a box and stored it in the attic, so about a week ago I was cleaning out my attic and found this book and I finally realized why she loved it. It's as accurate and precise as it can be. What I love about it is that it doesnt sugar coat any personality trait - whether it be a good one or a bad one. The only annoying part is that you have to search for when the moons and planets align at the time of your birth according to the exact day & year, although it can be fun to figure out - it is MAJOR confusion. But once you get passed that its fun to do and read along with your piers or partners. So I would have given it 5 stars if it wasnt so confusing in last couple pages. I swear that chart is retarded. Anywho, buy the book. Its pretty cool =O

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, Not Great
I bought this book strictly for a good laugh (obviously) and I wasn't disappointed. It was definitely funny; there was something negative to appreciate about every sign.

The book also covers Chinese astrology. It's small, thick, has lots

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm SO into astrology.
This little book is my bible. I love it. I had it for YEARS before I damaged it by reading too often so I got a new one after many years. Good stuff...breaks down each and every sign with their good AND bad traits. Also has info on Chinese astrology. VERY handy!

3-0 out of 5 stars Scent of Shadows
Joanna Archer is the daughter of a Light Zodiac Warrior (Zoe, aka the Archer) and Tulpa (leader of the Shadow Zodiac Warriors). She is what they call the Kairos and all the fates hinge on her. She is made up of both sides and can choose her destiny. Warren (a Light Zodiac Warrior) is her guide during her metamorphosis. Ajax is Shadow Zodiac Warrior sent to kill her during her metamorphosis.

This book is more fantasy than what I normally read. That does not mean I didn't enjoy it. It just means that it helped A LOT to write things down. I compare this book to The Matrix. You have Joanna (Neo), Warren (Morphius) and Ajax (Agent Smith). You also have the traitor among the good guys, who I won't reveal and ruin the entire book for you. Once I put it in this context the book smoothed out a bit. It is the basic good versus evil.

If you can get through the beginning chapters you will find a good story that Pettersson created. Joanna is a very strong character. She likes to kick ass and ask questions later and yet you see her soft side with her love for her sister Olivia and childhood sweetheart Ben. Warren is the fatherly figure that guides Joanna through this journey and will go to the ends of the earth because he believes she is the one. Ajax is the typical bad guy that just keeps coming back again and again until you just can't stand it. Plus there are a lot of other characters that are introduced that have potential. I am looking forward to reading the next book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid opening, needs more Krav Maga
This is a series that has been on my radar for a while, but I finally forced up towards the top of my "To Be Read" pile (more like mountain) once I came back from Romantic Times. The idea of superheroes and supervillains duking it out in Vegas in a zodiac inspired Heroes-like mashup grabbed my interest a bit. It spoke not only to the urban fantasy reader in me, but the comic book reader as well. Of course that places me firmly in the camp of the "shifty eyed adults," but I get ahead of myself.

The first of a series (book five released just recently), is what I would expect from a first book. A few chapters of getting used to the characters and introducing the world and setting they will be playing in. For me, that is the hardest part of a book. At the same time, by the point I was sitting around page 60 or so, I was seeing an evolution to the character that was drawing me into her story.

As we follow Joanna Archer in her adventures I am drawn more and more in by her duality - a damn near self-destructive personality that fights at odds with the good natured person she wants to be. In short, she is broken. Much like the characters I love in Mark Henry's books or on the show True Blood, Joanna is broken in some of the most interesting ways.

What I would like to see more of is the description of Krav Maga and how it pertains to Joanna. Krav Maga is a brutal, unforgiving martial art, but as The Archer it seems that the conduit that she inherits from her mother is at odds with her fighting style. In some ways it shows the duality of the character, but I would honestly like to see a bit more bone-popping from her.

Overall, it was a solid read and a good opening book for the series. It took me all of 30 minutes to download the second book in the series to my Nook. Book 4 and 5 are still sitting on my too be read mountain. For a beginning novel in a series I will give it a B+ for sure. Well worth the investment and also available in audiobook form.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Scent of SoSo
This first book in the series of the Sign of the Zodiac is mediocre at best. While this is a fantasy story set in Las Vegas, with unbelievable events, reactions to the events and "superhero's" spawned in the story by the traumatic event in her teenage years by the primary character not to mention the pain and loss from her mother's desertion soon after the event and her father's disavowal of her lineage it is still hard to fathom, believe and did not transport me to an alternate reality. It was only by sure stubbornness and a couple of rare good hooks, that I completed the book.

