5-0 out of 5 stars product and delivery
I was very pleased with my purchase.I ordered the book for about 1/10th of what the bookstores sell them for.It was brand new in perfect condition and I received it in a couple of days without paying a ridiculous shipping fee.I would recommend buying all college text books this way.

This book was in spectacular shape. The price was great and it arrived in a timely manner. I would gladly do business with this seller again!

1-0 out of 5 stars Never got book
I never received this book after numerous times of me contacting the seller thru email and never got a response. I finally decided to contact A-Z to file a claim and then the seller of the book finally contacts me to see if I want the book. Well I had already bought a book from the local bookstore after a month of waiting for my book.
I will never buy from this user again!!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars The reach is so broad, some of the goals slip through their fingers
The attempted reach of this book is so great; nearly every goal appears to slip through their fingers. The first section of the book (577 pages) is roughly equivalent to a book in finite mathematics and the second (approximately 400 pages) to a book in business calculus. With such a broad mathematical swath being applied, the effectiveness is limited. The college where I teach mathematics and computer science recently added a course in basic mathematical modeling, so I examined this book as a possible text. I cannot envision any circumstances where this book will satisfy our needs for the reasons listed above. While the coverage is wide and to some depth, there is so much that only a fraction of the material could be covered in a semester.
The chapter headings are:

*) Algebraic concepts
*) Linear equations and functions
*) Quadratic and other special functions
*) Matrices
*) Inequalities and linear programming
*) Exponential and logarithmic functions
*) Mathematics of finance
*) Introduction to probability
*) Further topics in probability; data description
*) Derivatives
*) Applications of derivatives
*) Derivatives continued
*) Indefinite integrals
*) Definite integrals; techniques of integration
*) Functions of two or more variables

To go from the basics of algebra all the way to partial differential equations in one book is quite a feat, certainly something that cannot be done in a single semester. Therefore, this is a book that would only be suitable for a two-semester course sequence. The only such sequence that I can see where this book would be appropriate is one covering "Mathematics for business." The chapter on the mathematics of finance and the majority of the application examples being from business and economics would almost force this to be the only possible area of application.

Product Description

Culture has returned to the poverty research agenda.

Over the past decade, sociologists, demographers, and even economists have begun asking questions about the role of culture in many aspects of poverty, at times even explaining the behavior of low-income populations in reference to cultural factors. Unlike their predecessors, contemporary researchers rarely claim that culture will sustain itself for multiple generations regardless of structural changes, and they almost never use the term “pathology,” which implied in an earlier era that people would cease to be poor if they changed their culture. The new generation of scholars conceives of culture in substantially different ways.

In this latest issue of the ANNALS, readers are treated to thought-provoking articles that attempt to bridge the gap between poverty and culture scholarship, highlighting new trends in poverty research.

This volume is vital reading, not only for sociologists but also for researchers across the social sciences as a whole.

This book was sent in great condition and I received it in an acceptable amount of time. Thanks for the great service!

5-0 out of 5 stars Calculus Book
I am very pleased with the company that I bought this book from. They had the description of the book and when I received the book it was in the exact condition that they had stated. Also, they gave me a estimated arrival date and it actually came 3 days early so that was great. I will definately buy books from this company again. This was my first experience buying a book from Amazon and I am very pleased with everything.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inexcusable
This is easily one of the worst textbooks I've ever read, which makes my current class of calculus infinitely more difficult as a result. I've never taken calculus before, but I've enjoyed other math classes due to the easy, accessible texts and a good teacher to complement them. The book is simply not user-friendly to anyone outside of those who have taken calculus in some form beforehand, or even those who have.

The chapter examples are predominantly where most of the action goes down, and the authors often use simple examples (never mind giving explanations on how they solved the problem, often my classmates and I had to take too much time to diagnose what the author did from one step to the next due to a lack of a step-by-step process), and not only that, but they save the easy stuff for themselves to explain away and save the headachers that need explaining for the reader! Even my professor from time to time had to take too much classtime to try and reason out the author's muddled intentions rather than teaching the planned lesson.

In short, this was an easy paycheck to some of the laziest group of Ph.Ds I'll ever see.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical Calculus
Having returned to school for another degree, I was forced to take yet another calculus class or write a paper about calculus so, I figured a little review never hurt and I'd get a good grade.

I have decided that out of all of the calculus, differential equations, etc., that I took in college getting that engineering degree, I like this book the best.Good examples of practical applications for economics and social sciences without a lot of "prove thats..."

