Written by professor of elementary social studies Rahima C. Wade, Social Studies for Social Justice: Teaching Strategies for the Elementary Classroom is a guide to using social action and social justice activities in the elementary school classroom, the better to teach children about the value of getting involved. Chapters discuss practical undertakings as well as theories and ideals, covering how to create a socially just classroom community, valuable teaching strategies, the role of activism and community connections, and much more. "When community members enter the classroom to talk about their life experiences, students get a window into time periods and perspectives they might not have encountered otherwise. The mission of social studies education is to develop informed and active citizens and the practice of social justice work is one of the best means for reaching that goal." Highly recommended. ... Product Description

As assistant secretary in the United States Department of Labor, Daniel Patrick Moynihan wrote his report “The Negro Family: The Case for National Action” in 1965 as an internal document within the administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson. It described alarming trends in black employment, poverty, and education and argued that they were exacerbated by black family instability. While Moynihan called for a jobs program to employ black men and stabilize families, the report was attacked as an attempt to blame blacks rather than the injustices in American society and widely vilified as sexist and racist in liberal circles.

Now more than 40 years later, this issue of The ANNALS reviews this controversial yet “prophetic report” through a new lens, bringing together some of the country’s foremost social scientists to consider how its arguments and predictions have fared in subsequent years and how the controversy surrounding it influenced social science in the late 20th century.

Product Description

The Reviewer’s Guide to Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences is designed for evaluators of research manuscripts and proposals in the social and behavioral sciences, and beyond. Its thirty-one uniquely structured chapters cover both traditional and emerging methods of quantitative data analysis, which neither junior nor veteran reviewers can be expected to know in detail. The book updates readers on each technique’s key principles, appropriate usage, underlying assumptions, and limitations. It thereby assists reviewers to offer constructive commentary on works they evaluate, and also serves as an indispensable author’s reference for preparing sound research manuscripts and proposals. Key features include:

The chapters cover virtually all of the popular classic and emerging quantitative techniques, thus helping reviewers to evaluate a manuscript’s methodological approach and its data analysis. In addition, the volume serves as an indispensable reference tool for those designing their own research.

For ease of use, all chapters follow the same structure:

  • the opening page of each chapter defines and explains the purpose of that statistical method
  • the next one or two pages provide a table listing various criteria that should be considered when evaluating and applying that methodological approach to data analysis
  • the remainder of each chapter contains numbered sections corresponding to the numbered criteria listed in the opening table. Each section explains the role and importance of that particular criterion.

Chapters are written by methodological and applied scholars who are expert in the particular quantitative method being reviewed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reviewers and Producers of Quantitative Research Need to Have this Book on Their Bookshelf
This is a tremendously helpful book for reviewers (and producers) of quantitative research in the social sciences. The strengths of this book include the authors and the content, but perhaps more importantly, the book's format. Each chapter concerns a particular methodology or topic, authored by experts in their respective fields. Written in brief, digestible segments, each chapter presents the "state of the art" in a particular statistical methodology or concept (e.g., Osbourne's chapter on correlations describes why Spearman's rank correlation is no longer needed, and the importance of checking for outliers and fringeliers). Yet, the incredibly user-friendly format of each chapter makes this content all the more accessible and useful. Chapters begin with a brief description of the topic, followed by a table listing the key criteria used to evaluate whether the particular statistical technique or concept was applied reasonably. Then, a brief but clear discussion of each criterion is presented. The modular nature of the book, and the chapters themselves, allow reviewers to quickly find needed information regarding techniques, assumptions, and potential confounds. This book cannot take the place of formal training in a particular statistical technique, but for those of us who, years ago, took classes in techniques we have not subsequently used very often, this book is an invaluable reminder of what criteria to attend to, and a good update regarding current thinking in the field. While I think this book is essential for reviewers of research, it would behoove producers of research to use this book as well when they determine what information needs to be included in their manuscripts to clearly convey the adequacy of their methodology. ... Product Description
During the past fifty years, colonial empires around the world have collapsed and vast areas that were once known as "colonies" have become known as "less developed countries" or "the third world." The idea of development--and the relationship it implies between industrialized, affluent nations and poor, emerging nations--has become the key to a new conceptual framework. Development has also become a vast industry, involving billions of dollars and a worldwide community of experts. These essays--written by scholars in many fields--examine the production, transmission, and implementation of ideas about development within historical, political, and intellectual contexts, emphasizing the changing meanings of development over the past fifty years.
The concept of development has come under attack in recent years both from those who see development as the imperialism of knowledge, imposing on the world a modernity that it does not necessarily want, and those who see development efforts as a distortion of the world market. These essays look beyond the polemics and focus on the diverse, contested, and changing meanings of development among social movements, national governments, international agencies, foundations, and scholars. ... Product Description
Emotional Intelligence was an international phenomenon, appearing on the New York Times bestseller list for over a year and selling more than five million copies worldwide. Now, once again, Daniel Goleman has written a groundbreaking synthesis of the latest findings in biology and brain science, revealing that we are “wired to connect” and the surprisingly deep impact of our relationships on every aspect of our lives.

