Thunderbird Lounge
It is quite evident that Gen Brandt did considerable research into the events that took place during that time period.Some people might question the facts as presented about some of the operations or events, however, I think the book speaks for itself.The author did an outstanding job depicting how the Company functioned in that environment and how the officers and enlisted men endured the stress and strain of life away from home and family.The humorous side depicted in the book is probly as accurate as can be remembered and certainly contributed to the over all high moral of the organization.The book is well written and a pleasure to read.

Highly Readable, Accurate, Thorough Picture
Bob Brandt did a masterful job of saving, sorting and presenting data as well as remembering so many facts that most of us have long since forgotten.

The book is a keeper, and supports the efforts and brave acts of the many unsung participants at the outset of this strange venture of our country into a truly foreign land.

I swapped my book, OUTLAWS IN VIETNAM, for Bob's book at the VHPA reunion in Las Vegas, 2002.This is a great book by Gen. Brandt typifying the events and life-style experienced at this early moment in Vietnam. The H-21's are graphically described in all their quirks and needs, as well as the skillful men who had to fly them. I find the earliest years of VN helicopter warfare fascinating to read, as these men not only laid down the tracks for we later aviators to utilize in mid-sixties on, but they quickly found out the political reality of Vietnam--which never changed.As Halberstam has stated, "the war was lost in 1964, not at the end of its duration." Our aviator job was tremendously enjoyed by all of us, but the Washington administrations never totally got it what a fluky scenario Vietnam was.We helicopter pilots surely got it, though.

True Pioneers of Army Aviation
Pi'-o-neer' a noun meaning: "One who goes before, preparing the way, for others to follow."There is no other way to define the original members of the 33rd Transportation Company (Light Helicopter)(CH21), except as pioneers in U.S. Army Aviation history!All original members of the 33rd left their families in the U.S. and quietly departed Ft. Ord, CA with their destination as-"unknown"!The move was classified as Top Secret and no one was able to tell anyone, including families, where they were going under penalty of court-martial.Vietnam was not classified as a combat zone in 1962, but as an advisory zone...but no one told the VC.Thunderbird Lounge is a very good historical book written by a man who experienced it all. 1LT Robert J. Brandt, a National Guard officer newly assigned, became the Commander of the 573rd Maintenance Detachment and, would be the only Commander of the 573rd Maintenance Detachment for the entire year.

The 33rd was originally to deploy to "unknown" locations in March of 1962.The orders were delayed and many of their helicopters were transferred to two other Transportation Companies (8th and 57th), which did deploy.Then the U.S. was scoured for low time CH-21's to replace the ones given up by the 33rd.The unit was again alerted to move in August of 1962.All aircraft and all other equipment finally departed for Hawaii by ship scheduled to stop in Hawaii to pick up the aircraft and equipment of a sister unit, the 81st, before continuing on. Then, the day before the main body of personnel was to depart Travis AFB, 1LT Brandt was diagnosed with pneumonia!After spending a night in the Ft. Ord hospital and receiving a massive dose of penicillin that led to a rapid improvement, Brandt convinced the Army doctor that he HAD to go with his unit the next day.Convinced by his improvement, the doctor loaded Brandt up with more penicillin and off he went.He recovered enroute with no ill effects.

The arrival at Tan So Nhut and Saigon was exactly as anyone who has been there remembers...a sensory shock and memorable!The year was 1962 and, Saigon was "unspoiled" by western influences; full of interesting foreign sights, sounds and smells.The USNS Croatan, carrying 40 cocooned helicopters and equipment, arrived within 48 hours, on schedule.Following unpacking, unwrapping and assembly, the 33rd's20 CH-21s were flown to Tan So Nhut and ultimately to their new home on Bien Hoa airbase about 30 miles north of Saigon.The time was the monsoon season and no member of the unit had experienced the tropics or the problems the heat and moisture would ultimately bring to their aging CH-21 helicopters.The 33rd had arrived and "Wow", were the conditions primitive!

Throughout the remaining pages of Thunderbird Lounge, MG Brandt tells a complete story of the first year of the 33rd in Vietnam.People, places and incidents are described in very vivid detail.Almost every pilot is mentioned as well as many of the key enlisted men and NCO's.Using letters sent home to his wife along with the help of several comrades he is still in contact with,MG Brandt reconstructs many events that tell the story of their first year.Combat assaults, re-supply and medical evacuations are carried out in two aircraft flights because of engine and maintenance concerns.The red soil and extreme moisture conditions made maintenance of the CH-21 radial engines and wooden rotor blades very, very difficult.Brandt estimates that his engine shop rebuilt a CH-21 radial engine every 8 days!Thunderbird Lounge is a story of missions, maintenance and mayhem.