My only beef would be for first time calculus students who are weak in algebra as some of the problems lack examples within the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
Book in VERY good condition, nothing written on the inside and no damages on the outside...EXTREMELY happy. ... Read more

Product Description

Ethnography in Social Science Practice explores ethnography’s increasing use across the social sciences, beyond its traditional bases in social anthropology and sociology. It explores the disciplinary roots of ethnographic research within social anthropology, and contextualizes it within both field and disciplinary settings.

The book is of two parts: Part one places ethnography as a methodology in its historical, ethical and disciplinary context, and also discusses the increasing popularity of ethnography across the social sciences. Part two explores the stages of ethnographic research via a selection of multidisciplinary case studies. A number of key questions are explored:

  • What exactly is ethnographic research and what makes it different from other qualitative approaches?
  • Why did ethnography emerge within one social science discipline and not others?
  • Why did its adoption across the social sciences prove problematic?
  • What are the methodological advantages and disadvantages of doing ethnographic research?
  • Why are ethnographers so concerned by issues of ethics, politics, representation and power?
  • What does ethnography look like within different social science disciplines?

The book is aimed at social science students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and each chapter has pedagogic features, including reflective activities and suggested further readings for students.

4-0 out of 5 stars Necessary, with mitigation
Dr. Malina's commentary on the Johanine gospel is indispensable. Face it, nobody is engaging the New Testament in this way, his commentaries are powerful and are ushering in a new era of Biblical scholarship. As to not engaging text criticism, Malina explicitly states in the introduction that the commentary will not do it and that the commentary is supplemental to other good commentaries that do engage the technicalities of the text. As for original meaning of the text, look no farther, you have found your commentary. I have one complaint about this book: the characterization of the Johanine writer as a community astral seer is dubious. I don't think Malina makes any attempt to explain or elaborate why this is the case, however it taints the commentary very little as it is only important to the prologue of John.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but...
As I said on the review of the Synoptics: I enjoyed the book that, with its companion "on the synoptic gospels", form a source of "inside" information that otherwise I woudln't have access to.The book is structure according to a regular commentary with additional "notes" or "reading scenarious."Unfortunately, there are no footnotes; therefore, when they tell you abuot a particular custom of that time, there is no direct reference to a primary source. Therefore, you have to take their words for it. There is a bibliography, which can help a bit, but still you're left with no way to further a specific point.

2-0 out of 5 stars Less than Standard.
This commentary on the fourth gospel by Malina & Rohrbaugh could by used by the critical reader for some insights into the author's social setting. Yet this method should be allowed only so much of a foothold on acommentary and should not dominate the landscape. Into this trap haveMolina & Rohrbaugh fallen into.

Moreover, there is virtually noTextual critical questions addressed at all. No interaction with opposingcommentaries. Narrative and theology are barely given weight. And finally, the historio-religious method permeates Malina & Rohrbaugh'sconclusions time and again.

Malina & Rohrbaugh's all to frequentreconstructions are torturous and hard to follow. Somehow it seems that asthe commentary progresses verse-by-verse M&R get farther and fartherfrom John's intended meaning.

A much better critical read of the fourthgospel remains Herman Ridderbos, or Rudolf Schnackenburg.

R.E Aguirre <><

5-0 out of 5 stars Indespensible tool for studying the Gospel of John
Bruce Malina and Richard Rohrbaugh show that the Christian community of John's Gospel was an "anti-society", that is, a consciously alternative society consisting of exiles, rebels, or ostracized deviants.(They note parallel examples of anti-societies, such as reform-schoolstudents in Poland, members of the underworld in India, and vagabonds inElizabethan England.)As such, it had developed its own"anti-language", that is, a resistance language used to maintainits highly sectarian religious reality. This accounts for many of thestrange expressions found in the gospel. For instance, the Christians ofthis community referred to all outsiders as people of "thisworld".They believed that all members of wider society -- especially"the Jews" -- lay outside the scope of redemption and werecompletely beyond the pale.Like all anti-societies, they overlexicalizedtheir language, which basically means that they used redundant euphemisms. Thus, "believing into Jesus", "abiding in him","loving him", "keeping his word", "receivinghim", "having him", and "seeing him" all meant thesame thing.Likewise, "bread", "light","door", life", "way", and "vine" wereall redundant metaphors for Jesus himself. This anti-language served tomaintain inner solidarity in the face of pressures (or perhaps evenpersecutions) from wider society.Unlike the religious language found inthe Synoptic Gospels or Paul's letters, John's language would have beenmeaningless in the context of wider Judeo-Christian society ("thisworld").

Understanding this social background is crucial forinterpreting the gospel as a whole and controversial passages inparticular.........................

