Product Description
New Bayesian approach helps you solve tough problems in signal processing with ease

Signal processing is based on this fundamental concept—the extraction of critical information from noisy, uncertain data. Most techniques rely on underlying Gaussian assumptions for a solution, but what happens when these assumptions are erroneous? Bayesian techniques circumvent this limitation by offering a completely different approach that can easily incorporate non-Gaussian and nonlinear processes along with all of the usual methods currently available.

This text enables readers to fully exploit the many advantages of the "Bayesian approach" to model-based signal processing. It clearly demonstrates the features of this powerful approach compared to the pure statistical methods found in other texts. Readers will discover how easily and effectively the Bayesian approach, coupled with the hierarchy of physics-based models developed throughout, can be applied to signal processing problems that previously seemed unsolvable.

Bayesian Signal Processing features the latest generation of processors (particle filters) that have been enabled by the advent of high-speed/high-throughput computers. The Bayesian approach is uniformly developed in this book's algorithms, examples, applications, and case studies. Throughout this book, the emphasis is on nonlinear/non-Gaussian problems; however, some classical techniques (e.g. Kalman filters, unscented Kalman filters, Gaussian sums, grid-based filters, et al) are included to enable readers familiar with those methods to draw parallels between the two approaches.

Special features include:

  • Unified Bayesian treatment starting from the basics (Bayes's rule) to the more advanced (Monte Carlo sampling), evolving to the next-generation techniques (sequential Monte Carlo sampling)
  • Incorporates "classical" Kalman filtering for linear, linearized, and nonlinear systems; "modern" unscented Kalman filters; and the "next-generation" Bayesian particle filters

  • Examples illustrate how theory can be applied directly to a variety of processing problems

  • Case studies demonstrate how the Bayesian approach solves real-world problems in practice

  • MATLAB® notes at the end of each chapter help readers solve complex problems using readily available software commands and point out software packages available

  • Problem sets test readers' knowledge and help them put their new skills into practice

The basic Bayesian approach is emphasized throughout this text in order to enable the processor to rethink the approach to formulating and solving signal processing problems from the Bayesian perspective. This text brings readers from the classical methods of model-based signal processing to the next generation of processors that will clearly dominate the future of signal processing for years to come. With its many illustrations demonstrating the applicability of the Bayesian approach to real-world problems in signal processing, this text is essential for all students, scientists, and engineers who investigate and apply signal processing to their everyday problems. ... Digital images have become mainstream of late notably within HDTV, cell phones, personal cameras, and many medical applications. The processing of digital images and video includes adjusting illumination, manufacturing enlargements/reductions, and creating contrast. This development has made it possible to take long forgotten, badly damaged photos and make them new again with image estimation. It can also help snapshot photographers with image restoration, a method of reducing the influence of an unsteady hand.

Dr. Woods has constructed a book for professionals and graduate students that will give them the thorough understanding of image and video processing that they need in order to contribute to this hot technology's future advances. Examples and problems at the end of each chapter help the reader digest what has just been read. Forged from a theoretical base, this exceptional book develops into an essential guide to hands-on endeavors in signal processing.

4-0 out of 5 stars strong maths treatment
Woods gives a mathematically intensive course in the theory of processing of 2 dimensional images and of video. Roughly the first half of the book is on image processing. Discrete Fourier transforms constitute a large part of this narrative. Space is also given to image reconstruction and enhancement. Not enough room in the book to really cover that thoroughly, but Woods does an ample job of showing simple and effective methods of enhancement.

The second part of the book talks about video processing. And the various encodings possible or necessary, in order to reduce storage to some reasonable size.

Product Description

"Applied Signal Processing: A MATLAB-Based Proof of Concept" benefits readers by including the teaching background of experts in various applied signal processing fields and presenting them in a project-oriented framework. Unlike many other MATLAB-based textbooks which only use MATLAB to illustrate theoretical aspects, this book provides fully commented MATLAB code for working proofs-of-concept. The MATLAB code provided on the accompanying CD-ROM is the very heart of the material. In addition each chapter offers a functional introduction to the theory required to understand the code as well as a formatted presentation of the contents and outputs of the MATLAB code.

