4-0 out of 5 stars Nice slim introductory book
This is a nice little book, 64 pages, color glossy. Not every picture is of a cepalopod tho, whole pages are of fishing (?) shots. But the pictures that are there are really nice.I wish there were some kind of coffeetable type book of just cephalopods. Some of the other books listed under cephalods are incredibly expensive, unfortunately. But this isa nice appetizer I suppose. haha.

Join me on my first tour of duty in the Navy - what went on in Boot camp, the schools I attended, what life was really like on board an aircraft carrier that was better known for fires than anything else! Come with me on a haze gray and underway misadventure on a guided missile destroyer that had trouble shooting its own missiles (let alone torpedoes) and all of the unimaginable things that happened to me. . .the people I met and what I witnessed in between. Telling things as they happened, it's a hilarious, serious, yet very straightforward look at life in the U.S. Navy during the Cold War period (1980-1984). So set the sea and anchor detail, it's time to hit the high seas! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spoken in real Navy terms
Great book for all ex-Navy men and women. While I have not serve in the service but the author gives a "picture" of what all was going on and his involvement. This is a book that I could not put down. By not having the expeirece as the author did I often wonder too what if I had joined or not? The author gives a good insligt in to his first four years in the US Navy.It makes me become more thankful for those who did enlist and serve and it makes me wonder what if...I had enlisted too?

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great read!
I really enjoyed reading this book. The author goes into great detail about life in the 80's Navy. From boot camp to his first reenlistment. He brought back great memories for me as he painted a path that sometimes traced my very footsteps and at other times answered the 'wonder what would happen if I had done it this way instead' questions.

It was good to let him get in my head and show me around both on duty and off - watching what he was doing and knowing his thoughts as well. His descriptions of buildings and ships are detailed.

He even had good things to say about snipes. :) Made me regret turning off the hot water while entering port.

3-0 out of 5 stars United States Navy
I thought his book was pretty interesting, because I could relate to his first four years, since I was in the Navy during that same period as a Radioman also.I do wish he would of included more pictures, and gave more description on what he did in basic training, and Radioman "A" school. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Dive into the Study of These Wonderful Sea Creatures!
This is a fine starter series for kids interested studying different animals. Octopuses, Squids, and Cuttlefish is our most recent adventure with the wonderful and interesting Animals in Order series...what can I say, my kids just can't get enough of these! What I like about this series is that it takes time at the beginning of each book to look at (briefly) what makes an animal a coleoid, specifically getting into what traits exactly make an animal a coleoid. The book then goes into the "order" of living things which details the kingdom, phylum and class , order, family and species (with a handy visual chart for reference, great for younger kids, so they can SEE how it works rather than just read it or have it read to them). This is one of the better features of this series and the exact same text in this particular section appears in every book in the series. Next the text goes specifically into where coleoids fit into animal kingdom, breaking it down (in words and pictures again) to kingdom (animal), phylum (mollusk), class (cephalopoda) and order (coleoids). In this section we learn that there are seven classes of mollusks, one of which is the coleoids.

Octopuses, Squids, and Cuttlefish goes from there into an overview of fourteen species, this section includes Family, Common Example, Genus and Species and Size for each coleoid discussed and each animal is given one full page for written description and one full page COLOR photo...excellent for fully engaging the reader! Coleoids included here are the Common Octopus, the Pacific Red Octopus, California Market Squid, Vampire Squid, and the European Common Cuttlefish!

Overall, a fantastic way to introduce various types of coleoids to your curious young reader! What you get in Octopuses, Squids, and Cuttlefish is an excellent overview of cross section of types of coleoids. As always with this series, I was pleased to find that at the end of the book the author/publisher also included a short recommended reading list and some really great web pages to do more research on...the kids in particular LOVED this! The books in this series would make a wonderful addition to a classroom library or as gifts for your favorite young reader who has a passion for animals; the information here is scientifically presented, accented with wonderful color photos and is both interesting and informative!

4-0 out of 5 stars my kids love this book
My kids and I picked up this book at the library. While I read it to them, my 5-year-old fell off the couch laughing.I love the way that the plotline is really fleshed out in the pictures, with their speech balloons. The "official" review complains that there is little resolution in the book, but I didn't feel that resolution was the point. The point is that mayhem and laughter follow Arnie and Raymond.Really funny if you understand a little Spanish.(Watch the wolf cub being chased around by a little bunny girl with a crush on him...)
I strongly recommend that parents read this one out loud. Most elementary school kids won't have the subtlety to understand that what Arnie tells his mom about his school day is only the bare-bones version of what really happened.
My kids (8, 5, and 3) love to recite, "Never poke a squid in the ink bag -- that's the rule of the sea."

4-0 out of 5 stars Never Poke a Squid
Very funny book about two friends and a costume adventure (in class). If an adult is reading it out loud be sure he or she reads it through a few times.Part of the fun is the "delivery" of the dialogue - it will be more fun for younger kids who are not as fluid with their reading. ... Read more

Product Description
The act of reading is a miracle. Every new reader's brain possesses the extraordinary capacity to rearrange itself beyond its original abilities in order to understand written symbols. But how does the brain learn to read? As world-renowned cognitive neuroscientist and scholar of reading Maryanne Wolf explains in this impassioned book, we taught our brain to read only a few thousand years ago, and in the process changed the intellectual evolution of our species.Wolf tells us that the brain that examined tiny clay tablets in the cuneiform script of the Sumerians is configured differently from the brain that reads alphabets or of one literate in today's technology. There are critical implications to such an evolving brain. Just as writing reduced the need for memory, the proliferation of information and the particular requirements of digital culture may short-circuit some of written language's unique contributions-with potentially profound consequences for our future.Turning her attention to the development of the individual reading brain, Wolf draws on her expertise in dyslexia to investigate what happens when the brain finds it difficult to read. Interweaving her vast knowledge of neuroscience, psychology, literature, and linguistics, Wolf takes the reader from the brains of a pre-literate Homer to a literacy-ambivalent Plato, from an infant listening to Goodnight Moon to an expert reader of Proust, and finally to an often misunderstood child with dyslexia whose gifts may be as real as the challenges he or she faces. As we come to appreciate how the evolution and development of reading have changed the very arrangement of our brain and our intellectual life, we begin to realize with ever greater comprehension that we truly are what we read. Ambitious, provocative, and rich with examples, Proust and the Squid celebrates reading, one of the single most remarkable inventions in history. ... Read more
