5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Structural Engineers
This book is a must have for any structural engineer who does any type of seismic design. It's basically the encyclopedia of earthquake engineering. Some chapters are much better than others, and there is some overlap. However, this is still the number one reference for a broad range of earthquake related topics. Keep in mind it is not a cook book on how to design for seismic, but there are some design examples. Some of the best and most recent research in the subject at schools like U.C.San Diego and U.C.Berkeley is presented. Cant beat it... ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This manual for civil and structural engineers aims to simplify as much as possible a complex subject which is often treated too theoretically, by explaining in a practical way how to provide uncomplicated, buildable and economical foundations.

It explains simply, clearly and with numerous worked examples how economic foundation design is achieved. It deals with both straightforward and difficult sites, following the process through site investigation, foundation selection and, finally, design.

The book:

  • includes chapters on many aspects of foundation engineering that most other books avoid including

    • filled and contaminated sites
    • mining and other man-made conditions

  • features a step-by-step procedure for the design of lightweight and flexible rafts, to fill the gap in guidance in this much neglected, yet extremely economical foundation solution
  • concentrates on foundations for building structures rather than the larger civil engineering foundations
  • includes many innovative and economic solutions developed and used by the authors’ practice but not often covered in other publications
  • provides an extensive series of appendices as a valuable reference source.

For the Second Edition the chapter on contaminated and derelict sites has been updated to take account of the latest guidelines on the subject, including BS 10175. Elsewhere, throughout the book, references have been updated to take account of the latest technical publications and relevant British Standards. ... Read more

Product Description
This Fifth Edition of Structural Dynamics: Theory andComputation is the complete and comprehensive text in the field. Itpresents modern methods of analysis and techniques adaptable tocomputer programming clearly and easily. The book is ideal as a textfor advanced undergraduates or graduate students taking a first coursein structural dynamics. It is arranged in such a way that it can beused for a one- or two-semester course, or span the undergraduate andgraduate levels. In addition, this text will serve the practicingengineer as a primary reference. The text differs from the standard approach of other presentations inwhich topics are ordered by their mathematical complexity. This textis organized by the type of structural modeling. The author simplifiesthe subject by presenting a single degree-of-freedom system in thefirst chapters, then moves to systems with many degrees-of-freedom inthe following chapters. Finally, the text moves to applications of thefirst chapters and special topics in structural dynamics. New in this Edition:+ Problems reworked for SAP2000 TM. + Step-by-step examplesof how to use SAP2000 TM for every application of structuraldynamics, + Inclusion of a CD-ROM with three learning aids:SAP2000 TM student version; source code for the author's educationalprograms in structural dynamics, so that the results of changedparameters can be seen step-by-step; and the compiler (executablefiles) for the author's educational programs. + Three earthquakeengineering chapters updated to the latest ICC TM building codes. + Material rearranged so that theory and dynamic analysis precedeapplications and special topics, facilitating using the booksequentially. + Complete introductions provided to advanced topicsas foundation for further study. This text is essential for civil engineering students. 2-0 out of 5 stars The Figures are horrible
I used to read the Structural Dynamics (3rd ed.) from my university library. It was a great book with all explanation very clear and good examples.
Then a had the opportunity to buy the 5th edition. The text is a little different, but it is not a problem. The big problem is the figures that are horribles. It seems that all figures were scanned in low resolution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review
This book is wonderfull. I am a beginner in the subject. The book is easy to understand and gives an excellent "feel" for the subject. I read Chopra before and many times I had to reread to folow the "red line" and not get lost in "research" like proofs. Chopra is good too, but after this book to get a little further.
The programs are a real bonus to practice, and to see the programmingsteps clarifies the matter even more.
I can't belive there are people commenting on the "look" when the "content" is so good. I thank the author for saving me from frustration and writing the book as for "self study".

4-0 out of 5 stars stresses numerical solving
[A review of the 5th Edition 2006.]

Paz gives a comprehensive explanation of his subject. Suitable to a reader at perhaps the second or third undergraduate year, and who has had some calculus and linear algebra. A substantial portion of the text involves solving linear systems of equations, to find eigenvalues and eigenvectors. And for this, the maths background is essential.

What distinguishes the book from many older texts is the intensive use of computers to solve equations. This permits the tackling of harder problems, that are amenable only to numerical solutions.

Also, if you already use some other numerical package, like Maple or Mathematica, then you can ignore the binaries on the enclosed CD, and just recode.

