Product Description
This study of religious change and cultural fragmentation in contemporary Sri Lanka focuses on a series of new Catholic shrines that attract hundreds of pilgrims. Their fame is based, among other things, on their efficacy as centers for demonic exorcism, alleviating suffering and helping people to find jobs. The author looks at the rise of these shrines in relation to the historical experience of the Catholic community in Sri Lanka, rather than in terms of narrowly defined religious criteria. Central to this broader nonreligious context is the role of power and especially the impact of post colonialism on the small Roman Catholic population. ... Read more

Product Description
In part due to the recent Yanomami controversy, which has rocked anthropology to its very core, there is renewed interest in the discipline's history and intellectual roots, especially amongst anthropologists themselves. The cutting edge of anthropological research today is a product of earlier questions and answers, previous ambitions, preoccupations and adventures, stretching back one hundred years or more. This book is the first comprehensive history of American anthropology.

Anthropology as a discipline has always developed in a close relationship with other social sciences, but this relationship has rarely been scrutinized. How has anthropology been linked to colonial, commercial and territorial expansion in the States? How have the changing forms of race, power, ethnic identity and politics shaped the questions anthropologists ask, both past and present? This book details and explains the complex interplay of forces and conditions that have made anthropology in America what it is today. Furthermore, the authors explore how anthropologists themselves have contributed and propagated powerful images and ideas about the different cultures and societies that make up our world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a post-Stocking history of anthropology
This book goes a long way toward redirecting the history of anthropology away from the blindspots inflicted on us by George W. Stocking Jr. and his mob.Patterson's marxist approach stresses political and economic factors that anthropology's historical gatekeepers have tried to shield us from noticing. A great book that shoul be read by all anthropologists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging and informative overview
This book did exactly what I wanted it to do! I received an overview of the history of American anthropology in less than two hundred pages. The book is broken down into historical periods such as the New Republic, Liberal Age, Postwar Era, and the Neoliberal Era. I came to this book , because I had read a bio on FRanz Boas during my studies of Northwest native cultures. It was interesting to learn in what ways science, politics, and education impacted anthropology and to see how the separate disciplines evolved. The bibliography is EXTENSIVE, so if you want to know more about any one social scientist ora particular historical movement the biblio points in the right direction. Although scholarly, this book is not difficult to follow for the average reader that is interested in the subject. I highly recommend it if you are looking for an excellent overview of American anthropology. ... Read more

Product Description
In 80 entries this work provides an introduction to the key ideas of cultural anthropology. In each article--culture, race, materialism, semiotics, "primitive," etc.--Winthrop provides a balance between describing a concept's contemporary theoretical relevance and tracing its development, including the broader intellectual context transcending professional anthropology. Thus the article on "interpretation" discusses St. Augustine, Schliermacher, Dilthey, and Gadamer, as well as Geertz and Evans-Pritchard. That on "ethnology" treats Boemus, Acosta, and Prichard as well as the Boasians. The article on "nature" contrasts the Greek concept of physis with the Roman natura. Though this is a work of synthesis rather than of original historical scholarship, Winthrop quotes primary sources as much as possible, to let the key figures speak for themselves. ... Read more

Product Description
In this case study, readers will embark on an improbable journey through the heart of Africa to discover how indigenous people cope with the rapid-killing Ebola virus. The Hewletts are the first anthropologists ever invited by the World Health Organization to join a medical intervention team and assist in efforts to control an Ebola outbreak. Their account addresses political, structural, psychological, and cultural factors, along with conventional intervention protocols as problematic to achieving medical objectives. They find obvious historical and cultural answers to otherwise-puzzling questions about why village people often flee, refuse to cooperate, and sometimes physically attack members of intervention teams. Perhaps surprisingly, readers will discover how some cultural practices of local people are helpful and should be incorporated into control procedures. The authors shed new light on a continuing debate about the motivation for human behavior by showing how local responses to epidemics are rooted both in culture and in human nature. Well-supported recommendations emerge from a comparative analysis of Central African cases and pandemics worldwide to suggest how the United States and other countries might use anthropologists and the insights of anthropologists to mount more effective public health campaigns, with particular attention to avian flu and bioterrorism. ... Product Description

This third edition builds on the international success of previous editions, offering an easy access critical introduction to social science theories of identity, for advanced undergraduates and postgraduates. All of the previous chapters have been updated and extra material has been added where relevant, for example, on globalization. Two new chapters have been added; one addresses the debate about whether identity matters, discussing, for example, Brubaker; the second reviews the postmodern approach to identity.

The text is informed by relevant topical examples throughout and, as with earlier editions, the emphasis is on sociology, anthropology and social psychology, focusing on the interplay between relationships of similarity and difference; on interaction; on the categorization of others as well as self-identification; and on power, institutions and organizations.