Each chapter exposes how digital signal processing is applied for solving a real engineering problem used in a consumer product. The chapters are organized with a description of the problem in its applicative context and a functional review of the theory related to its solution appearing first. Equations are only used for a precise description of the problem and its final solutions. Then a step-by-step MATLAB-based proof of concept, with full code (CD-ROM included), graphs, and comments follows. The solutions are simple enough for readers with general signal processing background to understand and they use state-of-the-art signal processing principles. "Applied Signal Processing: A MATLAB-Based Proof of Concept" is an ideal companion for most signal processing course books. It can be used for preparing student labs and projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book I've been waiting for!
This is an excellent book. The target audience is clearly signal processing engineers that want to learn more about applied speech, audio, image and video processing. The approach taken by the authors is clearly application driven, which is great for understanding complex systems such as hidden Markov models, or Markov random fields. The chapters are very progressive. For example in the chapter on automatic speech recognition, the authors focus on a simple example of a 6-word imaginary language cleverly chosen to show the importance of using the time-evolution of speech and the language grammar. They begin by showing how you can try to recognize words without taking the time-evolution into account, simply by looking at the distribution of the formants which are modeled as Gaussian mixtures (GMM). They show that using this technique, words such as "we" and "you" are indistinguishable (because both contain the sounds 'oo' and 'ee', but in the opposite order). They then introduce the concept of hidden Markov Models (HMM) to show how the time-evolution of the speech signal can be used to distinguish between the two words. They explain in a very clean manner and demonstrate how the parameters of a HMM can be iteratively estimated from the signal during training, then used during the recognition phase. They show that the system still can't distinguish the two words "hear" and "here" because they sound identical, then demonstrate how adding a simple language grammar can be helpful at that point (and you learn about bi-grams etc). All the chapters are laid out in this intuitive and user-friendly manner. I especially enjoyed reading the chapter about mpeg video-encoding, which contains multiple illustrations of intra-frame and inter-frame coding, and show very simply how motion vectors are used to implement motion-compensated coding. Even if you don't open the matlab companion CD (which I haven't done yet!), the book is a great, easy read. I recommend it without reservations! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Intro book on DSP
This is a very good book, specially for someone new to the field or who hasn't work in it for a while. I recommend to check from the authors website for some exercises and extra info.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help for the Rest Of Us
Steve Smith does a great job in explaining the concepts of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) in language almost anyone can understand. He does reference some equations but carefully explains them so you can use them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good basic intro to DSP
I've had some theory classes on filtering and digital signal processing, but they always went right into the math to start with.Next they would provide a very simplistic example, then they would move to the next subject. This book goes the other way.It has a little bit of math and then goes into great detail on how to apply the math to a problem.Since most people don't spend their days doing math proofs, they need to solve a real world problems, this book has already done the heavy lifting by presenting applications of digital signal conditioning that can be used directly.

Yes everyone complains about the BASIC programing in the book, but that is not a big deal since the programs can be easily converted to your favorite code or simulation tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is a joy to read.
The author knows his stuff; instead of hiding behind equations and leaving it up to you to work out what it all means; he tells you what in means and gives you the equations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference - and its free.
I am a mechanical engineer, but lately I have been doing a lot of signal processing and data analysis using MatLab.This book was a great way to get back up to speed. Its clear and concise without geting too bogged down in theory - lots of directly applicable tips and info.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I read this book.It gives full math treatment of 2 dimensional DFT, Z-transform, FFT and so on. Excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars literally, a distinguished 2-D Signal/Image processing book
There are many "image" processing books out there. But what makes this book unique is providing profound knowledge about 2-D signal processing. Most of image processing books just contain fancy images and quick-n-dirty equations for hit-n-run people. But this book provides various algorithms, design methods, and illustrations in terms of both of "2-D signal" and "image" processing. Chapters for filter design are good examples. Unlike most image processing books, it gives comparative illustrations and reference regarding many combinations of FIR, IIR, separable, non-separable, and zero-phase filtering as well as their basic implementation methods. This book is NOT for undergrads or DSP begineers. For those who need more theoritcal backgrounds in 2-D signal and image processing to solve given problems, I surely believe this book quenches the quriosities.

