5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent ultrasound base
i truly recommend this book as a 1st read for radiology residents. very well written and very easy to understand. simply, a must-have book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of pictures
I liked this a book a lot because it has 3-5 pictures of the common imaging findings of common disease (eg appendicitis) and at least a single pic of all diseases that it describes.About half the book is a huge OB section.Although it is ~500 pages, 50% of all the space is taken up by large, clear pics. The text is consistently concise and informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just finished...
Not entirely comprehensive but a very good middle-ground text.Lot's of good images and very easy to read format.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars US book
I have used this book prior to buying it and found it very useful. Only downside is not cardiac ultrasound section.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good residency book
This review honestly is not totally personal..
I was told by many residents in our program that this book would be THE ultrasound book I would need.
After I started reading it and referring back to it when faced by many different clinical settings I believe the advise I got is true.
The book is well organized with appropriate headings and subheadings for general, vascular and OB/GYN ultrasound disease.
Its language is straightforward and each section simplifies the findings and nicely describes the differential diagnosis.
This is what I was told about this book and personally find in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars $$ saver
these book were used condition, but still in very good shape!!especially for the money, i would definitely buy them all over again!thanks for the great product

5-0 out of 5 stars Best and most comprehensive ultrasound text available!
Boy, I can't believe that there are 3 1* reviews for this ultrasound 'gold standard' of textbooks; 2 of those commenting complained about the Amazon service without even discussing (or never having seen the text!); the other 1* review was useless.

Now, I'm an academic abdominal radiologist who does interpret ultrasound examinations; the 2-volume text provides the most comprehensive coverage available in one place, i.e. a tome w/ two books; I've owned two editions of this text and will purchase the next one when released - an essential part of any library for those involved with ultrasound procedures.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
did not receive the item, just an email stating that the order was cancelled and monies would be returned to my account as the item was incorrectly priced! unreliable! bet it wouldn't be that easy if i was the one that decided the book was too expensive after the sale had alreadt gone through...

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Poor
I ordered these books online on May 21st and still have not recieved them (It is June 22nd). I wrote the company asking for what is going on and they still have not written me back. I start school soon and I don't know if Im even going to have my books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate textbook for Sonographers!!!
This book has surpassed all my expectations. US pictures are excellent and it has everything and more. It is more than a complete text for reference for sonographers. It also talks about patient preparation and scanning techniques. After buying almost every ultrasound book out there,I finally found the book that has all the answers I was looking for. Save your money from buying other books. This is "IT". If there is a "wow" rating, I would give it to this one. ... Read more

Product Description
FUNDAMENTALS OF MUSCULOSKELETAL ULTRASOUND packs a big punch for such a compact book. It teaches the resident, clinician and even medical student, how to perform and read musculoskeletal ultrasounds, while highlighting the basic anatomy needed to perform and interpret ultrasounds and the salient points needed to make diagnosis. Key anatomy, concepts, diseases and even controversies are highlighted, rather than presenting a lengthy tome covering the A to Z's of musculoskeletal ultrasound.

  • Organized in a simple, outline format (emphasizing lists and tables) for easy access to information.
  • Features almost 1200 high quality images that clearly demonstrate essential concepts, techniques and interpretation skills.
  • Provides step-by-step instructions on how to perform musculoskeletal ultrasound techniques and interpret musculoskeletal ultrasound findings.
  • Reviews sonographic anatomy of peripheral joints to help you understand the anatomy so you can interpret ultrasound scans with confidence.
  • Reviews the sonographic appearances of common musculoskeletal pathologies to clearly differentiate one condition from another.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
The book includes tons of image examples of normal and pathology. The references to the images are not the clearest so it takes a while to figure out which imaging is being referred to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentals of MSK ULTRASOUND
This is a easy and practical review for clinicians who are just starting ultrasound in clinical practice