PRO's:Strong lead female character.Good insight into the sister bond between Joanna and Olivia and what Joanna finally realized and understood about her sister growing as a person.Interesting twist on how the Light and Shadows detect and find each other and how it represents the opposing forces (albeit stereotypical in nature).

CON's:Too many events, outcomes and character reactions aren't believable even in a fantasy setting. Many common themes run through this story but a solid link connecting them is not available.Would have liked more detail around how these beings came to be, their skills, etc. What exactly is the Tulpa other than a being created by energy? Mixing of metaphors with no clear link explaining how they are connected.

Overall:Agree with another reviewer although it is not a great literary read, good for the beach or light reading. Not the worst thing I have every read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Believable Superheros
I chose this book mostly because the Kindle version was free and I was searching for a new urban fantasy series. Not having high expectations, I timidly began to read. And read. And read until I was finished, because I didn't want to put the book down! The plot of this series is pretty awesome, because it isn't your typical urban fantasy about werewolves, vampires, or faeries. This series is about flawed superheros who are believable and likable because they aren't perfect. These superheros can't see through walls with x-ray vision, or spin spider webs, or shot laser beams from their eyes.Instead, they are sort of like the mutants from X-men, possessing super strength, speed, and endurance in their genes that lays relatively dormant until their twenty-fifth birthday.Oh, and there are super villains, too, and love, and action, and intrigue.Overall, a pretty good book that kept me interested enough to buy the remainder of the series. If I liked it so much, why didn't I give it five stars?Because I think that there was something off - the plot was a little predictable and the characters weren't fleshed out (although there is good character development throughout the series).

5-0 out of 5 stars So good, I bought the rest of the series...
I will admit that when I first got this book (Kindle edition) I was skeptical. I mean, at the time, it was free. Not too many free kindle books are good, but I have to admit, this one is.
You ever went to Fresh & Easy, where they have samples? Ever tasted a sample that was so delicious that you had to buy it?
That's exactly what it was like for me, I got one hell of a taste from this book & I hungered for more. So I did my research & found that there are 4 other books, the last will be released in July 2010 I think (correct me if I'm wrong). I will give the author where credit is due because she is just as talented as my other favorite author, Charlaine Harris.
The reason I switched up for a new series in the Supernatural books was because I can't wait for the next book of the Southern Vampire Mysteries. I just got her most recent, Dead In The Family, & I refuse to finish it because who knows how long it will be until her next book. But thank goodness for my stubbornness because I found a new set of series to fall in love with.
I know that the character goes to dark places at times because of how much tragedy she endured over her short life, but that what makes it awesome!! I literally stay up to 5 maybe 6 in the morning reading. That's how I know this series is worth it, I can't put it down!!
Don't mean to bash on the Twilight series but honestly, that was a bore. I only got all 4 books because EVERYONE claimed it was amazingly awesome. I found out for myself that it was amazingly awesome to preteens & the young adults. (No offense) I love action, sex, and cursing, & this is what you get from Vicki Patterson (sp).
So...if you're a Sookie Stackhouse fan, try reading this book. You might get hooked the way that I did. Warning, content not intended for the young & innocent!! (just kidding...not) But it gets quite graphic & gruesome at times. I LOVE IT!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best yet in series
Highly entertaining yet introspective; sprinkled with enough action to keep it interesting. Loved the ending, woke the neighbors with my cheering! Score a huge A+ for Ms Pettersson!

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a good book; really good series
I won't be overly verbose or give anything away. This is a good book, easy to read, interesting and clever. When the 4th book ended, I thought it would lose some of it's edge but it did not.The introduction of new characters and connection to the existing characters kept it right on track.Start the series from the beginning and read them all.I look forward to the next book in the series.

3-0 out of 5 stars Middle Book Syndrome
I really love this series as a whole, and have no regrets about buying this book to add to my collection, as it's a necessary chapter in the continuing story. Pettersson's distinctive style is consistent, we get some important revelations about Zoe the missing mother (which promptly makes me furious at Warren), a scene between Olivia and Jo, and a lot more information about what it's like to be a Shadow agent. The return of Harlen Tripp was beautiful, fun, and overall entertaining.

So why only 3 stars? Largely because this book suffers "middle book" syndrome, where the plot really doesn't seem to go much of anywhere. There's personal growth, but as far as any plot goals -- Bring down the Tulpa, Bring down Warren, save Hunter from himself, understand the rules of Midheaven -- there's no success or even much forward progress. It was ultimately exercise in frustration that left me wanting the next book just so that some goal could be completed.