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine Work
Dr. Malina asked me to read and review an early form of this book a few years back, of which I did not realize at the time was the first reading of this fine work.As a personal friend and past student of Dr. Malina, I cansay with full sincerity that Dr. Malina's work is some of the mostunder-acknowledged scholarly writing of our time in this area of study. This fine volume carries on the Malina tradition of scholarly excellence inchasing down and capturing with pure mind-blowing enlightenment themulti-dimensional, historical truth behind the creation and content ofJohn. This volume is an absolute necessity for anyone even halfwayattempting to respectfully comprehend John in its rightful, historicalcontext. This book is so wonderfully researched and executed that I canhardly recommend it enough.I urge anyone who has reached this review toorder this book and all others by Dr. Malina for an extremely interestingand educational look at the world of Jesus, and furthermore, a look at howmuch the modern Church has distorted and twisted hardcore Biblical truth(for one of thousands of examples, check out Dr. Malina's 1995 book onRevelation and compare it to the feeble and cheap trash put out byjokesters and ill-educated fundamentalists such as Hal Lindsey). You willnever look at John the same after reading this book, but I promise yourlife will be changed through the deep and meaningful questioning this andother Malina volumes will bring about.Do yourself and Biblicalscholarship a favor and read this great book and pass the word on. ... Product Description

Students and researchers all write under pressure, and those pressures—most lamentably, the desire to impress your audience rather than to communicate with them—often lead to pretentious prose, academic posturing, and, not infrequently, writer’s block.

Sociologist Howard S. Becker has written the classic book on how to conquer these pressures and simply write. First published nearly twenty years ago, Writing for Social Scientists has become a lifesaver for writers in all fields, from beginning students to published authors. Becker’s message is clear: in order to learn how to write, take a deep breath and then begin writing. Revise. Repeat.

It is not always an easy process, as Becker wryly relates. Decades of teaching, researching, and writing have given him plenty of material, and Becker neatly exposes the foibles of academia and its “publish or perish” atmosphere. Wordiness, the passive voice, inserting a “the way in which” when a simple “how” will do—all these mechanisms are a part of the social structure of academic writing. By shrugging off such impediments—or at the very least, putting them aside for a few hours—we can reform our work habits and start writing lucidly without worrying about grades, peer approval, or the “literature.”

In this new edition, Becker takes account of major changes in the computer tools available to writers today, and also substantially expands his analysis of how academic institutions create problems for them. As competition in academia grows increasingly heated, Writing for Social Scientists will provide solace to a new generation of frazzled, would-be writers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Writing for All Scientists
Howard S. Becker, the author of "Writing for Social Scientists: How to Start and Finish Your Thesis, Book, or Article", is a social scientist. Of course, no respectable scientist, social or non-social, would dare generalizing to other fields of knowledge the findings laboriously made in his own field. So, Becker conservatively addresses his book just to "social scientists". Writing is, however, an essential aptitude for any scientist. In fact, it is no less crucial to the survival of the scientist, as a scientist, than his or her own aptitudes to read or think logically. So, what Becker writes in his book is just as important to social scientists as it is to any other kind of scientist. Quite paradoxically, most scientists initiate and develop their scientific careers without devoting a single minute of their time to specifically learning how to write. Anyone would agree that it is impossible to play good tennis without proper training, and whoever wished to become a professional tennis player by just playing along would very likely be regarded as downright naive. This is, however, what most scientists do when it comes to writing. Becker's book does not fall in the category of the so called "how-to" books. It is, rather, a personal reflection written in a very entertaining and conversational style by an academic who addresses his fellow academics, not from the top of a pulpit, but from the cultural standpoint of the beliefs, traditions, aspirations and rites of their common academic life. It covers, in this way, a remarkably diverse collection of central aspects of scientific writing, such as the crucial role of editing and rewriting (and rewriting, and rewriting), the fear of scorn, the encounters with writer's block, or the urge to produce pompous and obscure texts. As the book progresses, the readers notice that they are being faced with the main fallacies of traditional scientific writing and that they are being helped to build their own opinion on how these fallacies can be properly handled. One such fallacy resides in the belief that there is only one right way of putting things down on paper. In fact, most less experienced writers tend to believe that to write well is to get the text right the first time. So, they stumble in the beginning of their text, unsuccessfully trying to work out the best beginning (and believing that, if they don't, they will not be able to proceed). Often, they also stumble when trying in vain to get the best plan for their text. Indeed, they seem to ignore that a significant part of our knowledge is built through experimentation, and that experimentation begins inside our own minds, as we tentatively combine ideas and try to make sense out of them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Author, Great Work
Howard Becker is indispensable to any student of the social sciences. This book, which provides insight into how to work efficiently as a scholar in the discipline, is an excellent resource. Read it while you're writing so you don't lose sight of the goal of finishing your work.