Far more than we are consciously aware, our daily encounters with parents, spouses, bosses, and even strangers shape our brains and affect cells throughout our bodies—down to the level of our genes—for good or ill. In Social Intelligence, Daniel Goleman explores an emerging new science with startling implications for our interpersonal world. Its most fundamental discovery: we are designed for sociability, constantly engaged in a “neural ballet” that connects us brain to brain with those around us.

Our reactions to others, and theirs to us, have a far-reaching biological impact, sending out cascades of hormones that regulate everything from our hearts to our immune systems, making good relationships act like vitamins—and bad relationships like poisons. We can “catch” other people’s emotions the way we catch a cold, and the consequences of isolation or relentless social stress can be life-shortening. Goleman explains the surprising accuracy of first impressions, the basis of charisma and emotional power, the complexity of sexual attraction, and how we detect lies. He describes the “dark side” of social intelligence, from narcissism to Machiavellianism and psychopathy. He also reveals our astonishing capacity for “mindsight,” as well as the tragedy of those, like autistic children, whose mindsight is impaired.

Is there a way to raise our children to be happy? What is the basis of a nourishing marriage? How can business leaders and teachers inspire the best in those they lead and teach? How can groups divided by prejudice and hatred come to live together in peace?

The answers to these questions may not be as elusive as we once thought. And Goleman delivers his most heartening news with powerful conviction: we humans have a built-in bias toward empathy, cooperation, and altruism–provided we develop the social intelligence to nurture these capacities in ourselves and others. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Book Review By David Allan Reeves Author of "Running Away From Me"
I just finished reading Social Intelligence by Daniel Goleman. In a chapter about prisons, he scientifically expresses what I've witnessed over the last ten years, namely that prisons cultivate criminal instincts instead of "correcting" them. Our prisons, as they are today, should be called "corruptions" rather than "corrections." The cure is worse than the disease, or rather in this case, the cure exacerbates the disease.

Biologically speaking, survival in prison demands that the part of the brain called the amygdala be set for "paranoid hyper-vigilance." The amygdala triggers the fight, flight or freeze response. Fear forces the amygdala to override the areas of the brain which are responsible for rational thought. A key to inhibiting these primitive responses is a group of neurons in the OFC (orbitofrontal cortex) that can curb impulses from the amygdala. The circuitry running from the amygdala to the OFC can be strengthened or weakened through conditioning. During imprisonment, we have a choice to mold this crucial brain circuitry for self-control. It's like molding a statue. In the early stages, you have a chance to get the pose just right, but once the arm or some other body part is in position, it quickly becomes too late to correct it.