With a lack of coherent plot, aside from not really going anywhere, the action seems largely random. I get the feeling it's all set up for later books, but an entire book of set up just isn't as fun. Especially when the books devote so much time to a retread of past books.

So, it's a decent book, and I aim to keep reading the series, but don't expect to be blown away.

5-0 out of 5 stars book
love being able to get my books thru amazon...they are always in excellent condition and the prices are very reasonable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complex, intense and revealing
In this book the main characters are not taken care of, not babied and no Disney ending is around the corner. Having said that, Joanna discoveries a whole new, powerful way to take care of herself and those around her.Instead of having to rely on the Light for her backup and decisions, she has given herself a voice and permission to become who she is meant to be and to trust unlikely sources in the process. I always figured Joanna having more powers would be her destiny, Inever considered that having less would actually be the key to her survival.

Joanna struggles intensely in this book and when her heart breaks for Hunter, the Light and her mother she seems to fight and lose the battle, which makes this book so uniquely powerfulto me;Joanna loses, she has huge moments of weak almost broken will....amazing, she is human! In her emotional breaks, she loses part of her sarcastic, guarded youth and matures into the hero that she has been so afraid of becoming.

Finding out the truths behind Warren, Zoe, Hunter and the Tulpa took this book to another level. Of course I have always wondered what the back story with these characters was and now some of the mysteries are becoming more clear. Mind you, this series remains as shrouded and mysterious as ever but there are some people who are now much more defined. Joanna herself transitioned beautifully in this book. Her relationships with Cher and Suzanne were touching and real. She is finally embracing parts of Olivia that were her strengths and accepting both the loss and the gain of taking over her sister's life.
This book is complex and intense. It is my favorite in the series so far, which is amazing as so often it seems series lose their way around book 4 or 5. Nice work on this one! I love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars GRRReat tale about courage and friendship!!!
Our students have fond memories of Author Oliver Chin's visit and his reading of "Year of the Tiger."They loved his story about the unusual, unbreakable friendship between a girl and tiger and how children can sometimes teach better life lessons than their elders.

As mentioned in earlier reviews, this engaging story is paired perfectly with lively, colorful illustrations. It's fun to search for all the other animals from the Chinese zodiac as well.

Oliver Chin has produced another wonderful story to his Tales from the Chinese Zodiac series and we look forward to more! His books will captivate many young readers.

Be sure to check out another one of our school's favorites by this author, "Julie Blackbelt:The Kung Fu Chronicles."

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect gift for new moms!
I am a big fan of Oliver Chin's Tales of the Zodiac series. The Year of the Tiger is the fifth in the series.I love these books-- they are the perfect gifts for new moms and I have bought them all.I feel the books are a more personal gift that celebrates the year of birth of the baby interweaved with an easy introduction to the Chinese Zodiac. This is an entertaining story of Tiger and the little girl Su.The story-telling, along with the rich illustrations truly flow together to give us a cute and fun hint of what someone's personality might be like born in the Year of the Tiger!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Our School Lunar New Year Celebration!!
Year of the Tiger was a great book to read to my students prior to our school Lunar New Year celebration. The illustrations are very appealing, kid friendly and seem to jump right off the page. The explanation of the Chinese Zodiac animals on the opening page helps to set the playful and informative tone of the story.Oliver Chin effortlessly weaves the animals of the Chinese Zodiac throughout and creates lovable characters and situations that the students can identify with. The book led to a wonderful discussion on how it is easy to make assumptions and form incorrect opinions about people you don't know..,just as both Su and Teddy's family did. The students pointed out that in the end, it was the kids who made the grownups see the error of their ways!

My students simply could not get enough, and have since come to my library to re-read The Year of the Tiger, and to "seek and find" each Chinese Zodiac Animal tucked away within the pages.I would highly recommend this book as well as Oliver Chin's Tales from the Chinese Zodiac books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title
Although this is a good story, well-written and interesting, it is NOT really a story about Chinese New Year. It should probably be catogorized as a story about environmental protection. I bought this book to read in my 2nd grade son's class on Chinese New Year. It disappointed me in the sense that it has practically nothing to do with Chinese New Year.

