A simplified approach to applying the Finite Element Method to geotechnical problems

Predicting soil behavior by constitutive equations that are based on experimental findings and embodied in numerical methods, such as the finite element method, is a significant aspect of soil mechanics. Engineers are able to solve a wide range of geotechnical engineering problems, especially inherently complex ones that resist traditional analysis. Applied Soil Mechanics with ABAQUS® Applications provides civil engineering students and practitioners with a simple, basic introduction to applying the finite element method to soil mechanics problems.

Accessible to someone with little background in soil mechanics and finite element analysis, Applied Soil Mechanics with ABAQUS® Applications explains the basic concepts of soil mechanics and then prepares the reader for solving geotechnical engineering problems using both traditional engineering solutions and the more versatile, finite element solutions. Topics covered include:

  • Properties of Soil
  • Elasticity and Plasticity
  • Stresses in Soil
  • Consolidation
  • Shear Strength of Soil
  • Shallow Foundations
  • Lateral Earth Pressure and Retaining Walls
  • Piles and Pile Groups
  • Seepage

Taking a unique approach, the author describes the general soil mechanics for each topic, shows traditional applications of these principles with longhand solutions, and then presents finite element solutions for the same applications, comparing both. The book is prepared with ABAQUS® software applications to enable a range of readers to experiment firsthand with the principles described in the book (the software application files are available under "student resources" at www.wiley.com/college/helwany). By presenting both the traditional solutions alongside the FEM solutions, Applied Soil Mechanics with ABAQUS® Applications is an ideal introduction to traditional soil mechanics and a guide to alternative solutions and emergent methods.

Dr. Helwany also has an online course based on the book available at www.geomilwaukee.com.

Product Description

Pictorial Atlas of Soil and Seed Fungi: Morphologies of Cultured Fungi and Key to Species, Third Edition describes and illustrates more than 515 fungal species, including:

  • 49 oomycetous species belonging to seven genera
  • 42 zygomycetous species belonging to 12 genera
  • 52 ascomycetous species belonging to 28 genera
  • 42 basidiomycetous species belonging to 27 genera
  • 319 anamorphic (deuteromycetous or mitosporic) species belonging to 145 genera

Dr. Watanabe describes all fungi alphabetically under the orders of Oomycota, Zygomycota, Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, and Anamorphic (Deuteromycetous) fungi. For each genus, he includes type species, references, morphology, and materials. Morphologies of cultured fungi are briefly described and illustrated together with the description of the isolation sources and methods.

The book illustrates all fungi alongside morphologies and colonies of their fresh agar cultures or dried specimens, providing ready access to morphologically similar fungi for quick comparison.

Most of the fungi are isolated from soil, plant roots, and seeds, and the rest are from wood-inhabiting fruiting bodies, their spores, or the spore-like structures associated with them. They are mostly collected in Japan, but some are from the Dominican Republic, Paraguay, Switzerland, and Taiwan, R.O.C.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!
If you are looking for a current version of this textbook, this is not the version that you want!I thought I was getting a good deal on the 13th Edition as the description appears to indicate.Instead, this is a reprint of the first edition text published decades ago; useful if your a soil history buff but not particularly good if you're looking for a current textbook on the topic!!This is not the version you want!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but weak about tropical soils
I'm an agronomist. Here in Brazil, I read this book.
This book is long and has many informations.
Every agronomist must read, a book such as this.
At least in ediction that I read, this book has a big failure. This book is weak about tropical soils.
For american reality, I think this book deserves 5 stars.
Well, I live in Brazil.I'll give four stars for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Reference
This is the 13th edition of a text that has been the standard in this field for 84 years. Its durability lies in its solid information; clear presentation; and graphics that are as rich as they are numerous. It is peppered with fascinating sidebars. You can dip into it as a reference and find just what you need (assuming you have a foundation in soil science). Even after I moved on to advanced coursework in soils, I found myself referring back to this.

