3-0 out of 5 stars Not Happy
One of the main reasons I purchased this item was because I thought it came with a CD so I could have the info on my computer. The 2010 edition had one and most major book companies are adding digital copies of books not removing them. This book is not necessarily cheap and the digital copy is really the only reason I purchased it.Will probably return the book as it is too much money for just a book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Likely to Buy the Next Issue
Another issue of the 21st century World Coins Catalog proves yet again that the whole idea was aimed mainly at selling the same thing twice to the same group of customers. The 2011 issue still is not big enough to justify the separation from the 1901-2000 volume (no, there is no need to list prices for trial strikes in the latter volume!) while the editing leaves far too much to be desired.
The list of flaws is quite long but let's be general here. The more recent issues of most countries are not brought up to date (strangely enough Ukraine is well done but its neighbour Belarus is not to such a degree that in some cases some coins from a series are listed and some are not) and this applies to a quite strange degree to countries living on coin production (and quite popular among collectors) such as Isle of Man or Gibraltar (current circulation issues introduced in 2005 are still not listed!). The prices show little connection with market reality or are not given at all (Monaco 2007 issues). Mistakes from earlier volumes are not corrected e.g. there were two Polish 2 zloty commemorative coins issued in 2005 and 2007 missing from 2010 issue and guess what? They are still missing. The same coins are listed twice. The sequence is sometimes quite inexplicable i.e. the latest coins are listed as the first. Etc etc.
Conclusion - unless you are a dealer and you need it for your business (and you can deduct the cost for tax purposes) don't buy this volume. You will find more specific and up to date information on new coin issues on the Internet and more data on their prices on eBay. To make matters worse Krause apparently decided that adding a CD was too much and cancelled it in this editions, you have to buy it separately in effect paying twice for the same faulty material.
You will have to make your decision but I am not very likely to buy 2012 issue. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars No attention to details
Many times in this bood you would look for notes that should have been listed and were not.I foound several right off the bat.I couse I would like to see something everyone dreams of - color photo's.

2-0 out of 5 stars Item very nice but shippiung with huge surprise !!!
I was quite happy receiving the item ordered.
But I was quite surprised, when I had to pay 17 Euros (about US$ 22), nothing was plan in the order !!!

So next time I'll take care may be try to buy out of USA .............
Fortunatly, Amazone had good iddea to send back about 6 Euros, it's better than nothing

2-0 out of 5 stars no CD with 16th edition :( and still black & white ??
1) still printed in black and white.Modern printing practices no longer drive the need to have this in black & white. The only thing I can assume is that all the scans are in black and white, and there would be a humoungous task to rescan all the notes in color, if they could even get ahold of all the notes.Google "banknote update" for a perfect example of what should be expected.
2) they gave us the CD with the entire SCWPM as a PDF in previous versions, but no longer?I guess that's what happens when cost cutting measures take over.At least give me the choice to buy both together.I'm not even sure if I buy the separate $19.00 DVD that it will be updated with the 16th edition, since the picture that comes up when ordering it is the 15th edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars latest edition of the standard encyclopedic reference
This 15th edition has improvements in both content and format. Besides price increases where warranted, there is also more detail on illustrations and signatures on many pieces. Notes are now listed under the name of the historical country that issued them, not as formerly under the present-day name of the country. The example editor Cuhaj uses in his Introduction to this new edition is British Honduras is now separate from Belize. Also North Korea and South Korea are catalogued separately instead of together under Korea. Similarly for Northern Ireland. Users want to know this because the present-day and now-gone historical countries of the world are listed alphabetically.

The CD of this edition has improvements also over the first CD found in the previous edition. It may "take some time to load" Cuhaj mentions, but this is because of the amount of data on it. The CD contains all the content of the voluminous, 1,000-page-plus catalog in PDF format. The CD is especially helpful because keyword searches can be done with it. Though the straightforward and detailed format of the catalog down to current prices for different grades of notes enables most users to find what general information and specifics they are looking for readily enough. With the CD, though, each note can be magnified up to 300% its size for scrutiny of details.

Collecting paper money reached the popularity of coin collecting in the end of the 1970s. Globalization of business, world travel, multicultural interests, and the disappearance and the founding of many new countries in the modern era all contributed to the jump in paper money's popularity. For beginning collectors, the front section "How to Use This Catalog" is a succinct introductory guide to the field. Notwithstanding its title with reference to this major catalog, this section has explanations of the printing of notes and gradings, advise on caring for a collection, definitions, material on terms of foreign, non-English, notes, and other fundamentals relevant apart from their connection with the catalog.

The publication of a 15th edition speaks for the place this work has established in the field of collecting paper notes. It has long been recognized by the most advanced and specialized collectors as the leading reference for its comprehensiveness and authoritativeness; and thus has also attracted the use of collectors at all levels.

4-0 out of 5 stars SCWOM, Vol 3, 15th Ed.
Standard Catalog of World Paper Money Modern Issues: 1961-Present (Standard Catalog of World Paper Money. Vol 3: Modern Issues)

Good news, there is still a CD of the entire catalog provided.

