Editorial Review Product Description Forensic professionals, often working through heavy caseloads, require quick and easy access to reliable sources of information to help interpret toxicology results. While several in-depth resources are available, they are often large, cumbersome, and contain more information than is needed. The Handbook of Forensic Toxicology for Medical Examiners is a concise handbook referencing the most common toxic substances and their levels of toxicity, making it an ideal text for quick confirmation in the field or in the lab. The book begins by explaining the proper selection and submission of specimens for toxicological analysis. It describes the various types of specimens and identifies the cases for which these specimens would be most useful, providing instruction on proper collection. The author then explains the methodology involved in performing the specific tests. Nearly 300 Toxic Substances Discussed The main section of the text consists of an alphabetical listing of nearly 300 toxic substances, including drugs of abuse, poisons, prescription drugs, and over-the-counter medications. For each entry, the book provides the common brand names; classification; half life; volume of distribution; usual dosage; tables of toxicity in various samples, including blood, urine, and tissues; and other important information based on the extensive experience of the author. The text is heavily referenced with materials that are useful for preparation of courtroom testimony, and it contains supplemental appendices with information on acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, drugs that prolong the QT interval, pharmacogenetics, normal laboratory values, and conversion charts. Convenient Format The busy forensic professional needs a concise handbook that provides critical information quickly without the need to wade through extraneous and inconsequential material. This volume offers an easy-to-use format that allows quick access to the most pertinent information, saving time and increasing accuracy. Customer Reviews (2)

Editorial Review Product Description After providing some background information the book covers aspects of sample collection, transport, storage and disposal, and sample preparation. Analytical techniques - colour tests and spectrophotometry, chromatography and electrophoresis, mass spectrometry, and immunoassay – are covered in depth, and a chapter is devoted to the analysis of trace elements and toxic metals. General aspects of method implementation/validation and laboratory operation are detailed, as is the role of the toxicology laboratory in validating and monitoring the performance of point of care testing (POCT) devices. The book concludes with reviews of xenobiotic absorption, distribution and metabolism, pharmacokinetics, and general aspects of the interpretation of analytical toxicology results. Written by an experienced team of authors,Fundamentals of Analytical Toxicology is an invaluable resource for those starting out in a career in analytical toxicology across a wide range of disciplines including clinical and forensic science, food safety, and pharmaceutical development. Praise from the reviews: “This is an ambitious effort to describe in detail the many and varied aspects of the science of toxicological analysis. The 17 chapters cover every foreseeable aspect, from specimen collection through analytical techniques and quality control to pharmacological principles and interpretation of results. The authors bring together a great deal of experience in the field and have succeeded admirably in achieving their goal: "to give principles and practical information on the analysis of drugs, poisons and other relevant analytes in biological specimens...". The book is very readable and quite up-to-date, and contains many illustrative figures, charts and tables. Both the student and the practicing professional would do well to study this material carefully, as there is something here for every conceivable level of interest.” Review from Randall Baselt "This text comes highly recommended for any analytical toxicology trainee." The Bulletin of the Royal College of Pathologists “Overall, this book provides a comprehensive, thorough, clear, up to date and practical treatment of analytical toxicology at a high standard. Understanding of the text is enhanced by the use of many illustrations. Specifications, guidelines, and methods are highlighted in grey background “Boxes”. The many and up to date literature references in each chapter demonstrate the authors’ thorough work and permit easy access to deeper information. Therefore this book can be highly recommended as a valuable source of knowledge in analytical toxicology both as an introduction and for the advanced reader.” GTFCh Bulletin “Toxichem + Krimtech”, May 2008 (translated, original review in German) “Many toxicologists will add this important reference to their libraries because it competently fills a need ...” International Journal of Toxicology “The book is very well illustrated, easy to understand and pleasant to read, and contains a wealth of dedicated information.” International Journal of Environmental Analytical Chemistry |

Outstanding tribute to the original Ellenhorn The book provides excellent detail needed for the understanding of a wide range of toxicologic problems.Treatment recommendations are as evidence-based as possible given the field of study. The third section of the book focuses on one of the key elements of being a toxicologist:detective! The section is titled, "Diagnosis of the Poisoned Patient: The Toxicolgist as Sleuth".Rarely do patients present with a (accurate) diagnosis. It's the job of the clinician to take all the available information, work through the possibilities, and identify the most likely agents that could be causing the observed effects. This is an outstanding resource and should be considered for critical care and emergency clinicians as well as poison center staff (especially those still in training in these areas).Given the popularity of TV and movie scripts that include toxicologic information (e.g., CSI, ER, etc.) those writers would do well to review this text. ... Editorial Review Product Description The book goes on to make the case for a range of species not commonly used for safety assessment studies but which may provide useful alternative models for some specific endpoints. The chapter authors discuss special considerations regarding the evaluation and interpretation of the clinical pathology of the eight major model species as well as how to select a model species and how to extrapolate the results to humans. They detail potential pitfalls and situations that cause either human or model to be significantly more sensitive than the other or totally irrelevant to each other. The book concludes with an overview of the increasingly complex laws and regulations that govern how laboratory animals are obtained, maintained, and utilized, and an appendix that provides a quick guide to commercial sources of laboratory animals.
