3-0 out of 5 stars Great diagnostics, not much on treatments
Comprehensive professional reference about rabbit care, diseases and disease processes. It is British. There is scant information on how to treat the things it helps you diagnose. Not a lay person reference, but geared toward veterinary professionals

5-0 out of 5 stars No regrets to buy this veterinary medicine/surgery book
This book starts good with actual data, evidence, feelings, expectations, extensive experiences and generally shows like veterinary medical bible. I feel no worry in practicing on and love reading many times about how to handling simple pain even complex life saving care. Thanks to Frances Harcourt-Brown for presenting this very helpful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, wish it wasn't so expensive
Invaluable! If you breed or care for a lot of rabbits you'll find this book to be a great tool. Its a bit pricey, but if a rabbit ever falls ill under your care you'll be glad you have it on hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars worth the money for anyone interested in rabbit health
I HIGHLY reccommend this book to anyone interested in rabbit health, veterinarian, pet owner or rabbit breeder. I am the latter and found this book to be incredibly useful. One will need a basic knowledge of general biology to get their way through the book. I've raised rabbits very successfully for seven years. After reading this I changed many things I thought i had been doing right but now, thanks to the book, I am getting even better results. Its well worth every penny. I've won awards for rabbit knowledge so I had no idea that I'd learn a thousand times more from this book. i've actually taught our veterinarian a few things as she is the one who recommended the book to me. I've learned the most amazing and useful facts that have worked wonders, and they are the simplest things. Who knew that regular honey had healing properties strong enough to cure my rabbits severe case of ulcerative pododermatitis? he was so bad off the vet thought that i was crazy to not put him down. but I'm happy to say he's very much alive, 4 months later and is able to live an almost normal life. this is only one of millions (I mean MILLIONS) of useful little facts that will completely changed the most skilled rabbit fancier's way of looking at things. this book has saved the life of one of my rabbits and has given me sucessful suggestions for treatments to several other problems that even my vet who is a 25-year rabbit breeder herself didn't know. i urge you to get this book. It really can save the lives of rabbits and teach the most knowledeable person many new things

5-0 out of 5 stars Textbook of Rabbit Medicine has much good information
Rabbit medicine is a difficult subject to cover.Although our knowledge has increased greatly in the last ten years, there is still much we do not know.Harcourt-Brown does a very good job of describing medical problems that are common in rabbits, and provides information on treatment. She also provides valuable information on biological characteristics and husbandry.

The only thing that I would have liked to see more of in the book are pictures.Otherwise, the book has been a valuable addition to my library, and I will definitely purchase any further revisions of the book.I recommend the book highly to anyone interested in rabbit care who has some knowledge of veterinary medicine. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Ok...But not Great
I am in school to become a registered veterinary technician so this book was a requirement for our Pharmacology class. The first three chapters in this book are absolute Gold as far as information goes but the rest is really lacking. Many of the common veterinary drugs covered in my class were not even in the book so I had to go elsewhere to find all the information I needed.Although the drugs that were covered were covered well and in a friendly layout, the drugs they didn't include really diminished the usability of this book.A real disappointment as far as textbooks go in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
This book is awesome! It has provided me with so much knowledge of drug uses, interactions, reactions... etc. Working in a vet's office this book has been a great help to me. It talks at the veterinary technicians level, as opposed to reading a lot of information that just goes right over your head. It is geared from the nurses point of view and is organized into easy to find categories, with all the similar drugs listed near it, along with possible interactions/reactions. A must have for the vet tech!

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is a very good pharmacology reference!
I found this book very helpful for me while I was in school and while in practice. The only thing that I had a little trouble with is cross referencing the trade names of the drugs with what was listed in theappendendix.Otherwise it is an excellent book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
This product was very helpful and informational. The calculations were thouroughly explained, however I wished that there were more problems to practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I had this years ago
I was very happy with this pocket sized book that explains in plain, non-math-type-person language how to do simple algebraic equations, corret your decimals and fractions, how to and then a few exercises with answers.I wish I'd had this in 8th grade, and it is an excellent review book for those of us who lose track of the numbers and "cancels" in our l o n g equations with too many L, mL, minutes, hours, etc.Worth the buy, even if not required.