Most prisoners never get a chance to correct the habits and circumstances that keep them out of prison's revolving doors. As Goleman says, "Prisons are colleges for crime, strengthening an inmate's predilection and skill sets for criminality. Younger prisoners...typically become mentored by more seasoned inmates, so that on their release they are...endowed with greater skills as criminals." I've witnessed this happen time and time again over the last ten years. Prisons are supposed to be a tool to protect society, but the opposite is happening. We put law breakers in prison to punish them and make them suffer, but then release them as more sophisticated and violent criminals to do ever greater damage to society.

We can view criminals as being socially sick, an illness marked by lack of empathy for others and lack of emotional intelligence and impulse control. For various reasons they've violated the rights of others and the rules of society for their own selfish motives. This sickness is what needs to be "corrected." Punishment and suffering do nothing to achieve this objective. It only makes it worse.

Goleman makes a few recommendations. He says prisons need to be reinvented to offer a remedial neural education using programs which strengthen the circuits of the social brain for empathy and for regulating emotional impulses. These programs have been used in schools to reduce fighting by 69 percent, bullying by 75 percent and harassment by 67 percent.

Another component of a better justice system would be the use of "restorative justice." Criminals should have to face the emotional aftermath of their crimes and make amends to the victims. Victim impact sessions are already practiced in some states but not in the federal system. I had several victims in my string of robberies and I never had to face even one of them. I have no idea what I did to them. I don't know if they suffer from post traumatic stress disorder, if they had to quit their jobs, or of any way that my crimes may have negatively impacted their lives. I can only assume that I hurt them more than I'll ever know. But facing them and listening to them would have went a long way in helping me atone for my crimes and heal my social sickness, so that I can become a better functioning human being. But instead, I was thrown into a violent prison, a hell where everyone fights for respect and violence wins prestige, where the physically powerful prevail and fear rules all.

Everything I've done to improve myself in prison, I've had to do on my own with little or no help from a soulless, robotic, prison bureaucracy. Even this book, Social Intelligence, had to be borrowed from another inmate, even though the information inside is invaluable to someone wanting to recover from a life of addiction and crime. If I didn't make a daily, conscious effort to repair my broken life, I would fall fast into a pit of bitterness, apathy and self-defeat as the vast majority of my fellow inmates have, only to be released back to the streets worse than before.Running Away From Me

3-0 out of 5 stars Plodding Pace but Interesting in Places
I love what S. Anton "Explorer" writes in his Amazon review: "If you are expecting to learn anything that can actually help you in your life, forget it. An odd collection of quirky insights that in the great scheme of things add up to nothing." While I'm not quite so harsh as to give the book a mere 1 star (I'll give it 3), S. Anton's review does a good job summarizing my gut reaction to the book:
1. I bought the paperback and found the rambling style difficult to plod through. Fortunately, I acquired the audiobook through the library and found listening to that while driving and bicycling somewhat easier. Rarely have I started a book I was so happy to finish simply in order to begin something less plodding and with more substance!
2. The whole book is based on the (in my opinion) still developing and insufficiently supported science of mirror neurons, and of "low road" versus "high road." Yet as Goleman himself confesses, "the neural specifics of both systems have yet to be worked out and are still under debate." (p. 321)
3. Much of the supposed scientific conclusions do nothing more than affirm common sense. You don't need a doctorate to know most of what is concluded within these pages.
4. Content useful for personal application is skimpy at best, and that statement might be considered generous. I will, however, try to find time to investigate further topics mentioned by Goleman such as the Baron-Cohen test, empathy quotient, the eye test, PONS, and Ekman's' test for reading micro-expressions (pp 87 and 139).
5. One of the many times Goleman summarizes his thesis can be found on page 314:"the exquisite social responsiveness of the brain demands that we realize that not just our own emotions but our very biology is being driven and molded for better or for worse, by others--and in turn, that we take responsibility for how we affect the people in our lives." Being as the book is highly repetitive, my advice to you is to read the first chapter and maybe skim one or two more, skipping ahead quickly to the epilogue. In hindsight, I would have been better off doing that with both of the "intelligence" books by Goleman I have read to date. Spend the time relating emotionally and socially with people instead!

