Product Description
Customize your sound environment for a better quality of life

• Shows how to use music and sound to reduce stress, enhance learning, and improve performance

• Provides detailed guidelines for musicians and health care professionals

• Includes a new 75-minute CD of psychoacoustically designed classical music

What we hear, and how we process it, has a far greater impact on our daily living than we realize. From the womb to the moment we die we are surrounded by sound, and what we hear can either energize or deplete our nervous systems. It is no exaggeration to say that what goes into our ears can harm us or heal us.

Joshua Leeds--a pioneer in the application of music for health, learning, and productivity--explains how sound can be a powerful ally. He explores chronic sensory overload and how auditory dysfunction often results in difficulties with learning and social interactions. He offers innovative techniques designed to invigorate auditory skills and provide balanced sonic environments.

In this revised and updated edition of The Power of Sound, Leeds includes current research, extensive resources, analysis of the maturing field of soundwork and a look at the effect of sound on animals. He also provides a new 75-minute CD of psychoacoustically designed classical music for a direct experience of the effect of simplified sound on the nervous system. With new information on how to use music and sound for enhanced health and productivity, The Power of Sound provides readers with practical solutions for vital and sustained well-being.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for any healer or musician
I was looking for literature to help me expand my understanding and music, in other words to broaden my horizons and open my mind about sound. I found that exactly on The Power of Sound. It is both very well researched and complete, the book has a complementary website, which is very useful because if you want to get deeper into any of the subjects or you want to read about what other people say about a topic, you can go to the website. This help the book to be less dense but still gives you the option to go deeper.

Joshua Leeds is a musician and producer, he is not a doctor, and he acknowledges this. Mr. Leeds knows his limitations and he encourages collaboration between healers, doctors, musicians and specialists of other disciplines. I also see this as a plus in the book.

I read the ebook, so unfortunately I didn't get to listen to the audio examples. I do miss them a little bit. I wish they had the kindle version with mp3s or something like that (website samples). That will be even better.

I don't have anything bad to say about this book. I feel that it is very complete, seriously written and researched, still fun to read and very inspiring. I take this book as a springboard to go deeper into specific areas of sound healing now that I have a better understanding about the current trends.

5-0 out of 5 stars gives a deeper understanding for using music for healing
Reviewed by Irene Watson for Reader Views (10/10)

As a former psychosynthesis therapist, I used music as part of the healing modality so I was interested in reviewing "The Power of Sound" to see what Joshua Leeds has to say.I have to say, I wasn't disappointed.Much of what he said only confirmed what I knew or experienced, however, I did learn some aspects that I wasn't aware of.

As a dog lover, I was specifically interested in studies that were done with them. One pilot summary indicates that "70 percent of anxiety behaviors were reduced with psychoacoustically designed music.""CDs calmed the dogs enough to make them lie down."I found this fascinating and although I do have a calm dog, I decided to play soft classical music for her when she is sleeping.

However, this book isn't about dogs or animals; it is about humans using music for better health, disposition, and environment.Leeds alludes to countless research that has been done over the years of how music affects the brain. He states "There are many things to consider when it comes to application-specific sound tracks. Drone, repetition, rhythm, harmony, melody, timbre, form, intent, the iso principle, harmonics, acoustics, synthesis...these are the basic building blocks of music regardless of the intent. But when the intent is music that informs and supports positive outcomes in human function, a different sensibility moves in."He further states that "The complexity comes in the interrelationship of sound and body.Psychoacoustically, we play two instruments - that of tone and that of body."This clearly indicates that our bodies respond to music and using it for healing or health maintenance gives us balance and vibrant health.

Used for basic understanding, either for personal or professional use, "The Power of Sound" is a powerful tool at its best.Leeds, through his thorough research, is giving us a glimpse into another world of music.(By-the-way, the 75-minute CD of psychoacoustically designed classical music is awesome!) ... Product Description

Â"A balanced yet biting critique . . . Gitlin is a savvy guide to our increasingly kinetic times.Â"Â--San Francisco Chronicle

In this original look at our electronically glutted, speed-addicted world, Todd Gitlin evokes a reality of relentless sensation, instant transition, and nonstop stimulus, which he argues is anything but progress. He shows how all media, all the time fuels celebrity worship, paranoia, and irony, and how attempts to ward off the onrush become occasion for yet more media. Far from bringing about a Â"new information age,Â" Gitlin argues, the digital torrent has fostered a society of disposable emotions and casual commitments, and threatens to make democracy a sideshow. In a new afterword, Gitlin takes measure of the most recent wave of inundation in the form of iPods, blogs, and YouTube.

Both a startling analysis and a charged polemic, Media Unlimited reveals the unending stream of manufactured images and sounds as a defining feature of our civilization and a perverse culmination of Western hopes for freedom.