If you have been assigned a soils text for a class, do not go with the abridged version of this, Elements of the Nature and Properties of Soils. It is 1/2 the book for 3/4 of the price (and at discounters the books are priced identically). If you plan to continue studies in the natural sciences, you will want this unabridged version. It's indispensable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good informative book will teach you a lot about soil
I first bought this book when we bought a property with trashed-out soil. I've since grown attached to this book, which I find myself referring to. It's clearly written, well organized, and covers so much information. I really think that you can't go wrong with this book, if you want to know about soil (be warned: it doesn't really cover soil microbiology, the living aspect of soil - I'd recommend the book by Robert Tate III; the copy I have is Soil Microbiology 2nd Ed. (c) 2000)

With that said - I've gone through other books but haven't found one that I'd compare to this one. It's just really well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply excellent
The first time I ran into this book was at the public library, while serching reference material for my daughter's science project.I found the book so helpful that I checked it out again for my own use.The third time I said: "I have to have my own copy." The 13th edition is now on its way. ... Read more

Product Description
Zenobia couldn't hear for the raucous amen chorus surrounding her. The floor seemed to vibrate and the walls shake. I'm connected to Nelson Mandela? 'Speak on it!' she yelled, waving her hand and surprising herself. 'Diaspora,' she yelled. This time, a fire ignited inside her, and everything that mattered to her changed. At the crossroads of her life, Zenobia desires to explore the possibilities of her past and her future. Recently fired from her position as a public school teacher for repeated absences due to her duties as a midwife, she finds herself waiting for inspiration. Nurtured by the unconditional love of her eminently proud Grandma Jones and stirred by her family's rich and historic connection to the American Civil Rights Movement and the African nation of Liberia, Zenobia yearns to go back to her symbolic homeland and make her mark. Her passion lies in opening a women's clinic where she hopes to forge a lasting difference for African women who have been neglected. As she encounters the conditions that grew out of Liberia's strongly rooted class division and oppression, what will she discover? How will she embrace the legacy of Free Soil? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What is your Free Soil?
Free soil is a story that blends the past with the present, the old with the young, tradition with legends, the East with the West, wisdom with empowerment and reality with dreams. It is a story of a family whose love is so strong , it serves as protection and guidance for Zenobia when she attempts to answer her grandfather's unfinished work in Liberia, West Africa.Free soil is the image that provides strength for generations as they travelled the Middle Passage, endured American enslavement and looped back to Africa in the search for freedom. But the heavy baggage of centuries of oppression proves that being free is a personal, relative and undefined concept.
Diane Jordan-Grizzard weaves a story that shows how a family's history runs through the veins of its children and directs their footsteps. She connects the rebellious spirit of the Denmark Vesey era with the wise words of Grandma Jones so that they never leave Zenobia as she is faced with life's challenges in an unfamiliar land with corrupt and unanticipated values. It took being held captive within a city's boundaries for her to dream the whole dream , as her Grandmother advised, to step out of the crossroads and made clear decisions that put her on a decisive path for herfuture.
Liberia was never a place for romanticism, despite its alluring sandy beaches, abundant fruit trees and High life culture.Free Soil provides the historical backdrop for understanding the political climate of Liberia, which most travelers, including Zenobia, never regard. The "Us versus Them" theme travels the book from page 1 until the end and makes the reader question if deeply rooted hostilities can ever be erased from the minds of a people.
Diane Jordan- Grizzard shows through minute detail how Rain, when there was nothing left to hold on to, devised symbolic meaning in a handful of soil that sustained her through her life's worse trials. The reader is left in contemplation about freedom throughout the entire book.
* What is freedom?
* Is one ever free?
* What is MY free soil?
* What can I hold on to that its mere presence will provide enough sustenance to carry me through these hard times?

5-0 out of 5 stars There is a price for free soil

Free Soil is not free; there is a price that is extracted in one way or another. Diane Jordan Grizzard's novel of historical fiction tells a story of African and African American survival and triumph against the odds in America and in the African nation of Liberia. Free Soil is a compelling story that begins with Denmark Vesey and ends with Zenobia Jones. These two unlikely heroes, while centuries apart, carry the message of freedom at any cost.

Woven in between Vesey and Zenobia are the tales of two strong women of African descent--Rain, born a slave, dies a free woman on free soil in Liberia. Grandma Jones never visits Liberia, but raises Zenobia whose free soil stretches beyond the beaches of Liberia and encompasses the freedom of courage and conviction as taught to her by Grandma Jones.Zenobia's mind is her free soil.

Reading Free Soil, one starts to better understand modern day classism as well as the why and how that made Liberia ripe for turmoil. Ms. Grizzard's skillful weaving of her personal experiences in Liberia coupled with those of the fictional Zenobia leave you wanting more. I am waiting for the sequel!