3-0 out of 5 stars Social Intelligence Review
This book *looks* as if it is very, very informational and that you can learn A LOT from it, however it is actually full of many points constantly repeating itself
Sometimes, a whole paragraph full of complex adjectives could be just summed up in one point.
Caution; If you are thinking of applying his ideas to life, just gotta say this book is more for understanding theoretical concepts, etc. Eg+ Neurotical analysis of the brain, etc

It Never really explains precisely how you can improve your social skills, but more like suggest vaguely

This book shouldn't be as thick but half the size

1-0 out of 5 stars Overrated, poorly written
This is a very boring, badly written text -- it just wanders all over the place and never says anything. The basic premise, I think, is that we are neurologically wired to communicate with others -- and that it takes a concerted effort on everyone's part to understand and be kind.

Other than that, the thing just kills you when you try to read it straight through.

Find a 10-minute video about this on YouTube and watch that instead. You'll get all you need out of it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Difficult style to read and follow
I bought this book, as I am interested in improving my social skills, especially in the business environment. The thing is that it is written as a series of un-linked short stories to prove his theory. Even though it proves the point, in my opinion it is very difficult to read and follow. I am kind of disappointed, as I have read other books and articles from him, and I am having a hard time reading it. ... Read more

This volume is an important complement to Wasserman and Faust's Social Network Analysis: Methods and Applications (Cambridge, 1995).The authors, leading methodologists, present the most significant developments in quantitative models and methods for analyzing social network data that appeared in the 1990s. They review recent advances in network measurement, network sampling, analysis of centrality, positional analysis or blockmodelling, analysis of diffusion through networks, analysis of affiliation or "two-mode" networks, the theory of random graphs, and dependence graphs. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Put on your technical hat. This is advanced math more than a social network research guide.
Social Network Analysis is taking off. in 1932 the sociologist Moreno was the first to draw a social network diagram, yet while the thinking has been seductive the technical capability of generating social network maps has only recently arrived on the researcher's desktop. Suddenly, as it were, many different sciences (social science, organisational research, market research, environmental research) are connecting the dots.

Social network analysis is mathematically vastly different from normal statistical methods. A whole new language is used - and concepts such as "betweenness" or "centrality" correctly convey the spatial nature of SN analysis.

This volume of 13 papers on the topic includes the perspectives of social scientists, through to cutting-edge SN mathematicians, and to be honest I come more from the former category. I'm a market research analyst and found the more intensely mathematical chapters, replete with formulae, simply beyond my grasp. So a warning for readers of my persuasion: you'll need to put on your technical hat.

That said, there is more than enough grist here for a lay person such as myself to learn the basics of Social Network Analysis and to understand many of the new dynamics of this field. I particularly recommend Linton Freeman's chapter of graphical techniques because it makes a warm link between the science and art of this emerging field.

The last chapter also more than makes the price of admission well worthwhile because it reviews available SN softwares (this book was published in 2005 so it is quite contemporary) and our small analytical firm has been able to invest in a good product. We now use the book as our technical support as we learn the unique and illuminating characteristics of social network analysis - in organisational research, and in some innovative work we're now able to do in market research. This volume is practical help.

Our society is increasingly networked through mobiles, internet and other layers of social connection. For social, organisational and market researchers this field is vital. I can therefore recommend this volume as a guidebook. If I found it valuable (despite being somewhat difficult,) you readers with a math degree will find it even more fascinating. Strongly recommended if you're getting into the SN field.