2-0 out of 5 stars Is original media criticism an oxymoron?
While reading this book, I had the feeling that the author was making his observations from the perspective of an overgrown teenager, home from school around 3 pm and making puerile rants at the (...) tube, while downing a coke and potato chips. The author, who has said elsewhere that TV has become "our ground of being," borrowing Paul Tillich's phrase, doesn't seem to acknowledge or understand that most American adults work hard for a living and really don't invest a lot of mental effort in watching TV.They're actually busy with making dinner, dealing with their kids, paying the bills, downing a couple of cool ones, and getting up in the morning to do it over again. This is not to disparage the hard working American, but rather to suggest that most people really don't take TV all that seriously, or even pay it much attention.Just because the TV is on, doesn't mean people are watching it, or at least watching it critically. They have more basic needs to attend to. From 1980 to 2002, the time on the job (any job) has increased by about ten hours a week. I don't think information or pseudo information gets through to a culture that is so sleep-deprived.(...)Additionally, Gitlin takes his subject matter entirely too seriously. I mean understanding media was pretty much covered by McLuhan, and, just as A. Whitehead said that all philosophy was a footnote to Plato, one could say the same for McLuhan in relationship to his progenitors. Additionally, Gitlin's perspective's really couldn't be that profound since he seems to be called upon by the media as the academic in residence for news shows.I think it may be time for some producers to cull their rolodexes (or is that palm pilots?) I started this book, believing I would be at least somewhat intellectually challenged, but in the end, the sentences sort of just rolled over me like a syndicated drama series rerun.

2-0 out of 5 stars Moves at Speed of Light, Goes Nowhere
As a fan of Gitlin, I was hoping that he'd give me the bottom line - his bottom line - on the air we breathe today, the same way that brave souls such as Lasch, Marcuse, and Bell have done. But Gitlin isn't brave. He admits, honestly, up front, that he will reach few conclusions, and merely wants to lay out what we face each day on the streets, on TV, and on the net. What follows is a stream-of-consciousness depiction of life today.I want more than that from Gitlin.I want his conclusions, not some lame statement that he hasn't reached any yet. He's not getting any younger.Lots of other fabulous thinkers have failed at this stage of their lives. It's time for his masterpiece - the next book, perhaps.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gitlin, media studies syllabus standard
FYI - before you take in the reveiws below, know that Gitlin is considered advanced reading, and a standard among graduate level coursework in mass media, culture and politics.Consider 2003 version of "The Whole World Is Watching: Mass Media in the Making and Unmaking of the New Left".

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs some spark
This book tries to be to academic in its nature and is void of a head-on critique of how the media negatively affects us with constant agitation, violence and sales scams. To name some points. It does explain well some general structural issues in the media.
I heard a great interview with Mr. Gitlin on NPR a couple of years ago which prompted me to buy the book soon after. I was disappointed to read a more or less uncritical analysis of the media structure or how media constantly censors out this type of information "that's [not] fit to print" while distracting everyone with dumb advertisements. Sort of reading an advertisers gung-ho explanation of how interesting advertising is. If you are into the media and how great it is, this is "a great book"...

4-0 out of 5 stars A Different Twist on Media
You read a lot about sex and violence in media and how our society is threatened by our casual acceptance of skin and death. But you don't read too much about the shear volume and pervasiveness of media. You also don't read too much about how media delivers feelings. These feelings we get from media in a way can substitute the feelings we get from action in real life.I love the topic, but did not give five stars because the point of the book never seems to really take off. ... Perhaps you’ve always wondered how public radio gets that smooth, well-crafted sound. Maybe you’re thinking about starting a podcast, and want some tips from the pros. Or maybe storytelling has always been a passion of yours, and you want to learn to do it more effectively. Whatever the case—whether you’re an avid NPR listener or you aspire to create your own audio, or both—Sound Reporting: The NPR Guide to Audio Journalism and Production will give you a rare tour of the world of a professional broadcaster.
Jonathan Kern, who has trained NPR’s on-air staff for years, is a gifted guide, able to narrate a day in the life of a host and lay out the nuts and bolts of production with equal wit and warmth. Along the way, he explains the importance of writing the way you speak, reveals how NPR books guests ranging from world leaders to neighborhood newsmakers, and gives sage advice on everything from proposing stories to editors to maintaining balance and objectivity. Best of all—because NPR wouldn’t be NPR without its array of distinctive voices—lively examples from popular shows and colorful anecdotes from favorite personalities animate each chapter.
As public radio’s audience of millions can attest, NPR’s unique guiding principles and technical expertise combine to connect with listeners like no other medium can. With today’s technologies allowing more people to turn their home computers into broadcast studios, Sound Reporting couldn’t have arrived at a better moment to reveal the secrets behind the story of NPR’s success.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to radio production the NPR way
Confession: I stopped listening to NPR on a regular basis years ago. The endless assaults on everything American by this left-wing, largely taxpayer supported medium just got to be too much for me. A pair of stories did it. The first was an extremely well done piece about a cop killer who became a celebrity in prison. There was no mention of the murdered cop's widowed wife and now fatherless children. It was all about the convicted murderer - and his battle to become a regular NPR contributor. The next story was about a woman who mingled with cattle in a stockyard, narrating a diatribe against American meat eaters by assuming the viewpoint of a cow.

That was it. I had listened to NPR for years, sometimes laughing at its old-fashioned Soviet slant, but always admiring how well it produced propaganda - and I still do admire the production values, though I would like to see all taxpayer funding ended immediately.

Jonathan Kern has put together THE book on, as the title so aptly states, "Sound Reporting: The NPR Guide To Audio Journalism And Production". NPR knows how to produce riveting radio. They are as good as the BBC once was. This is really a guide for the staffs of NPR member stations, though anyone who relies even occasionally on the spoken word to make their point will benefit from reading this book.

