Product Description
Since the classic contributions of Weber and Durkheim, the sociology of law has raised key questions on the place of law in society. Drawing together both theoretical and empirical themes, Mathieu Deflem reviews the field's major accomplishments and reveals the value of the multiple ways in which sociologists study the social structures and processes of law. He discusses both historical and contemporary issues, from early theoretical foundations and the work of Weber and Durkheim, through the contribution of sociological jurisprudence, to the development of modern perspectives to clarify how sociologists study law. Chapters also look at the role of law in relation to the economy, politics, culture, and the legal profession; and aspects of law enforcement and the globalization of law. This book will appeal to scholars and students of the sociology of law, jurisprudence, social and political theory, and social and political philosophy. ... Read more

Product Description

In this volume, Patricia Gumport and other leading scholars examine the sociology of higher education as it has evolved since the publication of Burton Clark's foundational article in 1973. They trace diverse conceptual and empirical developments along several major lines of specialization and analyze the ways in which wider societal and institutional changes in higher education have influenced this vital field of study.

In her own chapters, Gumport identifies the factors that constrain or facilitate the field's development, including different intellectual legacies and professional contexts for faculty in sociology and in education. She also considers prospects for the future legitimacy and vitality of the field.

Featuring extensive reviews of the literature, this volume will be invaluable for scholars and students of sociology and higher education.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sociology of Religion
The book arrived in wonderful shape and much more quickly than expected.I found a brand new copy at Amazon cheaper than the used copy at my college bookstore!

5-0 out of 5 stars great textbook
I used this book for an introductory religion course "religion and culture." I found the book very "student-friendly" with examples and ideas relevant to the lives of students. The prose of the text is well-written,and the structure is logical. The professor can jump around at will or follow the authors' order. Overall, this book is a superb core text for introductory religious studies or sociology of religion courses.
I would also consider using it as a supplemental text in a philosophy of religion course, as it would provide a good empirical reference to the heady theoretical emphasis in such a course. I hope this fine book stays in print. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars discusses globalisation's effects
This recent book is the latest in Massey's long running series. Just over 20% of the selections here are new; ie. not in the 4th edition. Massey gives emphasis on topics that have garnered recent broad interest.

Especially globalisation. We see speculations on the societal repercussions of this, where the societies are those of the developed countries. Equally interesting would also be investigations of the rippling effects on the developing countries that are benefiting from outsourcing. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
I bought this book as a requirement for my class and found this book is useless without the Code to download the software.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent presentation from a statistical perspective
My copy of the CD did not explode (as it did for a previous reviewer), but I found this book very educational based purely on the statistical rather than on stories about sociology itself. This is a GREAT book for instructors to use for night classes in undergraduate studies where there isn't a lot of time for lecture, because this book, thru it's compelling examples, gives the students all the information they will ever need on how statistics tell the truth (and lie) about the state of the world and the people living in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful until it explodes!
This workbook is completely interactive.Students who have never before been exposed to statistics can get a real sense of what stats are and how they are used.If you are looking for a way to get students "ready" to deal with statistical math concepts, or to take the social sciences seriously, this could be it.Things to watch out for:some editing problems that make a few (only in one chapter) of the workbook questions unusable. Also, the CD I had was produced in such a manner that after repeated use it "fragmented" --that is, exploded inside my CD drive into about a zillion pieces.Dust.It was great before it exploded. ... Is it true that religion is weakening in modern times or are we facing religious resurgence? What is fundamentalism? How does it emerge and grow? Which role does religion play in ethnic and national conflicts? Is religion a fundamental driving force or do political leaders use religion for their own purposes? Do all religions oppress women? These are some of the questions addressed in this book. "An Introduction to the Sociology of Religion" provides an overview of sociological theories of contemporary religious life. Some chapters are organized according to topic. Other chapters offer brief presentations of classical and contemporary sociologists from Karl Marx to Zygmunt Bauman and their perspectives on social life, including religion. Editorial Review