Bad news, only a hand full of countries show any value change since the last issue. Most value providers simply did not offer any input.Given the continued devaluation of the US dollar and this catalog using dollars for valuations, the prices for ALL notes should have moved slightly up just to account for this eceonomic fact.
Exceptions: Countries showing gains on nearly all notes:
Bahamas, Caymen Isalnds, Ghana, Kuwait, Macao, Nicaragua, Oman,
Portugal, Qatar, Romania, and St. Helena,

Bottom line, if you collect world currency & don't have a catalog for 1961 forward, you need this catalog. If you already have the 14th or even 13th Edition, only the new notes released in the last two years MAY appear in this issue - there is a significant time lag before new notes appear in this catalog. ... Amazon-Exclusive: Q&A with Editor-in-Chief Dennis Hall

What is the most challenging or memorable residential project you’ve worked on?
Designing my own home.

Why?
1. Really tough client.
2. No budget.
3. High client expectations
4. Have to live with the results for the last 19 years and think about all the things I would do differently.

Architects design houses, contractors build houses, and owners maintain and live in houses. That is the natural state of things. But when you design, build, and live in the same house, you have a unique perspective and only one person to blame (it is all my wife's fault). And, you learn from mistakes in a profound way (just kidding, Janice dear).

Houses are a lot like marriages. There are happy surprises and disappointing ones, and never enough money or time to do everything you want. In the end, it is not the big issues that determine happiness; it is the details that matter.

Architectural Graphic Standards for Residential Construction is a book about getting the details right. While having Architectural Graphic Standards for Residential Construction in your firm's library won't necessarily improve your marriage, why take that chance? I know I wish I had it 20 years ago.

What’s “new” about the new edition?
The minimum standard of care is compliance with building code. But with thousands of codes and standards, some conflicting with each other, how do you know you have not forgotten something? This new book informs and educates the reader on specific code requirements and how they can be applied.

Remember, our clients pay us because we have knowledge of building design and construction and know how to apply that knowledge to their situation. While no architect promises a perfect set of construction documents, this is often the expectation of the client. The better we are able to convey building information to the client, contractor, and building official, the happier the client will be.Is that not what we all want?

What new content are you excited to see specifically covered in the book?
As a forensic architect, one of the biggest problems we see is the lack of understanding of the design and construction of exterior vertical enclosures. There are three basic types of walls: barrier walls, drainage cavity walls, and pressure-equalized walls. Architectural Graphic Standards for Residential Construction explains how each of these wall types work and the importance of the water-resistive barrier and flashing in drainage cavity and pressure-equalized walls. Architectural Graphic Standards for Residential Construction also provides details with code cites for the design of exterior vertical enclosures of numerous construction materials including masonry, wood, stucco, and others.

Armed with the knowledge of how walls work and the related building code requirements, keeping the water out of your project and having a happy client is easier. It is also far more economical for the home owner, designer, and contractor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Editor-in-Chief
The authors of the new Architectural Graphic Standards for Residential Construction (RGS) have spent thousands of hours in the writing and editing of the second edition of this book. We have scrutinized every detail, modifying them to ensure that they comply with the 2009 edition of the International Residential Code and current standards of practice. During production, the knowledge content was reviewed by an industry panel of architects, contractors, educators, building officials, and others to ensure that the latest information was incorporated.

We are pleased that the second edition of RGS presents the best of the first edition along with new information. Numerous new details and information was also added that was not included in the first edition, including a contemporary issues section, which address issues identified by the RGS Advisory Board as important to owners, designers, and contractors. This RGS is a must have book for anyone involved in the design and construction of a home.

5-0 out of 5 stars IRC references are ideal
The code references that are included in the graphics make a great shortcut to being able to compare with my local code requirements. The contemporary issues is really a great guide for issues that are relevant to the residential designer and architect.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have reference

4-0 out of 5 stars Exact yet uneconomic...
Although I haven't read every single passage in this Bible, I have used it for about a year for Preaching and have read all the apocrypha through it.

NRSV is apparently a very exact and precise translation of the Bible. As the quotes on the back will tell you, this New version of the Revised Standard is innovative in its solutions to the language problems of the old ones, and uses a plethora of language to illustrate the various nuances of Bible passages.
This is a good thing if you are after precision and the meaning of passages, and I'd almost say it was between the poetry of The Authorized King James Version and the economy of language of an NIV.

However it is in this broad spectrum of words, and its over-precise translation, that this version becomes stodgy and loses the Bible's famed eloquence, in favour of being precise. It reminds me of Jeremy Clarkson's* criticism of a Car Manual that was 'literally translated from French' - phrases like 'S'il Vous Plait' is not literally 'Please', but it makes for better English that way.

This is not to say that this isn't a good and insightful translation, but it does display the above tendency to be over-precise.
By all means, buy this Bible for your translation collection. However remember that Bibles such as the NIV or The Message often make for easier study and, especially, better preaching material...

