Product Description
A detailed account of the biology and ecology of vascular wetland plants and their applications in wetland plant science, Wetland Plants: Biology and Ecology presents a synthesis of wetland plant studies and reviews from biology, physiology, evolution, genetics, community and population ecology, environmental science, and engineering. It provides a thorough discussion of the range of wetland plants adaptations to conditions such as life in water or saturated soils, high salt or high sulfur, as well as low light and low carbon dioxide levels. The authors include the latest research on the development of plant communities in newly restored or created wetlands and on the use of wetland plants as indicators of ecological integrity and of wetland boundaries. Over 140 figures, including over 70 original photographs, allow you to visualize the concepts, 40 tables give you easy access to definitions and data, and international examples provide you with a broad base of information. The growing consensus in wetlands literature and research suggests that methods are needed to assess the ecological health or integrity of wetlands, to set goals for wetland restoration, and to track the status and trends of wetlands. Wetland plants are emerging as important indicators, and becoming an important part of this research. Wetland Plants: Biology and Ecology contains up-to-date information on this increasingly important area in wetlands technology. ... Read more

Product Description
Covering wetlands soils from Florida to Alaska, Wetland Soils: Genesis, Hydrology, Landscapes, and Classification provides information on all types of hydric soils. With contributions from soil scientists who have extensive field experience, the book focuses on the soil morphology of the wet soils that cover most wetlands from the subtropics northward. No previous book has been devoted solely to the subject of hydric soils and their landscapes. The book is well organized and divided into three parts. Part I examines the basic concepts, processes, and properties of aspects of hydric soils that pertain to virtually any hydric soil. It provides a general overview and important terms and concepts. Part II covers the soils in specific kinds of wetlands and the different functions they perform. Part III emphasizes special wetlands conditions such as soils composed of sand, organic soils in northern North America, prairie wetlands, wetlands in saline situations, dry climates, and wetlands with modified hydrology.Whether you are an expert in soil science, or just need a crash course, this reference prepares you to work with real wetlands-outdoors. Written for scientists without a background in soil science and comprehensive in scope, Wetlands Soils: Genesis, Hydrology, Landscapes, and Classification provides basic and advanced coverage, explaining the fundamentals of hydric soils in terms even a non-soil scientist can understand. ... Product Description
How people perceive wetlands has always played a crucial role in determining how people act toward them. In this readable and objective account, Hugh Prince examines literary evidence as well as government and scientific documents to uncover the history of changing attitudes toward wetlands in the American Midwest.

As attitudes changed, so did scientific research agendas, government policies, and farmers' strategies for managing their land. Originally viewed as bountiful sources of wildlife by indigenous peoples, wet areas called "wet prairies," "swamps," or "bogs" in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were considered productive only when drained for agricultural use. Beginning in the 1950s, many came to see these renamed "wetlands" as valuable for wildlife and soil conservation.

Prince's book will appeal to a wide readership, ranging from geographers and environmental historians to the many government and private agencies and individuals concerned with wetland research, management, and preservation. ... Read more

Product Description
For over a decade, photographer Rosalie Winard has traveled the country by foot, canoe, airboat, and ATV, taking pictures of large birds of the wetlands from Florida to California, Louisiana to North Dakota. Her intimate portraits--tethered to an ethereal palette of white, gray, and black--are alight with Winard's passion for the avian world and its endangered terrain. Alternately meditative and exhilerating, abstract and literal, they capture the birds' remarkable habits and prehistoric forms, as well as their ineffable elegance and humor.

Wild Birds of the American Wetlands is a monumental and breathtaking study of some of the country's most beautiful birds--Great Blue Heron, White Ibis, Snoey Egret, Whooping Crane, Roseate Spoonbill, American White Pelican Wood Stork, and many more--and of their vanishing habitats. From the Ballona Wetlands in California to the prairies of Nebraska, Winard uses her thirty years of experience observing these winged creatures along with her mastery of photography to illuminate the importance of avian and wetland conservation.

Windard's camera lens has replaced her binoculars as she searches for images that depict the birds' elusive aspects and paradoxes: their simultaneous fragility and power, tranquility and action, stillness and momentum. At once a documentary photogrpaher, artist, and student of natural history, Winard, in each of her photographs, slips soundlessly into a vivid and detaled realism. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Majestic and extraordinary, this is a truly original mix of art and nature
Rosalie Winard has created a body of work of incomparable beauty and the reproductions of her photography are mesmerizing. Growing up around San Francisco Bay and its many wetlands I have always been fascinated by egrets, herons and pelicans, but I could never have imagined them the way Rosalie sees these flying souls. I am truly amazed at what she has done here. This book ought to cost $100.00 with its French folded dust wraps, cloth binding and numerous gate folded images. I've met Ms. Winard and she is just as beautiful as her photography. She absolutely and resolutely adores her subject matter. If I could indicate 8 stars then I would. Wild Birds of the American Wetlands is a magnificent masterpiece and Rosalie's work belongs in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art, period

5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual
Ethereal and spiritual is how I would describe these photographs. A very unique approach. The photographer's love of our feathered friends is evident in every photo. She describes how she came to love birds and observing them in her own words, as well. A real treat for birders and photographers.