Product Description
Steve Edgell has written an up-to-date, comprehensive guide to the sociology of every type of work: paid and unpaid, standard and non-standard, under- and unemployment. Sweeping in its historical reach and rigorous in its analysis of key issues of work, this book charts the rise of `work' from the first human societies and provides nuanced understanding of the issues at stake in standard, non-standard, unpaid and voluntary work. Drawing on classic and contemporary theorists, the author:

- covers key issues regarding paid work: alienation, post-industrial society, network enterprises in the informational society, flexibility, Fordism, McDonaldization, the destandardization of work, and the social impact of unemployment and underemployment;

- discusses key issues regarding non-paid work: domestic work as `work', the impact of technology, the impact of feminism, feminization and globalization;

- offers a historical perspective of work and gender.

'The overall sweep of the book – from pre-capitalist/industrial to post-globalism is attractive and challenging. The extension of the study of work beyond paid office/factory work is to be welcomed. In short this book will make a wise and welcomed addition to the existing range of sociological texts.' - Professor Huw Beynon, Director School of Social Sciences, Cardiff University

'Stephen Edgell's Sociology of Work is a reliable, comprehensive and accessible text. He has taken a number of central themes in this field and engaged with the relevant literature and debates in a thoughtful and authoritative way. The comparative and historical treatment of the topics offers an illuminating perspective on the contemporary world of work. Students will find this book to be an invaluable resource. I predict that their copies will become much thumbed and annotated!' - John Eldridge, Emeritus Professor of Sociology, University of Glasgow.

5-0 out of 5 stars very happy
The book came in perfect condition!We are very happy and saved a lot of money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very blah
This book contains just enough usable articles to make it through a 101 Sociology class, but that's about all.I don't think I would use it again, as it's hard to justify making students pay the price tag.On the downside, the articles are very poorly organized, and it often requires a stretch of imagination to discover why the editor placed a certain article under one category heading and not another.All the articles on education, for example, could have been in the section about race.The section on socialization is particularly poor, as the articles together do not really add to what would be covered in a typical survey course on that topic.They all could have been placed elsewhere in the book or just left out.This book is also very light on classical sociology, with just one excerpt each from Marx and Weber and a smattering of later standards.The excerpts themselves can be very choppy, especially at the end when they often trail off without emphasizing any particular conclusion -- a problem I noted in earlier versions of this book that does not seem to have been improved.Finally, there are many articles and excerpts included here that are simply not from the field of sociology and they are very hit or miss.The journalistic accounts about social issues may seem like valuable reading, but they are more useful for a high school sociology or current events course than for a college-level introduction to the discipline.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent text
Used this book for my Sociology 101 class. Some of the articles were good and thought provoking, others predictable and booring. I'd say for a textbook, it is better than average.

Product Description
Thoroughly revised and fully updated, the second edition of Sarah Nettleton's book will prove invaluable to anyone looking for a clear and accessible introduction to key contemporary debates within the sociology of health and illness. The book builds on the first edition's success, integrating the core tenets of traditional medical sociology with some fresh insights from the current literature. New material is found throughout , including discussions of the new genetics, food and eating, e-health, the MMR debate, embryo stem cell research, recent approaches to health inequalities, and the health implications of the information age. Carefully annotated suggested further readings have been added to each chapter, to help extend students' learning and thinking.

The book aims to provide students with a thorough grounding in the area of the sociology of health and illness. As such it covers a diversity of topics and draws on a wide range of analytic approaches. The text spans issues such as the social construction of medical knowledge, the analysis of lay health knowledge and beliefs, concepts of lifestyles and risk, the experience of illness and the sociology of the body. It also explores matters which are central to health policy, such as professional-patient relationships, health inequalities and the changing nature of health care work. A central theme which runs throughout the book is that we are moving towards a new paradigm of health and health care, one in which people are no longer passive recipients of treatment when they are ill, but are active participants in the maintenance of their own health. This is reflected in contemporary health policy which emphasizes health promotion, community health care and consumerism.

The book is written primarily for students of thte social sciences who opt to study the field of health and illness in greater depth, but will also appeal to students taking vocational degrees requiring a sociological grounding in the area. ... Read more