Also, Dr. Lim is one of world-famous DSP scholars after his advisor, Dr. Oppenheim, who actually "created" the world of DSP.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy This Facsimile Edition
Prentice Hall has made a major error in judgment allowing this book to be made available in facsimile (copied) format, especially at the price they are charging. The subtle details of image processing techniques are, in most cases, masked by the poor copy quality. Unfortunately, many college courses are requiring this book and no original hardbound copies seem to be available. If you are only interested in theory, this is a good book.If you are looking for image quality samples, look somewhere else.

3-0 out of 5 stars good graduate textbook
This is a good choice for the main text of a graduate course that extends digital signal processing to images and other two-dimensional data. 2-0 out of 5 stars If you are a student - steer clear!
This was probably written to be a lab manual for a class.I bought it as a professional to polish up on my DSP.It contains "hands on" exercises in Matlab to demonstrate DSP principles. My two main gripes are the same with this book as most other engineering books and are as follows:(1) it is not written to it's intended audience - the student. It is written for the professor (ie the authors colleagues) and (2) it contains no solutions (as a previous reviewer stated).I would also like to point out that Matlab 5 is "old" now and some of the functions used in this book have been renamed in the later version of Matlab.DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS BOOK.

4-0 out of 5 stars A collection of DSP exercises, NOT a textbook
This book is, as the title says, a collection of DSP exercises. What little mention there is of theory, is basically mere keywords and hints to more theoretical textbooks. The student is also expected to have a working knowledge of MATLAB. The focus of the book is getting hands-on experience with DSP, using MATLAB as a very convenient tool to this end. The authors mention that the intended audience is senior undergraduates and first-year graduate students. I'm not sure if I understand the American educational system, but I think that means the audience of this book is expected to have at least two semesters of basic DSP training.

The book is organized in 12 chapters. The chapters are divided into sections that treat more detailed issues. The chapter and section headings are:

1 Basic Signals and Systems

12 Appendix A: Software and Programming Notes

Each section is divided into a number of projects which, in turn, are divided into a number of exercises.

To get an impression of the level these exercises hold, consider the section "Least-Squares Design of FIR Filters" in chapter 8. The section is divided in the projects

Project 1: FIR Filter Design by Least Integral Squared Error
Approximation
Project 2: Design of High-Pass, Band-Pass and Band-Reject
Least-Squared-Error FIR Filters
Project 3: FIR Filter Design Using Window Functions

The two first exercises of project 3 are (p 269):

=====================================================
Exercise 3.1: Design a Low-Pass Filter Using Windows

Design a length-23 linear-phase FIR low-pass filter
with a band edge of w0 = 0.3pi using the following
windows:

a Rectangular
b Triangular or Bartlett
c Hanning
d Hamming
e Blackman

Plot the impulse response, amplitude response and
zero locations of the four(sic!) filters. Compare the
charactersitics of the amplitude response of the five
filters. Do this in terms of the squared error, the
Chebychev error and the transition bandwidth. Compare
them to an optimal Chebychev filter designed with a
transition band and the least-squared-error filter
designed with a spline transition function. How do
you choose a transition bandwidth for a meaningful
comparision?

==================================================
Exercise 3.2: Design a Band-Pass Filter Using Windows

Take the band-pass filter designed in exercise 2.5
and apply the five windows. Analyze the amplitude
response.

====================================================

Hardly newbie material, in my opinion. The student really needs to know the material (Ex. 3.1) and has to be able to generate useful answers from a very generic job assignment (Ex. 3.2).

These are exactly the reasons why I find this type of exercises attractive (and perhaps why others may be repelled by them). The focus is consistently on what the authors call "learning by discovery" (which probably has little to do with the TV channel...): The student has to find the theory, implement and test most functions himself and has to process synthetic and real data (data and some auxillary functions are available via the www from MathWorks), and also evaluate the results of his efforts. This is exactly the kind of hands-on experience most DSP courses (and perhaps even DSP training programs) lack these days, and what makes this book so very useful.