5-0 out of 5 stars Starts from the bottom and works through to the end
I am math challenged. I am studying for the VTNE and this book is perfect for me. I also like the plastic cover for long life of the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommend to people interested in equine medicine
I am a 4th year vet student and I have found this book very helpful with my clinical cases. There is a great deal of information and goes more indepth then one might need for average cases. Overall, I would recommend this to anyone doing clinical work with advanced cases in equine medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Logical, thorough and easy to read
This book is a stand out as the best equine internal medicine text.Throughout the book the authors consistently review the pathophysiology involved, the evidence currently available and to a lesser degree their own personal experience. This is in stark contrast to many books which are written in the format of "I do it therefore ...".The emphasis on pathophysiology prompts understanding not just regurgitation while the presentation of evidence follows the direction of the profession towards evidence based medicine.

The book is presented as a comprehensive resource and does not work so well as a quick look up text as it can be difficult to find specifics in a hurry. However, for the purpose of indepth study and understanding of equine medicine the book is an excellent resource.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent in parts, but incomplete
When I first got this book, I thought it was excellent. It is easy to read. The majority of the information is up to date (for 1998) and in depth without losing relevance. The book also by and large avoids the repetition seen in Smith's Large Animal Internal Medicine (2nd Ed) and is well organized.

Like any multi-author book, there are stronger and weaker chapters. The cardiology chapter is excellent, well-laid out and informative. The neonatology chapter is basic, but well presented and good. The section on vestibular disease reads easily and is full of good information. The section on toxicology (which I have always struggled with!) is well laid out, logical, and far easier to read than the equivalent section in Smith. However, the section on HYPP is poorly organized and leaves the reader confused as to the clinical signs and treatment of this important (in the USA) condition. The section on Hypertonic Saline is directly copied from a review in Compendium six or so years previously, to the extent that it still lists papers in press that have long since been published. This and the scanty fluid therapy chapter make disappointing reading. However, on the whole the information in the book is excellent, and I was initially very happy with the book.

However, when I came to study for my ACVIM Large Animal Internal Medicine boards, I realized how incomplete the book is. As one example, there is no information on Equine Motor Neuron Disease in the Neurology Chapter. There are many other omissions which devalue this book as a resource.

I still think this book represents the best information available in textbook form on Equine Internal Medicine. However, I hope the editors will work hard to fill in the gaps for the second edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best equine medicine book. Not a quick reference.
A great review of equine internal medicine. Easily the best of the books on this subject currently available. The content is well organised and indexed, which makes this text far easier to navigate than Smith's LargeAnimal Internal Medicine. The content, inevitably, reflects the geographiclocation of most of the authors (North America).

Although the bookcontains much data on clinical pathology and drug doses, these are buriedin the text. It would have been good to have these in an appendix as can befound in Current Therapy in Equine Medicine 4. This book is thus notsuitable as a quick reference. The book would also be helped by a snappysummary at the head of each sub-section.

However, this book accuratelyreflects current thoughts on equine medicine, and is highly recommended ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My wife loved it
It came in the day after Mother's Day, but my wife still loved it. I'd been wanting to get this for her for a while. It is very well put together. We've lent other horse books of ours out to our friends, only to wait a while to get them back, she said this one isn't going anywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Desk Reference
I own/operate a small breeding/showing operation that usually has 20-25 horse at one time.I have always had an intrest in veterinary medicine and have tried to educate myself to a level of competency to which I can treat most of the issues that arise.I found this book to be the best of the six vet reference books that I own.Whenever I have an issue, this is where I turn first. It is extremely well organized and the amount of information and detail is tremendous. It has helped me with difficult diagnosis and treatment. I would highly recommend this book to every horse owner.

