Product Description
220 scattered color photographs, 87 maps, 6 line drawings, 3 tablesThe Baja California peninsula is home to many forms of life found nowhere else on earth. This, combined with the peninsula's rugged and inaccessible terrain, has made the area one of the last true biological frontiers of North America. L. Lee Grismer is not only the foremost authority on the amphibians and reptiles of Baja California, but also an outstanding photographer. He has produced the most comprehensive work on the herpetofauna of the peninsula and its islands ever published. With its stunning color images, detailed accounts of many little-known species, and descriptions of the region's diverse environment, this is the definitive guide to the amphibians and reptiles of a fascinating and remote region. The culmination of Grismer's quarter century of fieldwork on the Baja peninsula and his exploration of more than one hundred of its islands in the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortés, this book gives information on the identification, distribution, natural history, and taxonomy of each species of amphibian and reptile found there. Preliminary accounts of the life history of many of the salamanders, frogs, toads, turtles, lizards, and snakes are reported here for the first time, and several species that were almost unknown to science are illustrated in full color. The book also contains new data on species distribution and on the effect of the isolated landscape of the peninsula and its islands on the evolutionary process. Much of the information gathered here is presented in biogeographical overviews that consider the extremely varied environments of Baja California in both a contemporary and a historical framework. An original and important contribution to science, this book will generate further research for years to come as it becomes a benchmark reference for both professionals and amateurs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome blockbuster, will amaze you
When I bought this book, I was worried about whether I would be getting my money's worth, considering the high price, but as a herp enthusiast who likes to collect books about various regions that are rich in unusual herpetofauna, I decided, with some trepidation, to go for it. I must say that I was totally awestruck by the sheer size of the book, the thoroughness of the accounts, covering every known species, spectacular color photos, beautiful maps, and easy readability. All sorts of interesting tidbits are thrown in from local folklore. This book is a masterpiece in terms of its content, as well as being an absolutely beautiful coffee table book. A must-have for all herp enthusiasts!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best there is!
If you want to have a complete picture of Baja California's interesting herpetological communicty; this is a splendid book. Written by someone who has spend years in this area studying these animals and therefor knows what he is writing about with a lot of personal information. No one else could have written this standard piece of work for this area. Excellent photographs make this book a must have and makes me want to go bakc there every time I take it off the shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Book on Baja California Herpetology
First, let me say that I have known Lee Grismer for many years and I know the passion he has for the Baja Peninsula and its natural wonders. I have been waiting a long, long time for this book. When I received it, I scanned the book and planned to read it cover to cover when I had the time. In the last weeks, I made the time and have nearly finished this tome.
Dr. Grismer has put his heart and soul into making this book the best herpetological reference on Baja California, bar none. Baja is a mysterious place with many influences flowing into it from the Pacific, the Colorado Desert and mainland México. In this book, Dr. Grismer takes great pains to delineate the geological influences which have helped to shape this strange land and the effects on the herpetology of this 1,000 km long peninsula.
I marvel at the time he has put in studying the many organisms extant on the peninsula and his obviously meticulous note taking. I am in awe of the relationships he has built up with local ranchers and fishermen over the last quarter century. Local people are a great source of information and Lee has used their knowledge and consciousness to build a reference source the likes of which has never before been devoted to a similar chunk of land.
I would love to write more but I feel that the book will speak for itself. It is a great read and not nearly as tedious as other scientific works I have read. Just for its reference value, this book deserves to be on the shelf of any serious student of herpetology.
Now, all we need isField Guide!

5-0 out of 5 stars Grismer rules, as do Baja herps.
If you're in to herp's at all, you will love this book. I personally have a passion for Rosy Boas (Lichanura trivirgata), so having data and photo's of obscure locality specimens is very exciting for me. I also contacted Lee via email, and he was very diligent with replies and candid details about rosys. This book took 25 years of his life to put together, and it shows. The level of detail and representation of every specie and subspecies indigenous to the peninsula is awesome. The quality of the photographs and the portrait that each paint is outstanding. There are even photos of the variable habitats that occur on the peninsula too. I have never seen the natural habitat that my captive born Baja rosys come from, but this book has inspired me to do so. I highly recommend this book. It will make you want to discover Baja in person.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive field guide to Baja Herpofauna.
Excellent! Grismer not only has a lengthy description of each animal, he includes and section on the animal's status in the wild and local beliefs, which in all cases are veryinteresting. The style of of photograpy for title pages is very creative, with the animal in a bottom corner, and the Baja scenery in the background. (He does have macro photographs where the animal is centered for species documentaion.) I highly recommend it for it's wonderful photography and interesting text. ... Read more

Very informative book, covering an extensive range of animals. Descriptions have plenty of detail. Not just visual ID book, but a reference book on what makes them tick.