Comprehensive, readable and written for the student, Haviland/Prins/Walwrath's market-leading text, CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY, is a highly relevant, high-quality teaching tool. The narrative voice of the text has been thoroughly internationalized and the "we:they" Western voice has been replaced with an inclusive one that will resonate with both Western and non-Western students and professors. In addition, gender, ethnicity, and stratification concepts and terminologies have been completely overhauled in accordance with contemporary thinking and the narrative streamlined using more fully developed, balanced, and global examples. In CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY, the authors present students with examples of "local responses" to challenging globalization issues, designed to provide students with a "cross-cultural survival guide"for living in the diverse, multicultural world of the 21st century. This edition is a truly exciting and unique examination into the field of cultural anthropology, its insights, its relevance, and the continuing role of cultural survival issues. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cultural Anthropology, 11th edition

4-0 out of 5 stars Just a book for class.
I did get a used book for a class. It is a great buy, I would've paid $148 for a new one at school, but I asked the teacher and he said this older edition would be fine, so I saved myself a ton of money. The book is in good condition, too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Good Information, Could Have Been Leaner
While the text is only 315-pages, it is like reading fine print. The author is a "Reader in Anthropology" at the London School of Economics & Political Science.Maybe not my first choice to step forward as an authority on the subject.

"I have just suggested that tattooing is primarily associated with two sociologically defined categories (1) marginalized subcultures (2) preliterate tribal societies.I have further hinted that this distribution is explicable because there is elective affinity between tattooing as an expressive mode and certain lifestyle attributes and value orientations, and that these are the common properties of both categories (1) & (2).It would seem to follow that I must have in the back of my mind some universalist interpretation of what tattooing means. It is indeed true that I have a certain general interpretive idea, but I hope that this need not imply that I am hell-bent on forcing all the available ethnographic data , from whatever source, into a single Procrustean bed of 'tattooing theory'."

Who talks like that?Makes me want to smack him.Its this kind of academia babble that really challenges the reader of this exhausting book.I'll also wager Gell is acting an authority on a subject, and he probably has never gotten a tattoo. So why does it get 4-stars?

Partly because I couldn't give 3.5 and partly because there is nothing else like it that I am aware of.Amid the endless litany of Gell loving to hear himself speak, there is some excellent primary source information on traditional tattooing. It takes real effort and desire to plow through the beginning with all his stupid thoughts like the one above to get to something like:

"We are certainly entitled to regard tattooing as a part of the Samoans' armoury in the field of psychological warfare.Tattoos would be visible in battle, during which those engaged wore only minimal clothing. They certainly must have made warriors more impressive to their opponents, and their gestures of defiance more horrid (and also served to identify slain warriors). As an initiatory episode, tattooing was a means of magically fortifying young men and preparing them for military service..."

I really didn't need to spend $50 to get that, and most of his presentation is typically that awkward/obtuse.In any event, there is a lot of quotation from primary sources that will be of interest to anyone investigated the history or practices of the old cultures associated with Tatau. The Hawaiian section is scant. The Samoan, Tongan, Maori, and Marquesas sections have decent coverage, though each of these cultures should have their own chapter.Tahiti, Fiji, and the Cook Islands equal less than 20-pages.The author really needed to spend time in all these places, and then maybe there would have been more substance to the book.

To really write a book like this, the author needs to do academic research of source materials (which he did rather well), and then, he needs to spend a few years living amongst these cultures (he obviously didn't) and then, HE NEEDS TO GET TATTOOED!Then we'd have a 5-star book. ... Read more

Product Description

While ethnography ordinarily privileges anthropological interpretations, this book attempts the reciprocal process of describing indigenous modes of analysis.Drawing on long-term ethnographic research with the Yonggom people of New Guinea, the author examines how indigenous analysis organizes local knowledge and provides a framework for interpreting events, from first contact and colonial rule to contemporary interactions with a multinational mining company and the Indonesian state.

This book highlights Yonggom participation in two political movements: an international campaign against the Ok Tedi mine, which is responsible for extensive deforestation and environmental problems, and the opposition to Indonesian control over West Papua, including Yonggom experiences as political refugees in Papua New Guinea. The author challenges a prevailing homogenization in current representations of indigenous peoples, showing how Yonggom modes of analysis specifically have shaped these political movements.

Product Description

Industrial Work and Life: An Anthropological Reader is a comprehensive anthropological overview of industrialisation in both Western and non-Western societies. Based on contemporary and historical ethnographic material, the book unpacks the 'world of industry' in the context of the shop floor, the family, and the city, revealing the rich social and political texture underpinning economic development.  It also provides a critical discussion of the assumptions that inform much of the social science literature on industrialization and industrial 'modernity.' The reader is divided into four thematic sections, each with a clear and informative introduction: historical development of industrial capitalism; shopfloor organization; the relationships between the workplace and the home; the teleology of industrial 'modernity' and working-class consciousness. With readings by key writers from a range of backgrounds and disciplines, Industrial Work and Life is the essential introduction to the study of industrialisation in different societies.  It will appeal to students across a wide range of subjects including: anthropology, comparative sociology, social history, development studies, industrial relations and management studies.