2-0 out of 5 stars Revised? Updated?
I am a horse owner, have been for years, and I thought that this would be a great reference book. However, it seems that whenever I need to do research on something specific, the information is either not in the book, contrary to what my vet has said, or just isn't helpful.Look up "cribbing"- a passing mention of "cording of the neck muscles that results when he forces air into his stomach." Period. No possible causation, no mention of diet, suggestions to alleviate, the latest research, nothing.Look up "Deworming"- you get photos of the nasty critters that may inhabit your horses digestive system, and some suggestions about how to handle them.I was looking for information on the latest info on ivermectin resistance, rotation schedules, etc., and that wasn't there. I also couldn't find a chart of the entire skeletal system. There are drawings and photos of all sorts of conditions and pieces/parts of anatomy that may be helpful at some point, but so far, this book is rather disappointing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative book
Very informative book.Until now it has provided me answers to all my questions. It has fulfilled my expectations, things are easier for me to understand.I will definitely recomand this book to all my colleagues.

2-0 out of 5 stars Horses have no place in this book
I believe that a vast amount of viable space is wasted on horses in this book. While they technically are large animals, they're so vastly different from cattle that they deserve and have their own books which are great.
I think this book isn't very well written and doesn't go into the pathology of diseases very well... at all.I hate the layout, and I think some ideas are just skimmed over or not mentioned at all.
I would not recommend this book, but the problem is there isn't another one out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable reference for large animal medicine
This textbook is, in my experience, the best single medicine reference for large animals. It is designed for the graduate veterinarian and is not easy to read, but contains an immense amount of information (plus references) in a usable format. The index is comprehensive, which is useful as some conditions are discussed by different authors in disparate sections of the text. The text is divided into body systems, then subdivided into equine and ruminant diseases. There are also useful rule-out lists for major clinical signs provided at the beginning of the book. The illustrations and photographs are black-and-white and are largely the same as the previous edition, but this edition contains well-updated text material.Detractors from this text include minimal specific treatment information for some disease processes and the lack of a formulary. It also does not cover swine or camelid species.Nonetheless, I find this book far easier to read and use (with more comprehensive information) than the similar Blood and Radostits text.If you care to invest in several texts instead of a single one, try the Current Veterinary Therapy Equine Practice and Food Animal Practice (very easy to read). However, if you choose these keep in mind that you may need more than one volume of each, as each CVT volume is not comprehensive. My copy of Smith is constantly at hand, and has seen a great deal of use since I purchased it.I recommend this book to any large animal practitioner as a necessary reference. ... I'd like to really rate this book, it looks great, but here is the best way to put it.I think schools are in cahoots with book makers to make lots of money. Why?Because at my school, about 85 percent of the books we bought for our classes, we never referenced at all....And if we did, a teacher would ask something, and one student would pull out there copy, and just give a quick tidbit of info on the topic at hand from the book.Thats it....Really, and this was one of those books! Maybe it was because my classes were all taught by veterinarians and they had there own notes they made and taught from what they wanted us to have to know by the schools standards.Regardless, I had awesome vet teachers at my college and they all had there own practice they owned and they truly taught from experience! But seriously, from now on, I am gonna pass on buying school books because it seems they never get used and the teachers have what they need from their notes. The days of grade school periods where we would follow along reading paragraph by paragraph though each chapter are way gone and this is proof!Seriously, save your money and buy a good laptop!!!Thats all we needed in our school----need notes or an important article?Ask the teacher, and they would email it to you on the spot!Got homework?Type it up and email it to the teacher also!!Everything is laptop done for school learning! So invest in a LAPTOP!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value.
Clearly written and illustrated. Bought the book for my daughter who is going into VT. She did very well in a recent competition, using the book as her sole written study reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Same text - different author (and chapter authors) as earlier edition authored by Pratt
Excellent book, however, I did not realize I have a (used) earlier edition by Pratt. Interesting that it's the same text verbatim in most sections, yet different authors are credited. That's why I didn't realize until I'd already received the 2nd edition copy that I have essentially the same book already! Seems a bit misleading to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thurough text
The text is a great study aid for veterinary medicine. I highly recommend it for understanding the reasons why we do a procedure the way we do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool for students
The author's writing style is easy to read with plenty of realistic examples of what one might encounter in a veterinary practice. Lists of drugs are arranged in tables describing their names, functions, and occasionally their side effects. The only downside is the CD's AccuCal tests; while the CD helps one study the tests are very simple in that if you word the answer slightly differently (i.e. BID means twice a day not two times a day or twice daily) it is automatically counted as wrong causing frustration for the test taker. Other than that the book is EXCELLENT!! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The index for this book is completely incorrect....:(
Got the brand new edition for the GF and found out that the index is completely out of order.... not cool