5-0 out of 5 stars birds
I met Rosalie Winard and fell in love with her work prior to the publication of this book. I love that her work bridges science and art. She captures wetlands and the migratory journeys of birds through her photographs-provokes awe and concern for the well being of the creatures and their journeys. Her photographs also capture beauty, emotion, vastness, and joy in manner few artists ever achieve. I am so glad that Rosalie's book is on the shelves and fervently hope that this is the first of many books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Children's Future
I gave this book to my daughter for her 21st birthday, hoping that she would appreciate these birds and their space on our earth. Her reaction far exceeded my expectations. "Mom I never expected to like a book about birds but I love this book" .She wanted a photograph ( the pelican landing) for her next birthday present. Each photograph is a special insight, a haiku of bird poetry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wild Birds! Wild Photos!
I'm not a birder, but now I can understand why others are. The photos here are not the typical ones that always seem to be anatomy lessons. These capture the spirit of living in the wild along with the personality inherent in each individual avian. Highly recommended for those who love unique, fine art photography. The black and white is so evocative that somehow color seems superfluous. This is a beautifully produced book, a wonder at this price. ... Read more

Product Description
In this time of concern over wetlands, many groups have compelling reasons to identify and delineate wetlands. Financial institutions use environmental evaluation as a part of their loan decisions. Civil engineers must plan sites without disturbing existing wetlands. Conservation groups wish to identify valuable wetlands for preserves or parks. Local and state governments need wetlands assessments for management and planning of existing and future public lands. And the Federal government has mandated that wetlands receive more attention. As our understanding of wetlands functions increases, the ability to identify and delineate them becomes even more critical. Practical Handbook for Wetland Identification and Delineation defines wetlands, describes their functions, and presents a variety of methods used to assess the extent of wetlands. Easy-to-use, it offers solutions to real-world problems and covers important subjects such as methods for identifying and delineating wetland boundaries, evaluating wetlands using aerial photography, indicators of hydrological, chemical, and biological processes, soil surveys, and plant measurements. The book also discusses methodological approaches to optimizing wetland delineation and permitting. The focus on wetlands by the Federal government has resulted in more stringent oversight by the U.S. Army Core of Engineers (USACE). This new level of federal oversight has underlined the lack of general knowledge related to regulatory requirements. Project delay and work interruptions are real, potential problems for landowners. Practical Handbook for Wetlands Identification and Delineation presents the strategies and methods for making wetlands identifications and delineations that meet federal requirements. ... Read more

Product Description

The wetland is a murky, moist, and mysterious world. Atop its glittering surface and beneath its shadowy depths, birds, bass, minks, and muskrats struggle to survive and flourish. Madeleine Dunphy’s lyrical prose shows the relationships between the wetland’s plants and animals, giving young readers a clear picture of how each living creature depends on the others for survival. Illustrator Wayne McLoughlin adds stunning visuals,  with luminous, detailed paintings that convey the fragile beauty and complexity of this critically important ecological community.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wet, wild and wonderful!
As an avid birder (bird watcher) I have a deep appreciation for, and attraction to, our wetland areas.I have visited great ones all over the country including the swamps of Southern Missouri, Florida's Everglades and New Mexico'sBosque del Apache NWR.And although many places like those still exist, by 1993 half the world's wetlands had been drained and that percentage is MUCH higher for the US.It is ironic to me that many of the wetlands that I can visit in order to view and photograph wild birds exist primarily due to the efforts and fees paid by hunters.Any effort to explain the importance of these unique ecosystems to the general public is much needed and appreciated. It is even more necessary to involve children as they are the ones who will inherit these precious natural resources."Here Is the Wetlands", another book in the Web of Life series does just that.

By introducing the habitat and inhabitants of a freshwater marsh one by one, Madeleine Dunphy not only tells of the diversity of life present but also their interdependence. The watercolor illustrations by Wayne McLoughlin are striking in their gorgeous simplicity and captivating use of rich, luxurious color. At the end of the book is a section that deals with the issue of our loss of wetlands and a plea for the reader to become involved in their protection. This is an excellent book for children of any age but especially for those in elementary school.

