5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This book is a very comprehensive treatment of semiconductor optics. At the begining, I was hesitant to buy it. So I borrowed an older edition from our library. I was so much impressed, that I bought my own copy. A colleague of mine is so much impressed by the lucidity of arguments in the book, that he reads a passage from it for us at work every once in a while. This book spans the breadth of the subject from basic the fundamental concepts of optics and solid state physics to the more advanced such as semiconductor Bloch equations. I highly recommend this book. If I teach semiconductor optics at any time, this would be the textbook that I will use (by the way, it has excellent problems at the end of each chapter.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for experimentalists in semiconductor optics
This book covers the basics of optical processes in semiconductors from an experimentalist perspective. Therefore the theory is a bit light, but all the concepts are there as well as many useful insights. An excellentintroduction to the subject.

Product Description
This invaluable textbook presents the basic elements needed to understand and research into semiconductor physics. It deals with elementary excitations in bulk and low-dimensional semiconductors, including quantum wells, quantum wires and quantum dots. The basic principles underlying optical nonlinearities are developed, including excitonic and many-body plasma effects. Fundamentals of optical bistability, semiconductor lasers, femtosecond excitation, the optical Stark effect, the semiconductor photon echo, magneto-optic effects, as well as bulk and quantum-confined Franz-Keldysh effects, are covered. The material is presented in sufficient detail for graduate students and researchers with a general background in quantum mechanics. This fifth edition includes an additional chapter on 'Quantum Optical Effects' where the theory of quantum optical effects in semiconductors is detailed. Besides deriving the 'semiconductor luminescence equations' and the expression for the stationary luminescence spectrum, the results are presented to show the importance of Coulombic effects on the semiconductor luminescence and to elucidate the role of excitonic populations. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good one time reading.
The book is truly a required reading for anyone, who wants to work in the field of semiconductor opticas. The choice of topics and the presentation are excellent. However, the book does not go really deep in any of the topics, therefore I doubt that anyone will read this book more than once or use it as a reference.
Some topic and, especially, equations may seem too overused in later books and review papers, but apparently this book was the first to present them and here they are truly enlightening.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get this handbook! Nothing will ever come close to it.
I'm new to the semiconductor manufacturing business. Getting this book is definitely the right thing I've done. This book provides all the things i wanted to know about semiconductor manufacturing. With over 1100 pages, this book is hard to resist. It covers almost all the technology required for making semiconductor IC. Even though it does not give much details, but the coverage of the topic is sufficient. In addition, the generousity of the authors to provide ample references at the end of each chapter is amazing. One will have plenty of time to search through the references for further info. I suggest that people who are in the semiconductor manufacturing field to get their hands on it. One thing that can be improved regarding to the presentation of this handbook, is the way the diagrams are displayed. Maybe the publisher should consider printing them in glossy paper as some diagrams looks very poor as if they just come out from the photocopy machine.

This book is not for begineer like me, I graduated as a Computer Engineer and really have problem learning this book. I suggest to read the Semiconductor Fundamentals same author before buying this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Complicated material written in a very concise manner.
On a quick scan at first the material covered in this book appears intimidating. It covers concepts of quantum physics like Schrödinger equation; Blotch theorem;Kronig-Penney model; Brillouin zones and then covers the semiconductor physics as Fermi levels; carrier transportation. The book covers a lot of fairly complicated material in a very concise and explanatory manner.Just by the sheer difficulty of the material; I would suggest taking a course to help alleviate the pain of self-tutoring.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice book
Very nice book. I especially liked the manner in which minimal essentials of solid-state physics was covered. In a short time you can get to know quite a bit of basic essentials of solid-state that a semiconductor device engr needs to know.

    Product Description
An Introduction to Semiconductor Devices by Donald Neamen provides an understanding of the characteristics, operations and limitations of semiconductor devices. In order to provide this understanding, the book brings together the fundamental physics of the semiconductor material and the semiconductor device physics.

This new text provides an accessible and modern presentation of material.Quantum mechanic material is minimal, and the most advanced material is designated with an icon. This modern approach meands that coverage of the MOS transistor preceeds the material on the bipolar transitor, which reflects the dominance of MOS technology in today's world.