There are hilarious aspects to the book, such as the relatively short (15 pages) chapter on "fairness" in reporting. Kern quotes the "NPR Journalist's Code Of Ethics and Practices" which holds that the "network's coverage must be fair, unbiased, accurate, complete and honest", which NPR never is (in my opinion). As Bernard Goldberg explained of CBS and other New York media, they all work in a universe of people who think like they do. Thus, they never realize that they are all left-wingers who approach every story from the perspective of a left-winger, like the New York Times writer who wrote a story on women's reproductive rights without quoting anyone who wasn't an advocate of only one side of the argument. When called on this glaring omission, the reporter explained she knew no one who didn't agree with her position. So it is with the reporters of NPR. They don't think they are biased because everyone they know is biased in the same way.

The book goes on to explore in a methodical fashion every element of reporting the NPR way - and Jonathan Kern has done a great job of doing this.

There are chapters on writing for broadcast, NPR radio reporting, field producing, story editing, production techniques for the reporter/host two-way, reading on the air, hosting, newscasting, booking (surprisingly interesting), producing, production ethics (which suffers from the same defect as the chapter on fairness), program producing, program editing, commentaries, studio directing and repurposing for the web.

Clearly I am not a fan of the political views that are universal to almost all NPR staff and their work product. Even so, I admire the quality of their work and Jonathan Kern has done a fantastic job of describing how each aspect of NPR's style of broadcast journalism should be done. Whatever your politics and your stance toward taxpayer dollars funding what is essentially a propaganda outlet for the left-wing, this book is an invaluable guide to the art of producing effective audio propaganda or - when practiced by objective journalists - audio journalism.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good if you want to work for NPR, bad if you want to be in commercial radio
It is probably sacrilege to say this, but I get my radio news from all-news AM radio stations. Not "talk show" radio, but 24/7 news like KFWB in L.A. and WINS in N.Y.C. This book is a perplexing mixture of general audio production, interview techniques, and most heavily-handed, making whatever you do conform to NPR stylistic rules.

Woefully missing is anything that would apply to either a commercial news radio station or the news department in a commercial music radio station. Although there is technical information which applies to all, the entire book seems to expect you to be a true believer in the NPR way of doing things. I have nothing against NPR, of course I listen to public radio. However, everything stylistic in this book is presented as the only way things are done, including many annoying quirks of NPR style. The author does not appear to be able to differentiate style from substance, and that is the book's biggest problem.

As an analogy I would point to Wikipedia's stylistic quirks. All articles start with a brief introduction, then a detailed table of contents, then sections with just the right number of citations, then links, then notes. Now, there are an infinite number of ways information can be presented on a web page (or on the radio). Wikipedia's method works, but almost all of its components are presented in a way that conforms to their style. The same for NPR. If you are on the radio and cue up a piece by Daniel Schorr, there is no objective reason it has to play like this:
-Daniel Schorr, "I can never visit Philadelphia without being reminded of the story of the penguin."
-Nina Totenberg: "NPR's Daniel Schorr."
-Daniel Schorr "It was a cloudy day in 1956 and we were visiting the Philadelphia Zoo..."

But stylistically that is how all such interactions have to happen, according to this book. Now for someone looking for information on host/guest interaction, all they're going to find in this book is NPR's version of host/guest interaction. Separating information from style will be very difficult for anyone unfamiliar with a radio newsroom.

From the book description and reviews I had expected a book on how to produce great radio stories. What I found was a book on how to do radio NPR's way. The undercurrent is that NPR is the only radio news worth listening to in the entire country. They aren't.

5-0 out of 5 stars NPR REVEALED
If you ever wanted to know why NPR sounds the way it does, has been so successful, or is so hard to emulate, Kern and NPR staffers reveal the secrets to great broadcast journalism.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating insights into NPR story production
A fascinating look into the background, planning and production of NPR audio stories. This book delivers on its promise to help readers understand the craft of audio storytelling. I would have liked to have a little more technical information on selecting microphones, setting levels, controlling background noise etc. but am generally pleased with the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Probably the most authoritative book on NPR you'll find
As someone who works in journalism at a NPR affiliate, I have to say that "Sound Reporting: The NPR Guide to Audio Journalism and Production" -- is probably the most authoritative book on the subject of audio journalism published so far.

Whether you are new to journalism -- or if you've been in the industry for a good while and would like a refresher -- this book has something for you.

While it deals specifically with audio journalism and production as it pertains to NPR (and sometimes its member stations), this guide is nonetheless invaluable to anyone who wants to get involved in news reporting operations at ANY level (including radio, print, TV and new media). Want to know what it's like to be a news host, field reporter, booker, producer, studio director ... or commentator? It's all here.

More importantly, "Sound Reporting" delves into the ever-so-important topics of fairness, ethics (as applied to both reporting and editing), and how to write well for broadcast. It also offers suggestions on how news providers can stay relevant in the age of the Internet and new media (e.g. podcasts, blogs, etc.).Since all forms of news reporting (print, TV, radio, blogs, etc.) are converging on the Internet, this is especially relevant for today.

And if you're just an NPR geek who wants to learn more about how shows like "Morning Edition" and "All Things Consider" get made in a 24-hour cycle and broadcast across the country -- this is the book for you. My only minor issue is that "Sound Reporting" could have been a bit shorter, but it's a relatively minor nitpick because the book is very readable and the author, Jonathan Kern, has a witty and even occasionally humorous writing style. It's well worth reading! ... Product Description
In virtually every system of spirituality the world has ever known, sound has been considered a direct link between humanity and the divine. The ancient mystery schools all taught their students the use of sound as a creative and healing force.