Product Description
While not all metals in Soil—plant systems are inherently toxic, particularly in low concentrations, there is an increasing incidence of metal pollution from aerial fallout, spoils, wastes and agricultural amendments including sewage sludge. Toxic Metals in Soil—Plant Systems discusses the processes of trace-metal cycling in contaminated ecosystems under conditions where their concentrations become toxic through high loading rates, long-term exposure or altered environmental conditions. Other environmental and pedological concentration mechanisms are discussed, including cation exchange and anion adsorption onto different soil materials. The book is divided into two sections; the first part discusses the sources and fates of metals in ecosystems, with an up-to-date review of the processes which control metal speciation in soils, metal uptake mechanisms, and plant responses to toxic metal concentrations in soils. A clear understanding of these processes and their interactions in soil is necessary before it is possible to instigate amelioration and restoration programmes for metal-contaminated land. In the second part of the book, a selection of case studies are presented which discuss metal toxicities and metal cycling in a range of different ecosystems, including managed agricultural systems, deciduous woodland, upland heather moorland, and tropical wetlands. In these studies a number of current issues are addressed, including the setting of toxicity thresholds for safe sewage sludge application to agricultural land, the accumulation of soil metals over time in aerially impacted systems, and metal transfers between ecosystem compartments, which are of particular concern in food crops. Providing an integrated view of toxic metals both in the soil and associated growing plants, this book covers a wide range of topics including agriculture, soil science, ecology and forestry and will be of use to researchers and environmental consultants working in these fields. ... Product Description

The fundamental premise of this monograph is that transparent synthetic materials with geotechnical properties similar to those of natural soils can be used to study 3D deformation and flow problems in natural soils. Transparent soils can be made by matching the refractive index of synthetic soil materials and the pore fluid. This monographs presents the geotechnical behaviour of several families of transparent soils that can be combined to meet model-test requirements, in terms of strength, deformation, or permeability.

"Modelling with Transparent Soils" demonstrates how an optical system consisting of a laser light, a CCD camera, a frame grabber, and a PC can be used to measure spatial deformations in transparent soil models non-intrusively. Transparent soil models are sliced optically using a laser light sheet. A distinctive speckle pattern is generated by the interaction of the laser light and transparent soil. A 2D deformation field is obtained from two speckle images by using an image processing technique named adaptive cross-correlation, which is an advanced form of the digital image cross-correlation (DIC) algorithm that utilizes both window sizing and window shifting methods. The monograph demonstrates that comparison of 2D deformation fields between transparent soil and natural soil showed that the results were comparable in almost every aspect. Three dimensional fields can be produced by combining multiple 2D fields in Matlab.

Multiphase flow and surfactant flushing tests were also simulated using a layered transparent soil systems and several contaminants.  The developed technology allows for visualizing the contamination concentration and evaluating the performance of remediation  technologies in bench scale model tests.

Product Description
It is 10 years since publication of the first edition of soils of the past. In that time the subject of paleopedology has grown rapidly, and established itself within the mainstream of geological research.

Ancient soils contain vital mineralogical, geochemical, textural, and paleontological information about the continental environments in which they formed. Advances in isotope geochemistry and sequence-stratigraphic models allow ever more detailed reconstructions of environmental change from paleosols, and new insights into such diverse topics as atmospheric chemistry, global change, palaeoecology, geobiology and mass extinction.

This fully updated second edition of Soils of the Past describes the main types of ancient soil, procedures for their recognition and study, their classification and, most significantly, a wide array of examples of how paleosols have been used for paleoenvironmental reconstruction.

Soils of the past is written for advanced undergraduates studying paleopedology as part of a degree in geology, environmental science, or physical geography, and for interested professional earth scientists. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars SMILINGLY bad translation WTF :)
I haven't finished the book yet, but one thing is DRIVING ME INSANE.It is the fault of whatever moron translated this book.

Have you ever read a translated book, and some weird quirk of the translator stands out and practically ruins the experience?Well, it's happening to me with this book and it is so FUNNY I just wanted to warn people.

Whoever translated from Hamsun's original repeatedly and unceasingly uses the word "smilingly".As in, "he added smilingly", "She asks me smilingly", "answered Coldevin smilingly".

Now, I don't know if that even is a word, and the first time I read it I thought it was cute, but then it started occurring every few pages!I mean, the guy must just associate some common word in Norwegian with the very UNCOMMON "smilingly" in English! He doesn't stop to think that in English, running across the word smilingly on every friggin' page is WEIRD.It has gotten so that now I am just cringing as I read along, waiting for him to use it again.