Writing for Social Scientists: How to Start and Finish Your Thesis, Book, or Article: Second Edition (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but the second edition has few changes
I bought the first edition of this book about 20 years ago and found it very helpful.I long ago misplaced my copy and so was happy to order the new second edition. On reading the book again, I found Becker's advice to be as good as I remembered, but I was disappointed that he had made so few changes in the "second edition."Essentially, the first edition has been reprinted verbatim--even typos weren't corrected--with a relatively few pages of additional material added to the last two chapters.Chapter 9 now contains Becker's general thoughts on recent software that he considers useful to writers. This discussion would have been more helpful if he had been willing to mention specific programs.I guess he decided not to either to avoid giving free advertising or to avoid dating the discussion. The last chapter gives some interesting, if brief, observations on the place of writing in modern academic life.

In short, if you already have the first edition, there's not much point in buying the second edition. If, on the other hand, you haven't encountered this book before and you would like some useful tips on academic writing, it's well worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Becker on Writing
This was the best $10 I've ever invested. The book is wonderful; clear and concise. It's made a big difference with my papers through understanding that writing is a process that mostly begins with angst, that there are a few quick tricks that can make any paper much better and that big words in scientific papers don't make the paper scientific (or readable).BUY THE BOOK!!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Math For Managerial life

This is the kind of book I have been looking for!It is great and deliverly was within time.Presented in away that is easy to read and understand without a teacher.Next time I need a book, I know where to go.

Keep up the good work.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Terrible Book, Not Worth the Money
Even at Amazon's $160.00, so-called deal, this book is not worth the money. Why colleges and universities even consider to use this text is beyond me.The chapters come in non sequitur groups of 2 and 3.For a book focusing on current applied mathematical problems, it is a travesty that no bibliography or references pages exist! This gives me the impression that many if not all of the examples and exercises in the book are fabricated.

Any single-semester university course centered around this textbook will likely come across as an extremely low-brow course on finance (fixed and continuous interest rates) and optimization (simplex method) or a low-brow course on probability. In either event, there are far more suitable texts for such classes. It is plain that the topics are hardly covered in a way to be useful for any academic or practitioner in the "Managerial, Life and Social Sciences."

For example, in the section on Bayes' Theorem (Section 7.6) the statement of Bayes' Theorem followed by 30 so-called "real-world" problems, each indistinguishable from the next save only in the numbers used in the problem. We are given 'statistics' of males and females. At the end of the problem one finds the following:Source: Department of Justice.Really? So much time supposedly spent collecting and surveying real-life sources and the problem ends up looking any other made-up problem in a probability book.Again, why use a book that cannot back up claims to have interwoven real-life with classroom mathematics and pay so damn much for it?

Shame on the publishers for making a ninth edition practically identical to the 8th edition.See for yourself, buy the 8th edition used for under $20 and borrow a copy of the 9th edition. The text, exercises and examples are exactly the same. This is a huge problem in my eyes, not only are universities continually using this book, they are (not doubt, delightfully) forcing students to buy this dubiously "new & improved" edition at a ridiculous price.

Ironically, on the back cover of the instructor's edition, Brooks/Cole offers 5 easy ways to keep the price of textbooks down.Presumably, this is only seen by the instructor after the book is chosen for the course.I offer easy-way-to-save number 6: avoid this book altogether.Encourage your students to buy the 8th edition for a fraction of the price.

I hope students and those in charge of coordinating curriculum alike will take notice and allow this book to fade in to oblivion.

Lastly, it is knee-slapping hilarious to note that it is not the author's picture located inside the cover of the book.Upon the first and second glances, one thinks that since Chris Shannon's picture is on the front cover AND the inside cover along with a short biography that she must be other.Nope.Not even close, as the school she teaches at is in California and S.T. Tan teaches in Massachusetts. In case you were wondering, you have to flip past the publisher's pages, title pages and table of contents to find Professor Tan hiding in the corner.

While pointing out these pictures is indeed funny, we come to another sad feature about this book.Though it tries to focus on mathematics used in the real world, as in settings outside of academia, the only people 'featured' in the book are university professors.

If you are even thinking about using this book, please please please, I implore you, pick another.