Excellent pedagogy is present throughout the book in the form of interesting chapters openers, worked examples, a variety of exercises, key terms, and end of chapter problems. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars no/little quantum mechanics needed
The book is an up to date introduction to the understanding of current semiconductor devices and their manufacture. Perhaps the best sign of this is the correct emphasis on describing the Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOS) circuitry. Older texts go into more detail about bipolar technology - the Ebers-Moll model for an npn transistor and all that. But for over 10 years, MOS has been the dominant technology and students should concentrate on getting a clear understanding of it from the book.

There is still a description of bipolar, and of the bipolar-MOS amalgam.

The device physics of junctions and single transistors is competently done. The book is designed for a student who has had an undergraduate course in classical physics, but who perhaps hasnever seen quantum mechanics before. So devices that exhibit pure quantum behaviour, like Esaki/tunnel diodes aren't really gone into. ... Read more

    Product Description
Quantum mechanical phenomena-including energy bands, energy gaps, holes, and effective mass-constitute the majority of properties unique to semiconductor materials. Understanding how these properties affect the electrical characteristics of semiconductors is vital for engineers working with today's nanoscale devices. Designed for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses, Principles of Semiconductor Devices covers the dominant practical applications of semiconductor device theory and applies quantum mechanical concepts and equations to develop the energy-band model. The text presents quantum mechanics through examples related to the energy-band model, providing students with a deeper understanding of the energy-band diagrams used to explain semiconductor device operation. The semiconductor theory is directly linked to the electronic layout and design of integrated circuits. The author has divided the text into four parts. Part I explains semiconductor physics, and Part II presents the principles of operation and modeling of the fundamental junctions and transistors. Part III discusses the diode, MOSFET, and BJT topics that are needed for circuit design. Part IV introduces photonic devices, microwave FETs, negative-resistance diodes, and power devices. The chapters and the sections in each chapter are organized hierarchically. Core material is presented first, followed by advanced topics, allowing instructors to select more rigorous, design-related topics as they see fit. ... Read more

I have only currently read up to chapter two. Here is what I've noticed about the book. The content in the chapters is very straightfoward and to the point. The summary at the end of the chapter does a good job reviewing the main points and formulas that were in the text. However I found that the questions at the end of the chapter are somewhat vague about what they are asking for and you have to assume several things to get an answer.

1-0 out of 5 stars seriously come on
I don't even understand how a textbook like this can be printed with so many errors in it. Even some key equations are riddled with errors that have to be tracked down. It is a major waste of time trying to find where the author went wrong in the example problems. If you can't get the basic algebra correct consistently, why should I trust what you say about anything in this book? If you get stuck with this book for a course I really pity you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor writing style
Extremely poor teaching tool. Not only are the majority of methods outdated (albeit that is not the authors fault), but the ones that are still being used today are poorly written. The 300 pages of material should have been 600. Gary May should not be writing books; his style is confusing and indirect. I am also very disappointed that Sze's name is on the book. A waste of money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
I bought this book in a hurry when browsing in a textbook store with limited time. I took it because I saw Sze's name on it. Then I regret...

The materials covered in this book is far from extensive (the book only weighs in 352 pages.) The writing and presentation was mid-level at best. There is hardly anything that you cannot learn or cannot learn better from other process textbooks than from this one. And this book is pricy, a common for all Sze's books.