This critically acclaimed book serves a timely purpose by addressing the ever-important need to develop critical thinking skills. Major advances in the social sciences in recent years have been incorporated in an explicit discussion of quasi-experimental research design, including an added distinction between equivalent- and nonequivalent-group experiments, and revised explanations of the logic of multiple regression analysis, causal modeling, and meta-analysis, all new to this edition. The authors retain their firm philosophical grounding in the positivist tradition, arguing around the central concepts of "statement of fact" and "scientific evidence." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching Reading Across Subject Areas
I checked out this book at my local public library, but I kept getting late fees for keeping it too long.It has been invaluable in my degree program.I decided it was time for me to get my own personal copy for future use. This is an excellent reference book for curriculum planning and enhancement. It contains a host of reading activities that can be used for subject areas such as math, social studies, and science.Teachers are always looking for ways to increase students' reading in the content areas--this book certainly accomplishes that task.It also helped me to generate ideas of my own in other subject areas, e.g., geography, thematic units, and lesson plans, etc.It should be called the guide to teaching reading across the curriculum.Do use the reference pages in the back of the book as they offer another great resource for incorporating these content areas into reading.I especially like that it has wonderful ideas for secondary students. It has made my unit planning so much easier, and made learning fun for my students.

2-0 out of 5 stars Generic, bland, impractical teacher's ed text.
This is more or less the downmarket version of Kylene DeBeers substantially better "Why Kids Can't Read". In this text, Robb repeatedly cites herself and employs a "three part learning framework" that's so asinine she can't even seem to keep it straight. Really who would do lesson plans in chunks of beginning/middle/end? It's silly. No really, that's her "revolutionary" idea.

Anyway the book is littered with inconsistencies, the strategies do not even match up to the same part of her learning framework throughout the book (for proof check the list on p.58 and compare with the list on p.231 for one example). The strategies themselves are pretty much the same as every other book like this. Not particularly bad, but Vacca & Vacca have a lot more of them (and had some nice graphic organizers) and DeBeers' text was at least marginally interesting about it.

The worst part is how ridiculously impractical it is. Depth, not breadth is emphasized, which is commendable in principle, but if you taught like this, you'd finish maybe a chapter by the end of June and your kids would be illiterate. It recommends 20-30 minutes for responding to prompts - a 5-7 minutes "Do Now" activity. It's a hysterically out of touch book by another educrat. If you listen to the time guidelines, prepare to be fired.

2-0 out of 5 stars Think "Inside-the-Box" Textbook
It is disappointing that we teach and are taught with such uncreative, mind-numbing texts. If you want to peddle institutionalized, professor-manufacturer's, buy this, read it, and believe it.

Product Description

The advent of complex and powerful computer-generated statistical models has greatly eroded the former prominence of social theory in data analysis, replacing it with an emphasis on statistical technique. To correct this trend, Carol S. Aneshensel presents a method for bringing data analysis and statistical technique into line with theory. She approaches this task by first providing an overview that explains the connection between data analysis, statistical technique, and theory. This section includes a description of the elaboration model for analyzing the empirical association between two variables by adding a "third variable" to the analysis.

Aneshensel then introduces a new concept into this model, the focal relationship. This concept is the one cause-and-effect type of relationship of primary significance that is indispensable to the entire theory. Building upon the focal relationship as the cornerstone for all subsequent analysis, two analytic strategies are developed to establish its internal validity:

  • An exclusionary strategy to eliminate alternative explanations for the focal relationship using control and other independent variables to rule out spuriousness and redundancy.
  • An inclusive strategy to demonstrate that the focal relationship fits within an interconnected set of relationships predicted by theory using antecedent, intervening and consequent variables.

Using real examples of social research, the author demonstrates the use of this approach for two common forms of analysis, multiple linear regression and logistic regression.

Whether learning data analysis for the first time or adding new techniques to your repertoire, this book provides an excellent basis for theory-based data analysis.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's about time
In 1968 Morris Rosenberg published a wonderfully non-technical methodological text titled The Logic of Survey Analysis.Over the years, this informative volume, which relies entirely on percentaged cross-tabs for statistical information, taught thousands of students to think about models with more than two variables.Rosenberg's concepts have became part of the social scientists' everyday language -- extraneous and component variables, intervening and antecedent variables, suppressor and distorter variables, spuriousness and non-spuriousness, and so on.These and other concepts introduced by Rosenberg are still invaluable aids in making sense of even the most complex statistical models.

