Product Description
We who live with dogs know that thunderstorms and fireworks can stress some animals to the point of panic. Noise fears are common, frustrating, and can be difficult to treat. This book is for those who have tried desensitizing and counter classical conditioning with little or no success; for those who want facilitators to make a desensitizing and counter classical conditioning program more successful; or for those who do not wish to pursue a Pavlovian approach and would like to explore alternatives. ... I think this book is well written and has lots of good ideas.I would have given it 5 stars if it would have helped my dog cope with thunderstorms- but I think ours is a particularly difficult case.Nevertheless, I would recommend this book because I think it does cover all the bases for helping your dog cope.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Big Bang! How You Can Help Your Dog Cope with Thunderstorms & Fireworks
This booklet is very good on how to help dogs with noise-related fears, especially thunder phobias. It gives very good suggestions that can help take training & behavioral work a step further in addition to desentization & counter-conditioning that most trainers commonly already use. This booklet is easy to read & understand. I would recommend it for those that have dogs with this issue.(For more info on counter-conditioning & desenstization in an easy booklet, THE CAUTIOUS CANINE, How to Help Dogs Conquer Their Fears.) ... This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A167043. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: On April 29, 1996, lightning struck the airfield at Hurlburt Field,FL, killing one Airmen and injuring ten others. This cloud to ground lightningstrike hit eight minutes after a lightning advisory was canceled. At the time of the strike, thunderstorms were observed 7 to 10 miles north and south of theairfield. The incident raised questions about Air Force Weather Agency'slightning criteria. Soon after the incident, a Lightning Safety Review Panel was assembled to determine the adequacy of lightning advisories. One of thequestions posed to the panel was could an incident like Hurlburt happen again? The review panel could not answer that question due to the lack of documentedresearch on how far lightning can travel horizontally before striking theground. This thesis used the WSR-88D Algorithm Testing and Display System(WATADS) and the default parameters of the WATADS's Storm Cell Identificationand Tracking (SCIT) Algorithm to identify thunderstorm centroids. Lightningstrike data containing nearly 50,000 cloud to ground strikes was obtainedthrough the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). Horizontal distances were then computed between these storm centroids and cloud to ground lightning strikes. This research discovered that average distances between thunderstorm centroidsand lightning strikes vary with season and location. In addition, nearly 75% ofall lightning strikes occurred within 10 nautical miles of thunderstormcentroids. ... Read more

It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A414163. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: During the period Jun-Aug 96, four Air Force installations sufferedover $4.8 million in damage from convective winds. During the same summer, AirForce Space Command units issued nearly 65% of their weather warnings forconvective winds, making the forecasting of convective winds the most frequentchallenge to forecasters. This thesis seeks to assist Air Force forecasters atPeterson Air Force Base (PAFB), Colorado, in forecasting airmass thunderstormdowndraft wind speeds using the Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D). To accomplish this purpose, several existing potential downdraft windspeed prediction techniques were evaluated against the observed wind speeds ofnineteen airmass thunderstorms. The nineteen airmass thunderstorms studiedaccounted for all airmass thunderstorms occurring within 10.5 run of PAFB from 1 Apr-30 Sep 96 and 1 Apr-30 Sep 97 and for which archived WSR-88D data wasavailable. The results of the evaluations suggested the prediction techniques in operational use are not accurate m forecasting downdraft wind speeds at PAFB.Moreover, it was discovered during this research that the technique developed by the Air Force's Air Weather Service (AWS) to predict wind gust potential has noscientific basis and its use by Air Force forecasters should be discontinued. Astatistical analysis of these prediction techniques using WSR- 88D datacollected from the airmass thunderstorms provided no accurate means by which tostatistically modily these techniques for application at PAFB. ... It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A658043. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Microbursts are intense downbursts from thunderstorms that affect anarea less than 4 km and have a lifespan less than 10 minutes. Wet microburstsare associated with heavy precipitation and are common in the eastern andsoutheastern part of the country. The greatest threat from microbursts is to low flying aircraft, where the rapid fluctuations in horizontal and vertical airflow create tremendous shear zones. Microbursts have been determined to be the causal factor behind at least three major aircraft accidents resulting in numerousfatalities. Due to the short lifespan of microbursts, they often strike withoutwarning and pose a serious challenge to operational forecasters trying toprotect Air Force assets. This thesis seeks to develop a technique to forecastwet microbursts using currently operational technology, including upper airsoundings and WSR-88D products. The technique developed is comprised of threedistinct phases. First, recognize the potential threat for given environmentalconditions. Second, predict the maximum outflow velocities from microburstsusing predictive equations. Third, highlight key NEXRAD radar products thatdemonstrate a strong potential to serve as precursors to microburst formation.Using the technique developed, warning leadtimes on the order of 10 to 20minutes appear to be reasonable in operational applications. ... It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A675293. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Air Force operations are directly impacted by weather on a daily basis. Erroneous forecasts negatively impact mission readiness and consequently cost the government time, in terms of wasted man-hours, and money. Advanced forecast lead-time could make a difference to minimize loss to both USAF personnel and assets. This study examined lightning data from 64 storm events from 1995-2000 in search of unique lightning signatures indicative of tornadic activity. Overall flash rates, percentage of positive flashes, positive and negative peak currents and multiplicity for each case were separated into two categories based on tornado intensity and season of occurrence. Based on the research results, there is little evidence to support the theory that specific lightning trends emerge prior to tornadogenesis. Due to the inconsistent and unreliable nature of the results, exclusive use of this time-series technique is not recommended for use in operational forecasting. The use of conventional methods, such as radar and/or satellite, used in conjunction with cloud-to- ground lightning flash data may, however, provide insight as to how electrical and physical changes relate to the development of tornadoes within a storm. Intracloud lightning may also provide additional information on tornado development and should be included in future research projects. ... Read more

Excerpt: Romance of the West Chamber (simplified Chinese: ; traditional Chinese: ; pinyin: xxingjì; Record of the Western Chamber) is one of the most famous Chinese dramatic works. It was written by the Yuan Dynasty playwright Wang Shifu (ca 1260-1336), and set during the Tang Dynasty. It is a story of young lovers consummating their love without parental approval, and has been called "China's most popular love comedy" and a "lover's bible". At the same time, some have called it potentially dangerous, as there are stories of readers pining away under its influence. A pair of ivory fans depicting scenes from Romance of the West Chamber in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. The play is composed of twenty-one acts in five parts. It tells the story of a secret love affair between Zhang Sheng, a young scholar, and Cui Yingying, the daughter of a chief minister of the Tang court. The two first meet in a Buddhist monastery. Yingying and her mother have stopped there to rest while escorting the coffin of Yingying's father to their native town. Zhang Sheng falls in love with her immediately, but is prevented from expressing his feelings while Yingying is under her mother's watchful eye. The most he can do is express his love in a poem read aloud behind the wall of the courtyard in which Yingying is lodging. However, word of Yingying's beauty soon reaches Sun the Flying Tiger, a local bandit. He dispatches ruffians to surround the monastery, in the hopes of taking her as his consort. The Storming Media report number is A324163. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis creates a new algorithm to replace the Neumann-PfefferThunderstorm Index (NPTI). The 45th Weather Squadron at Patrick AFB, Florida, uses the NPTI as an objective means of determining the probability of thunderstorm occurrence at Cape Canaveral. The probability is used for missionplanning and resource protection, and increasing the accuracy of NPTI canpotentially save billions of dollars for the United States space program.Stratified logistical regressions are performed and probability equations arederived for May through September using upper air data and surface observationsfor Cape Canaveral. A logistical regression of NPTI was also performed.Variables include combinations of the climatological frequency of thunderstorms, the conditional probability of thunderstorms, the u and v components of the 850- mb, 700-mb, and 600-mb winds, the 800-mb to 600-mb mean relative humidity, the K index, and the Thompson index. The two resulting algorithms are compared to NPTI and persistence, and are evaluated based on their ability to forecast thunderstorms correctly. The primary performance metrics used to evaluate thealgorithms are hit rate, threat score, probability of detection, false alarmrate, Brier skill score, and ratio skill score. The investigation resultsindicate that the new algorithms are suitable for use by the 45th WeatherSquadron and are an improvement on NPTI. ... Read more