5-0 out of 5 stars This NRSV Bible is Exactly What I Was Looking For!
The New Revised Standard Version is the most understandable translation that I have ever read. The NRSV gives me a clear picture and I am excited to be reading it!This particular Bible is amazing because of its formatting - the prose is in single-column format (like an actual book) and the poetry is in two-column format. That makes it so much easier to distinguish between the two and also adds to the great experience of reading the NRSV.The paper is just the right thickness, I love the hard cover, the woodcut images are excellent, and the text is not interrupted by notes all over the place, making it a smooth, flowing read instead of a frustrating hunt for the next phrase. The Concordance in the back is fine, and if you want to do more of a study than a reading, then you will need to seek out a good Study Bible because this one is straightforward, bare-bones reading text. This Bible is exactly what I have been looking for!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent service and product
Excellent service, product arrived before its scheduled date and is a wonderful addition to my collection. Medium font makes reading easier for eye glass wearers. I will definitely purchase other items from the seller.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well made, nice size Bible
The Bible I received is the one pictured, with brown and tan leather binding. This is a well made Bible that when opened up lies flat. The text is single column, which is hard to find in a Bible (most have the narrow double columns). The font sytle is easy to read, and is a good size, so it's not hard on the eyes. Each book opens with a great looking small wood cut picture; some of them repeat, but there are a large number.

The only negative is that the paper is flimsy-it's typical Bible-paper, but is very thin. There are also no maps in the back; this is becoming more frequent, since maps are usually in color and having them would probably raise the price of the book, but its nice to have them for reference.

Just to be clear, this version, the NRSV with Apocrypha, contains all the books of the Apocrypha between the Old and New Testaments-this version would be for mainline Protestants such as Episcopalians (Anglicans) and Lutherans. It could be used by Catholics also, but a specifically Catholic version would integrate the Apocrypha into the Old Testament, and not include the Books of 1 Esdras, 2 Esdras, and the Prayer of Mannaseh. None mainline Protestants would probably purchase the NRSV without the Apocrypha.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful leather bound Bible

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand what's important
This book was on the required list for a doctoral course. I loved the easy reading style of the text, not as dry as many of my other books. The authors clearly explained the JCSEE standards and made my project for that course easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the evaluation standards in a nutshell
This was a required text for a graduate course I was taking, and it will make an good addition to my professional library. The authors have compiled a concise review of each evaluation standard with the rationale behind each standard into one tool. It is not an in-depth analysis of evaluation standards or the history of the development of the standards. Product Description

Building on what made the first edition a bestseller, CSS Mastery: Advanced Web Standards Solutions, Second Edition unites the disparate information on CSS-based design spread throughout the internet into one definitive, modern guide. Revised to cover CSS3, the book can be read from front to back, with each chapter building on the previous one. However it can equally be used as a reference book, dipping into each chapter or technique to help solve specific problems. In short, this is the one book on CSS that you need to have.

This second edition contains:

  • New examples and updated browser support information
  • New case studies from Simon Collison and Cameron Moll
  • CSS3 examples, showing new CSS3 features, and CSS3 equivalents to tried and tested CSS2 techniques

What you’ll learn

  • The best practice concepts in CSS design.
  • The most important (and tricky) parts of CSS
  • Identify and fix the most common CSS problems
  • How to deal with the most common bugs
  • Completely up to date browser support information
  • Covers CSS3 as well as CSS2 showing you the future of CSS

Who is this book for?

This book will be aimed towards intermediate web designers/developers, although the examples should be simple enough for novice designers/developers with a basic understanding of CSS to grasp. Readers will probably have read beginner/intermediate instructional books such as Web Standards Solutions and will be looking for more practical and in-depth information. This book is likely to have a broad appeal, attracting intermediate developers wanting to improve their skills as well as advanced developers wanting a useful reference.

The CSS 2/3 content of the book is delivered in a way that allows readers to learn CSS2 techniques that they can implement now in professional work, and then gem up on CSS3 techniques if they want to start looking towards the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars BIG BIG BOOK OF AWESOMENESS
I got this book for school, and it has helped a bunch with tutorials and things that you can use in real life situations. gives visual and code examples. However there is a smaller size of the book roughly 2/3's the size of this boo. Hopefully they stock that one, it would be easier to carry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A splendid resource
One of the best CSS books I've read so far. Andy managed to explain everything in a very clearly manner. I think this book will benefit both newbies and advanced web developers. I'd say this is a must for a newbie, it will broaden your imagination of what CSS is capable of doing, and will show you very simple ways of achieving it. For advanced users - you probably won't find a lot that you haven't seen, but still definitely worth skimming through. 5 stars! Andy waiting for the new edition, would love more from CSS3, and it's combination with HTML5. Follow me on Twitter @mmamedov

5-0 out of 5 stars Need an epic change in your CSS coding abilities?
To use the vernacular, <3 CSS 3!

This book taught me way more about CSS than any class I have taken. It also reads well with a casual, down-to-earth tone that makes it's ability to teach on par with learning from the author in person.

I use CSS 3 in all my Web projects, at least the parts that this book mentions are supported already. (Also check out an element called -moz-border-image, this book doesn't bring that up.)