5-0 out of 5 stars The standard by which all others should be judged
This book is the yardstick that all other field guides should be measured against. Detailed and concise, Hammerson gives an excellent account of Colorado herpetofauna. I have two copies, one for my car and one for home.

5-0 out of 5 stars ANatural History Treasure!
For those only mildly interested in snakes, lizards, frogs and other 'creeping things', this book will change your life's direction forever! The first edition of this book was a treat: a field guide to the herpetofaunaof Colorado, complete with photos, descriptions and distribution maps. Iwas highly pleased with it, and looking forward to the release of thesecond edition (due out in 1998, I think). The wait was worth it! This newedition contains not only the photos, some breathtaking in their beauty andclarity, and distribution maps, etc, but also pretty much everything onewould ever desire to know about herpetofauna in the Southwest. This booknow contains chapters on biogeography, examining all the Colorado habitats, conservation status and legislation, human interactions, viewing methods, and each Colorado species has its own and very thorough entry. As aprofessional herpetologist, this book is invaluable to me wherever I happento be, Colorado or no. As a complete amateur, this book would open up amysterious world! It's too heavy for a field guide, that's why there'sthose terrible Audubon things (although Patterson is good), but terriblyuseful for when you get home again. Buy this book, now! ... Read more

Product Description
Some 360 million years ago the ancestors of today's reptiles and amphibians emerged from the sea to take on the challenge of land. This successful venture climaxed in a spectacular 140-million-year domination of the Earth by the dinosaurs. Today there are more than 11,000 species of reptiles and amphibians living in all parts of the world. Their behavior and physiology are as complex as those of birds and mammals, and they are equally well-adapted to the astonishingly varied environments they inhabit. Only through a greater understanding of the fragile balance that exists between the species and their habitats will it be possible for us to ensure their survival.
This Second Edition of Reptiles and Amphibians is a magnificently illustrated book, with highly comprehensive and authoritative text, written by the world's leading herpetologists. The book has more than 200 superb color photographs and 100 original paintings, maps, and diagrams. It is an up-to-date and definitive volume that chronicles the life-histories of some of nature's most secretive yet remarkable creatures.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fine reference
I am not trained in zoology and approach this subject as a complete amateur and a beginner amateur at that. This book is lavishly illustrated with expert and precise drawings as well as breathtaking photography that is more than adequat in conveying the beauty and complexity of the book's subject matter.

The "Key Facts" corner of every chapter gives useful basic information, e.g. the biggest and smallest of snakes, lizards or whatever - and how many are endangered. One cutaway view of a rattlesnake's rattle is particularly fascinating, though it only leaves me asking for more internal anatomical views.

While the writing is generally good, it sometimes lapses into a specialist's jargon that leaves us amateurs scratching our heads. Even when words like "lamellae" and "setae" are explained, might it just suffice to call them "overlapping plates" and "projections" respectively when discussing how geckos can "stroll on the ceiling"? I found myself looking back to check on what term meant what. Also, rather than a photograph, a drawing of the gecko foot might be more revealing - and there the scientific terms could be introduced.

But this is a minor complaint. I have no regrets whatsover about purchasing this book. it is a brilliant and spectacular tribute to the animal world's great wonders.

Product Description
Anyone interested in reptiles is interested in Australia. Reptiles of Australia is the most comprehensive and user-friendly guide available to every one of its crocodiles, turtles, monitor lizards, dragons, snakes, skinks, geckos, and other lizards. A vast expanse of land and coastline encompassing tropical, temperate, and arid environments, Australia is home to a rich and unique reptile fauna--nearly three times as many species as in North America. With the current count at 836 described species, and with many more unnamed, it is a fauna as diverse as any in the world. Compact and accessible, this guide features a full-color photograph of each species and authoritative text that describes key identification traits. Thumbnail outlines of each family group further enable easy identification.

Australia is a mosaic of habitats, each element of which is the favored environment for a distinctive reptile species: warm, shallow, turbid seas fringed with mangroves, clear coral reefs, freshwater wetlands, tropical rainforests and savannahs, arid stony plains and ranges, sandridge deserts, alpine areas, and cool southern forests and heaths. A square mile of desert covered with spinifex grasses may support more reptile species than an area of comparable size anywhere in the world.