Some conclusions based on a couple of hours browsing:

- This is NOT a textbook for learning neither DSP
nor MATLAB.
- The reader is expected to have working knowledge
of MATLAB and a firm theoretical basis in DSP.
- This book provides some badly needed hands-on
traning programs.
- The book consistently aims for building insight
and intuition.
- The book is perhaps too tuned towards use in a
class with an instructor.

2-0 out of 5 stars Evaluation depends on individual needs and wants
My evaluation for this book, 2 stars, is based on my specific needs and wants that were the motivation for my purchasing this book, and resulted in disappointment.

I'm a first-semester graduate student in electrical engineering, and wanted to self-learn a lot of MATLAB and its uses with DSP, so that I could get a head's start in gaining the background I would later need for my research in DSP. I knew this book was a collection of exercises in which you create MATLAB programs (.m files) to solve DSP problems and explore various DSP topics. However, I also expected the book to give full solutions to the problems, working through the MATLAB scripts for you so that you could learn the DSP applications of MATLAB through practice.

Unfortunately, I was wrong... The book is divided into a series of projects, and with each project there is a brief explanation of the related theory, and then several problems which tell you to program MATLAB to do so and so, sometimes along with a few hints.... and NO SOLUTIONS ARE GIVEN. In fact, it's basically just a collection of problems. I think it's meant more for TEACHERS... to assign the problems in the book as homework for students in their DSP classes. In that respect, it is natural that there are no solutions included in the book.

In summary, this is not a book you want to buy if you're looking for something you can use to STUDY and LEARN how to apply MATLAB to DSP. It is essentially just a list of DSP problems which require you to use MATLAB. I'm sure the problems themselves are beautifully-crafted problems that would give you lots of insight and grasp of concepts once you have given lots of effort into them and then saw the solutions.... As just a book of problems, I'm sure it would be a top-quality book worthy of 5 stars (after all, look at its authors). But if nobody gives you the solutions, you can't learn a great deal from just the problems and briefly-explained theory.

Just make sure you know what this book is about and whether it really is what you're looking for before you purchase it. I'm planning on returning mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Applications Book
I have the previous edition of the book (Using Matlab 4) and this review is on that version... I find this book to be an excellent APPLICATIONSbook. It is not intended to be a Matlab Primer; you are supposed to knowMatlab programming already. It is also not intended to be a DSP Primer. This book takes the basic DSP knowledge you already have and allows you toexpand on it by applying it to a variety of real problems, like radarranging or speech processing or filtering. It also deepens your knowledgeby giving you drill problems that go deep into the workings of the DFT andother basic DSP tools. I had the good luck of taking a couple of DSPcourses with McClellan and Schafer when they were writing this book andthey used to hand problems from the book as special homework after they hadtaught the underlying material. Doing these exercises after you know thebasics is an excellent way to cement that knowlege and become moreproficient both in matlab and in problem solving.

2-0 out of 5 stars Empty Promises

Product Description
Digital signal processing plays a central role in the development of modern communication and information processing systems. The theory and application of signal processing is concerned with the identification, modelling and utilisation of patterns and structures in a signal process. The observation signals are often distorted, incomplete and noisy and therefore noise reduction, the removal of channel distortion, and replacement of lost samples are important parts of a signal processing system.

The fourth edition of Advanced Digital Signal Processing and Noise Reduction updates and extends the chapters in the previous edition and includes two new chapters on MIMO systems, Correlation and Eigen analysis and independent component analysis. The wide range of topics covered in this book include Wiener filters, echo cancellation, channel equalisation, spectral estimation, detection and removal of impulsive and transient noise, interpolation of missing data segments, speech enhancement and noise/interference in mobile communication environments. This book provides a coherent and structured presentation of the theory and applications of statistical signal processing and noise reduction methods.