Popular in previous editions, this Third Edition continues to help build students' confidence and ability in doing statistical analysis by slowly moving from concepts that require little computational work to those that require more. Author R. Mark Sirkin once again demonstrates how statistics can be used so that students come to appreciate their usefulness rather than fear them. Statistics for the Social Sciences emphasizes the analysis and interpretation of data to give students a feel for how data interpretation is related to the methods by which the information was obtained.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive textbook
This is a comprehensive book covering all the major topics that a student would need for the statistics modules in various social science courses. Managers need to have an understanding of statistics so that they are able to manipulate the numerous masses of data that come their way into meaningful and useful information that they can employ in making decisions in organisations.

The author presented the material in the book in a clear and in-depth manner, making it suitable for social science students studying statistics or carrying out research required statistical manipulations. The author also provided several examples and exercises that should assist the reader in consolidating his/her understanding of the concepts described in the book.

Most managers are consumers rather than producers of statistical information. This book equips you with the expertise to enable you to be an informed consumer who knows the right questions to ask and the kind of information to request from those who produce the statistical information in the organization.

Product Description

In the past twenty years, the field of science and technology studies (S&TS) has made considerable progress toward illuminating the relationship between scientific knowledge and political power. These insights are now ready to be synthesized and presented in forms that systematically highlight the connections between S&TS and other social sciences.

This timely collection of essays by leading scholars in the field meets this challenge. The book develops the theme of 'co-production', showing how scientific knowledge both embeds and is embedded in social identities, institutions, representations and discourses. Accordingly, the authors argue, ways of knowing the world are inseparably linked to the ways in which people seek to organize and control it. Through studies of emerging knowledges, research practices and political institutions, the authors demonstrate that the idiom of co-production importantly extends the vocabulary of the traditional social sciences, offering fresh analytic perspectives on the nexus of science, power and culture.

4-0 out of 5 stars Social Research at its best
Although several reviews critized the author. I believe the author has gone the extra mile to present social research analysis with a more simplistic method from other authors such as Cresswell. Do not worry about the jokes the author makes, not the best ones, however, but if you stick to the reading and forget about the jokes, you will be amazed to how much you will be able to grasp about social research.

Product Description

This book covers mediation analysis-the examination of whether an effect of one variable on another is direct or indirect or both. Author Dawn Iacobucci offers thorough coverage of introductory and advanced material as well as conceptual and statistical information. The book begins by introducing arguments of causality, and proceeds to examine current options for analyzing data patterns purported to exhibit meditational structures. Iacobucci shows direct and indirect paths via causal paths, regression, and structural equations models. She also grounds readers in a popular structural equations modeling approach so they can implement the statistical methods discussed in testing for evidence of mediation in a variety of empirical contexts.

Key Features

· Explores even the fundamental assumptions underlying mediation analysis

· Describes options for analyzing mediation data

· Provides syntax for a widely available and popular computer program so users can begin implementing mediation ideas immediately on their data

Intended Audience

This book is appropriate for any course in regression and correlation, sociological research methods, quantitative research methods, quantitative techniques in Business & Management, Psychology, Political Science, or Public Policy departments.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise overview, includes newer developments and applications
This is a very readable, brief, and accurate introduction to mediation testing.

The book's notable strengths include: (1) integration of recent methodological developments beyond the now-dated Baron-Kenny approach, (2) one of the most readable introductions to the rather complex and often-misunderstood notions of moderated-mediation and mediated-moderation, and (3) frequent examples of how to conduct particular tests in structural equation modeling packages such as LISREL. The book also discusses how different types of variables should be dealt with (dichotomous, continuous, etc) in using each of the described procedures. All of these make 69 "real" pages of the book densely packed with contemporary methodological details.

The strengths of the book readily outweigh its weaknesses, which are two-fold.

First, the book's discussion of moderated-mediation and mediated-moderation models is rather simplistic. In particular, there are different classes of models (Type 1 through Type 5) that are not touched on here. Since you are reading this, the missing details can be found in the following two papers. (Please recognize that one of these papers might have appeared after the book was finished, and the author is unlikely to have a crystal ball specialized in forthcoming papers.)

Edwards, J., and Lambert, L. 2007. Methods for Integrating Moderation and Mediation: A General Analytical Framework Using Moderated Path Analysis. Psychological Methods. 12(1) 1-22.

Muller, D., Judd, C.M., and Yzerbyt, V. 2005. When Moderation Is Mediated and Mediation Is Moderated. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. 89(6) 852-863.

Second, the author emphasizes SEM to a fault while discouraging the use of OLS regression. She also implies (page 49) that averaged construct scores are preferable for creating product terms in tests. This is a strong statement since this issue is still being debated in 2008.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who uses mediation tests in their research and wants to break out of the 1980s mode of thinking that mediation testing stopped with Baron Kenny (1986). Notwithstanding its _minor_ weaknesses, this is well worth the seventeen bucks. ... Read more