The Friends of Ed series are all similar in reading quality and I would recommend all of their titles for those who are book learners.

5-0 out of 5 stars In Full Color, Revised Throughout, and has CSS 3
I have both 1st Edition and 2nd Edition of this book.Several incentive to get this Edition 2: It is in Full Color, content is revised throughout, and has CSS 3 you can learn and use today. If you are into CSS, twenty some dollar might be quite worth it to get one of the best CSS books out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive and readable
I read the first edition of this book in 2008 to expand my CSS knowledge. It was a great help! While I haven't read a ton of other CSS books to compare, you can't go too wrong by choosing this one. I still refer back to it once in a while when I want to remember things like how exactly Internet Explorer's old box model differs from the W3C version, or to figure out what's wrong with my floated layout.

The book starts out with a basic introduction to CSS, and then goes into a number of more advanced tips and tricks (with examples) that help show different CSS principles in practice. There's also a good discussion of different filters you can use to target certain styles to particular browsers in case one browser renders differently than others. These filters should be avoided where possible because they make the CSS uglier (and often not technically valid), but they're good to be aware of when nothing else seems to be working.

A second edition of this book was published in late 2009. I have not yet had a chance to read that edition, but if anything it should be more useful than the first. It is noticeably thicker and contains new information about CSS3, updated browser compatibility information, and additional case studies. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Book falling apart
this book was written up as used - acceptable. When I received the book, the cover was torn off the back of the book.In looking at the plastic bag it was shipped in, I saw that there was NO rips/tears on the bag. This means that the cover of the book was torn off the book BEFORE it was shipped. You should really think hard when choosing the status of your book when buying used from this company.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only Bible a skeptic will ever need.....
I ordered this bible from bellwetherbooks and the condition of the book was even better than advertised. I am not one to typically write reviews and so this will be short. My reason for purchasing this particular bible is to have a non denominational bible that is filled with the facts and no dogma whatsoever. I do not intend it to be anything more than an education for debate as i am a recovering pentecostal and have recently deconverted and now will refer to myself as Douglas Adams once did, A Radical Atheist. If you are a skeptic at any point in your journey toward escaping the grasp of religion this is an excellent version to purchase! The New Oxford Annotated Bible, Augmented Third Edition, New Revised Standard Version should be in every skeptics library!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Scholar Translation
This is a great version for anyone interested in the original translations and intentions. I have worked with two professors who could read Hebrew and one who could read Greek and all three recommended this version as being closest to the text in its orginal languages. Most of the low reviews seem to complain of this Bible's inability to stand up to the translations they are familiar with, but most of those, like King James, are inferior translations, although popular ones. If you are looking for a Bible that will 100% hold up to belief, this is probably not the one for you. It translates from the original with notes on the text that explain difficult to translate words and passages, but it does not back up 'scripture' as it is taught in church or synagogue. If you want to read one of the closest translations to the original text out there, though, this is the study Bible for you. Great for students, both religious and secular, who want to know more about the original authors. This is also great paired with Who Wrote the Bible?by Richard Elliott Friedman.

As far as the binding/print/etc., they are all very good. The pages, like most Bibles, are thin and the print is a little small, but easily readable and the notes on the text are easily accessible at the bottom of the page. I have used this extensively with little wear and tear. Since the pages are thin, I have ripped the top of a few of them. Other than that it has held up well.

Product Description

Equipping prospective educational leaders with the tools to understand ISLLC standards and develop the skills to put them into practice, this problem-based text transforms theory into practice through realistic scenarios patterned after those that appear on national examinations.

After presenting the two sets of standards that inform leadership and the organizations that develop them in the opening chapters, Practicing the Art of Leadership explores the full spectrum of educational leadership theories and their practical applications to actual classrooms and schools. This book also includes end-of-chapter pedagogical features that encourage critical thinking as well as a companion website that includes a practice performance assessment.

The new third edition of this text has been expanded to include features that encourage active student participation and involvement with the text. An additional scenario-based exercise has been added to the end of each chapter along with an updated suggested reading list and website list that both aid in further student learning and research. Two new appendices have also been added — Appendix B includes a standards chart of each state’s individual standards while Appendix C offers exam practice for the School Leader Licensure Examination. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Preparation
This book does a nice job of clearly illustrating the ISLLC standards, and was the only preparation resource I used (other than the ETS prep kit) before passing my SLLA test for the CA administrative credential. It is well written, and thoughtfully organized. Especially helpful were the wide variety of senarios. As an educator with primarily high school experience, it was very useful to read examples from K-8. After reading the book, and spending time reflecting on the problems described, I felt much better informed about implementing the ISLLC standards. Without hesitation I would recommend it for those preparing to take the administrative test.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Harper Collins Study Bible
Since I recently relocated to the buckle of the Bible Belt, I decided it's about time to actually read the good book, cover to cover.I was also interested to learn more about the Apochrypha, books which are not included in the Protestant Bible I was given as a teen.A retired liberal pastor recommended this particular study bible to me.I appreciate that it's very scholarly, though at times I find the notes overly detailed for my needs. At least, the authors are not biased in their interpretations and present the facts as understood by current research.