Never has a book been written after 40 years that is more complete with dates, names and locations.Every page is brimming with tales relating the many humorous incidents and events that made life in combat and the poor living conditions of Bien Hoa airbase bearable. Great photos are placed at the end of each chapter that compliment and highlight the people and incidents within the chapter. MG Brandt carefully remembers some of the sad events of the year, concluding with the loss of the first two 33rd pilots just after his returning home.

Thunderbird Lounge is truly a wonderful book.It tells a positive story about men as pioneers overcoming adversity, boredom and the enemy.Some of the participants may have seen things differently than MG Brandt, as he looks back after 40 years.However, no one can say he didn't tell it candidly, and fairly, as he saw it.After all, 40 years is a long time.1962 was truly a time when real men pioneered the use of helicopters in combat and developed the textbooks for US Army Aviation airmobile operations.Those textbooks, as well as the lessons learned, were effectively used by thousands of pilots over the next 9 years in that "unknown" location so very far away.

Any "little" firefighter will love this book
My 3 year old son who is obsessed with all things related to fire trucks LOVES this book. He loves the photos of REAL firetrucks. The book gives children a chance to read about fire trucks, parts of fire trucks, and the equipment carried in fire trucks.

Best "woo-woo" book ever!
My 2 yr old son is a lover of"woo-woo's", which is what he calls fire trucks. So this book was a must have after borrowing it from the library. It's a good sturdy book with pages full of images/photos of real fire related machines. Mediocre at best.
I took my initial EMT class with the Brady text... very in-depth and full of information (and about twice the size of this one).

This one seems to be very dummed down, with about 1/2 the info.Adequate for an EMT class, but it doesn't exceed the curricula in any area.

So, its average, and could use some padding.

Excellent Reference Manual
This is really a reference textbook for the education of new EMT's, butthe information it contains is complete, concise and extremely up-to-date(important in a field that is changing ALL the time!)

Highly recommendedas a text to have on your EMS shelf.

Good reference for the EMT
This text is traditionally seen in the classroom, however not all EMT classes utilize this text and some technicians may not be familiar with it.In essence, the text is designed to provide the necessary knowledge tobecome an Emergency Medical Technician.

Content includes basicphysiology, medical terminology, patient assessment, and emergencyinterventions on the basic life support level. The book assumes no priormedical knowledge on the part of the reader and the information ispresented in a clear and logical manner.

Great Book for the future of EMTs
I am an EMT Basic student and use this book very much. It is a very easily read book with a good amount of emphasis on the practical applications neccesary for emergency care. It is also divided for ease of refernce,which is neccessary for quick checks of how to do something.

Good Solutions
This book could be a bit technical for those with out a small physics and calculus background, but it does describe many of the difficulties that would need to be over come and lays out a plan as how to do it.It successfully answered many of the problems I had thought up when thinking of the space elevator and explained in detail how to overcome them.

THE book to read on the space elevator
Although it came out six years ago, Brad Edwards' book is still second to none. If you want to learn a lot about what a space elevator is, how it might be designed and built and what it will be used for, this book will give you all the details.

Apostrophe's Apostasy
This engineer's quite positive reaction to this technically impressive book is overshadowed by his own obsession with the mundane topics of spelling and punctuation.That's much more my own problem than it is the author's.But for any of my fellow obsessives out there who consider taking on this book, I must warn you, there's hardly a page where you won't find yourself grinding your teeth over the lack of respect for the standards of our language.Unfortunately for us apostrophe freaks, that can lead to an irrational lack of confidence in the logic and mathematics of the content.

Otherwise, this is a very interesting and complete presentation of an important approach to escaping our planet.

Fascinating


Now we have seen the failure of the shuttle it is time we had a look at some alternatives. What we have here is a first-class study of a `Space Elevator'. If such an elevator could be built it would revolutionize space travel.

Written in easy style and does not need much technical skill to read. The writers here have done a good job here.

If the figures quoted are correct such a scheme would be about 6 to 10 billion dollars. In today's world this is not that much money. Overall it sounds too good to be true. I am sure that we could add a few more zeros as everything in space is more expensive then quoted. Still it does show the project might be possible and affordable if it can work something I am not qualified to say that it does depend on materials that we don't have yet.