5-0 out of 5 stars A bible for the equine practitioner
Since I have all the editions of this book starting from the 3rd one (thus probably not all) I can say that these books have successfully accompanied me through my professional life. This 6th edition is no exception and will be a bible for the equine practitioner and a reference book for the scholar aswell.
Between the specific sections written by experts and the comprehensive drug listing and dosing at the end, it is definately a must for everyone that has to or wants to deal with equine internal medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bastante Util!!

5-0 out of 5 stars good
I had to return it because i needed the reading book that came with it

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent learning tool!
McCurnin's workbook is an excellent source to study without the repitition of reading when trying to learn and remember the material.I find that the worksheets are very helpful as a final tool for reviewing.I enjoy doing word puzzles and cannot put one down until I have figured it out. That is what this book is all about. After struggling to complete some of the games or puzzles, the info becomes engraved in your head!Even though not required, I still do all the workbook activities to test myself and also I find them an entertaining and fun way to learn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential study tool
This workbook is a great study tool to use along with the main text book. Before I had it, reading and rereading the text was my method of learning the material, which quickly became boring.Doing the exercises in this workbook are a much more interesting way to study, and sometimes even point out some misinterpretations I had made.

5-0 out of 5 stars Companion workbook for McCurnin Clinical Textbook for Veterinary Technicians
I highly recommend this book if you are using the text. Material is excellent for review and self-test.

1-0 out of 5 stars YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO USE THIS BOOK!!
It is NOT stated anywhere that just because you can buy this book does not mean that you can USE this book. This book is a workbook that is meant to accompany the clinical textbook of the same name. It is a question and answer book that does NOT come with the answers. It states that the answers are avail. through an interactive learning website (evolve) but if you are NOT an instructor...you may NOT have access to the answers, rendering the book utterly useless for those who buy it for personal growth, or independent study. (For example if you are like me and need to study for the VTNE or state board exam but have already graduated vet tech school.)If you are not a vet tech student where this is required text, you are NOT going to be able to get access to the answers...rendering the book totally useless. This book is sold here, at barns and noble, web med and many other places..NO WHERE is it stated that this is the case until you OPEN the book and read the last sentence on the first page, then are led to the evolve website and 30 min later you find out you cannot be granted access to the answers if your not a teacher. I personally called several other distributers of this book that state falsely that the answers are provided and had them CHECK if they had a copy that indeed provided the answers. ALL THREE different places admitted that they had advertised it falsely and that the answers are in fact NOT available. BUYER BEWARE!!!
Shame too...this book is a DIRECT and fantastic companion to the 7th edition of the clinical textbook. I am very disappointed that I cannot use this would be great resource to study for the VTNE and state board exam. I am a vet tech grad (1999) that was using the 3rd edition. This book is ten times what the 3rd edition is. (referring to the clinical textbook not the workbook..workbooks were previousl unavailable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!
I used this book in my vet tech program and found it to be WONDERFULLY easy to learn the meanings. It was the first time I was introduced to latin and other root words that are important for understanding human or animal terminology. For example: Poly mean "many", Gingiva- "gums", gastro- "Stomach", itis- "inflammation of".

Not sure why the book has such poor reviews. It's organized well, in sections with an awesome glossary of medical terms in the back.I found it fun to learn from this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Won't do it again
This was sold "like new", however, it was written in and not in very good shape.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too bad, for a beginner.
I really liked the crossword puzzles at the end of each chapter to help you remember and reuse the words, but I thought it could have been organized more clearly.Still, very helpful. ... Read more