4-0 out of 5 stars New Testament
It is a good study bible that was recommended by my New Testament professor. It shows many accounts and coincides with my New Testament text book by Ehrman. If you are taking a New Testament class, this is the bible you need to have. It has many details on every page which explains things that we do not tend to look at while reading the bible. Its a great analytical bible. Rutgers University student.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK AND SHIPING
I NEED THIS BOOK TO HELP ME WITH MY HOME CARE PATIENT AND IT WAS AS ADVERTIZED A GREAT BOOK AND HANDED FOR DOING CARE PLANS

1-0 out of 5 stars Never got my book
The initial shipping did not specify it would take up to 3 weeks to receive which I was not happy about but then once I waited and still did not receive book I contacted the bookstore and though there was an attempt to find another book to send me, there was no longer any available copies and without any problems got my money back right away.I however ended up without a book.

5-0 out of 5 stars handbook of Home Health Standards and Documentation
This book was recieved quickly. I founds the book to be very informative and useful. I found the answers to several of my questions I had. I will keep the book close to use for a reference and I am sure I will use it a lot. Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY HELPFUL
I love this book because, being in the home health industry you have to know what you're charting. If charting is lacking then you will not get the full reimbursement that you are entitled to. Thanks alot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quickly settles disputes, answers questions, a "MUST" for all home care nurses & their management teams !!!!
I have the 4th edition (at this time is the most recent edition in print) and as a psych home care nurse, this little, portable wealth of knowledge has helped me validate to management, as well as to public health and other surveyors, the range in situations that qualify "homebound status" for psychiatric patients.Throughout the book there are samples provided to support a variety of situations that help the nurse better understand, and therefore more accurately report, on each sector of the OASIS forms.Medicare regulations are explained in detail, and I learned information that I had not known in the 14 years I have been doing mental health home care nursing. The manual provides a history and background of homecare, its evolution, provides an overview of documentaion, including the importance of coding, and its significance in home care. Also, valuable tips on improving the nursing visit, setting achievable goals, managing the case, and the guidelines for care for all the home care disciplines, are provided, so the nurse can be knowledgable regarding the roles of the other disciplines. There is a great resource section at the end of the book, and home care definitions, roles, and abbreviations are delineated in this manual as well. All home care codes are listed.

With the often-confusing regulations and data gathering tools out there, at least we on the front lines have this portable manual to help us sort out our assessments and evaluations into the accurate coding and leveling criteria that supports what we do, what we observe, and allows for the appropriate revenue to support the levels of care our patients require. As OASIS data-gathering evolves, newer editions will be needed to keep up with the miriad of changes that will ensue, but at least here is a standard we can all make good use of, and I am willing to bet every nurse, from novice to manager, will find something in this manual that was not known or delineated as well to them in the past.

This manual would also make a wonderful teaching tool for nursing students. They may as well learn early on how intricate the data-gathering tools are in the real working world.Accurate notations on the OASIS forms can either make or break a case, not only regarding reimbursement, but as to whether the levels of care, and variety of disciplines, that you feel are needed, are allowed to provide services to your patient.Hasty and inaccurate translation of evaluations and assessments onto the OASIS forms results in inability to justify to Medicare that the levels of intervention you are requesting are appropriate. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good for spoken Tibetan, but unpolished
I've been studying Tibetan for 2 months intensively and so this was the fifth textbook in a row that I've gone through (after a small locally produced one from Lhasa by Ellen Bartee, Goldstein's "Essentials of Modern Lit. Tibetan", Wilson's "Translating Buddhism from Tibetan" and finally Preston's "How to Read Classical Tibetan
Vol. 1"), and I have to say that comprehensive and practical as this book is, it was by far my least favorite.

The main thing to know is that the overwhelming emphasis here is on the spoken/auditory portion of the book, and a colloquial/idiomatic form of Tibetan. If you are aiming for an understanding of literary Tibetan this is utterly the wrong book (see Goldstein instead), and if your interest is more specifically in Classical Tibetan this book will be totally useless (instead see Wilson and then Preston's two excellent volumes).

Some things are done very well here, and others not so much, so let me break it down that way.

On the positive side:
(1) A huge vocabulary of some 2000+ words, not to mention a two-way glossary (most textbooks only have Tibetan-English glossaries)
(2) Audio recordings of all the major dialogues at the beginning of each lesson and the longer readings, great for learning the correct pronunciation of Lhasa-style Tibetan and for getting an ear for listening to native speakers.
(3) Answer keys, supplementary online material, etc., as mentioned by other reviewers.
(4) The authors obviously have a great love for their subject, and the book includes lots of cultural information on Tibetan beliefs and customs, maps of the country, lengthy discussions of different dialect groups and so on. This is much appreciated and if this is your first introduction to Tibetan culture in general you will certainly learn a lot.