Now, Sacred Sounds by Ted Andrews reveals how to tap into the magical and healing aspects of voice, resonance, and music. On a physical level, these techniques can be used to alleviate aches and pains, lower blood pressure, and balance hyperactivity in children. On a metaphysical level, they can be used to induce altered states of consciousness, open new levels of awareness, stimulate intuition, and increase creativity.

Sounds can heal through their vibratory energy. To understand how this works you need to understand the power of vibratory energies within your body. This book will teach you about the chakras and how energy flows through them. You'll see what happens if that energy is blocked and learn how sound can be used to free the energy, a practice that can result in healing the physical body.

To be even more specific, you'll learn the secrets of esoteric toning, healing method that involves vibrating certain vowel sounds. You will discover that each vowel has different pronunciations and different purposes. Thus, if you pronounce the vowel "a" as in "hay," you can help with problems of the chest and circulation. If you pronounce it as in "cat," you can heal respiration and mouth problems. And if you pronounce it as in "saw," it can aid digestive problems. All of this and more is fully explained in Sacred Sounds.

Perhaps the most famous users of sound were the bards. In Sacred Sounds you will learn their history, lore, training methods, healing techniques, and more.

In short, when it comes to using sound for magical and spiritual purposes, Sacred Sounds should be your key text. Get it today.

Ted Andrews is a kind of person that leaves you with a feeling that whatever he does he does well. This also holds true for this book. It is a well structured and easy to read book for understanding the importance of sound in our daily lives. We are also reminded in the storytelling section that the words of the songs that we frequently listen can have a great subconscious impact on our feelings and emotions.

good, practical book on using both words and music to heal - yourself and others. very easy to read, and follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing With Sound (Words & Music)
This is a very well written book, as Ted Andrew's books are. They provide a great deal of explanation, details, and how-to instructions. This book provides lots of background information on the use of sound, in words and in music and how sound has related to healing for many years, much of which has become a lost art.Ted covers a lot of history, for credibility and for understanding the linear path to nowadays.

If you think it is not logical that sounds can affect you, ask yourself how you feel when you listen to certain types of music.Try it.Does some music make you angry, some sad, some peaceful, and does some music make you feel love? How about words? Is there a word someone could call you to make your blood boil?Is there something nice someone said to you recently that made you feel like you could just melt? That's just to get you thinking. Now what if someone told you that you could maybe begin to reverse a health problem by playing a note that corresponds the the chakra area that has an energy blockage?Bull??? Worth a try?

Ted goes all the way into details of 10 names of God from the Qabala and how to tone them properly. He explains which music notes influence and balance which chakras and a whole lot more. After reading this book, I now understand what is happening with my voice and why. There is a lot of metaphysical information found in this book as it relates to the use of sound that you will not normally find just anywhere. If you're looking for that kind of information, get the book.

If you are interested in how animals might have messages for you, check out "Animal Speak" by Ted.I have also read several other books of his on the topics of angels and spirit guides, colors, and auras. They are all well written and provide a lot of information. ... Read more

The newest title in the popular 100 Words series is an informative and entertaining resource that can help anyone be right on the money when looking for words that will make a point, seal the deal, or just keep folks listening. Chosen by the editors of the American Heritage Dictionaries, these words will appeal to anyone who wants to be a more compelling communicator—as a worker, consumer, advocate, friend, dinner companion, or even as a romantic prospect.

The book includes a colorful variety of words, including handy words of just one syllable (such as glib) and words derived from the names of famous people (such as Freudian slip and Machiavellian).
There are expressions from popular culture (Catch-22) and words that date back to classical civilization (spartan and stoic). Each word is clearly defined and shown in context with quotations from contemporary sources: magazines, newspapers, broadcast media, movies, and television. For many words, quotations from distinguished authors and speakers are also given and word histories are explained.

Like its predecessors in this successful series, 100 Words to Make You Sound Smart provides an affordable and enjoyable way to communicate more effectively. It offers the coveted gift of gab to anyone who needs to “say it right”—and to anyone who wants to sound more articulate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pedantic anachronism
I am often asked by parents to recommend a quick fix when they feel that their kids are slacking in English.I recommend this compendium because of its catchy title: if the kids get intimidated, they will not develop a neurosis. The caveat I give parents is that this is just one of the many compendiums they should acquire. This one merely gets kids started.Start from the top, as the title implies, and work your way downwards. These are the appropriate words of encouragement for the vocabulary-challenged kid.Hopefully, they will move on to more useful 1000 word or 3000 word compendiums, or to the many books written for SAT and GMAT.

I often regret the advice I gave.We all know the best way to improve vocabulary is to read more, which is not practical with the workload of students today. The best practical way is to study the set English Literature text intensely, thus scoring marks for Literature concurrently. For some paranormal reason, small books like "100 words" have a way of bouncing onto the table, while staid books remain on the shelves. This book is like a steroid which keeps calling attention to itself.

If this book shows where the horizon is, it merits 5 stars. As a vocabulary steroid, it cannot build mass quickly. For a book published in 2006, it is a pedantic anachronism.Any critical person can find at least 10 terms which should not be there, and that is a massive 10% of 100 words.Even if you knew how to use the words, your target audience might not appreciate them.I would feel embarrassed to use terms like "ennui", "Svengali" or "brogue".If I were in a University in Britain or America, I believe people would give me a mocking look which says "are you stupid or something, can you not use a simpler word?"