Anyway, just a warning!"Beware!", he said smilingly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably Hamsun's most decadent and failed book
The book centres on a bohemian circle of friends and artists in their 30's in Oslo around the year 1900. The book is very different compared to the other Hamsun books, which normally centre on rural themes, where this all takes place in Oslo and in urban surroundings. I really can't emphasize enough how untypical this book is of Hamsun, and if it weren't for a few funny dialogues here and there, I wouldn't have believed it was. The endless theme of infidelity, economic manipulations, money lending and decadent artists seemed to go on forever. I can't really say anything nice about this book, and it's very strange that it's written by the "right-wing" anti-modern conservative Hamsun. I guess he didn't always have to agree with what he wrote. A book you can safely avoid, but don't throw out the baby with the washing-water! Hamsun is Norway's greatest author, so please do check out some of the other magnificent books from this Norwegian "right-wing" radical conservative.

(I read a different edition)

(PS: I accidentally pushed "5 stars" instead of "1 star", as I intended. The book is awful, not great :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars an all time great...
To many hamsun readers this one will seem to be quite a departure for Hamsun, as it is an urban tale centering around a bohemian clique, rather than the usual tale of the Norwegian peasantry. As I know only those that are already Hamsun fans will ever read this, let it suffice to say that this book is as good as any of his works (even Pan), so hurry up and get a copy... ... Read more

This is a fairly turse coverage of soil physics that underly hydrology in both saturated and vadose zones. This is not the easiest read available, yet I and many at the U of M trust it as a good reference as we use hydrologic models. The presented theoretical framework extends to transport of chemicals that partition among liquid, gas, and sorbed states in which decay rates and mobility differ. Many books don't.

If you want applied real world situations to illustrate the utility of these concepts or an expensive reference of coefficient values this book will not serve.Aside from typos in 1 or 2 equations, this book has been accurate. My course of study did not get beyond chapter six. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas
This book presents the core concepts of the tractor method of raising chickens or other poultry. For Lee, chicken "tractors" are small moveable pens, used to confine chickens to a specific range. The pens are moved frequently, generally every day or every other day, so that the chickens always have fresh grass and bugs to peck at.The cages protect the birds from predators and provide shelter from the sun and rain. They also ensure that no plot of land receives too much manure or is grazed too heavily.(Lee points out that when chickens are raised in traditional chicken runs, their excrement can be so heavy that the nitrogen content can become so toxic that nothing will grow on the soil; as a result, the birds then don't have access to greens.)But the book isn't only about chickens--it presents an entire agricultural plan, in which the chickens are one part of the farm ecosystem, consuming greens, and providing fertilizer, which then becomes the input for organic garden plots.Lee also provides sample business plans for using poultry grown in tractors to provide a modest income that can cover meat costs for a family, pay property taxes, or even provide cash for general living expenses. The book includes a list of sources for further reading, a resource guide, and index.

Lee includes plans for several chicken tractors of varying capacity in the book. I haven't been able to try them myself yet, but several neighbors have adopted the chicken tractor method of poultry raising, and they all endorse it unreservedly. They say it is much more humane and healthier for the chickens than cage methods. It is safer for the birds and easier for their caregivers than free range methods. It also makes more sense for soil fertility and requires less work tossing around chicken manure than one finds with the traditional chicken pen.If and when I get chickens, this is clearly the way to go.At the end of the book, Lee mentions that the tractor method would also work for other birds, such as turkeys or quails, but unfortunately, he does not provide suggested dimensions of tractors for these birds. ... Product Description
This long-out-of-print classic showed that soil fertilitywas directly linked to human and animal disease. Almost a half-centuryago, Andr Voisin had already grasped the importance of thesubterranean world. He mapped the elements of the soil and theireffects on plants, and ultimately, animal and human life as well. Hesaw the hidden danger in oversimplified fertilization practices andthe use of toxic chemicals that ignore the delicate balance of traceminerals and nutrients in the soil.

This is not, however, merely a persuasive testament to the linkbetween soil, human and animal health. It is also essential readingfor anyone committed to increasing both the quality and theprofitability of their pastures. While grass and livestock farmerswill benefit most from the wealth of information on rotationmanagement and fertilization practices, there is much in this book foranyone who makes a living from the earth.

With a volume of meticulously researched information, Voisin issues acall to agricultural scientists, veterinarians, dietitians andintelligent farmers to stand up and acknowledge the responsibilitiesthey bear in the matter of public health. He writes as well to thealarmed consumer of agricultural products, hoping to spread theknowledge of the possibilities of protective medicinepart of aconcerted attempt to remove the causes of ill health, disease and, inparticular, cancer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars More than you wanted to know, unless you hate going to the Dr.
This is a 1 in 1000 book.