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a great book, my practice recently bought a couple of ultrasounds and we bought a couple of books to keep on hand. The other physicians were passing this one book around so much, I had to buy another copy. The pictures are very helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars DUS
A perfect and easy too read book with many pictures. Informative and with many good pictures of both normal and pathology tissue.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is OK
I bought this book and also bought Musculoskeletal Ultrasound for the Extremities: A Practical Guide to Songography of the Extremities by Randy E Moore. I use this book and I find it really helpful, good explanation of questions and concept.
It is highly recommended for SPI exam

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book For SPI Exam
I used this book to prepare for my SPI Exam. The text and explanation are excellent, easy to read and understand. The book is much better than the other books I used in the past. I look forward to using other products from them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for review SPI.
It is a nice book for SPI regarding ARDMS. I found lot of new themes and ideas regarding ARDMS exam from this book. I think it is the best reveiw book for SPI I have gone through.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you are looking for a SPI book with only questions and answers to review for the ARDMS exam, buy this book.
I just passed the ARDMS SPI test and used an old version of Kremkau's "Diagnostic Ultrasound Principles and Instruments" andOwens "Ultrasound Physics Review" to review.I recommend this book if you are just looking for questions and answers (more than 500 hundred plus 120 for the CME with no answers and the CME costs an extra $40).The book goes into more detail than the test especially on vascular. This book will not help you learn the material but it will be helpful to review especially if you do not take a review class.

But if you're looking at this book you care more about the SPI test than the book so here I go.The test was not hard and did not go into as much detail as I had anticipated (ie only one questionon Rayleigh scatters and none on Reynolds #, Snells or Poisuille Law). Most of the artifact questions were on temporal resolution and enhancement. A couple on mirror artifacts. The two test object questions were on tissue equivalent phantoms. One question on using the range equation and one on the doppler equation.Three questions on annular array transducers.None on 3D or 1.5D transducers. One on harmonics. One was which intensity has the lowest power (sata etc).A couple on the beam former (it focuses and steers), One on apodization. two on phased array transducers. One on elevation slice thickness artifacts. One on mechanical index. Three on speed of sound in different tissues or range ambiguity. One on hydrophone, none on doppler test object. One on what is piezoelectric. One or two on the beam diagram, near field and focal point.A couple more on lateral resolution and beam diameter. One on linear array, none on curved but two on phased array (what can focus and steer).Several on the beam former and focusing (what is the focal diameter given the transducer diameter) Several on color doppler including one each on changing fq and aliasing, temporal resolution, autocorrelator and quadrature channel.A few on db (intensity is reduced by 3dB) and what is unit is intensity measured as (watt/cm2). One on Pt ID (what do you do first when you encounter an OP).One on what to do when your printer stops working (I fixed the jam but ARDMS might want you to call on someone). Many on properties of US including propagation speed and impedance and what effects them.Only one or two on bioefffects.A couple on reflection, none on refraction. None on display but one was how many grays are seen with a six bit memory.Nothing on pre and post processing. Not much on hemodynamics. Two question with images were of vessels one with low gain the other requiring the color angel to be changed.Sorry for the ramble but I want to get it down before I forget. That should give you a pretty good feel for what to study and best of luck. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very easy to follow book of ultrasound physics.
After trying to work my way through some other required textbooks, I kept hearing about this book being easier to understand and read. I decided to purchase it and there is no doubt it is the easiest read. The subject matter is presented in a straightforward manner and the editing makes it easy to find the information you want.It helped me pass one physics class and when I take the final I will definitely be using this book. I also sought out flashcards made by the author of the book as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars great tool for studying for the SPI exam
This is a really good book to study from when preparing to take the ARDMS physics registry exam. Everything is explained in easy to understand language, and some things that never made sense to me when I learned them the first time became crystal clear (what exactly is PRP, why multiply the thickness of the PZT element by 2, etc). There are questions at the end of nearly every chapter, along with an additional 600 questions in the back of the book. I'm not sure how good of a resource this would be when first learning the material, but it's definitely a great refresher.

That said, this book is a little dated at times. There are no mentions of multi-frequency probes, 3D/4D ultrasound, and newer technical advances. Therefore, I wouldn't use this as my only resource for studying for the physics registry.I used this book to complement my class notes.