Why would I want to inflict words like "cloying","finagle", "dilettante" or "boondogle" when more colourful expressions for the same are readily available. Our vocabulary-challenged kid, who cannot use many of these terms on a regular basis, is going to forget them easily."Indelicate" is self-explanatory and its usage will fail to make the user sound smart.Words like "angst", "maudlin", "gregarious", "equivocate", "sycophant", "philistine" and "peevish" are slowly working themselves out of common usage. You would hardly expect to find them in syndicated articles from the New York Times, Washington Post, Economist, Newsweek, LAT, CSM and other mainstream media.I would be surprised if more than 75 of the words surfaced this year in the Huffington Post or the Guardian, or on popular TV series or movies.

If the Editors would replace about 25 distracting words, this book contains some delightful confirmations of words which should be used more often."Infinitesimal","Quintessential", "Minimalist", "Machiavellian", are staples often used by other people who want to sound smart; I need to stay abreast of them. "Untenable" is useful when you want to say your boss has a dumb idea.It is good know the cliched terms like "dichotomy", and also "Dishevelled" as news reports use Dishevelled readily on celebrities."Esoteric" is useful, but missing is "Eclectic" which is bandied about quite often in talent programmes such as "American Idol" and "America's Got Talent".And if you really need to be told about "antidote" and "waft", your vocabulary is in serious trouble.

"Non sequitur" gained prominence from a comic strip.I have no quarrel with "idyllic", "panacea", "nouveau riche", "paradox", "perfunctory" or even "cacophony", finding these familiar words in new contexts. Two illustrations of usage of your 100 top words is manifestly insufficient. Improper attempts at using these 100 words without understanding their fullest implications will clearly lead to language "faux pas" (the pronounciation of the plural is thankfully included). That assuredly will make the misuser sound stupid.

I suppose everybody has an individualised opinion of their 100 most impressive words. These 100 words look like they came off a computer analysis, rather than from the gut feeling of Editors on top of linguistic paradigms (speaking of which, "paradigm" was not included).

As a personal observation, I note that kids who attend Church regularly pick up quite an ample vocabulary from Pastors. When I meet the parents again, and they tell me they have bought a compendium of vocabulary expanding words, I sense linguistic redemption.Even half of 100 words is a good start. If they brought the book with them, I tell them which was the better half - there is an index of the 100 words in bold on the last page.

5-0 out of 5 stars good for everyone
My young professional kids fought over these at Christmas. I bought two as stocking stuffers and they were using the words to play a game to see who could speak more intellegently than the other. They had lots of fun with them. This book is very helpful and practical.

5-0 out of 5 stars 100 words to make you sound smart
I bought the book because my daughter's teacher was giving them words out of the book, however, I am a secretary and I was familiar with all the words in the book except for a couple. From what my daughter told me I thought that I would be able to learn new words from the book. Her teacher must have been using other books in addition to this one. Not quite what I expected but I would still give it a good review and it came very quickly and was as described.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for those with an advanced vocabulary.
I picked up "100 Words" at the Urban Outfitters, and I only needed 10 minutes to realize that the book is not meant to vastly increase an above-average vocabulary. This book is only useful to those possessing a sub par vocabulary. The words presented are easily defined, and most are not worth using in a sentence.

4-0 out of 5 stars Maybee I,m allreddy Smrt ¿
I was familiar with most of the words, but the format is great.
The word, a definition, an etymology, and a few excepts of its usage are included.
Each word earns respect by getting its own page.
I recommend it, especially for the price. Loaded with value.

Good seller, great transaction. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for its size!
I had not great expectations about this book because it is a pocketbook. When it arrived, I realised how small it is, but just the size, the content is great! This is not a beginners book. It's truly a very helpful and daily book. The size and contents make it ideal for taking to the road with you. The texts don't ramble on many pages, they go straight to the point. It goes from sound basics (physics) until how to position the FOH to achieve the best sound and how to build your cables. Great product!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, But Basic
This is a pretty decent overall guide to the basics of live sound. I don't regret buying it, but it's pretty simplistic and not very in-depth. But of course, it IS called "Basic Live Sound."

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Little Book
The book was much smaller than I expected but it contained a lot of really good information for someone just starting to learn about PA systems and running live sound.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Information
For a beginner this book is what you need, even if you're not a beginner too! It's always good to get back to basics and this book describes everything in easy to understand terms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
Anything that you may want to know before attempting a quiet complicated task of running live sound is in this book. The book is broken down in very detailed sections of any area that you may have questions about, so you can return to the sections whenever you might encounter a problem at a critical moment. Helpful and handy, I would suggest this book to anyone who is a musician. ... Read more