Aggravating Features:
(1) The written portion of the book (that is, ignoring the audio recordings) is sloppy in many, many ways, and I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this. The book is nicely divided into 41 short and digestible lessons (almost always under 10 pages each). These begin with a dialogue in Tibetan, and in the more advanced lessons often a short reading as well, followed by a vocabulary section relating to these readings. Problem: often key vocabulary words seem to be missing in these sections. More annoying, new words seem to be somewhat randomly introduced into the vocabulary sections as you go, with no context whatsoever and no practice exercises to help you learn them. Sometimes, entire huge lists of vocabulary will be introduced that have no relation whatsoever to the preceding dialogue, e.g. a lesson on going to the doctor is suddenly followed by a list of the Tibetan words for the 30-40 most common animals in Tibet (this isn't a direct example, I've forgotten the particular instances, but it is representative). Is this really going to help a beginner? The "Civilization" sections found at the end of most lessons suffer from a similar unrealistic bent, suddenly introducing the names of the 20 or so biggest rivers in Tibet, or something similar. Not that this information is 'bad,' but is it really of any use to someone trying to gain a functional grasp of the language? I would say not.

(2) The readings introduced in the lessons also seem to have just been thrown in. So in a lesson where the main object is a dialogue that illustrates the situation of having a car breakdown and looking for accommodation, suddenly there is a reading drawn from Tibetan folk stories. Again, the reading/information isn't 'bad', but where is the consistency? The vocabulary section which follows then has you simultaneously memorizing words for 'gasoline' and for 'ritual brass butter lamp container' or something along these lines. Further, some of the translations for the readings are missing entire lines of text - not a big deal if you already know the language, but a frustration for someone trying to puzzle through it for the first time.

(3) The system of transliteration is a headache. Like many authors, these ones felt the need to introduce their own new system to 'improve' upon existing ones. Thus 'Dorje' a common name and ritual implement, which is pretty much pronounced the way you'd think, is now rendered 'Torce.' Shigatse, Tibet's second-largest city, is now spelled with a Z. How is this helping anyone? The new system is anything but intuitive. Further, it diverges from the Standardized systems used in most other textbooks and essentially every scholarly work and translation, so if you move on to any of those you will have to learn the standard systems of transliteration anyway!

(4) Following these dialogue/reading/vocabulary portions of each lesson, there are dense and difficult explanations of grammatical terms or aspects (sometimes related to what you've just been reading, sometimes not), along with some sentences that illustrate their use. Problem: these many sentences illustrating key grammar have no corresponding vocabulary sections telling you what individual words mean (and often new vocab is introduced here), and no interlinear translation, so it's difficult to look up words in the glossary at the back on your own.

(5) As someone else pointed out, the book seems in dire need of a classroom instructor and many further exercises to supplement these numerous faults, and so as a self-learner I found it frequently frustrating.

Overall this is still a worthy contribution to a very small field (Tibetan language instruction),the high quality auditory part of the book making it the best modern textbook for Spoken Tibetan. In spite of this, the 'book' (written) portion especially has a very unpolished and somewhat careless feel to it, despite its depth. It is in need of a good once over from an editor, and more consistency within the lessons' vocabulary sections and between dialogues and readings. But if you're looking to learn Spoken Tibetan it will be a huge resource - and in any case you don't really have many other options!

Recommended, with the above qualifications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Tibetan
This is a great textbook for spoken and written Tibetan. The dialogues are useful and the cds that go along with them are very good. They start with a slow reading of the text, and then go at a more conversational speed, thus your ears can get used to Tibetan step-by-step using the cds. The pronunciation of Lhasa Tibetan is used throughout the textbook, and it is described in detail at the beginning of the book in the introduction.

The vocabulary always is given in Tibetan script and phonetic transcript. And the grammar sections are clear and concise.

One thing that I really like about this textbook is the way it explains the relationship between spelling and pronunciation. All of the other textbooks on Tibetan that I have seen either don't get into that, or they just explain that the spelling is not phonetic and leave it at that. Few and far between is a Tibetan textbook that actually will explain the details of the spelling system and how that impacts pronunciation, and this one does. Which for anyone trying to learn how to read and write the language, this is fundamental. Thus this book gets 5 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Study Guide
This is the best Tibetan language resource on the market - the CDs which are included are fantastic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for learning Tibetan
Great book. Had used it before in a Tibetan class at a university but lost it. The informative sections in each chapter also helped prepare me when I went over to Dharamsala to study. The author included great colloquial additions!

5-0 out of 5 stars Intense detail, linguists will love. Little much for a beginner and the phonetic spelling seems a little weird.
Love it. CDs are great. slow speed conversations then the same ones at normal speed. Lots of context and description and comparisons to other languages - as a beginning Tibetan student and long time Dharma practitioner, I highly recommend! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete
Ahlan Wa Sahlan is a textbook. This fact is important because without the benefit of having an instructor the layout of this book is likely to frustrate people studying independently.Having used this textbook for Arabic 1 and Arabic 2 at the university level I can attest that this book has some serious flaws.