4-0 out of 5 stars UUP
The book was in good condition and arrived sooner than i expected. It was just as the seller had mentioned that it was. i was very pleased and there were no nasty surprises.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is very easy to read and comprehend. It has great review questions and important topics/things to remember are highlighted in yellow boxes. This book is good for beginners and experts studying ultrasound physics. I highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Study Resource for the SPI Exam
This review is for the 3rd Edition of Edelman's Understanding Ultrasound Physics. As Mr. Ridgeway noted in his review, this book has a bronze cover and is the most recent edition.

Dr. Edelman presents the concepts in an orderly manner. Each chapter is a building block to the next.He words the material in a way that the average person can understand. Many ultrasound physics texts use terminology and principles which are far more technical, detailed and complex than necessary. Not this one!

I completely disagree with the reviewer who commented that Dr. Edelman advises that material be memorized and regurgitated.Edelman carefully and thoughtfully highlights important information that WILL be presented on the ARDMS SPI boards.Additionally each chapter is accompanied by review questions AND a comprehensive Exam Review at the back of the textbook.

**As a classroom instructor and tutor of ultrasound physics, I believe that "practice makes perfect."One of the the MOST VALUABLE features of this text is Edelman's Free X-Zone Offer. This can be found on the page before the Preface. It offers FREE access for 14 days to a bank of mock test questions. If you purchase this text, locate this page immediately, complete the form, and mail it!You will have 3 months to activate the exam.**

If you require more practice after the X-Zone exercises, I recommend trying"Appleton & Lange Review for the Ultrasonography Examination."

I have been using this textbook for five years. My students (and I) treasure this book.Thank you Dr. Edelman for helping us truly grasp the concepts of ultrasound physics and instrumentation! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Already well known book. Has a great reputation !!
I think there's no need to say with lengthy writing.
It covers anatomy in details, simple but major P/E and Hx, critical X-ray and MRI findings and invasive procedure under US guide. Could feel little bit huge and there are so many other books thinner. But, it was written with easy english so that you never feel it's heavy or huge once you get started.
I have 5 books that deals musculoskeletal Ultrasound. I can give my thumb to this book without any hesitancy.
These days people tries to cover spine and para spine structures such as thoracic, lumbar part.
I think it's controversial yet and it could show up in the next version of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent text
This is a very fine book, meticulously produced. It contains a wealth of information, presented in a lucid manner. The illustrations are exquisite. It is the perfect text for any physician or technologist engaged in ultrasound examination of the musculoskeletal system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tour de force in MSK ultrasoun
This book is a tour de force in MSK ultrasound. The authors comprehensively cover this expanding area of a technically driven field. Logically presented with multiple diagrams and images. Easy to read and well referenced. The normal anatomical section prior to pathology presentation prepares the reader for comparision between normal and abnormal imaging. This manual must be considered the gold standard reference. A must for those who have an interest in sono-anatomy, rehabilitaitve ultrasound imaging and through to the Diagnostic ultrasound imaging sonographer or radiologist. Consider this a must for ultrasound imaging

5-0 out of 5 stars Abdomen review
Hi,I would recommend this book for anyone who will be taking their abdomen boards. I studied from this book and passed my abdomen exam :). The cd that comes with the book is a great tool, it has detailed explaination of all the answers. And I love the "tips on how to take the exam" that they have on the first few pages. I give an A++ for this book. I will be using the same book for my OB/GYN boards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Abdminal Review Book
This book is an excellent resource for those reviewing the abdominal ultrasound subject for the exam. Also it gives great hints on how to answer the multiple choice answers, which are sometimes so tricky. I recommend it to all candidates out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars worth buying
This book is definitely worth buying. Explanations and pictures are very good. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Passed on first try!
I think this was a great book to use for my review.I in no way would say that using this book solely will guarantee a passing score but in combination with Davies Abdomen Review and Edelman's online X-zone questions I think you will be well on your way.I think the key to passing the abdomen exam is to test your knowledge with as many different questions as you possible can.In my own opinion, I thought the test was harder than I expected and again, because of the vast amount of information that there is to cover when it comes to the abdomen, I would recommend testing yourself with as many different types of questions as possible!