In his most recent book, "Echo of the Soul", popular author Philip Newell explored what it meant to be made in the image of God. The Hebrew scriptures and Celtic Christianity alike rejoiced that our physical selves bear the marks of the Creator whereas the Western church has tended to define humanness by its tendency to sin. This beautiful book, illustrated with Jewish manuscript throughout helps us to reclaim a lost heritage and teaches us to recognize the widsom, strength, love and presence of God through each other. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simple Beauty
This psalter has become my companion each morning these past months of summer as I pray and get ready for the day.I love to work in my garden, so this morning I prayed the Thursday morning prayer and started to hum the accompanying chant from the CD.I spent an hour working in my yard, praying the chant (all of the chants are directly from scripture) and hearing the beautiful simplicity in my head.I drove my teen to an event, and on the way back, I listened to the CD in the car. This book and CD have blessed me at a time when I have needed careful discernment. Most excellent work.I've ordered another book by Newell and accompanying CD as well as the chant/chord book for use in my church. If you like Taize and Iona, you will love this, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prayers that Touch Your Heart
I was purchasing a couple of books on Celtic spirituality and came across this one.I only bought it on a whim but am glad that I did.The daily morning and evening prayers are beautiful - full, of course, of references to the world around us, the beauty of nature, and lines and phrases that touch my heart.Anyone interested at all in Celtic spirituality will find this small book to be a wonderful addition to their daily prayers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sounds of the Eternal, a Celtic Psalter
Sounds of the Eternal: A Celtic PsalterThe prayers in this beautifully illustrated book flow gracefully in the gaelic tradition. They include prayers for each morning and evening of the week. This is a wonderful addition to your Celtic prayerbook collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mesmorizing reading
The Sound of Music Companion by Laurence Malson, Andrew Lloyd Webber should be owned by all who enjoyed the movie.

Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
This is a wonderful book for THE SOUND OF MUSIC enthusiast.Lots of great background information and photographs.Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sound of Music
Wonderful! Very complete compilation of many sources regarding the Sound of Music. Covers not only the movie, but also the stageplay, the history behind the script and music, and the history of the Von Trapps themselves. The pictures are absolutely beatiful! There are stills from the movie, from the original Broadway cast, from many Broadway revivals, as well as many behind the scenes shots. This is a must have for anybody who loves the story of the Sound of Music.

5-0 out of 5 stars A seminal Sound of Music book
Lawrence Maslon should be thanked and congratulated for offering a concise and informative Sound of Music book. Although there have been a few Sound of Music books written in the past, this book is probably the first of its kind to tell the story in a concise manner. The Hirsch book on the film and the reissued Max Wilk book on the stage show were great books in their own right, but I think this book tops them all.

Although the numerous photos are the draw of this coffee-table book, a coffee-table book should offer much more than pretty photographs. For this it certainly delivers. His meticulously researched, well-written text tells us the whole Sound of Music story from Maria's birth to the first Austrian stage production in 2005. This book covers all important stops in the history of SOM up till now, and does not dwell too long on any one time period. An added treat is the inclusion of song lyrics and commentaries on the songs, explaining how they were written and what role they played in the musical. I admit there are a few typo errors in the text, but this well-researched book is jam-packed with facts of the musical. You could literally dip your teeth into it and come out a Sound of Music junkie. I do wish there were also lyrics and commentaries for I Have Confidence, So Long, Farewell and also The Lonely Goatherd.

In short, a really great Sound of Music book that makes a splendidd addition to any Sound of Music collection, except that the print tends to be a little too small for the size of the book. Otherwise, a really wonderful book from cover to cover, and a seminal work in the entire world of this well-loved musical. I think this is a book that deserves to be in print forever. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best of the series, excellent intro to sound
We love "Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science" books. They're almost always excellent, taking an informal, explanatory but still information-rich approach to a variety of often abstract science topics. That's certainly the case with this selection. It's all about sound, running the gamut--how we make sound with our throat, hearing, sound as message carriers, even things like echolocation and decibels. It's a simple, very readable picture book, and introduces some advanced topics in a comprehensible way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have you heard about this one?
Sounds All Around by Wendy Pfeffer introduces young children to the scientific concept of sound -- how it is created, received, differently interpreted, effects us, and even how it is measured.

The book also provides many different "sound activities" or experiments that children can do alone or with classmates. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Guide to Sound Systems for Worship
I have used and recommended "Guide to Sound Systems for Worship" since it was first introduced in 1990 as a training manual for fledgling audio techs. It is clear and simple to understand. However, because of it's age, it lacks information on modern hardware and techniques.Regardless of these lacks, it deserves to be in your library and in the tool kit of all new audio techs as a fundamental reference. It continues to be a praise worthy reference for professional audio training.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
It's a great product and the service was fast. I really think this book is for people just starting out, but I learned from it too and I'm not starting out. It's written well and in the correct order to help.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still the best book available on church sound so far...
I am an acoustical and systems design consultant who specializes in the design and functional rehabilitation of worship facilities. I recently re-read this book as part of a survey of available literature to recommend to the church staff members and volunteers I routinely train in technical operations.

Simply put, virtually all of the information in this well-written book by knowledgeable authors is of a fundamental nature. The misconceptions many people have about these basic technical principles, along with various types of moral failures, are the cause of most of the bad sound we encounter in our daily lives. In my view, the absence of present-day fad products only helps to maintain focus of the book on serving the needs of the novice church sound operator. One exception is probably to be found in the area of stage monitoring, where the explosion in the availability of in-ear monitoring and personal mixing systems has revolutionized the quality of sound that can be attained by amateur musicians.A few other developments, such as high-quality sub-miniature microphones for speech and close instrument pickup, and the superior tools now available to the audio system designer for measurement and prediction, would also be worthwhile to mention in an updated edition. It is probably best not to spend too much time on such things as loudspeakers, DSP, and room acoustical devices, even though their development continues at a brisk pace, since the selection of these technologies is a design-level task.To that end, one of the ways in which this book is smarter than most on church audio is that it helps the novice to gain a sense of what is and *is not* a user-level decision or adjustment, and what tasks should be performed by audio professionals at either the technician/installer, or designer, levels. These are some of the most important concepts for any audio practitioner, facility manager, organizational leader, or performing artist to be aware of.