  • Two new chapters on MIMO systems, correlation and Eigen analysis and independent component analysis

  • Comprehensive coverage of advanced digital signal processing and noise reduction methods for communication and information processing systems

  • Examples and applications in signal and information extraction from noisy data

  • Comprehensive but accessible coverage of signal processing theory including probability models, Bayesian inference, hidden Markov models, adaptive filters and Linear prediction models

Advanced Digital Signal Processing and Noise Reduction is an invaluable text for postgraduates, senior undergraduates and researchers in the fields of digital signal processing, telecommunications and statistical data analysis. It will also be of interest to professional engineers in telecommunications and audio and signal processing industries and network planners and implementers in mobile and wireless communication communities. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An important book for some of its content
This is a very good book for covering some topics related to approximation by fixed and floating point filters, including orthogonal filter structures; I don't know any other book which covers this as well.

It can be an introductory book, but it's not the easiest; this probably explains the two poor reviews. It's nice to have the introductory material so the more advanced reader can easily refer to how Mullis and Roberts do things.

If someone has a better, perhaps more recent, survey that includes the material in the second half of Mullis and Roberts, I'd like to know about it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Digital Signal Processing
The book do cover interesting topics, but most of the really useful things on it are as homeworks assignments. Therefore to get something out of it you got to work (cough** suffer) with it's exercises. It would be nice to see the solutions manual of it to get 100% of its material understood.
Books like these i score them with 1 point. If an author writes a book he should put everything on it, not holding back information.

2-0 out of 5 stars Has potential, but needs major rewrite
The book is neither for beginner nor advanced studies. The book weaves its way in and out of many topics in the theory of linear systems, filter design, spectral estimation, stochastic processes, parameter estimation, system identification, algorithm design, etc. confusing the reader with a superficial treatment of each topic. This is not a unified treatment: Each topic is introduced with some hints to fundamental results (inadequately explained) and then forgotten. The only topic adequately addressed is the theory of finite register effect. In a nut shell, if you already have mastered the topics treated in this book, then you can see what the authors are talking about without increasing your understanding, but I feel sorry for anyone who tries to learn these topics form this textbook. If I may suggest a different title for this book: "Mysteries of signal processing not revealed."

5-0 out of 5 stars Best filter design text
This is the best DSP reference for filter design. It is especially strong in state variable techiniques. It is not a good first book, but rather one to fill out one's knowledge of DSP.Great book, no hand waving.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have only one pure-DSP reference and this is it
I have scanned other DSP books that are out there and have not found any others which I would add to my library to replace this one. There are others that may supplement it, but none eclipses it.At the same time, this text is not intended for the uninitiated and seems targeted towards agraduate DSP specialty. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A gentle, yet thorough Introduction to DSP for the TMS320C6713 and TMS320C6416
This is the 2nd edition of the book by Rulph Chassaing and Donals Reay...I don't have the first edition so I cannot comment on the differences. This book is a lime green and black cover. Very appealing! I am surprised just how gentle the book steps through the subject matter before it gets heavy into IIR, FIR, FFT and Adaptive Filters. I haven't reached the end of the book yet. I'm going through every excercise and I find them helpful as I go along, sort of building blocks that depend upon one another. The book is incremental in the order of difficulty. I'm sure some of the DSP experts can jump around, but that is not my tactic with this book. DSP is not for the faint hearted. This book is definitelly 100% geek oriented, technical and to the point. I'm am going through it cover to cover. I love the excercises with the GEL capabilities. They are nice, because they are not just static pieces of code. They introduce dynamics to what otherwise could be just another boring fixed frequency and gain sinusoid. The authors seem to be very thorough on the waveform generation portion. Methods used are LUTs, Mathematically Generated, Matlab generated and imported waveforms (very nice approach). Some approaches I have not seen before and I'm glad the authors chose to be very experimental about their sinusoid generation. There are fun excercises spread throughout this book, I can clearly see this gazing through the chapters and I cannot wait to get to the more exciting chapters such as building an FFT based graphic equalizer, speach synthesizer, digital quadrature encoder and so much more. I will probably come back throughout time and give a more adequate review of the book, but in my opinion, it is well laid out and although not particularly a beginner's journey through DSP, I would say why not? Just grab "Understanding Digital Signal Processing" by Richard G. Lyons and additionally "Digital Signal Processing Using MATLAB" by Proakis to get you through the tougher maths and some Matlab based proofs. There are some Matlab excercises toward the end of the book in the last few chapters. This book is generally intended for senior Undergrad or first year Graduate course in Computer Engineering. It requires knowledge of some C and linear equations. I found it very straighforward to understand with some help from the afforementioned books from Lyons and Proakis. Watch out for some small directory issues with the DSK. Depending on which version you use it may be a little pesky having to change endianess in the compiler options. I found I had to do that for every example in the book. Tidious, but not the end of the world. It's not the authors fault. I think more of a project compatability issue with the older DSKs. The price to update to the latest DSK is $99.00 on the Spectrum Digital site. Maybe worth it to some folks to upgrade or get the latest DSKs. I also find it interesting that in at least one of the chapters in the book the authors mention wiring up two DSKs one for signal generation and another for detection! All I have to say to that is...Are you kidding me? That's > $1K in DSKs...Either way, I'm going to purchase the second one, I can see that it is necessary. Couldn't a sound card be used to generate the required signal patterns? Am I missing something...Ugh! Anyway, great book and kudos for the authors. I'm sure many folks in DSP will find this useful and will write more thorough reviews than I've been able to write to this point! I will write more on the next pass...Enjoy your TMS320C6713/TMS320C6416 and your Chassaing/Reay DSP tutorials! They are worth every penny and they make DSP learning fun and less painful! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Note from the book's Editor
This is the book's Editor, Richard Lyons. I was happy to read the positive Customer Reviews of this book, and I thank the reviewers for taking the time to post their comments. However, I'd like to respond to one reviewer's comment that, "Half a (sic) material is repition (sic) from Lyons other title." That comment is likely to mislead many readers.
In reality only four of this book's 28 chapters cover DSP topics comparable to the material I discuss in my earlier "Understanding Digital Signal Processing" book. While I am one of the book's contributors, there are 29 other engineers who contributed their own DSP material to this unique book.