Overall this is a great start if your frustrated and don't know where to begin because the information is set up in sections, allowing you to concentrate on different parts at a time rather than all at once. The disk is also great if your one who can't stand the whole book thing and are more of a computer person!

1-0 out of 5 stars Book fell apart with in a few months:{
Our class bought this book in Jan 2010 and by May it was falling apart. I have many textbooks and this is the only one that has ever fallen apart so fast. Our class has to glue this book back together and will not be able to resell do to the condition.
There are SO many errors in this book and am still confused as to how it made it to college bookstores. The review questions and answers do not match and when they do, some give a incorrect answers. Pictures for the protocol were labeled incorrectly and I was advised that some of the organs protocol pictures were wrong; even for a "standard". Very disappointed in Mrs. Temkin (She used to run our highly respected sonography program in Florida). I feel we are owed our money back.

3-0 out of 5 stars Content great, binding? Not so much
I was excited to see an updated version of this essential textbook, and while I'm pleased with the content and find the protocol drawings and images very helpful, the binding on this book -- as mentioned by another reviewer -- is terrible. After less than a half-semester's use, the first 150 pages or so are completely loose and out of the book. I'd have been better off just pulling everything out and putting it in a three-hole binder. There are special textbook-quality bindings out there, and I'd gladly pay extra for it given that I'd like to hold onto this text for a few years but, sadly, it doesn't appear to be offered by Saunders/Elsevier in this case.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This book is fantastic.I am only starting out my studies as a sonographer and found this book very useful. It provides a concise summary of the general scanning principles & methods and for each region of the body broke it down into anatomy, physiology, sonographic appearance, patient position, transducer etc.Very good summary - detailed enough that you get the information required, but not overly wordy. It covers it all, very concisely.Well written & easy to understand. I found this book very handy and complimented my other texts book very well.I would highly recommend it to students and as a reference for qualified sonographers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatbook for sonographers! thanks
The book is a basik and almost only book to study sonography principals. it was in great condition. thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Great to have a clear concept of Ultrasound Physics
I found this book very understandable and easy in the sense that it describes most of the physical principles in detail and with equation which some other authors lack.Though it's not so easy to read at once or showing not only definations but also descriptions of topics which makes it more to understand instead of just memorizing the things and that is the most important thing I found in it

4-0 out of 5 stars An introductory textbook on medical ultrasound
I actually came across Professor Kremkau's textbook accidentally, when I was looking for some not too dated text on the physics of medical ultrasound. Although it was obviously aimed at a practicing ultrasonographer preparing for some ARDMS or ARRT exam rather than a physicist trying to brush up his knowledge of medical ultrasound, it proved to be a valuable source of relatively recent information on the current state of the area.

The textbook starts with an overview of the basic physics of waves and ultrasound, proceeds to the transducers and beam shape, and continues to the computer technology used for imaging. Next comes a chapter on the Doppler effect, being followed by a discussion on spectral analysis. A synthesis of these two techniques is the color Doppler imaging, and an entire chapter is devoted on the recent techniques like Color Doppler and Color Power Doppler. The textbook is concluded by a chapter discussing the artifacts, and finally a chapter on performance and safety.

The style is highly readable, although the text is somewhat repetitive. One striking observation - for a physicist at least - is that professor Kremkau denies the efforts spent in inventing a readable representation of mathematical relations over the past 500 years or so, and has invented his own system. So instead of the usual "wavelength equals propagation speed divided by frequency" written in mathematical symbols, we see frames like "frequency UP, wavelength DOWN" throughout the book. Strange, and probably not particularly efficient.