4-0 out of 5 stars I really liked that this story had a lot of passion and intensity.
Warrior Avenged by Addison Fox
Paranormal Romance- Sep 7th, 2010
3 1/2 stars

Adrasteia was once a nymph, but after she was killed by Zeus, Hades resurrected her as the goddess Nemesis. Now in the service of Hades, Nemesis is the goddess of divine retribution, killing the wicked and collecting their souls. When she met Kane Montague, (an immortal warrior bound to the service of Thesis) they had a brief affair and Nemesis betrayed Kane. But despite his anger and bitterness, Kane was unable to forget Nemesis. When he meets her again six months after their affair he still burns for her.But can he forgive Nemesis? And what will she do to be together with Kane again?

The first few pages of this story can get quite confusing as the author tantalizes you with bits and pieces of information instead of giving huge chunks. But overall I found this an exciting read. The chemistry between Kane and Nemesis is explosive to say the least. You can feel the attraction between them and their resistance to each other. Kane is a bitter man full of anger, and I can't help but feel that Nemesis does not deserve his fury. Nemesis made a pact with a sorcerer who mislead her, and you can't help but feel sorry for her and all the bad choices she made.

I really liked that this story had a lot of passion and intensity. But since this is the 2nd book in the Sons of the Zodiac series I did find it a bit difficult to orient myself and would highly suggest reading her 1st book, Warrior Ascended before this one. This book is heavy on Greek mythology and if you are a fan of it, you should definitely give this book a try.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kane
I have to admit I did not read the first book in this series as I won this book from another site.I did not find myself lost due to the fact either.I rather enjoyed reading about Kane and being poisoned to see what he is going to do next. This story has something for everyone.I look forward to reading more.

5-0 out of 5 stars True to the Plot, Amazing Story, A Must Read
This follows directly after the first story in this series. It was wondefully written and leaves a glimpse into furture stories just like the first one did. It makes you itching for the next one.
It is the story of Kane and his quest to gigure out exactly why Ilsa drugged him, and what she did during that time. It is also his struggle with the poison he suffers from. It is incredible, as you feel what the characters are going thru or went thru. If you are a fan of Dark Hunters then you have an idea of what this series is like with the Greek Gods and their warriors.

5-0 out of 5 stars superb urban romantic fantasy
Nemesis started her life as a cursed nymph, but recently became a Goddess. However, in spite of her change in position, the neo deity seeks revenge against the God who cursed her unfairly:, Zeus and his pantheon on Mount Olympus.Part of her effort was a Faustian deal with a dark sorcerer, but that has backfired on her since she finally met her first target Kane, Scorpio of the Zodiac warriors.

Her deal, made three centuries ago, is to kill Kane by poisoning his soul. For three hundred years he annually fights the war of survival and every time he has vanquished the toxin even knowing he will repeat the process again and again for eternity or his death. However, this year Kane Montague, an MI6 sniper-assassin, is divided ever since he met a woman Ilsa the secret agent who has him focused on her and not his mission or his survivability.

The latest superb Zodiac Warriors urban romantic fantasy (see Warrior Ascended) is a terrific tale of love, betrayal, and (readers will hope) redemption and not more perfidy as Aquarius and Scorpio do not mix smoothly.Fox world is fully developed with the back-story of what happened millennia go intertwined within the exciting storyline. The support cast especially his concerned brothers in arms enhance understanding of the lead couple as the second saga in the Fifth Age of Man is another winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Pay it Forward Lesson For Kids
Zella, Zack and Zodiac by renound author Bill Peet tells a "tail" of an odd partnership between bird and fowl with a great "kicker" in the end. I could not help the puns here. This is a beautiful example of pay it forward where kids can learn though the eyes of animals. The dialogue between the zebra and the baby ostrich is fabulous and told in Peet's characteristic rhyming stanza's. Since I have horses and admire birds, I can't help but love this book!

Product Description

The Dendera zodiac--an ancient bas-relief temple ceiling adorned with mysterious symbols of the stars and planets--was first discovered by the French during Napoleon's campaign in Egypt, and quickly provoked a controversy between scientists and theologians. Brought to Paris in 1821 and ultimately installed in the Louvre, where it can still be seen today, the zodiac appeared to depict the nighttime sky from a time predating the Biblical creation, and therefore cast doubt on religious truth. The Zodiac of Paris tells the story of this incredible archeological find and its unlikely role in the fierce disputes over science and faith in Napoleonic and Restoration France.

The book unfolds against the turbulence of the French Revolution, Napoleon's breathtaking rise and fall, and the restoration of the Bourbons to the throne. Drawing on newspapers, journals, diaries, pamphlets, and other documentary evidence, Jed Buchwald and Diane Greco Josefowicz show how scientists and intellectuals seized upon the zodiac to discredit Christianity, and how this drew furious responses from conservatives and sparked debates about the merits of scientific calculation as a source of knowledge about the past. The ideological battles would rage until the thoroughly antireligious Jean-François Champollion unlocked the secrets of Egyptian hieroglyphs--and of the zodiac itself. Champollion would prove the religious reactionaries right, but for all the wrong reasons.