To describe the content of the book, below I repeat the book's Preface.
------------------
PREFACE:

This book presents recent advances in digital signal processing (DSP) to simplify, or increase the computational speed of, common signal processing operations. The topics here comprise clever DSP "tricks of the trade" not covered in traditional DSP textbooks. This material is practical, real-world, DSP tips and tricks as opposed to the traditional highly-specialized, math-intensive, research subjects directed at industry researchers and university professors. Here we go beyond the standard DSP fundamentals textbook and present new, but tried-n-true, clever implementations of digital filter design, spectrum analysis, signal generation, high-speed function approximation, and various other DSP functions.
With this book we wished to create a resource that is relevant to the needs of the working DSP engineer by helping bridge the theory-to-practice gap between introductory DSP textbooks and the esoteric, difficult to understand, academic journals. The goal of this book is to make the practicing-DSP engineer reader say, "Wow that's pretty neat--I have to remember this, maybe I can use it sometime." While this book will be useful to experienced DSP engineers, due to its gentle tutorial style it will also be of considerable value to the DSP beginner.
The mathematics used herein is simple algebra and the arithmetic of complex numbers, making this material accessible to a wide engineering and scientific audience. In addition, each chapter contains a Reference List for those readers wishing to learn more about a given DSP topic. Fortunately, the chapter topics in this book are written in a standalone manner, so the subject matter can be read in any desired order.
The contributors to this book make up a dream team of experienced DSP engineer-authors. They are not only knowledgeable in signal processing theory, they are "make it work" engineers who build working DSP systems. (They actually know which end of the soldering iron is hot.) However, unlike many authors whose writing seems to say, "I understand this topic and I defy you to understand it", our contributors go all-out to convey as much DSP understanding as possible. As such the chapters of this book are postcards from our skilled contributors on their endless quest for signal processing's Holy Grail: accurate processing results at the price of a bare minimum of computations.
We welcome you to this DSP tricks of the trade guidebook. The Editor and the IEEE Press hope you find it valuable.
Richard G, Lyons
-----------------
I beg your tolerance for my assigning '5 stars' to my comment here. I did so because I'm convinced this book is an distinctively-useful addition to the literature of DSP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid
Solid treatment of techniques. Half a material is repition from Lyons other title. But if you dont have that, its a solid one. Little expensive for its size though.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Indispensible Desktop Reference!
As a DSP (digital signal processing) practioneer for over 4 decades, I give this book my highest praise. It's an extensive "how-to-do-it" compilation of tips and tricks that lead to efficient processor design. The presentations are lucid and the DSP configurations are well proven and established. This book is a ready reference and is absolutely indispensible to anybody who works in DSP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique tricks and tips for advanced signal processing
I wouldn't advise that students of digital signal processing buy this book. It is a well-written and unique tool for the professional, but it will likely not be useful for students unless you are working on some specialized project or Ph.D. and need advanced and specialized help. The tips are well-written, thorough, and well-illustrated. Part one, on efficient digital signal filtering, will be helpful for anyone from novice to professional. The rest of the book, however, deals with specific and complex topics. Quite frankly, Lyon's excellent book "Understanding Digital Signal Processing" includes most of the tips and tricks in part one and is aimed at the novice at an affordable cost. That book is a much better choice for students. I was looking for discussions on implementation of the arctangent function - don't ask me why - and this was the only book that had an accessible section on the subject. It is THAT kind of book. Have your copy of Oppenheim & Schafer's "Discrete-time Signal Processing" handy, though, because in explaining the details of some of these more difficult subjects the background material had to sacrificed for the sake of producing a compact volume that flows well. Highly recommended for the right audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can not be anything else
Rich is a unique author in the world of engineering writing. Many years ago, when his first book came out, I was so inspired that I found him. Didn't take too much looking, he was local then in the SF Bay area. I had to tell him personally that his book was awesome! (pre-cliche AWESOME!). Well, he himself turned out be as unique as his book!