You can read 1000 books similar before you find one this good.

Add nutrients to your soil, don't take vitamins.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but outdated about cancer
The book has some fascinating information about how the soil affects the nutritional value of food and the diseases in farm animals and humans that can be created by out of balance soil or farming practices.I'm pretty sure it mentioned a cause of sheep scrapie, kin to the deer problem affecting some states in the US, but it wasn't in the index & I couldn't find it later. The stuff about cancer seems pretty out dated and not of much use to someone interested in cancer specifically.Still, I think it's definately worth reading, especially if you like agroparanoia. ... Great book, very concise.Step by step way of calculating GW problems.Must have for GW and environmental Engineers

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical Design Calculations for Groundwater and Soil
The concepts covered in this text are fairly well explained.Chapter 2 focuses on characterization and remedial investigation. This section can be useful for those who do UST investigations and soil removal. Here the author runs through the steps used to determine mass and volume of soil excavated from a tank pit and mass and concentration of excavated soil. There are also many useful subsections describing the procedure for determining mass and mole fractions of gasoline components, contamination in the vadose zone, etc..The author also presents calculations for determining well volume for groundwater sampling.Chapter three covers plume migration in groundwater and soil and the author covers such topics as transmissivity, specific yield and storativity. These topics are not covered in great detail.Aquifer tests are covered and some simple examples are used demonstrating the Theis Method, Cooper-Jacob Straight Line method and Distance-Drawdown method. Not a lot of detail in these sections.Remaining chapters cover mass balance, vadose zone and soil remediation, groundwater remediation and VOC air treatment.Overall a good reference text with a great deal of applicable information.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have For All Rush County Researchers
This book not only helps the part-time genealogist, but also gives thepurpose of the free persons of color's move to this territory. It help thedescendents of these people (such as myself) put a personality on the manynames of people we've come to know and have pictures for.

It has spurredmy family & I on to take the trip from NJ to IN to attend the 2000Beech Homecoming & look forward to the Roberts Homcoming in 2001. Igreatfully appreciate Stephen A. Vincent's labors.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Beech and Roberts Communities
The Beech and Roberts farming communities were composed of free blacks who came from North Carolina in the 1820s and 30s.They located near Quakers because they knew they would receive kindness and respect from them as wellas fair dealings. The communities grew and prospered and an emphasis wasplaced upon education and spiritual development. Eventually, thesettlements began to decline and farmers began to sell their land. Gradually, all the inhabitants moved away. Both communities left behind aproud heritage and continue to hold homecomings once a year.

(I chose thebook because I live in Carthage, close to the site of the Beech Settlementand have an interest in its history.)I reviewed the book on April 11 atthe Hancock County Library in Greenfield, Indiana.Following the review, the book club members cameto my home. From there, our group of eighteentook a "field trip" out to the Beech.Accompanying us was GladysBoatright, the granddaughter of Eli Archey who is pictured on the front of"Southern Seed, Northern Soil." We all enjoyed the book very muchand enjoyed learning of the two fine communities the Beech and Robertssettlements. ... Read more

Product Description
This book on "SOIL" has been written in a very simple and straightforward manner, which is easy to understand by anyone who may have a simple academic background of general science. This book contains the basic properties of soil, which have been distinctly described under separate chapters, which include an Introduction, Physical, Chemical, Mineralogical, and its Biological properties. In addition, a comprehensive descriptive picture of Soil has been presented in the following chapter of "Soil survey and classification " which brings out the entire philosophy of soil and its classification methodology in a very precise manner. It is based on the Classification System developed in the United States of America and is agreed upon by the Soil Scientists of the most parts of the world. This is an open system and is very viable, because it has a tremendous scope of improvements in future. This is essential when one considers that soil itself is a very dynamic system in nature. Finally the book ends with an insight for Crop production based on its variable properties followed by its last chapter "Soil Care". This last chapter aims at the sustainability and productivity of our soil resources for a longer period of time. This is possible only when we consider all aspects of soil's properties and focus on its individuality, as it exists at a particular location and time. The purpose of this book is to bring awareness in the minds of people of the world that soil is a living identity and must be used with utmost care. Based on my thirty-eight years of prolonged learning which includes all the theories and the practical aspects of Soil I must say, "It is the only natural gift on which all kinds of living things have been depended upon and will continue to depend in future too." So each of us has to remain obliged towards this, which is always under our feet. ... Read more