Apart from ephemeral changes in recording media, about the only truly out-of-date information in this book is the suggestion that monophonic, central-cluster loudspeaker systems are appropriate for music-intensive churches. For the most authoritative summary of this topic, see Jim Brown's AES preprint #5666.

Finally, this book contains a useful bibliography, although its list of manufacturers should perhaps be replaced with a list of journals and magazines, training organizations, and web resources. As it is, it is the best available starting point for the church sound operator, and should be combined with Curt Taipale's "The Heart of Technical Excellence" in order to gain the best insight available from a book on the role and needs of church technical staff and volunteers.Happy reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars New to Sound Systems in Church.
This book was excellent in covering sound systems for church and other applications. It discussed all aspects of audio operations both basic and advanced. While not a substitute for a lot of OJT and real involement, it helped me to understand how things worked and why you do things the way you do. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT Book on Recording and Producing Audio!
I'm pretty picky when it comes to buying reference books about anything. The book has to be comprehensive, and it also has to be packed with practical examples, good advice, and it needs to demonstrate a deep technical knowledge of the subject. It also has to be easy to read, understand, and apply.I bought Jay's book because of the great reviews on Amazon.com, and this book definitely lives up to the hype. The book starts by explaining what sound is and how it works. Then the book goes into how sound is captured and recorded. The next sections go into preparing for audio production and then how to actually do it on the set.The final chapters cover the many ways to get that audio into post production and how to handle it there. There is an even more comprehensive book on audio post production from Jay called "Audio Postproduction" and I'd recommend getting that one too, but if you can only afford one book on audio, THIS one is the one to have. (Jay even says so at the beginning, and after reading it I agree). Now, to be honest this doesn't go into the depths of HOW to use programs like SoundBooth or SoundtrackPro, but it does give you enough information to know WHAT to do when you get into those programs and how to set yourself up for success using them. (The main reason for this is that there are so many different platforms, hardware, and software setups that are used in audio post production that it would be ridiculous to try and cover it all at the end of one book.)There is even a section on producing your own custom sound effects using the human voice and editing, and how to make sounds like machinery, monsters, and explosions. What more do you want?

The biggest mistake that will kill your low budget film will be the quality of the audio.Get this book and you have a ton of weapons to fight that!

Best of luck on your work!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth it.
I was looking for a book that contained the usual tech details, and more importantly, balanced these with real world examples, with tried and tested solutions.

I purchased this text based on other positive reviews.

For me this book balances the tech side with useful anecdotes from real world experiences perfectly.

Well written, not too dry and good value. A really useful reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing book
This book has really shown me how little I know about audio, and how much I still have to study.

I've translated to Spanish some 60 pages of wonderful tips that I keep handy for times I encounter the situations mentioned here (all the time).

I just bought another of Rose's books "Audio Postproduction for Film and Video, Second Edition: After-the-Shoot solutions, Professional Techniques, and Cookbook Recipes to Make Your Project Sound Better (DV Expert Series)" to get a better knowledge of how to enhance my capabilities and to see how things are correctly done.

Great books!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book!
This is an outstanding book.

If you are learning about sound, this is the book to get.

I am going to buy every book Jay Rose has written.

He's an excellent, experienced author.

Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars If You're Going To Read Only One Book On Sound...
...this would have to be it. I've read a good number of books on the subject and Jay Rose's publication is by far my favorite. While a lot of sound books come across very dry, technical, and quite frankly can tend to be boring, I actually found Producing Great Sound for Film & Video to be entertaining. You can get a real sense of the author's personality while reading, in addition to his obvious wealth of experience in the area of production sound. A lot of aspiring filmmakers I know spend a lot of time studying and practicing shooting techniques, but shy away from really learning enough about sound recording. Well, absolutely nothing to be afraid of with this book. In fact I would bet that most readers will only wish they had read it sooner. ... Read more

Product Description
Since 1991, Dr. Mitchell Gaynor has been achieving remarkable results by integrating music, vocalization, breathing, and meditation techniques in his work with patients. InThe Healing Power of Sound, he presents his sound-based techniques for self-healing—techniques that anyone can use, whether faced with a life-threatening disease or simply seeking relief from the stresses of daily life.

Numerous studies have demonstrated the health benefits of music: it can lower blood pressure and heart and respiratory rates; reduce cardiac complications; increase the immune response; and boost our natural opiates. Gaynor shows how, when integrated as part of a mind-body-spirit approach to wellness, music can play a significant part in maintaining a healthy lifestyle or in healing serious disease. The Healing Power of Sound includes twelve exercises involving breathing, meditation, and "toning"—using pure vocal sound to resolve tension, release emotion, and spur the healing process—that can be used by anyone to improve health and quality of life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Adds medical credibility to ancient practice
This is an excellent book on sound healing. Dr. Gaynor is an oncologist who incorporates various music and sound healing and chanting practices into his cancer treatments with his patients. The book is clear, readable, and informative with many techniques easily practiced by the reader. The techniques are good for healing or for preventive health practices and can be added to other health programs such as massage or yoga or Reiki. They can be used for serious or life-threatening diseases in addition to any regular medical procedures, drugs, chemotherapy, radiation, etc. They can decrease stress associated with treatment and also show how vibration can assist cellular healing in any situation.