"Understanding Digital Processing" made such an impression on me that I have been trying to write a book on communications ever since (chapters at complextoreal.com) If all engineering books were written as well as Rich writes them, we would not have so much fear of sciences and math.

Be be honest, I have just ordered this book. It has not arrived yet. BUT, I am sooooo sure, it is going to a great follow-on, as great as the first. - Charan Langton

Animals and plants live in changing environmental conditions which require adaptation in order to cope with this. Some of these environmental changes serve as signals which have to be "sensed" and interpreted correctly by the organisms to initiate the adaptation. This signal processing is based on biochemical, molecular and neuronal processes which are discussed in this book. All examples given underline that continuous adjustment of physiological functions is an essential requirement for life and survival in complex changing environments. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a GREAT book
I LOVE this book for its exemplary clarity, conciseness and rigor. I liked having both the informal proofs which involve distributions given in parallel with the elementary proofs, thus presenting discrete signals both as sequences and as distributions. The book is written without any annoying mathematical sloppiness, quite common in DSP literature; yet, it is entirely accessible for everyone who is willing to invest an appropriate effort. Also, this is a real TEXTBOOK rather than a reference book, which keeps its size manageable and non-intimidating. In short, in my opinion, this is a must-have book for any student wishing to learn DSP with genuine understanding.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use design of digital filters
I'm an electronic engineer.
I wanted to learn how to design digital filters. This book is very straight forward and all the matlab macros are included so that you can implement the filter design functions by yourself. I used visual basic in Excel. Its the best book so far I have read on how to design digital filters and what is the difference between the kind of filters and windows you choose. Now it is much easier to understand how to use the Matlab functions needed. It thorougly describes pros and cons of different filter types. Both FIR and IIR filters are covered.
For IIR filters different implementations are described.
A little about number of bits needed for coefficients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for those desiring in-depth understanding of DSP
Using a systematic approach this book starts at the very basics of signal processing through showing the analogies between window and filter designs and ending at more advanced topics such as quantization effects and random signal processing.