DISCLAIMER: Although I was not paid for this review, I was given the book for free by the author in the hope that I would review it.Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully captures life in the wetlands
The "Here is..." series of books featuring animals in their natural habitats by author Madeleine Dunphy are well-written and educational. Most are also beautifully illustrated with vibrant full-color pictures which enhance the cumulative verse style employed by the author.

In "Here is the Wetland", readers are introduced to the animals that inhabit the wetlands, specifically the freshwater marsh. Some of these animals include the muskrat, mink, bass, heron, frog, snake, blackbirds, coots, ducks, etc. The cumulative style employed here makes this book a perfect read-aloud for young children (ages 4-8), and may also motivate beginning/intermediate readers. My five-and-a-half-year old daughter enjoyed reading this book, and was entranced by the rich life in the wetlands, not to mention the detailed and vivid illustrations of wetland animals. Highly recommended for children ages 4-8.

Product Description
David Carroll has dedicated his life to art and to wetlands. He is as passionate about swamps, bogs, and vernal ponds and the creatures who live in them as most of us are about our families and closest friends. He knows frogs and snakes, muskrats and minks, dragonflies, water lilies, cattails, sedges--everything that swims, flies, trudges, slithers, or sinks its roots in wet places. In this "intimate and wise book" (Sue Hubbell), Carroll takes us on a lively, unforgettable yearlong journey, illustrated with his own elegant drawings, through the wetlands andreveals why they are so important to his life and ours -- and to all life on Earth.Amazon.com Review
Wetland. The very word makes environmentalists swoon and real estate developers curse. While squishy places like swamps and bogs used to be considered unfit for human habitation, the 19th and 20th centuries saw a veritable festival of "reclamation" as the world's wetlands were transformed into land usable by humans. But what beauty and natural utility was lost in the process? In Swampwalker's Journal, David M. Carroll transcends the political to find joy in the damp places he has loved since he was a boy. In chapters describing his favorite vernal pools, marshes, swamps, ponds, and bogs, Carroll describes hours spent watching animals frolic in their moist, vegetated homes. Braving mosquito bites and the wrath of bears, he embarks on a journey through these mysterious, underappreciated ecosystems and records their ups and downs faithfully, complete with exquisite illustrations. You feel almost as if you're reading his field journals, the writing is so immediate and full of detail. Here, he describes a hunting heron:

He keeps as still as the breathless afternoon for a time, then moves again, taking several slow strides, each accompanied by a rhythmic, gradual curvilinear extension and retraction of his serpentine neck. From time to time he redirects his head, his long, sharp bill poised, his avid eyes ablaze with focus and intent. His movements are effected with such heron stealth that even in motion he could pass unseen.

Carroll saves his plea for the preservation of these fragile, fading landscapes until the epilogue, allowing readers to become as charmed as he is by the wetlands he loves. Annie Dillard calls David Carroll "a genius, a madman, a national treasure," and you'll agree when you've read this beautiful piece of nature writing, an unforgettable "tour de swamp." --Therese Littleton ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book about New England wetlands
I really liked this book. The book is a series of short stories, really, each focusing on one of the author's experiences in a different type of New England wetland. Together they make a great whole, but you could pick it up and enjoy reading the chapters in any order. The prose leans towards the poetic, so sometimes it was hard to pick it up and read, but once I did, I also had trouble putting it down! I liked the book so much it made me go out and look for frogs last week!

4-0 out of 5 stars Walk A Wetland With This Guy
Well-written and an easy read.It made me want to do 2 things: Strap on my waders and head to the nearest wetland to see what I can find and order the other books in his "wet sneaker" trilogy.Enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well-written piece of nature writing; a veritable feast!
The book is a pleasure to read although I did get bogged down a bit toward the end. It is obvious that this guy lived with his subject. Some of the identification descriptions of flora and fauna can become overwhelming to the reader not familiar with the northeastern environs. But, on the whole a well written book destined to become a classic in nature writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars How Many Kinds of Wet Land
In addition to what everyone else has said (the poetry of the language, the gorgeous drawings, etc.), this book is especially useful in that it describes the relationships between all the different kinds of wetlands, and within riparian zones in general. It should be required reading for every developer and community activist intent on preserving some hydrologic function in natural areas. This is a wonderful, wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A glimpse of life

Product Description
Louisiana is in a desperate battle to save what remains of its coastal wetlands, which are disappearing at the rate of a football field–size area every 38 minutes. Most people are unaware of the devastating transformation of this remote region, though the effects are detrimental for the entire country economically, culturally, and environmentally. Hoping that art will inspire concern where statistics have not, and focusing on the marshlands’ beauty rather than their destruction, nature photographer C. C. Lockwood and painter Rhea Gary have joined together in Marsh Mission to show that a picture is worth at least a thousand words. Their rapturous thirty photographs and thirty paintings may well leave one speechless.