Attractive, portable, and affordable, Reptiles of Australia is the ideal home or traveling companion for all reptile enthusiasts, whether pet owners, amateur herpetologists, or specialists of this spectacular aspect of natural history.

  • A portable, accessible, user-friendly guide to all the reptiles of Australia
  • 930 full color photos, at least one for each species
  • Text describes key identification traits
  • Thumbnail sketches of each family group enable easy identification

4-0 out of 5 stars Requisite Reading
These 3 volumes should be on every herpetoculturist's bookshelf. These are not treatises on the complete array of reptiles but in depth essays on particular topics applicable to any.

The downside - many typos, grammatical and 'flow' errors.
The upside - An incredible bibliography of references.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite complete!
This three-volume, behemoth of a bible on reptile care and medicine covers almost any topic you can think of or might encounter, either as a herpetoculturist, veterinary nurse or veterinarian.

Although some topics lack detail, this is understandable considering the sheer size of the books and the vast amount of subjects that are touched. Sometimes a little extra research will be needed if you want to know more, but for most purposes, this set is more than adequate.

The only deterrant is its price (and maybe its weight!), however it is well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Herpetological Sets Available
This is wonderfully edited 3 volume set which is one of the best and most complete series on reptiles available.Even when compared to veterinary texts, which often only focus in on one aspect of biology, the Ackerman, et. al stands heads and shoulders above them as a resource tool.Having purchased this set two years ago, I only have one regret and that is having not bought this sooner.Being an amateur herpetologists for the past twenty-two years, I find this to be a resource that is always helpful.

Volume One - Biology of Reptiles = This is a great overview of the biology and physiology of the world's reptiles. This volume focuses mainly on the more "popular" reptiles seen in captivity, but most of this data can be applied to other species as well. The anatomical charts and dissection photos are also very useful in knowing the locations of important structures (very helpful for Vol.3) and anatomical landmarks.

Volume Two - The Husbandry of Reptiles = WOW! This volume is worth the price of admission alone - I have not seen anything as thorough as this for the captive care of any reptile species let alone an entire phyla.Housing, diet, breeding, light spectrums (species specific), hibernation - its all in here and in detail.

Volume Three - The Healthcare of Reptiles = This is the volume that sold me on the entire set. This covers many ailments and pathogens that can affect reptile species.Symptoms, preventive measures, and medications (with dosages) are plotted out in charts and diagrams; color photos of pathological conditions and treatment are given; dietary supplements; surgical and necropsy protocols and procedures are also included.

All three volumes are filled with full color photographs and plenty of charts and text.I have seen this set quoted at many different prices and I suggest you shop around be it online or at a herp store...

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful reference
This text proves useful in understanding the physiological make-up of herps in volume 1.The volume on husbandry (vol.2) is weak if you are looking for species specific information or in-depth information regarding vivarium set up.The real strength of the work lies in the final volume on discussing thehealth care of reptiles. The Ackerman and Ackerman work does not eclipse Frye's _Reptile Care_ but it does give more recent clinical applications on the medical care of your herps than its predecessor.Overall, it is a wise investment for both hobbyists and professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any serious Herper
This set of three volumes are wonderfully illustrator and well written. Each book is geared to a different aspect of reptiles care. The first covers in great detail the biology of all reptiles species. They documentand show detailed photos of each species anatomy so that you willunderstand how a reptile functions. In the husbandry volume, they covereverything from proper housing to diet with examples and photos of what tolook for if something is incorrect and the reptile is ill.I was veryimpressed with the health care one.It was so well done that I felt my vetcould do a procedure detailed in it (that they might not have dealt withyet in their practice) with ease. This set is a must for anyone serious inthe study and raising of any reptile. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete field guide for vacationing naturalist
Includes multiple color photographs of certain species, and lacks any color photographs of ~1/3 of species described.Species lacking color photos are represented by black and white line drawings of head and in some cases the entire body.Would not recommend for a casual visitor to the region.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent field guide
This book is perfect for anyone interested in herps in the Maya Forest. Complementary to Campbell's field guide, but also includes great line drawings, range maps, and characteristics to distinguish from similar species. Also, better photos than in Campbell's guide. If I were to buy one field guide for the area, I'd choose this over Campbell's.

