3-0 out of 5 stars Leading edge overview of conventional environmental economics
The authors of this book worked hard to bring together various threads of research and investigation around environmental economics. Unfortunately the environment of neo liberal economics they use as a vantage point is not transformed and the book fails to make significant changes to the status quo. While not disparaging its value and contribution I would recommend readers consider reading books on ecological economics, a field which makes a more fundamental analysis of the of the relationship of economics and the environment. As for the nature of sustainable development the social inequality dimension can perhaps best be explained by authors like Naom Chomsky and Vandana Shiva.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sustainable Solutions!
This is an excellently timed book. Issues related to the environment make regular appearances today in the news, in novels, even in children's movies. Yet so often the focus remains on the specific problems we're facing, such as global warming or the death of the oceans, with less attention paid to the very real need for solutions. Economics Development and Environmental Stability does an excellent job of redressing that gap.

It is worth noting that this book gives equal weight to the environmental issues that come along both with economic growth, and in the absence of it. Economic development is therefore faced with two interrelated problems: how do successful countries continue to grow without also continuing to harm the environment, and how can developing countries grow in a healthier, more sustainable fashion than the industrialized world did. Economic Development and Environmental Stability points out the important role government has played in the creation of these problems, and the just as important role it must play in working towards their solution.

Starting with a general overview of the economic and environmental issues to be addressed, this book goes on to address specific environmental issues such as clean water, clean air, and energy. It offers solid economic analysis, and shows clearly where governments can and should step in to redress market failures. The book is clearly written and well edited, presenting a number of papers which taken together offer a broad picture of the interaction between economic development and the environment. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone who, having heard all the bad news, is looking for solutions.

Product Description

Coined in the 1970s, the term sustainable development and the ideas behind it have enjoyed varying amounts of popularity over the years. And while dire predictions abound, the full impacts of global warming are not known, nor can they be known. What we do know is that to be sustainable, all societies must adjust to new realities, which include changing ecosystems and natural limits to growth. How do we address these issues and maintain an equitable way of life for all on the planet?

Exploring the human-related aspects of sustainable development, Sustainable Development: Principles, Frameworks, and Case Studies emphasizes the need to move away from an unwanted circumstance by being systemic in our thinking instead of symptomatic. The authors argue that we cannot move away from an unwanted, negative circumstance, unless we can move toward a desired, positive outcome. The text summarizes positive approaches and presents strong theoretical and historical concepts along with salient case examples that illustrate the desired outcome of each model or framework discussed.

Often ensnared in thorny political ideology, the sustainable development issue also suffers from a deep and multidimensional nature that can be intimidating. This book offers, in one volume, a broad discussion of important frameworks pertaining to sustainable development. Based on the expertise of distinguished practitioners and scholars, the book’s content includes diverse and interrelated subjects drawn from a wide range of geographical areas. It offers techniques for evaluating and applying the basic principles of sustainable development and participatory project planning to achieve economic and environmental goals.

Product Description
Achieving urban sustainability is amongst the most pressing issues facing planners and governments and ensuring that new urban development reaches the highest sustainability standards is a major component within urban sustainability. While achieving urban sustainability is partially technical, the major challenges are to be found in the realm of urban governance and this book is the first to provide a cohesive analysis of urban governance and what is required to achieve sustainable development in urban areas.

The core focus of the book is the decarbonization of urban development, exemplified by the UK government's commitment that new residential development achieve zero-carbon by 2016 and all development be zero-carbon by 2019. There is a pressing need to understand how this ambitious agenda can be delivered and how it fits within the broader goal of sustainable development and commitments to social and economic advancement. To this end the book considers climate change mitigation and adaptation, together with other dimensions of environmental sustainability, and then connects this to the social and economic dimensions of urban development, looking across the scales of the individual building, the development site, the urban area, the urban region and the infrastructure network.

In particular the book looks at how sustainable urban development can be delivered on the ground through a comprehensive analysis of governance concerning new urban development. The book considers how a variety of policy tools could influence markets and governance processes to promote urban sustainability. It provides an innovative conceptual emphasis on how learning within planning processes and market structures is essential to achieve sustainable urban development. While making a contribution to urban governance theory with this learning perspective, the book is above all concerned with demonstrating how sustainable urban development can be delivered in practice. In doing so it draws on a mixture of reviews of existing research, policy and literature together with original research focussing on London, as well as examples drawn from Europe, Australia and the USA.

This is essential reading for students, academics and professionals in planning, urban design and architecture world-wide working to achieve sustainability. ... Read more

Product Description
In an era of globalization, international trade is a fact of life. The increasing conflicts surrounding negotiations on trade liberalization -- from the WTO debacle at Seattle in 1999 to the explosive events surrounding the meeting of the GB in Genoa in 2001 -- illustrate the breadth and depth of concern among governments, academics, activists and civil society. The disputes focus on the potential impacts of an unfettered global market place on jobs, social cohesion and the environment.

A growing, but disparate, literature has emerged to debate these questions, and "The Earthscan Reader on International Trade and Sustainable Development" provides an excellent sourcebook that consolidates the lessons learned thus far to guide academics, practitioners, activists and the concerned public in the next decade of work on these issues. ... Product Description
`This book offers valuable analysis, insights and pragmatic guidelines from a group of leading researchers who have ample experience with sustainability indicators and their use in applied economic models. It is an important contribution to the growing literature on making development more sustainable, and nicely complements recent work on the sustainomics framework that focuses on balancing the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.'
- Mohan Munasinghe, University of Manchester, UK, Munasinghe Institute for Development (MIND), Sri Lanka and Co-winner, 2007 Nobel Prize for Peace (Vice Chair, IPCC-AR4)

This insightful book explores the issue of sustainable development in its more operative and applied sense. Although a great deal of research has addressed potential interpretations and definitions of sustainable development, much of this work is too abstract to offer policy-makers and researchers the feasible and effective guidelines they require. This book redresses the balance.