I think Sze abused his reputation a bit in recent years by coauthoring and publishing a few textbooks. Those books are only of mid-quality and bear very little "Sze's style," which makes me wonder how much time did Sze actually spend in authoring those books. I have become cautious when buying Sze's books now.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Text Book EVER!
I'm a student at Georgia Tech, and for some reason the professors there think that they know how to write textbooks.I've seen a lot of bad textbooks, but this one takes the cake.I can easily label this the worst textbook I've ever used. The book is full of errors, and the homework problems are poorly designed as most of the times you have to consult third party sources to solve them (my entire class agrees).Gary May, if you're reading this (and I hope you are), I want to thank you for writing the most disgusting textbook I've ever read. You clearly know what you are talking about, but you clearly don't know how to talk about it or how to teach it.I honestly don't understand how you expect students to learn from this garbage.I understand most people looking to buy this don't have an option as it is class material, but if you do have any option in this purchase I highly recommend you look elsewhere.I'd give this 0 stars if I could. ... Low-dimensional systems have revolutionized semiconductor physics and had a tremendous impact on technology. Using simple physical explanations, with reference to examples from actual devices, this book introduces the general principles essential to low-dimensional semiconductors. The author presents a formalism that describes low-dimensional semiconductor systems, studying two key systems in detail: the two-dimensional electron gas, employed in field-effect transistors, and the quantum well, whose optical properties have multiple applications in lasers and other opto-electronic devices. The book will be invaluable to undergraduate and first-year graduate physics or electrical engineering students taking courses in low-dimensional systems or heterostructure device physics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful reference
As a graduate student working on semiconductor devices, this book is an incredible reference. Davies only assumes about an undergraduate familiarity with the subject, making the text a great "bridge" from core textbooks to research papers. There have been many occasions when, upon not understanding a paper, reading a section in this book made everything clear.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a pretty good book for the condensed matter physics nerds...
I found the material interesting and I think it has a good balance of both theoretical material and practical information for experimental applications, so it should satiate most nerds interested in learning more about things like quantum wells, wires, and dots, approximation methods such as k.p perturbation theory, the quantum hall effect, and much more! There's a lot of focus on the optical properties of these low-d structures, which is good as there's really no better way to learn about the properties of matter than to study its interactions with light. HOWEVER, there's one thing about this book that drives me absolutely insane! It's a recurring annoyance, and pops up when he starts working with the Schrodinger equation and calculating the eigenvalues and eigenstates of electrons in electric fields. And that's his decision to use the letter "F" to represent the ELECTRIC field. His reason for doing this is to "avoid confusion with the energy." Well, aside from the fact that he uses a script "E" to represent the energy eigenvalues, which is easily differentiated from the normal "E", he really should have taken a minute to think about what might be confusing about using "F" for the E-field! Uhhhh, HELLo! Does the word "FORCE" ring a bell? Newton's second law, big motherfracking F = ma! For goodness sakes, don't ya think that might be a little confusing??? I know it's a niggling detail, but in the interest of full disclosure, I'm just letting the world know the pain and suffering I had to endure while reading the text. I don't wish it upon anyone, especially my fellow space cadets! :D

1-0 out of 5 stars incomprehensible
Possibly with strong background in Quantum Mechanics and Advanced Mathematics - the book is readable.Otherwise, the authors incomplete explanations make the book entirely incomprehensible.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent introduction to quantum structures
i read this book and it seems to be very readable. it explains the physics behind the quantum heterostructures in a lucid and tractable manner. i recommend this volume before reading the treatise by weisbach & vinter. those who want to start research on quantum structures will find this book as an invaluable resource. its comprehensive and almost exhaustive.

5-0 out of 5 stars A first taste of mesoscopic physics
Readable introductions to mesoscopic physics are few and far between, many being either far too simplistic and naive or too mired in formalism. Davies gives clear and lucid discussions of such topics as electron confinement in quantum wells, the integral quantum Hall effect, quantum point contacts, and MODFET's/HEMT's. Although by no means extensive and in depth, Davies does point out simplifications and refers the interested reader to relevant references for more details. Overall, it is a balanced introduction.

This book is a useful point of entry for undergraduates to low-dimensional semiconductor physics. Reading this book is good preparation for more advanced and specialized literature including: Solid State Physics vol. 44 ed. Ehrenreich and Turnbull; Perspectives in Quantum Hall Effects, Das Sarma and Pinczuk.

As with any new text, there are errata but an up to date webpage of corrections is maintained by the author. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good reference
This is a good reference book on semiconductor physics, particularly on the basics. I will not suggest it for beginners though, but advanced graduate students may learn a lot of the basics, which they almost always think they know but actually do not. Examples juxtaposed with the text are helpful. But too much math many times obscure the physics that the book intends to teach. Nevertheless a good reference book for a library. ... Read more