3-0 out of 5 stars never received my order
I would like to review this book but it never arrived.
Have sent multiple emails to source but no success.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bible for herpers
GREATEST book ever written for herpers. I call this my bible for reptile buying, keeping or just plain informational. So many uses and so quick for referencing a reptile before buying.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pass on this book
Although I wasn't expecting much from this book beyond some quick simple information on various species, I was still dissappointed. The care information is poor in many cases when I compared it to several other expert sources. Basic care info is missing like temperature and humidity requirements. My main reason to get this book was for the photos and species identification and in some cases that was incorrect. For example the what is supposed to be a photo of a Forest Hinge-back Tortoise looks more like a Home's Hinge-back Tortoise [...] I can't recommend this book to anyone looking to provide good quailty care to their pet. Or to help identify a species. Pass on this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great to Have if You Go to Reptile Shows
If you really like to go to reptile shows to get your pets, this book is really great to carry with you. It consists of numerous one page entries on individual species. It includes nearly all of the reptiles (including snakes) and amphibians that you would encounter in the pet trade. Although I wish it had more information on whether or not a certain animal was easy to handle or good for beginners/experts, etc, it's a good "shotgun" herp book to have since it details lots of different species not just a select few. So if you ever have wondered how long a long-tailed lizard gets when you are at your local herp show, you can easily look it up in this book.

I liked nearly everything about this book. The format of one species per page with a high quality color photo made it wonderful to use. This info is for all the popular animals kept in captivity. The content of information was great, with one exception.I wish the temperature ranges for species were given, but the author directs the reader to other book titleswith this and more detailed information. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars No Matter Your Politics, This Book Will Have You Belly Laughing
This book is a collection of tongue-in-cheek political essays and satires. No one does this quite as good as P. J. O'Rourke except for the late Molly Ivins.

"When I was nineteen, I embarked on the obligatory collegiate flirtation with Marxism and announced it loudly to everyone.Once, when I was home at Christmas, my grandmother took me aside."Pat", she said, "I've been worrying about you. You're not turning into a democrat, are you?"
"Grandma", I said. "Democrats and Republicans are both fascist pigs. LBJ is slaughtering helpless Vietcong and causing riots in America's inner cities and oppressing workers and ripping off the masses.I'm not a democrat!I'm a Maoist!"
"Just so long as you're not a democrat", said my grandmother". (p. x1v)

His essay, 'An Intellectual Experiment', is wonderful. He compares information gleaned from reading an issue of the New York Review of Books to an evening watching network television. It had me in stitches. His conclusions were:

"Whether smart is worse than stupid or vice versa is an important question.Smart means neo-expressionist paintings, which are awful. But stupid means music videos which are pretty awful, too.Ignorance is stupid, but education causes college students.Logic is smart, but Marxism is logical.Smart people don't start many fights. But stupid people don't build many hydrogen bombs. Then again, smart people would never drop one.Or would they?" (p.14-15)

I loved his essays on 'Hollywood Etiquette' and 'The Pick-up Truck".I devour his books. No matter what party line you succumb to, O'Rourke will have you belly laughing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sharp but Dated
P.J. O'Rourke is what a Republican used to be about--the party of Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt.Small government and small industry.Trusting people to take care of themselves without a hovering nanny looking after them. This book serves as a position piece for a party that has been hijacked by forces alien to its foundation. And it's pretty damned funny besides.

It's dated, though.Written a good twenty years ago, it addresses such issues as poverty in Marcos's Philippenes and a constitutional crisis in the Turks and Caicos islands. This isn't exactly front-page material any longer. We get an overview of O'Rourke's beliefs and the source of them, but one wonders what you'd get out of them today.

Sadly, the author isn't as eloquent anymore, nor is he as politically inclusive. He's lapsed into a sad neo-conservative agenda that seems almost antithetical to the contents of this book. But at least, between these covers, we still have the writings of a man who boldly said what he meant and meant what he said. And I'll bet he'll sell you on it too.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good collection of pieces
So far, I've had the pleasure of being an O'Rourke reader for this one and Parliament of Whores (more will no doubt follow). Republican Party Reptile isn't as good if you appreciate PJ for the way he does a detailed analysis which is still funny and controversial - as Parliament was a very organised, topical book. This one is a bit too much of a random knapsack for that.