For an entire year, C.C. immersed himself in the wetlands, living on a houseboat—the Wetland Wanderer—with his wife, Sue, a schoolteacher, who created an interactive classroom from the boat via the Internet. They covered more than 5,000 miles, taking the pulse of their environs and documenting everything from oil rigs to egrets and vivid setting suns. Rhea sometimes joined the Lockwoods and other times ventured out in her own bateau, designed to hold an easel for making oil-on-paper sketches. She produced the final oil paintings on canvas in her studio.

In his photographs, C.C. captures the quiet, hidden activity of the wetlands in all their paradisaical aspects.Breathtaking detail—the reward of day-in and day-out vigilance. Rhea conveys her emotional response to the light, color, and mood of the landscape with bold impressionistic strokes in raspberry, tangerine, lime, fuchsia, azure, and yellow. Hot—like the culture and the climate of south Louisiana. Together, the two impart an aesthetic experience that explains better than any map or scientific data the irreplaceable treasure being lost. A narrative by each artist enhances their visual testimony and gives a rare glimpse into the creative process.

Formed by silt deposits from the Mississippi River, Louisiana’s coastal region constitutes 40 percent of all U.S. marshlands, but it is sinking at an alarming rate because the river’s leveed banks—while essential for flood control and ship navigation—obstruct silt replenishment. With Marsh Mission, C. C. Lockwood and Rhea Gary offer a visionary tribute to this endangered, national natural resource. Their images should arouse awareness, appreciation, and, especially, action. ... Read more

As a biologist somewhat new to the Southeastern US, this great reference book met several of my needs, related both to teaching and conducting research. It is great to be able to ID plants, both terrestrial and aquatic, and this book really helps out with the flora occurring in the coastal wetlands.Very nice!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful manual for coastal wetland plants:
Sections include:
-Coastal Wetland Ecology: A General Overview (different tidal wetland habitats, their description and characteristics, & typical species of each)
-Identification of Coastal Wetland Plants (keyed system, easy to use diagnostic keys)
-WETLAND PLANT DESCRIPTIONS and ILLUSTRATIONS (this is over half the book, organized by environment:Each entry with name, common and scientific names, family, full description, habitat, range, similar species, and very accurate diagram drawings by Abigail Rorer.Over 150 species covered).
-Places to Observe Coastal Wetlands, with maps
-Sources of Other Information, References, Glossary, and Index.

Should the author ever desire to revise or write another edition, I hope he doesn't change much, as it is good, but he might consider adding a few key upland plants which grow in extreme proximity to coastal wetland plants; these might be American Beach Grass (Ammophila brevigulata), Beachpeas (Lathyrus maritimus), Seaside Rose (Rosa), Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica), Bayberry (Myrica pensylvanica), Sea Celery (Ligusticum scoticum), Common Sow Thistle or Beach Lettuce (Sondus oleraceae) - but these are easily learned on their own.

This is an excellent, very well written reference manual, useful to environmental consultants, wetland delineators, and botanists.Get a plastic book cover to protect it, and use it in the field (or salt-marsh, as the case may be). This may be the best text on this particular subject.-DMM ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet!
This is a really great book. It explains way more then you would expect for a field guide. It goes in depth about each plant, animals that depend on them and other interesting tidbits that you wont find in any other guide. The awsome illustrations are done so beautifully and true to life no one should have any problems idtentifying plants on the trail. They also truly give this book a nice touch. It's like a book of old documenting new discoveries!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is a must have book if you live in areas with swamps/bogs.Its so accurate I'm just amazed. It is also very easy to use.It has drawings and it talks not only about id of the plants but also their "lifestyle" (e.g. how they reproduce, various ideosyncasies of the plants, insects that are associated etc.)Each plant also has a short section on lore which adds a nice bit of history.I really like the book

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!
For those people who already kind of know their way around the forest, and are more interested in what they are going to see ASSOCIATED with the plants they see than what an Audobon book says, this is a naturalist's dream come true!

Great b/w illustrations of not only leaves and fruits, but insects, diseases, toothmarks, clawmarks and nests that can be found on and around the trees and plants listed in the book...

Also highly recommended is the Forest and Thicket book by the same authors...

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique resource for understanding this ecosystem
The authors' love of nature and years of experience clearly show in this unique field guide. Most books have an encyclopedic and repetitive approach. In contrast, this book looks at the individual plants and howthey fit into the entire ecosystem ranging from companion plants, anddependent bird, mammal, and insect species.I have not seen another bookthat describes eastern wetlands in as much detail and yet still be highlyreadable. ...
