Product Description

Urbanization of the Earth’s population will have increased the Earth’s urban population from less than one billion in 1950 to five billion by 2030. Managing water for this burgeoning urban population is one of the critical needs for humanity. This book uses a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to examine the urban water environment. Water has multiple roles: municipal water supply, aquatic habitat, landscape aesthetics and recreation. Increasingly, urban water is reused, serving multiple purposes. Humans alter the urban hydrologic cycle and the chemical and physical integrity of urban water systems and resources. Some of those changes are beneficial, and others harmful. Understanding those changes and impacts requires expertise and perspective from a wide range of disciplines. Chapter authors represent this diversity of expertise, with expertise in surface and groundwater hydrology, civil and environmental engineering, environmental policy, urban planning, law, geomorphology, and recreation management.

Product Description
As pollution from cars, trucks, and land-based stationary sources has been more tightly controlled over the last 40 years, the contribution of ships and port operations to air pollution in port cities has become more important. In the same period, foreign trade has grown dramatically; thus, pollution from shipping and port operations would be growing as a percentage of total emissions, even if the emissions were regulated to the same degree as other sectors. This book provides information regarding pollution from ships and port facilities and discusses some of the measures being implemented and considered by local, state, and federal regulatory agencies. This book consists of public documents which have been located, gathered, combined, reformatted, and enhanced with a subject index, selectively edited and bound to provide easy access. ... Product Description
FROM THE INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, industrial water pollution control has undergone vast changes. Public Law 92-500 passed in 1972 primarily targeted conventional pollutants such as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and suspended solids and as a result wastewater treatment plants were designed to meet these objectives. In recent years volatile organics, priority pollutants, aquatic toxicity and some heavy metals have received attention in specific industrial effluents. In some cases nitrogen and phosphorus will have specific effluent limitations. If the wastewater contains volatile organics such as benzene or toluene, these organics must be removed prior to biological treatment or basins must be covered with off-gas treatment. The technology choice to meet these objectives in a cost-effective manner will be site specific. In 1976 EPA established effluent limitations for priority pollutants in the organic chemicals, plastics and synthetic fibre industries (OCPSF). These are pollutant specific guidelines expressed as an effluent concentration. Depending on the specific chemical involved, the biological treatment process or a source treatment technology may provide the most economical solution. Aquatic toxicity poses a major problem in industrial water pollution control. Because it is frequently non-specific it is difficult to identify appropriate cost effective technologies. As a general rule, biological treatment should be the first option with more costly physical chemical technologies employed only in cases where the toxicity-causing chemicals are non-biodegradable. ... Product Description
This book is a collection of papers presented at the 2nd International River Quality Symposium. The papers give case studies of the quality of rivers in different parts of the world, focusing particularly on the polluted Vistula River in Poland and the revived Will amette River in Oregon, USA which was the subject of a major cleaning operation in the 1970s. The book provides valuable information on the quality of rivers in Eastern Europe, particulary Poland. It is timely since, with the collapse of communism, Eastern European countries are faced with tackling huge environmental problems created by the lack of investment in environmental technology. The situation in Poland is contrasted with the USA and UK where water pollution problems have largely been overcome. ... Read more

Product Description
The state of the art of the impact assessment of recycled hazardous waste materials on surface and ground waters is presented. The topics include chemodynamics, toxicology, modeling and information systems.

Due to the wealth of information on this topic, the texts of T. Kassim (ed.): Environmental Impact Assessment are published in three separate volumes: vol. 1: Concepts, Methodology and Chemical Analysis; vol. 2: Risk Analysis and vol. 3: Engineering Modeling and Sustainability.

The book serves as a practical conceptual guide for those who have professional responsibility for the monitoring, design, management, or conduct of environmental impact assessment. It is believed that the book will prove useful to the reader who, regardless of disciplinary background, wants to examine in greater detail the kinds of interdisciplinary contributions to contemporary decision-making processes that characterize modern impact assessment project development.

Each volume contains the contents of all volumes. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Will encourage novice readers
You know, I got a good taste of literature (Frankenstein, Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde, Dracula) through graphic novels. I'm glad to review yet another graphic novel (the other being Dracula Madness). With so many kids struggling to read at grade level, I highly recommend these new series as they will encourage novice readers.

Claire and The Water Wish is fresh, action-packed and targets the most important thing to girls in this age group - friendship.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for Younger Kids
Reviewed by Galia Popov (age 11) for Reader Views (6/09)

"Claire and the Water Wish" is about a girl named Claire and her friend Jet. When Claire moves to the country, she makes best friends with Jet. But when Jet wins a new camera, she seems like she'd rather take pictures of popular kids than hang out with Claire. Claire makes friends with Sky, a girl from Lovesick Lake who's on her team for a project at school. Sky tells Claire that people are dumping in Lovesick Lake, but no one has actually caught them at it. One day, Jet and Sky see some people dumping into the lake. The people chase them, but Jet and Sky get lost. Claire finds them, and in the end the three girls save the day.

I thought that this book was fairly well written, but it was slightly below my age, aimed more towards seven to nine-year-olds. Maybe it's because I'm older than the book's age range, or maybe because "Claire and the Water Wish" is a graphic novel, but I thought that the story was a little too flat and predictable. The characters could have a little more depth, and the plot could be a little more exciting. An example is at the end, when the bad guys are caught. The girls signal a ranger in a helicopter, call the police, fly over to the bad guys, and the police catch them and take them to jail. I would like a more exciting storyline. It would be more interesting if the bad guys escape the first time and have to be caught again. Even so, the book was a pretty good read.

One of the good things about this book is that the illustrations were great, especially in the part where Jet and Claire go to the market. I liked the pictures of stalls and customers, which were interesting because you could see what everyone was selling. I also enjoyed the crafts included at the end.

I think that "Claire and the Water Wish" by Janice Poon would be better for seven to nine-year olds, or any younger kids interested in the environment. Though the story is bland, the illustrations are good enough on their own to make me want to read this book. ... Read more