Each chapter is accompanied by a list of over 100 questions, and the answers are provided at the end of the book after the summary chapter. Each chapter also contains a small handy glossary. The book is lavishly illustrated and has a useful index, while the list of references is not particularly impressive. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pocket Protocols for Ultrasound Scanning, 2nd Edition Rating
Thisis a great book to have for referencing to study the organs of the human body. It has been a great help with helping me to get to know the familiarity of the organs and what good ultrasound pics are. I would recommend this to any Sonography student.

3-0 out of 5 stars decentbut not as much info as i wanted
i like the images, and it does help with annotation, but i wish the protocol was complete like in the betty bates tempkin actual hardbound book's original school edition...i feel like i paid more than for what i got....overal its ok and practical...also wished it was actually pocket size..bigger and wider than i expected.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
This book is a great reference, especially for students! It is completely thorough and one may quickly reference anything pertaining to imaging protocol. My only complaint would be that it doesn't show where to properly take measurements or place calipers.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome book
great book for all sonographers. Clear pictures, quick references. I highly recommend it to anyone, from students to experienced techs.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you have the first edition, there's no need to buy the second!
I liked the first edition, eventhough there were a lot of images that were repeated over and over again(I would give it 4 stars- there are no other books like this that shows all the protocols you need, so I'll give the author credit for that). I bought the new one only to find myself looking at an identical book. There were hardly any added images in the second edition and it's not worth getting. My advice, stick to the first edition if you already have it. Buy the second edition "only" if you don't have the first edition. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Straight to the point
This is an excellent book for the beginning to intermediate ED sonographer. Chapters are "straight to the point" and focus on simple need to know information. Most chapters can be read quickly... in 30 minutes or so and acts as an excellent review and reminder.

Images and pictures are perhaps not the greatests, but this is difficult to do in a textbook anyway... probably best to see live videos of ultrasounds as an adjunct to this text.

In summary: an excellent quick reference for the beginner to intermediate ED sonographer... well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Ultrasound Primer
This is the ideal guide for emergency and ICU ultrasound. The reasons why I can highly recommend this book:
* Beautiful diagrams combined with actual ultrasound images
* Length is digestible by busy physicians, but includes all the crucial points on each modality
* Fantastic procedural section, which allows you to utilize ultrasound to increase the success rate and safety of your procedures the same day you read the chapter.
* Layout is easy to use and aesthetically pleasing.
* Includes up-to-date evidence for each technique.

This text is ideal for both beginners and intermediate ultrasound practitioners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential resource for the full range of ED ultrasound applications
This book seems ideal for both beginners and more advanced users as well. The manual covers all the accepted and emerging uses of ultrasound - not just FAST, echocardiography, and line placement, but optic nerve sheath diameter, foreign body localization, DVT identification, and more.

Each color-coded topic features multiple high-quality images of normal and abnormal views, and anatomical illustrations to demonstrate proper probe positioning. The writing is straightforward, and equally suitable for "on the job" referencing or reviewing at leisure. The chapters include troubleshooting and pitfalls sections loaded with helpful imaging tips, and lit review tables to guide researchers, over and above the extensive bibliography.I also appreciated the helpful sample clinical protocols, included to guide physicians' decision-making for starting therapy, calling consults, or considering other imaging methods.

Altogether, this concise manual is packed with information to guide physicians at all levels of training through the full range of ED ultrasonography. Emergency and Critical Care Ultrasound ought to be part of every department's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Emergency Ultrasound Text
This is the best introductory text to emergency ultrasound that I've ever read.Like all introductory books, it starts with a brief, useful introduction to the physics of ultrasound concentrating on those aspects relevant to emergency applications. The book then moves to diagnostic and procedural uses of ultrasound in the ED.These sections go far beyond the traditional topics of the FAST exam and central line placement to include such varied applications as chest ultrasound, ocular US, foreign body removal, joint aspiration, lumbar puncture, etc.Further unlike other texts, this manual supports the text with quality anatomic diagrams along with sonographic images of both normal and abnormal examples. This method of demonstrating anatomy in conjunction with a normal sonographic image juxtaposed next to an abnormal image is extremely helpful and is sorely lacking in other books of this type.If you are looking for an excellent introduction to ED ultrasound, this is the book! ...