The first thing most people notice when they open Ahlan Wa Sahlan is the typeset and the graphics. The book simply looks old and outdated. Photos are grainy and pixilated and despite some graphic enhancements for the new edition this book still has the look of a textbook 20 years old. The accompanying CD and DVD are well produced but it is apparent that this is the real extent of the "updated" edition. This in itself wouldn't be a problem but the book's also presents fundamental flaws early on. First, Arabic script is introduced in the very first chapter without any transliteration or translation, and this pattern repeats itself consistently throughout the book. This is critical because studies have shown that language learning is often facilitated by side-by-side translations. It is crucial that beginning students of Arabic quickly associate the completely foreign looking alphabet with English equivalent letters, words and sounds.

As with any new subject, repetition is key, but Ahlan Wa Sahlan pays superficial attention to things like Arabic numerals and then jquite humerously simply starts using them. Advanced students often find themselves flipping pages wildly in search of information (barely) covered in earlier chapters. Likewise, the index is confusing with no "quick" guides to grammar rules, vocabulary or useful phrase for basic communication.

On a deeper level, the explanation of the Arabic verbs ya and waw and the explanation of the tamarbutah and consonant-vowel-consonant patterns are glossed over too quickly, too soon which make subsequent grammar lessons that much harder.Arabic speaking countries have vibrant cultures but almost no attention is paid to the culture and pyschology behind the Arabic language. In other language books this might be overlooked but Arabic is completely unqiue in that the essential structure of the language has remained completely unchamged for almost 1,400 years due largley to intense safeguarding by the uluma (Muslim scholars). This not only makes Arabic unique and fascinating, but exploring this facet actually helps the student of Arabic better understand the most basic aspects of the language,

What does the book do right? It emphasizes the writing of Arabic script. In fact, this is about the only thing it consistently hammers home with exercises presented in every chapter.

In the end Ahlan Wa Sahlan suffers from a lack of organizational forethought. As part of a university course this book gets a THREE star rating because a good professor will easily be able to fill in the gaps, but as a self-study tool this book should not even be considered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Arrived Promptly for Course
Important textbook ordered just before start of classes, arrived on time and exactly as needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Great book.

After reading the other reviews, I realized that it may not be clear that you need to have the accompanying workbook also (this is the material that introduces you to the alphabet, sounds, etc.).Those two together provide an excellent intro to Arabic.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible terrible audio, not compatible with iPod or other players
The effort and care put into the creation of the MP3 CD (it is not an Audio CD as a music CD by the way) is literally rubbish, a dog's job from execution to packaging.

Firstly, it is not because the files are in MP3 format that make them ready to use on a iPod. In order for a bunch of MP3 files to be useful and easy to store, find and manage in a player, the publisher (Yale University Press) MUST put some effort to properly tag the MP3s with the following id3 information:

- the freaking name of the album
- the freaking name of the artist (author)
- the freaking TITLE of the track
- the freaking NUMBER of the freaking track

If this information is not provided, the MP3 player won't be able to sort the tracks into albums, sort the order of them against each other and won't display the collection of MP3s in an order that will make sense to humans.

Now multiply the lazy job of Yale University Press by 240 tracks and what you have is a massive mess hindering any attempt for productive learning as you will spend more time trying to find the badly recorded tracks than listening to their crackling, noisy and annoying sound when they are needed.

The geniuses at Yale went a step further to make things even more difficult for us. If it is not enough to completely ignore ID3 tagging, they named the files in the following format:

[track number] [Lesson number (which is from 1 to 24)] [Lesson name] [page number].

Well done Yale, except that by putting the track number before the lesson number you make all the files that start with a track number to bunch up together on an iPod playlist, for example:

...01 - Lesson one - Blah blah - p. 01
01 - Lesson two - Blah blah - p. 21
01 - Lesson three - Blah blah - p. 31
02 - Lesson one - Blah blah - p. 03
02 - Lesson two - Blah blah - p. 23
02 - Lesson three - Blah blah - p. 33
03 - Lesson one - Blah blah - p. 05
03 - Lesson two - Blah blah - p. 25
03 - Lesson three - Blah blah - p. 35...

Oh well, unless you are willing and know how to spend a few hours adding this information manually to 240+ tracks so that the files are organised on an MP3 player such as the iPod, or unless you are going to use the files as they are straight from the CD on a computer but not on iTunes, Winamp or a software that needs ID3 tags to organise tracks, this book will be utterly useless and your learning experience painful and frustrating.

About the book itself, you will need to learn the alphabet before (this is standard and not a fault of the book) nevertheless I have some concerns with regards to its pace and would not recommend it for self-learners until they have done a couple of other books before.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Study Bible
I was really disappointed in this hardcover version.Though more expensive, it is an older translation than the college edition. It does have footnotes, but they are not nearly as extensive as hoped for.

4-0 out of 5 stars What I wanted but slow delivery
This Bible seems to be the most comprehensive version of the New Revised Standard Version, which is considered by many scholars to be the best modern translation of the Holy Bible. Its commentary is thought provoking and concise.I would say, however, that this version is not for the casual reader of the Bible.A grasp of basic theology is needed to get into the commentary. As with most Study Bibles, I understand that the remarks are someone else's opinion.I purchased this Bible specifically for an Education for Ministry course I'm starting.