Unfortunately, Rosenberg did not publish an updated version of the Logic of Survey Analysis, and, in time, his examples came to seem antiquated and lost their once compelling character.Happily, though, Carol Aneshensel has written a follow-up to Rosenberg's text.Using multiple regression analysis rather than cross-tabs, and providing an abundance of diagrams and tables to illustrate crucial concepts such such as statistical control, Aneshensel's book is a worthy sequel to Rosenberg's 1968 text.

Aneshensel's presentation is more than just a regression-based replication of Rosenberg's work. She has new concepts of her own, such as focal relationship, which fit neatly into Rosenberg's schema and provide a more complete language with which to discuss the elaboration of relationships involving more than two inter-related variables.

I think it would have been best if Aneshensel has stuck to OLS regression equations, which she presents and discusses admirably. The addition of logistic regression equations, while useful for those who understand logistic regression, makes the book seem harder than it is.Conceptually, moreover, the logistic regression equations add nothing to the logic of elaboration that could not be done with OLS.

In any case, this is a good book that deserves to be selling a lot better than Amazon's ranking indicates. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent Reference for beginners
I have recently completed a masters, and found this book to be a great reference to understand the basics of how to report the findings of my research.I did not have much experience with academic research before, and this was a good start.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
This is a "must have" book if you are taking statistics.I am presently taking Advance Statistics and I have always had trouble in the correct phrasing of the statistics that I have produced from my studies. I searched and bought many books to help guide me in this area. I was exicted when I read through this book. It not only guides you, it gives specific examples on the correct terminology. I am not yet an expert at writing up statistics but I am much better because of this book.

As a side note, I have also shown it to others in my class, along with my professor, and many are going to order it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very useful book
I got this for a quantitative methods class this semester and it's been a helpful guide for explaining how to write up results from statistical output. It provides clear 'how-to' examples and illustrations of individual statistics, as well as explanations of terminology used for reporting results.

If you're new to writing up statistical results, or would like a guide that clearly explains symbols, terminology, what you're supposed to include, and when/where to include it - this is for you. ... Read more

Product Description
This is a collection in translation of essays by Paul Ricoeur which presents a comprehensive view of his philosophical hermeneutics, its relation to the views of his predecessors in the tradition and its consequences for the social sciences. The volume has three parts. The studies in the first part examine the history of hermeneutics, its central themes and the outstanding issues it has to confront. In Part II, Ricoeur's own current, constructive position is developed. A concept of the text is formulated as the implications of the theory are pursued into the domains of sociology, psychoanalysis and history. Many of the essays appear here in English for the first time; the editor's introduction brings out their background in Ricoeur's thought and the continuity of his concerns. The volume will be of great importance for those interested in hermeneutics and Ricoeur's contribution to it, and will demonstrate how much his approach offers to a number of disciplines. ... Product Description
Focusing on the disciplines of economics, sociology, political science, and history, this book examines how American social science came to model itself on natural science and liberal politics. Professor Ross argues that American social science receives its distinctive stamp from the ideology of American exceptionalism, the idea that America occupies an exceptional place in history, based on her republican government and wide economic opportunity. Under the influence of this national self-conception, Americans believed that their history was set on a millennial course, exempted from historical change and from the mass poverty and class conflict of Europe. Before the Civil War, this vision of American exceptionalism drew social scientists into the national effort to stay the hand of time. Not until after the Civil War did industrialization force Americans to confront the idea and reality of historical change. The social science disciplines had their origin in that crisis and their development is a story of efforts to evade and tame historical transformation in the interest of exceptionalist ideals. This is the first book to look broadly at American social science in its historical context and to demonstrate the central importance of the national ideology of American exceptionalism to the development of the social sciences and to American social thought generally. ...