While the notation used in this book is not considered standard, it is consistent and saves from errors (the d for the DFT transform clears many ambiguities of other notation systems)

This book is best fit for advanced undergraduates and graduate students as well as anyone dealing with signal processing at a theoretical level. I have used this book as a textbook on my first course in DSP and later based upon its knowledge wrote a lab experiment in DSP and in particular consequences of quantization effects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent DSP undergraduate-level (and beyond) course book
I took DSP basic course at my final B.Sc.EE year intending to take DSP as one of my majors. The book proved to be an excellent study resource (IMHO, of course), providing the main DSP concepts in very clear manner backed up by an examples. The stuff is presented in very thoughtfull sequence, similar to regular DSP basic course sillabus, explanations are easy to comprehend and math is easily understood (bearing appropriate math background).
I used the book solely for the study of the course, found it to be the best learning core, allows you to grasp DSP fundamentials, at least to the level necessary for basic DSP B.Sc.EE course.
The book material stratches far beyond the basic DSP course that is usually taught for B.Sc.EE, however I have yet proceeded to that material, hence cannot vouch for that material, albeit intend to go further into it later.
Hadn't chance to compare this book with its main rival (Oppenhaim and Shafer), however so far found Porat's book leaving very little to be desired to look over to others.
Bottom line - highly recommended for B.Sc.EE level DSP study and probably beyond that.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely useless as a textbook
The author has managed to cram an impressive range of topics into a relatively slim volume. He does so, of course, by covering hardly any of them in any appreciable depth. The textual descriptions are, as the other reviews point out, generally confusing and of little value; the meat of the book is in the proofs that accompany each result.Unfortunately, these too sometimes use an unconventional notation and worse, are poorly typeset: there are often two or three steps combined into a single line and it will take the reader a few passes to figure out what is being shown.

Once you've worked through the proofs, you're hardly done; many of the most interesting corollaries of each main result are discussed only in the problems following that topic. The problems are tersely and often vaguely stated, and there are no hints or answers given anywhere in the text. Many have an open-ended structure (i.e. asking "What can be inferred from ..." instead of "Show that ..."), which is a great format for an interactive seminar but absolutely horrible for self-study.Many of the problems can be solved only after having had the proper insight on a previous problem, but there is no explicit clue to this dependence in most of the problem statements.

The target audience of the book is not clear; the lack of guidance, clear explanation, or useful examples make it clearly inappropriate as an introductory text, but the terseness and the fact that so many important results are buried in unanswered questions makes it of questionable value as a reference for those already well-versed in the field. Some of the problems might provide interesting ideas for lecture topics or exam questions, but the book itself has little value as a study aid.Highly recommended for sadistic professors trying to carve out a reputation as the toughest SOB in the department or math enthusiasts looking for a way to kill some time during a long prison sentence; everyone else should steer clear. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Signal Processing Bible
At under 500 pages, this is a concise book on Transforms and Signal Processing. It makes an excellent reference for those beginning DSP or Telecommunications courses. I particularly find the tables within the book helpful when remembering transform rules.

Make no mistake, this is a hard subject, but having studied under Leland Jackson, and having moved on to graduate courses in probability and DSP, I've found this text exceedingly useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Straight Forward Intro to EE Signals
Jackson's clear and concise text is the best example I know of of what an EE textbook can be, given the varied (and poor) backgrounds of junior EE students in the 2000's. He manages to get right to the main points, by introducing the pertinent theoretical and physical concepts with a minimum of distracting (and irrelevant) algebraic details. There is a perfect balance of 'theory' and 'examples' to enable any serious and literateEE undergraduate to master the basic concepts and ideas of Fourier transforms, Fourier series, Laplace transforms, and related continuous-time systems. Jackson's treatment of the DFT and its variants, as well as its relationship to the continuous-time transforms, is superior to all of the competing EE texts, and there are MANY!, that I have seen over the past 15 years. The book is a good size to actually USE, in stark contrast to the voluminous, inflated cartoon picture books/encyclopedias that try to pass as student 'textbooks'.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality
This book was very hard to understand. It had sections that were poorly organized with a total disregard for extensive examples. Examples that were shown were not only short, but were unrepresentative of problems that were shown in the Problem section at the end of each chapter. I also found itextremely frustrating that the author insisted on including problems in theproblem section that required him to basically add full explanations andinclude indepth lessons for each. The author of this book clearlyoverestimates the knowledge held by most beginner Signal students.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is hard to understand for the average student.
This book was given a poor rating by me because it has very few, and verypoor examples. It is not a good book to learn from ... Read more