The authors highlight how various indicators and aggregate measures can be included in models that are used for decision-making support and sustainability assessment. They also demonstrate the importance of identifying practical means to assess whether policy proposals, specific decisions or targeted scenarios are sustainable.

With discussions of basic concepts relevant to understanding applied sustainability analysis, such as definitions of costs and revenue recycling, this book provides policy-makers, researchers and graduate students with feasible and effective principles for measuring sustainable development. ... Product Description

The concept of sustainability lies at the core of the challenge of environment and development and the way governments, business and environmental groups respond to it. Green Development provides a clear and coherent analysis of sustainable development in both theory and practice.

This third edition retains the clear and powerful argument of previous editions, but has been updated to reflect advances in ideas and changes in international policy. Greater attention has been given to political ecology, environmental risk and the environmental impacts of development.

This fully revised third edition discusses:

  • the origins of thinking about sustainability and sustainable development and its evolution to the present day
  • the ideas that dominate mainstream sustainable development (ecological modernization, market environmentalism and environmental economics)
  • the nature and diversity of alternative ideas about sustainability that challenge ‘business as usual’ thinking (for example ecosocialism, ecofeminism, deep ecology and political ecology)
  • the dilemmas of sustainability in the context of dryland degradation, deforestation, biodiversity conservation, dam construction and urban and industrial development
  • the nature of policy choices about the environment and development strategies and between reformist and radical responses to the contemporary global dilemmas.

Green Development offers clear insights into the challenges of environmental sustainability and social and economic development. It is unique in offering a synthesis of theoretical ideas on sustainability and in its coverage of the extensive literature on the environment and development around the world.

This book has proved its value to generations of students as an authoritative, thought-provoking and readable guide to the field of sustainable development.

Product Description

Recent developments and interventions in the field of sustainable development have made this revised and updated third edition of An Introduction to Sustainable Development particularly timely as the world rises to the challenge of determining the prospects of sustainable development in the future. The book evaluates the progress made in the last decades of the twentieth century towards establishing new patterns and processes of development which are sustainable; in terms of the demands they make on the world's physical, ecological and cultural resources of the globe, and the characteristics of technology, societal organization and economic production which underpin them. The focus of the book is in the developing world where conditions such as rising poverty and mounting debt combine to present particular challenges of sustainability. The resolution of these issues is seen to depend on changes that include the operation of international institutions, the activities of government and private sector interests, as well as changes in the behavior of community organizations and individuals across the globe. Containing a wealth of student-friendly features including boxed case studies drawn from across the world, discussion questions, guides for further reading and a glossary, this text provides an invaluable introduction to the characteristics, challenges and opportunities of sustainable development.

Product Description
In recent years, sustainable development has emerged as a central goal of the World Bank and grassroots activists alike. In Grassroots Struggles for Sustainability in Central America, Lynn R. Horton explores the implications of this new, often contested discourse and related policies for Central America's rural and indigenous poor. Drawing on the testimony of leaders and residents of three communities in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama, Horton explores grassroots assumptions, values, and practices of sustainable development and, in particular, the ways in which they overlap with or challenge international financial institutions' discourse of sustainability.

With a comparative, empirical approach, Horton also analyzes dominant practices linked to sustainable development--neoliberal reforms, project interventions, and environmental protection. She reveals how these practices support or undermine economic, cultural, and political opportunities for the rural and indigenous poor and impact these communities' advancement of their own visions of sustainability. Finally, the author explores processes of empowerment that enable communities to articulate and put into practice local visions of sustainability, which contribute toward broader social and structural transformations.

Grassroots Struggles for Sustainability in Central America will interest sociologists, anthropologists, and others who study the theory and practice of sustainable development. ... Read more

Product Description

Perpetual economic growth is physically impossible on a planet with finite resources. Many concerned with humanity's future have focused on the concept of "sustainable development" as an alternative, as they seek means of achieving current economic and social goals without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own goals. Sustainable development brings together elements of economics, public policy, sociology, ecology, resource management, and other related areas, and while the term has become quite popular, it is rarely defined, and even less often is it understood.

A Survey of Sustainable Development addresses that problem by bringing together in a single volume the most important works on sustainable human and economic development. It offers a broad overview of the subject, and gives the reader a quick and thorough guide to this highly diffuse topic. The volume offers ten sections on topics including:

  • economic and social dimensions of sustainable development
  • the North/South balance
  • population and the demographic transition
  • agriculture and renewable resources
  • energy and materials use
  • globalization and corporate responsibility
  • local and national strategies

Each section is introduced with an essay by one of the volume editors that provides an overview of the subject and a summary of the mainstream literature, followed by two- to three-page abstracts of the most important articles or book chapters on the topic.

A Survey of Sustainable Development is the sixth and final volume in the Frontier Issues of Economic Thought series produced by the Global Development And Environment Institute at Tufts University. Each book brings together the most important articles and book chapters in a "frontier" area of economics where important new work is being done but has not yet been incorporated into the mainstream of economic study. The book is an essential reference for students and scholars concerned with economics, environmental studies, public policy and administration, international development, and a broad range of related fields. ... It illustrates the methodology with empirical case studies that are practical and policy-relevant over a wide range of time and geographic scales, countries, sectors, ecosystems and circumstances.