That still makes it a great book as his pieces will drive home his views on drugs, politics, cars, drugs, international relations, teenaged girls, crime and fast cars. My favourites were Ship of Fools (a bunch of lefties and peaceniks cruise the Volga in the USSR during the Cold War, PJ is with them), Ferrari Refutes Decline of the West (PJ and boss get to deliver a Ferrari from NY to LA over several days of high speed cross country), Holiwood Etiquette (a great take on the neurosis etc) and How to Drive Fast on Drugs While Getting Your Wing-Wang Squeezed and Not Spill Your Drink (self explanatory I trust!)

So if you want to acquaint yourself with an earlier, more personal PJ, this book is good.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Set of Humorous Essays
P. J. O'Rourke is an incredibly funny writer and incisive commentator on the contemporart scene. This collection of essays, while from a libertarian point of view, should be found enjoyable by all readers. In this book he skewers the Safety Nazis, pro-Soviet visitors to the USSR, the New York Review of Books, horrible Protestant hats, cocaine pirates, and other odd ducks in flight.P.J. O'Rourke is one of the funniest writers around, and I also recommend his PARLIAMENT OF WHORES and GIVE WAR A CHANCE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good essays
Most of the essays in this book are as funny and informative as most of O'Rourke's other works, and unlike "American Spectator's Enemies List", the book is well worth the cover price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great overview ofreptiles and amphibians in Hawaii, but needs updating...
Sean McKeown has developed a nice collection of the history, biology, distribution, and behavior of 28 species of reptile and 5 amphibians found in or around Hawaii, many of which were introduced. It is missing the more recent invasion of the coqui frog (Eleutherodactylus coqui), which is actually affecting property values where it is found (it exists at very high densities, and its call is very loud).

In this book, A Field Guide To Reptiles And Amphibians In The Hawaiian Islands, McKeown speaks in a language of interest to both the general public and to specialists. The many photographs are of very high quality.

I've seen the green and black dart-poison frog in the upper reaches of Manoa Valley, and wondered about their history (introduced for mosquito control). The giant toad (Bufo marinus) I know mostly from eastern Australia, where it was introduced from Hawaii to control the sugar cane grub (in Australia, it is called the cane toad). In Hawaii, I don't hear many complaints about this toad.In Australia, it is a major catastrophe, as it affects the native animals that would normally feed upon the native toads (the cane toad is poisonous).

I appreciate McKeown's focus on the danger posed by brown tree snakes.Thankfully (in 2009), it still is not considered present in Hawaii, although a few individuals are captured every couple of years, usually brought in with shipments of freight from Guam.

And I always appreciate more insights into the life and times of Hawaii's sea turtles.

Recommended for the enthusiast of Hawaiian natural (including the unnatural) history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome creatures, great photos, solid information
This a fascinating, beautifully photographed, colorful field guide to some incredible creatures that crawl, climb, hop and swim in Hawaii. You'll learn what they look like, where they live, how they live, where they came from, how they reproduce, how to care for them in captivity, and interesting, fascinating facts about each of the species covered. The large color photographs are particularly striking. Includes glossary, bibliography, index and distribution maps. You'll find this book interesting whether or not you take it into the field, and even if you have only a mild interest in the subject. It's easy to get pulled in. Good job! ... Read more

Product Description

Building on the success of its popular predecessor, the second edition of Ecotoxicology of Amphibians and Reptiles presents newly available findings on the species that are important environmental indicators. This new edition covers nearly twice as many topics as the first, including recent developments in the ecotoxicology of amphibians and reptiles, the current status of these animals, and intrinsic factors that affect their susceptibility to contaminants. The book also provides the latest information on specific groups of contaminants and their effects and body burdens in herpetafauna. After a review of how contaminants interact with other ecological factors, the text explores concerns for the future.

New in the second edition:

  • New research on the effects of pesticides, heavy metals, endocrine disrupting chemicals, and UVB
  • Increased focus on the effects of contaminants rather than merely reporting residue information
  • A synthesis of information on atrazine and its effects on gonads at low concentrations
  • Coverage of the potentially alarming new cadre of chemicals that have recently or are about to come on the market for which there is very little or no information
  • Important advances in surveying and monitoring

One of the major factors behind the writing of the first edition was the worldwide phenomenon of declining amphibian populations. Although this decline has not abated, the breadth of research into its causes has expanded significantly. With chapter contributors carefully selected by the team of editors as leaders in their fields, this book provides an authoritative compendium of the most recent information on effects and residues coupled with a syntheses of what these numbers mean to science and policy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Texas Amphibians & Reptiles
Book arrived in excellent condition and ahead of time.Great service.Would highly recommend the seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate county specific guide to Texas reptiles and amphibians
Dixon's guide is far better than the Peterson, Texas Monthly and Audubon guides when it comes to narrowing down the species/subspecies of a specific county. With many reptiles and amphibians this information alone can decide a difficult identification. Also, the bibliography section has led me to many in-depth reports and studies. If you are only interested in looking at paintings or uncharacteristic photographs of these animals, I encourage you to consult the usual field guides. However, if you are a professional or an amateur willing to put this book to work, there is no other Texas resource like it.