5-0 out of 5 stars excelent book to understand the concept
This is an excellent book for beginners but doesn't have too much detail on the math part I believe. Still great book to understand the concept.

3-0 out of 5 stars low quality pictures
The material is well structured and the book is written in a clear and concise manner that's why I give five stars to the author. But I am really disappointed because I do believe that is unacceptable nowadays to allow for printing a book with such a poor quality of sketches/pictures. I think that most of them are scanned from previous material, and unfortunately it turned out that the scanning equipment was too sophisticated for author's assistants. So, I rate the publisher with just one star! - Please note that my comment refers to the fifth edition. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This book needs a proofreader!
Do not use this book without an Engineering or Architecture professor to help you through the errors within. The book is full of errors of continuity, strange/bad math, and inconsistency. The errors are so numerous, that it makes you wonder if you can trust any of the formulas to be accurate. For example: a sample problem in beam design gives the formula to use (from a table), defines the variables, gives the values for the known variables; and then in the problem-solving steps, uses different values for the known variables than what was listed in the preceding "Given" section!Furthermore, the answer arrived at cannot be made by the equation provided! There are also errors where a formula is listed in tables and that formula is referred to later and used for a problem, but the formula is not exactly the same as the table; there is no explanation for the difference.
I recommend "Simplified Engineering for Architects and Builders" (Ambrose/Tierney), instead. ... Read more

Product Description
Structural Dynamics in Aeronautical Engineering is a comprehensive introduction to the modern methods of dynamic analysis of aeronautical structures. The text is particularly suitable for undergraduate students. For advanced students, the text provides numerous references on seminal work on structural dynamics that can be used for graduate level research.

The text represents carefully developed course materials, beginning with an introductory chapter on matrix algebra and methods for numerical computations, followed by a series of chapters discussing specific aeronautical applications. In this way, the student can be guided from the simple concept of a single-degree-of-freedom structural system to the more complex multidegree-of-freedom and continuous systems, including random vibrations, nonlinear systems, and aeroelastic phenomena. Among the various examples used in the text, the chapter on aeroelasticity of flight vehicles is particularly noteworthy with its clear presentation of the phenomena and its mathematical formulation for structural and aerodynamic loads. ... Product Description
Forensic Engineering Investigation is a compendium of the investigative methodologies used by engineers and scientific investigators to evaluate some of the more common types of failures and catastrophic events. In essence, the book provides analyses and methods for determining how an entity was damaged and when that damage may have legal consequences. The material covers 21 common types of failures, catastrophic events, and losses that forensic engineers routinely assess. The range of topics include wind and blasting damage to structures, vehicular accidents, fires, explosions, hail damage to roofs and exteriors, lighting damage, and industrial guarding accidents.Additionally, the book offers an extensive discussion of the scientific method as it applies to forensic science and provides tips on organizing and writing an investigative report. The book also supplies the applicable codes and standards that regulate the profession, discusses the role of the forensic engineer in court proceedings, and addresses the role management plays in industrial safety. Each chapter is self-contained, highly specific, and succinct. Even more important, the analysis in each chapter is tailored to the answering of questions usually posed in the particular circumstances under discussion. The author does not skimp on the mathematical and scientific underpinnings of the subject matter. In that sense, Forensic Engineering Investigation contains the "good stuff" that is typically omitted in less challenging texts. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentals of Structural Analysis
This book uses notation that is not consistent with other textbooks, which makes it confusing and hard to read. The flexibility method chapter is almost devoid of real substance -- it goes over matrix calculations rather than explaining the theory. However, some of the other chapters (slope deflection method, moment area method) are well executed, even though the book's formating isn't easy on the eyes.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book on the Finite Element Method
This book remains a great intellectual achievement, right up there with the works of Timoshenko. I've been able to write several quite useful programs using various element stiffness matrices spelled-out explicitly in this volume.

Other books that I've read on F.E.M. seem to banter around the subject in obtuse mathematical terms. Przemieniecki derives ever step - and most importantly - he gives complete element stiffness matrices! I have copied very large 12 x 12 element stiffness matrices from this book into space frame and plate analysis programs that I've written with excellent results.

The book derives stiffness and dynamic matrices properties, essentially using the principle of minimization of potential energy. The book does not go into other types of problems such as heat-flow, torsion or fluid flow. But for structural engineers, like myself, I think that it's best to learn first the solution of stiffness problems to get a grasp of what F.E.M. is about.

