Good but...
Best book for learning adaptive signal processing
Classic I have not found a comperable book on Kalman filtering. To bad Widrow and Stearns have not written one on this subject.
Get This Book if you want to get This Subject. Before I read this book, adaptive filtering was a mystery and the LMS algorithm looked like a programming nightmare. It looked like more Kalman filtering. My eyes have been opened. The LMS algorithm for adaptive filtering is almost as simple as Tit for Tat is for game theory. This is the gateway text to understand adaptive filtering, adaptive arrays (help the navy find the rogue submarine), adaptive equalization (design the next generation of modem), adaptive control(say goodbye to overshoot), adaptive prediction (beat the stock market).Furthermore, it leads naturally into the artificial intelligence techniques. If you are an engineer or a programmer, you should have this tool in your toolbox.
The best introductory book I've seen on this subject |

Where's computer Science perspective
Great explanation of DSP for the computer scientist
NEWINSIGHT
An outstanding accomplishment in DSP Computer scientists will appreciate the six chapters (12-17) devoted to Architectures and Algorithms. This emphasis is what sets this book apart from the many other DSP books out on the market.I especially enjoyed Chapter 17, Digital Signal Processors. After reading Sections 1-3, I finally understood the significance of the MAC (Multiply-and-Accumulate) operation, and exactly how a DSP processor allows it to be executed in one clock cycle.Section 7 guides the new DSP programmer with Stein's well-conceived CHILD's play system of DSP task development. And on the humorous side, in Section 8 describing DSP Development Teams, we are told, "Your boss has given you five days to come up to speed (in understanding the new system). In your cubicle you find a stack of heavy documents. The first thing you have to learn is what a TLA is."You will find yourself breaking out with stifled bursts of nervous laughter as this all-too-true scenario unfolds. Definitely give this book a try and you'll come to understand and appreciate DSP in a new light from Stein's unique perspective. It will make a welcome and refreshing addition to your DSP library. ... Editorial Review Product Description The Handbook of Signal Processing in Acoustics will compile the techniques and applications of signal processing as they are used in the many varied areas of Acoustics. The Handbook will emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of signal processing in acoustics. Each Section of the Handbook will present topics on signal processing which are important in a specific area of acoustics. These will be of interest to specialists in these areas because they will be presented from their technical perspective, rather than a generic engineering approach to signal processing. Non-specialists, or specialists from different areas, will find the self-contained chapters accessible and will be interested in the similarities and differences between the approaches and techniques used in different areas of acoustics. The Handbook will have many illustrations, tables, and key equations. Signal processing techniques which find major application in different areas of acoustics will be presented from differing perspectives. There will be an extensive index for cross-referencing of material in the book. |

FANTASTIC DSP BOOK
OK, but lacks depth Despite its title, this is a more of a "First Course" in discrete signals and systems. It does not, in fact, derive much at all from first principles. The Nyquist sampling theorem, for example, not proven but taken as a premise. If you want a quick view (or review) of digital signals and filter design without having to plod through proofs knee-deep, this might work for you - it works for me. It is not a title for the most serious student, though.
excellent introduction to DSP If you are the unfortunate victim of a course being taught with Oppenheim and Schafer's muddled text do yourself a favor and get this book as a supplement. It is complete with solved problems, questions with answers (to selected problems), it provides a necessary degree of mathematical rigor without becoming tedious and presents general numerical algorithms for solving major signal processing problems. I took a DSP course from the principal author while he was compiling the notes for this text (and eagerly awaited the publication of his book) and I must say the result isexcellent (so was his course) and very highly recommended. One unfortunate attribute is the poor quality of this book's construction and the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. I purchased the book 10 years ago and the pages have yellowed very badly and the binding broke almost immediately. Although Addison-Wesley generally produces a superior quality book thisone's binding is more like a typical Prentice Hall cheapo. ... Read more |