If someone is looking for an easier to understand Bible, "The Message" should be more to your liking.I have both, and often refer to The Message to make sure I'm understanding the meaning of confusing passages.

I would have rated this product as 5 stars were it not for the absurdly long time it took this product to come from the vendor in South Carolina to me. If you want this product, I would recommend using a different vendor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should have been my 1st Study Bible
This should have been my very first Study Bible. The RSV translation, notes and the Apocrypha makes studying the Bible an enjoyable experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful useful Study Bible.
Print is clear and easy to read and the leather binding is beautiful! Bible contains study hints and a lot of additional information in the back. There is no red lttering in the New Testament but I always found that distracting. I purchased this for a EfM course and it came highly recommended by the advance students and the instructor.

5-0 out of 5 stars The New Oxford Annotated Bible, RSV, Expanded Edition
I find that this older, 1977, Second Edition of the New Oxford Annotated Bible (NOAB), Expanded Edition, with its Revised Standard Version (RSV) translation "reads" much better than the brand-new, 2010, Fourth Edition, NOAB with its NEW Revised Standard Version (NRSV) translation. Here is how I came to that conclusion:

In my zeal to buy a Bible the minute I became a born-again Christian, I rushed out and bought the brand-new Fourth Edition of the New Oxford Annotated Bible (NOAB), copyright 2010, in the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) translation. As I understand it, the NRSV tries harder than any other translation not to offend anyone."Men" becomes "persons," etc.I took my Fourth Edition for a test drive at a Bible study class at my new, evangelical church and found that the Fourth Edition NOAB didn't read as well as the Bibles the other church members were using.I could compare how my NRSV translation sounded in comparison to theirs by silently reading the same chapter and verse that someone else was reading out loud from a different Bible.

In the end, I decided to mail my politically-correct Fourth Edition NOAB to my best friend, who is just getting his toes wet in Christianity, and to purchase a copy of the older Second Edition NOAB, copyright 1977, that I'm reviewing here----the edition with the distinctive white cross against a black circle on the red cover.Another reason I like this 1977 NOAB is that the Old Testament is edited and introduced by Herbert G. May, who taught at the former Oberlin Graduate Theological Seminary.I graduated from Oberlin College, so the connection of this Bible with Herbert G. May and Oberlin is a strong drawing card for me.

Speaking of cards, Oxford U. Press includes a How-To-Care-For-Your-Bible card with the NOAB, warning the reader not to insert church bulletins or any other paper bookmarks in the Bible because using such bookmarks could damage the "signature" of the sewn pages. I guess you are supposed to use a ribbon as a bookmark, but this NOAB does not come with any ribbons attached.

My favorite Bible right now, however, is neither of the above; it's the paperback New American Standard Bible (NASB) New American Standard Bible Updated Edition, which is also available on Amazon. To make this paperback Bible last longer, I covered it with clear shelf paper that I bought at Walmart. Now I have a compact, durable Bible in the same NASV translation that my pastor uses.I carry it everywhere in my tote bag and read it whenever I'm stuck in a checkout line or waiting for a drawbridge to lower.Because this Bible is an inexpensive paperback, I don't have to worry about damaging the glued-together binding by using a paper bookmark.Even though this Bible is cheap, it is printed in nice, dark type that is easy to read in spite of the small font.

If font size is an issue, you might prefer a larger-format version of the NASB.The larger-format version my pastor recommends is the Ryrie NASB Study Bible The Ryrie NASB Study Bible Hardback- Red Letter with DVD.Ryrie taught at Dallas Theological Seminary, which is where my pastor studied.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great collection
Ever start singing a show tune you'd just heard in a furniture store, and get stuck on a line?"Hide your heart from sight, lock your dreams at night, it could happen to you..."That's where this book comes in.It gives you words and melody line for 100 songs and these are strictly A-list of the Great American Songbook (plus some bossa nova, a nice touch), with no filler.Put together the 10 books you've been allowed to take on your Desert Island trip, then slip this one in your back pocket.

As others have pointed out, it's not really suited for instrumentalists. But that, along with the fact that you can probably find all this material on the Internet, is undoubtedly what allowed the publisher to offer this collection at such a low price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Make sure you realize what you are getting
This is a great book if you are ONLY looking for the melody, or lyrics, or chords. I came across this book thinking, great, so many songs. I was disapointed when I realized what it was. I can't complain. The price is right.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jazz Standards Melody Line, Chords and Lyrics
This handy, pocket sized paperback is easy to throw in a bag or tuck into an instrument case. With a melody line in treble cleff, chord symbols and lyrics, it also has a guitar chord guide in the back.Full of real standards like "Caravan," "Misty," and "Take the ATrain," the book covers most of your bases when it comes to playingcommon rep. Most of the tunes are laid out on a single sheet, though a fewdo require page turns. Also, the lack of spiral binding could makes ithard to keep on a music stand. However, I can't complain about the price. This book is a good buy. ... Read more