The best $10.95 I've spent on a book (when it was easily available in bookstores). If you are into writing F.E.M. programs and if you can find this book, get it!

Product Description

The authors and their colleagues developed this text over many years, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in structural analysis courses at the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering of the Georgia Institute of Technology.

The emphasis is on clarity and unity in the presentation of basic structural analysis concepts and methods. The equations of linear elasticity and basic constitutive behaviour of isotropic and composite materials are reviewed. The text focuses on the analysis of practical structural components including bars, beams and plates. Particular attention is devoted to the analysis of thin-walled beams under bending shearing and torsion. Advanced topics such as warping, non-uniform torsion, shear deformations, thermal effect and plastic deformations are addressed. A unified treatment of work and energy principles is provided that naturally leads to an examination of approximate analysis methods including an introduction to matrix and finite element methods.

This teaching tool based on practical situations and thorough methodology should prove valuable to both lecturers and students of structural analysis in engineering worldwide.

This is a textbook for teaching structural analysis of aerospace structures. It can be used for 3rd and 4th year students in aerospace engineering, as well as for 1st and 2nd year graduate students in aerospace and mechanical engineering.

Since most drawings are done on CAD now, get rid of the hand lettering or please make it all caps instead of lowercase.

-Before putting in a hand drawn drawing for an exercise, draw it in CAD first. There were many math errors in dimnesions & missing dimensions. One drawing even had some dimensions that evidently "moved" to where it was referencing nothing. Several drawings that were supposed to work together had discrepancies between them.

-The Appendix is missing the Angle Channel references page stated in the Appendix Contents.

-The chapter on Pre-Engineered Metal Bldgs should be thrown out. It was very frustrating to try and gather enough information from the book to do anything but guess - that is not where you want a student or teacher to be. Get rid of all the pictures of the outside of the buildings - we've all seen them before - and include pictures of the inside & detailed pictures of how they are put together. That is where we really need to see the details. This chapter had the feel that the author thought it should be included but didn't really wanted to spend the time or effort to write it well.

-I'm sorry to say that I don't trust what information is in this book because of all the errors I found. I am not the teacher -I AM A STUDENT. I have been drafting for many years but am new to the Civil & Structural field. Most of the errors were basic drafting & omitted or conflicting information. Unfortunately my teacher doesn't trust the book now either. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED WITH CAREFUL EDITING & MAKING SURE ALL INFO NEEDED WAS INCLUDED IN THE TEXT & EASILY READ.

I am disappointed that textbooks are now soft cover, can contain many errors, and yet still have a list price that boggles the mind. ... Read more

Product Description
High-performance multiprocessor computers provide new and interesting opportunities to solve large-scale structural engineering problems. However, the development of new computational models and algorithms that exploit the unique architecture of these machines remains a challenge.High Performance Computing in Structural Engineering explores the use of supercomputers with vectorization and parallel processing capabilities in structural engineering applications. The book focuses on the optimization of large structures subjected to the complicated, implicit, and discontinuous constraints of commonly used design codes and presents robust parallel-algorithms for analysis of these structures. The authors apply the algorithms to and analyze the performance of minimum weight designs of large, steel space trusses and moment-resisting frames, with or without bracings, consisting of discrete standard shapes. They clearly show that adroit and judicious use of vectorization techniques can improved the speedup of an optimization algorithm, and that parallel processing can lead to even further speedup. With its review of the necessary background material, generous illustrations, and unique content, this is the definitive resource for the analysis and optimization of structure on shared-memory multiprocessor computers. By extension, High Performance Computing in Structural Engineering will prove equally valuable in distributed computing on a cluster of workstations ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Advanced book aimed at coders.
The intended audience for this book are people engaged in writing finite element software for large structures. Some background in numerical analysis and scientific computing required. I would love to teach a graduate course based on some of the information in this book. If you only use software and have no intention of writing it, then this book will not benefit you much.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice compendium of algorithms and methods
This is a great source book to get a quick entry into the fascinating world of optimization and modeling of complex structures. The book introduces the ideas with the help of very good illustrations and motivates the topic in a logical and coherent fashion. The book treats state of the art topics like parallel vector computation with elegance and clarity.I would recommend this to any engineer with curiosity and most certainly structural engineering professionals.Any engineer can learn from the book how to analyze complex systems. ...