I think the writers have proven their point that it is within reach of current technology and we should do a more detailed study on this topic.

Out-of-the-Box Thinking
Brad Edwards' book serves as 'the manifesto' for those interested in radical thinking for space access. It is a delightful read on the challenges and effort to make a space elevator a reality. The spin-off technologies will be wonderfully useful in the years ahead. I am pleased to see that NASA's Centennial Challenge named SpaceFoward and the space elevator competition its first challenge. Nonetheless, the first competition made little progress. Yet I suspect that the second year efforts will make for better competition to 'beat the house.' Go Virginia Tech Space Elevator Team! ... Graduate Textbook
This is basically a collection of academic research and research methods geared towards a graduate-level class in aviation human factors.It is what it is, of interest to those involved in higher level coursework in the aviation field.

The good, the bad and the ugly
One problem with the book is that, while it has a 1999 publication date, the great majority of the articles were written about 1993-1995. This fact made the book about 6 years out-of-date as soon as it was published...and, in the aviation HF arena of the late 1990's-early 2000's, this is a crucial flaw. Why? Besides the obvious, this period in aviation HF was one of both great strides and great re-considerations/re-evaluations of previously accepted aviation HF dogmas. As one example, CRM which had been heavily promoted for 20+ years by FAA and the airline industry as the silver bullet in human error accident/incident reduction was finally scrutinized and found wanting as to lack of evalative methods, among other flaws, and replaced by risk assessment/management, while as reinforcing the command/leadership role of the pilot.
The book is not so much poorly organized as lacking a overarching and integrative rationale for the topic areas.
The good? There is a new edition in the works and, if the publishers do not waste another 5 years getting it to the public, it will be up-to-date. However, I believe that it will use, basically, many of the same topics/authors, simply up-dated. One good thing is that the chapter on Civil Aviation Security will be 90% new, because of 9/11 and what has happened since.

Longwinded And Poorly Organized
I used this book in a graduate Human Factors course, and while I disliked it at first, I slowly grew to hate it. I give it two stars because it does, on occasion, contain good information, but more often than not is disjointed, poorly organized, and unfocused.

The book is essentially a collection of academic papers related to Human Factors in aviation (some are moderately tangential to the subject matter at hand), and as such it is really better suited for use as a reference book than as a text. It is further limited as a text by virtue of the fact that because most of the articles are extremely specialized, giant chunks of Human Factors considerations are left totally unaddressed.

I particularly disliked the contribution from Daniel E. Maurino, entitled "Crew Resource Management: A Time For Reflection." There are much better resources available on CRM (and now Threat and Error Management as well.) On the other end of the quality spectrum, the article by Giovanni Costa titled "Fatigue and Biological Rhythms" is an excellent account of the effects of fatigue on human performance, and emphasizes the importance of circadian desynchronosis in aviation safety. Most of the articles range between these two in quality, but these two stand out for me as the defining ends of the spectrum.

This book is valuable as a reference tool and for some very specialized pieces of knowledge. It is unsuitable for a survey course in Human Factors at any level, and an attempt to read it as a text is torturous at best. Combine the unsuitability as a text with the usurious price of $145.00 and this is one of the worst values around.

Want to be a certified EMT-Basic? This is the book you will have to eat through.

The chapters are very long and WORDY. Important information is scattered between needless sentences such that, yes, you will have to read everything. The text in this book could very easily be condensed to a quarter of it's current size.

There is more information in a paragraph from my pChem text book than from two pages of this. Also, the protocols could be better organized. ... Read more

Excellent Book for Graduate Studies
I really liked learning the fundamentals of Traffic Engineering from this book. I think that the book is extremely useful, and a must-have for all traffic engineering graduate students. The reason I think the book might not be as suitable for undergraduate students, is that Daganazo depends on a lot of mathematics and systems knowledge, which I think most undergraduate students might not have. Personally, I am a graduate students, and I had to do some extra work to understand a couple of ideas presented by Daganzo. ... Read more

Instead of Transportation Systems Security, which Ibought previously, I should have settled for this book, I realize that now. Transportation Security by Clifford Bragdon has all the stuff that I was looking for in Transportation Systems Security. Where that book fails, this book succeeds. Why? Because this book, unlikethe other mentioned, gives a holistic view of our world's transportation security processes and operations, in all modes (except rail), and all issues that relate to security in transportation. Although at times heavily US and homeland security oriented, this book still manages to capture me, the international audience, to the full.
