Easy to read, informative, comprehendible.
A great textbook
Illuminating Systems Safety Overview While useful for engineers (particularly in the chemical processing or nuclear fields), this book is written in comprehensible terms that do not require an engineering background or technical education to understand. In fact, I believe that the biggest beneficiaries of this book are not engineers at all, but non-technical managers, who desperately need to understand safety systems, but often don't. In fact the chapter on Safety Management should be required reading for any manager in a safety critical environment, as it is an excellent "how to" guide to safety management of complex systems. This chapter has examples of correct safety management, and more importantly, excellent examples of the perils of management unwillingness to prioritize safety. The case study of the Nypro UK cyclohexane plant explosion in Flixborough, England is the best detailed, and has universal applications to safety systems across varying industries. The loss of the shuttle 'Challenger' is also reviewed from a systems safety vantage point, but while there are many errors to be analyzed and learned from there, more of the lessons are industry specific than are the lessons from the Flixborough example. I used this book in a graduate class on systems safety. This is one of the best safety books I have seen, and is the most concise text on systems safety that I have ever read, far better, for instance, than the works of Perrow. Mr. Bahr is to be commended for his work; I look forward to reading more by him in the future.
A good book for the student and the experienced professional |

Decent executive level intro
Overall a good book with some problems. However, this year I started teaching from this book. And when you teach you really discoverthe shortcomings of a text. It is frustrating when the author uses acronymswithout explaination. I've also been running into minor math errors oroversights in formulas (e.g. defining a function f(x) and using 't' in theequation as the independent variable). I think the attempt to cover allof the material resulted in a brief overview of these areas and took awayfrom the quality of coverage. Still, I haven't seen a better book on thetopic and if the worst you can say is that it could have been better, thatsnot bad. ... Read more |

The book explains how to look beyond the utility of machinery and equipment to how they will actually be used on a construction site_and thereby spot potential hazards in advance. Safety expert David MacCollum presents examples of the 50 most common construction hazards, showing how they can be eliminated by means of proven design techniques and technologies. He explains how to prevent falls from elevations with safe access systems, get rid of blind zones behind mobile equipment, utilize control systems that cannot be unintentionally activated, avoid crane accidents, and much more. Packed with detailed illustrations, Construction Safety Engineering Principles enables construction professionals to: Improve Safety Conditions on Any Construction Site! |

Essential reading for traffic engineers Most geometric designers believe that, if they have the Green Book and the Highway Capacity Manual on theirbookshelves, they don=t need anything more other than, possibly, theirclient=s Geometric Design Manual.Wrong - this belief is about as usefulas belief in the tooth fairy or the four-leaf clover.McGraw-Hill has justpublished a new book, authored by Ruediger Lamm, Basil Psarianos, TheodorMailander et al.It contains 26 chapters running to just over 1000 pagesand can be bought from www.amazon.com. For any designer who isreally interested in getting road users from origin to destination inreasonable safety, this book is a must. Lamm and his co-authors point outthat design standards are nothing more than just limits and it is thecombination of elements, all of which would conceivably be to values equalto or much higher than the specified minima, that dictate whether a road istruly safe or not.For example, the long tangent followed by a 120 mradius curve could, perfectly accurately, be described as being to a designspeed of 60 km/h.The accident rate would, however, beawe-inspiring. Many authors have pointed out in the past that the truehallmark of a safe design is its consistency and have offered variousmethods whereby the consistency of design can be evaluated.I submit thatLamm et al have provided the definitive measures of consistency of design. They go further and offer methods whereby necessary design improvements canalso be quantified in terms of the enhancement in the level of safety thatthey bring about. To this end, they have carried out a major internationalstudy of the accident rates associated with the dimensions of the variouselements of the road. For example, with regard to horizontal alignment, they propose three criteria for evaluating the quality of design.Theseare: Harmonising design speed and operating speed Achieving consistencyin operating speed Providing adequate driving dynamic safety Models areoffered whereby the operating and design speeds can be assessed and, consequently, the three criteria quantified.Ultimately, design elementsare classified into three levels of quality (generally good, fair or baddesign) based on a comparison of the calculated values with thresholdvalues that the authors have established as being reasonably indicative ofthe various levels of design. The vertical alignment and cross-sectionare also exhaustively addressed with very important chapters on sightdistance and three-dimensional alignment. The latter is a major problembecause a perfect vertical alignment incorrectly superimposed on a perfecthorizontal alignment can still have disastrous consequences, as the authorspoint out. The safety audit process is still in its infancy in mostcountries and, where applied, it relies totally on the experience andjudgment of very senior designers. Editorial Review Product Description Covers a Host of Groundbreaking Techniques Thermal processing is known to effectively control microbial populations in food, but the procedure also has a downside―it can break down the biochemical composition of foods, resulting in a marked loss of sensory and nutritional quality. Processing Effects on Safety and Quality of Foods delineates three decades of advances made in processing techniques that produce microbiologically safe foods, while maintaining their sensory and nutritive properties. Addresses the Entire Food Processing Industry With an international team of more than 35 renowned contributors, this book presents evaluation techniques that yield reliable estimations of microbiological, physicochemical, nutritive, and sensory characteristics. Each chapter discusses the processing effects of relevant technologies and includes the basics of microbial kinetics, sensory evaluation, and the perception of food quality. A sampling of the techniques covered: Processing Effects on Safety and Quality of Foods addresses the entire food processing industry, including food modeling, optimization, and proper design of manufacturing plants. It is the first of its kind―a single, sound reference that explores all of the different aspects involved in evaluating processing effects in food safety and quality. |