The Zodiac of Paris brings Napoleonic and Restoration France vividly to life, revealing the lengths to which scientists, intellectuals, theologians, and conservatives went to use the ancient past for modern purposes.

Who was Jesus Christ? Did he exist?

For millennia the world has been driven by the differences between the great patriarchal religions. Western civilization--or Christendom, as it was once called--received its values and its confidence from a belief in God, the Father, and Jesus, his only son. But what if this conviction were founded on an error?

Who is the man in the factually inconsistent Gospel stories? And who is the man who makes a brief appearance carrying a jar of water? This extraordinary study by aUnitarian minister suggests that Jesus never existed historically; he was simply a representation of an astrological theology--a representation, simply put, of the zodiac sign of Aquarius. In The Gospel and the Zodiac, Reverend Bill Darlison demonstrates that all the other signs are present too, in perfect zodiacal order. The Gospel story is not the product of historians or eyewitnesses, but an older, mystical text produced by an ancient, esoteric school as a guide to the Age of Pisces.

Every bit as revelatory and controversial as it sounds, The Gospel and the Zodiac will shake up the religious status quo, and in doing so, provide both a new look at a religious icon and a deeper understanding of the faith that binds millions together. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars But Have You Seen The Video?!
View @ You Tube the video titled:"Sun of God?" youtube(dot)com/watch?v=QQ-kvw1fYXs

I have not yet read this book, but I have it on Inter-Library Loan request at the local public library. The video linked above I've known about for awhile now. It comprises what this book says the Unitarian Minister has discerned from the scripture. It's fascinating and concise I think, so as to acquire a immediate understanding of what this book purports to say about what has intrigued scholars and lay persons like myself, alike.

I'll expand on my comment once the book arrives. Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy the video.

U.

4-0 out of 5 stars Between a Gnostic and a hard place
This book seems destined to be another casualty in the war of false dichotomies between those who say that a lesson without literal history has nothing to offer and those who say that a story with history has no deeper insights to offer. This is a tragedy as I feel that this book is neither in the vein of Christian Orthodoxy, nor is it part of the neo-Gnostic movement that seems to be something of a fad lately. This book is neither and readers on either side of the debate who insist that this book is just another version of Zeitgeist or the Da Vinci code's philosophy are really missing out on a lot that the author is offering here.

To get to the point, this book is about the Jesus. Note that I did not Christianity, or the church, or any conspiracy theories. This book is an honest effort to get back at the heart of the early Christian faith, which, since its inception was a creed of social action and active participation in the divine. The solar calendar was used as a narrative vehicle to give life to the parables and teachings of an obscure rabbi in Roman Palestine whose followers honestly believed that they possessed the truth that will set you free. This why the church calendars of the Coptics in Egypt and Ethiopia still use the one year martyr's calendar as opposed to the three year Roman Missal. The adoptionist wing of early Christianity knew that martyrdom, in both literal and metaphorical senses- the achieving of one's own Christhood (being made brothers as St. Paul said) was the faith's true goal.

This is the heart of Christianity and the Gospel message: To take up one's own cross. This is what St. Francis did, it is what St. Teresa of Avila did, and it is what mother Theresa did in India. True Christianity has always been about BEING Christ as much as it is about believing in what others wrote about him- if not more so. The stories are the vehicle whose belief should motivate our progress towards grace. To the extent that zodiacal syncretism was and potentially still is helpful in transmitting that grace and self development, I feel that we all - Orthodox and Gnostics alike - have much to gain from Re-learning the gospels.

I should also add that i feel this is why Eastern religions are so much more appealing to scientifically minded westerners, because religion in much of Asia operates the same way that Jesus described the Sabbath - it is there to serve man and not the other way around. Those Asians who take the Buddhist and Taoist lore literally may do so without being considered ignorant or simple, while those of a more philosophical nature can freely apply subjective reason, psychological insight, and mythic interpretation to their inherited traditions without being labeled heretics.

Anyways, a good book that I fear will continue to have a hard time finding a truly receptive audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truth
It is refreshing to hear from a voice who understands the times of the period. The modern person does not understand mythology and esoteric spirtiuality. Bill Darlison does as did Joseph Campbell. Read this book with an open mind and agree or disagree accordingly. No rational person thinks that the Bible is to be read as literal history. It is much deeper than that.