My only complaint is that we could sure use a 2005 update. Also, Dixon's insightful comments under the species accounts (updated in the 2000 edition)would be even better if they were more extensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Ten-Foot Bibliography In a Handy Desk Reference
Dixon's book is an important research tool for professional and amateur herpetologists working with the amphibians and reptiles of Texas who need to 1) refer to a rich bibliography of about 3,500 references that is current as of April 1999 - more than half of which are new since the 1987 first edition, 2) have distribution maps for all the native Texas amphibians and reptiles based on more than 13,000 county records covering more than 110,000 localities, 3) keep current with taxonomic changes, 4) refer to identification keys, and/or 5) understand the problems facing the continued survival of these animals in the face of commercial collecting and habitat destruction.

The book is composed of four major sections - A) keys (40 pages covering salamanders, frogs and toads, amphibian larvae, turtles, lizards, and snakes), B) species accounts (115 pages), C) distribution maps (94 pages with 162 maps), and C) a bibliography (143 pages). There are also shorter sections covering an 86-term glossary, indices of common (about 425) and scientific (about 550) names, and a few (25) black and white photos.

While the book is not suitable, in my estimation, as a field guide; it is nonetheless an excellent, annotated, and comprehensive bibliographic reference for serious students of the full range of Texas amphibians and reptiles.Under each genus and species account, in addition to the comments and distribution maps, a sometimes lengthy list of bibliographic references from among the 3,500 cited in this book is shown for further look-up as desired. This is a very effective way of cross referencing, by species, a shelf of additional material that I grossly estimate to be perhaps ten feet or so wide.I suggest that the most effective use of this thorough and well-researched book is in conjunction with nicely illustrated and somewhat more self-contained guides to Texas herps such as Werler and Dixon's Texas Snakes, Conant's Field Guide to Reptiles & Amphibians of Eastern & Central North America (Peterson Field Guide Series), or Vermersch's Lizards and Turtles of South Central Texas - for any of which this book is a particularly excellent and useful companion.

As time goes on, the late-1990's content of Dixon's book will need to be updated again (the first edition of this work was released 13 years before the current edition) or it will cease to be as current and useful as it still is even today - some five years after its 2000 publication. On the other hand, even if not timely updated, this book will remain an excellent and vital snapshot in time of the literature and known distribution of the Texas herpetofauna.Anyone wishing to enhance or complete their knowledge of specific Texas herps should certainly refer to this book or consider adding this excellent, moderately priced book to their herp library depending upon how often they wish to refer to it.

As an afterword, it is interesting to note that most books - certainly those able to pass the rigors of marketing scrutiny that commercial publishers require today before a book is accepted for publication - don't need operating instructions; one just needs merely to read the book.Unfortunately, however, this book is different.Because of its rather unusual style and content, the appearance of the book is not "friendly", and at first blush it seems to contain a lot of arcane tabular data and mysterious code without adequate plain English text to "decode" it.Of course this is not the case. This tabular information and code is the meat of Dixon's book, being the wealth of the distribution data and the excellent, cross-referencedbibliographic references. One should try to visualize that with the use of this book there is a ten-foot long shelf of accompanying reference material stretched across a library table, and that this book is the codex that translates between that wealth of outstanding reference material and shorter, more user-friendly herp reference books. With this understanding, the true value of Dixon's book can be appreciated.

Just note that although the book has been in print for nearly four years as of the time of this writing, there has been only one short review of this book on Amazon.com, titled "Book Not For Amateurs", which states that "Unless you are a serious student of herpetology, do not buy this book.It does not contain photos or descriptions intended for the use of the general public, but tables and numbers that mean nothing to me. If you don't know what you are looking for, you are certainly not going to find it here. This was an expensive lesson for me to learn. I hope this prevents someone else from doing the same."

How sad to read that poor Amazon.com review: I can only hope it didn't discourage anyone who could have benefited from reading/usingDixon's fine book.Proof positive of the absolute need for this book review!
END