This book was a treasure that I'm happy to have found. My children love this book and so do I. I had to order another one for my classroom and my home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book for Young Kids!
I found this pop-up book at a gift shop in Clearwater Beach and brought it home to our granddaughter, who was 22 months old at the time.A month later, she can't get enough of the "seagulls," asks for it by name, and we read it 2-3 times every day. She's learning the names of unusual creatures, like the puffin and the jellyfish. Can't wait until she's ready to start learning the details about all of these wonderful animals! Now I'm looking for a different one here at Amazon! You go, Maurice Pledger!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the sounds!
I just bought this for my daughter for Christmas. She is 5 and loves ocean animals. She plans to either be an orca trainer or seal rescuer. She had picked out a different ocean creature book at SAMS Club that is intended for adults. I love this one because of the wonderful sounds and pop-ups but also because there are real scientific facts. It isn't just a pop-up book for toddlers but should make an older child happy too. I bought mine at SAMS since I was there but it would have been cheaper on Amazon.

Product Description
Hakuin Ekaku (1685–1768) is one of the most influential figures in the history of Zen. He can be considered the founder of the modern Japanese Rinzai tradition, for which he famously emphasized the importance of koan practice in awakening, and he revitalized the monastic life of his day. But his teaching was by no means limited to monastery or temple. Hakuin was the quintessential Zen master of the people, renowned for taking his teaching to all parts of society, to people in every walk of life, and his painting and calligraphy were particularly powerful vehicles for that teaching. Using traditional Buddhist images and sayings—but also themes from folklore and daily life—Hakuin created a new visual language for Zen: profound, whimsical, and unlike anything that came before.

In his long life, Hakuin created many thousands of paintings and calligraphies. This art, combined with his voluminous writings, stands as a monument to his teaching, revealing why he is the most important Zen master of the past five hundred years.

The Sound of One Hand is a study of Hakuin and his enduringly appealing art, illustrated with a wealth of examples of his work, both familiar pieces like “Three Blind Men on a Bridge” as well as lesser known masterworks. ... Read more

It is written extremely clearly and not in Zen or art speak. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and useful
Wow! Russill Paul makes this esoteric science of Nada Yoga accessible and blissful. This book is filled with explanations that make sense, and useful tools for bringing an ancient eastern science into one's daily life. The book is accompanied by a CD that has detailed instructions for the chants so you can practice using them. There are also chants with physical motions that enhance one's awareness and bring about states of peaceful, alert presence. I use this book in my personal practice, and share it with students and clients. So glad there is a Russill Paul in this world, and that he is sharing his knowledge with us.

5-0 out of 5 stars it's all vibratory

very enlightening!

5-0 out of 5 stars Yoga chanting mantras
While looking for another book on chanting mantras, I came across this one. This is a wonderful book - well researched and well written. Paul grew up in India and spent 5 years in an ashram so he not only knows the facts and the culture and beliefs but has a real feel for presenting his subject in an easy to understand manner. You don't have to know Hatha Yoga to do yoga chanting but you might want to after reading this book. And you don't have to understand every single thing he writes about before you start your own chanting.Included with the book is an instructional CD which is helpful if you're unfamiliar with the pronunciations of the hindu/sanskrit words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Om sweet Om.....
Chanting is an art - and for those of us from a Western background, it can feel a bit otherworldy or "foreign".I have always been interested in chanting and mantras but too intimidated to try it.

Russill Paul has put together a book and CD set that helps to demystify chanting and make it more accessible for all audiences - no matter what your spiritual or ethnic background. This well written book clearly explains the basics and theories behind chanting - and it provides exercises to get you started immediately.

These exercises help anyone to begin chanting in a confident manner.I am tone deaf and have no musical talent whatsoever - yet I am able now to practice mantras with a keener ear.I am already feeling the effects!(Hindu mantras are believed to help with many issues from removing obstacles, spiritual advancement and even mundane problems.)

The Yoga of Sound is a practical book which can get you on your way to a daily mantra practice.I would also recommend the books by Thomas Ashley Farrand as a supplement to this book. That being said, Paul's book seems to be more complete and I felt more inspired by it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Written, Authentic Spirituality
I was required to buy this book for a class I was taking at the university entitled "Religion and Music".My professor was Dr. Don Beck who is an expert on this topic and has produced both a published book and a cd of Hindu devotional music. The book came highly recommended from him, and now that I have read it I would wholeheartedly agree! This is a wonderful book regardless of what spiritual path you are on, and in particular if you are looking for a way to re-entergize your own practice. The book explains how one can use the power of mantra as a spiritual practice, and it is written by an author who has both a Christian and Hindu background. He thoughtfully incorporates aspects of many religious traditions to accomodate all readers, and he is thoroughly knowledgable on this subject. He writes clearly and simply, and at the same time he gets you excited about the subject matter.
Honestly, I thought this book was going to be filled with New Age fluff, but it offers genuine advice on how to practically get started with this wonderful practice of reciting mantras.I was pleasantly surprised, and I think anyone with an interest in deep religion or music will greatly enjoy this book. ...