4-0 out of 5 stars Holy Matrimony The Gospel & The Stars
This book links the Gospel and the constellations in a very cohesive manor. Bill Darlison covers topics such as Jesus' journey through Tyre and John the Baptist & Jesus' relationship to the constellations. He also gives you a break down of the spiritual aspects of every constellation.

I find Darlison's break down of biblical allegory and his out takes on the decans of the various constellations enlightening.

1-0 out of 5 stars Here we go again, or another "truth" about Jesus
This book ressurects the very old theory (or, should I say, the very old canard) of Jesus being merely a solar representation, his apostles the signs of the Zodiac, etc., etc. Well, as Lord Wellington once said, if you believe this, you will believe anything. Not a big surprise, all this coming from a "minister" of the Anything Goes "church". ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Written poorly , very immature, and way to opinonated Definitely DON;T BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU ARE A MICHAEL JACKSON FAN
This is definitely a book written on the perspective for young women , like the twins who just love to put their own twist on evaluating zodiac signs.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GET THEIR OWN PERSONAL OPINION AND THE OPINION OF THEIR OBVIOUS UNDERAGED FRIENDS THEN you will truly enjoy this book.

It seemed like they were under the pressure to write a rather large book and just rambled on about what they thought would be an overall fit for the zodiac sign.

Overall it contradicts way to much, with the useless added info (again very personal opinions implying certain signs have fetiches , keep in touch with their ex girl friends, etc., It was definitely not what I had expected.

And you should read it with not to many expectations, nor should you take to great of a value . Overall I felt out of 12 pages dedicated to one sign, 2 was fitting the others far fetched.

MOST OF ALL I FOUND IT DISTURBING AND VERY IMATURE FOR THE TWINS TO for example not respect a HUGE MUSICAL LEDGEND LIKE MICHAEL JACKSON, YET THROWING THEIR OPINION IN THERE OF THAT LISA MARIE PRESLEY WAS NUTS FOR MARRYING HIM

I therefor will give the book a one star, as it seemed the twins copied and pasted the only valuable info from other zodiac books and then offered their imature own opinion

Very disappointed . Go to [...]

5-0 out of 5 stars Love these girls!
I'm an avid fan of reading their daily/weekend/monthly horoscopes on [...], so I figured it'd be a good idea to invest in a Love Guide book. Their writing is eloquent, their depictions are true, and you can't go wrong with their advice. Ophira and Tali are the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars zodiac signs
This book reveals the true personality of most men according to their zodiac sign.I was curious to know how the book described me as a man and bingo!...most of the revelations about me are true. This book has helped me become aware of my shortcomings in order to seek ways to improve my behavior when it comes to relationships.

5-0 out of 5 stars very fresh perspective on the astrology of men...
i really like this book! there's a ton of information about the astrology of men. what i liked that they said is that "you can have a great realationship with a man of any zodiac sign - the key is to learn what makes him tick". and this book does just that! each sign has information such as how to spot him, what he wants in a woman, turn-ons & turn-offs, your first date and love matcher. nothing is fatalistic and "this could never work" but they do go beyond surface level descriptions that anyone knows. i read just one sign and decided to get the book but ultimately i think i'll go back and read about all the signs. i think this is a good tool as you're getting to know someone. you just can't deny some of the truths about our zodiac signs.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Astro Twins guide will bring greater joy to your boy(friend) and hubbies
Tali and Ophi did it!! Finally a guide to the guys of the galaxy has hit the sexy stratasphere. I found their book to be the smart savvy and sexy girls guide to their guys. An astrological template to help you not only figure out your guy but have fun with him as well. Being a professional coach and speaker, I'm VERY particular which relationship type books I read. Well this astrological guide is now one I recommend to all my relationship coaching clients, and they thank me. When I started recommending it, they all said, "Finally, a guy guide to the galaxy, I don't need to know anymore about my astrological sign, I want to know about his!!

Where most relationship meets astrological books can be formulaic and suffer with terminal earnestness, Tali and Ophi, provide smart savvy information that is funny, a bit edgy and exceedingly conversational. Knowing the astrological imprint of your man is vital in building healthy and fabulous relationships, in addition to manifesting a partner. My cuddly complex cutie, Charlie, wouldn't put it down, he kept saying, "Oh my God, that's me." And you know how stubborn those Aries can be, all that from a former non-believer. I was shocked. Brava!!! ... Read more
