Editorial Review Product Description The Handbook of Venoms and Toxins of Reptiles offers "one-stop shopping" to all biologists, biochemists, toxicologists, physicians, clinicians, and epidemiologists, and informed laypersons interested in the biology of venomous reptiles, the biochemistry and molecular biology of venoms, and the effects and treatment of human envenomation. This book examines the topic generally, provides an overview of the current taxonomy of these reptiles, explains the similarities and differences in the venom delivery apparatus in different groups of reptiles, reviews state-of-the-art knowledge about specific venom components and their action, and summarizes effects of envenomation and treatment in humans on different continents. Produced by leading toxinologists, biologists, biochemists, and physicians from 12 countries, the book provides a broad, international perspective that bridges divergent areas in modern biology. A synthesis of current knowledge about venoms and venomous reptiles, it contains a wealth of illustrations, including an 8-page color insert, that present a view of reptile toxinology from the whole animal to the glands producing venoms to the molecular models and the mechanisms of actions of the toxins themselves. The book provides a context for understanding the range of activities present in venoms and supplies detailed information on many enzymes and toxins found in them, bringing into focus the worldwide extent of the occurrence and complexity of human envenomations by reptiles. It explores the unique and interesting results produced by collaborations between specialists from very different fields and how they can stimulate new and continued interest in research on venoms and the animals that produce them. Editorial Review Product Description Customer Reviews (1)
The most comprehensive book on this subject in this field The book is divided into two parts. The first part, and by farthe most useful, is that on the osteology of all the known reptilia. Romerstarts off with a quick intro into the muscular, cardiovascular and nervoussystems of the reptilia along with how it affects the skeleton and thendives head first into the wide variety of osteology found in this amazinggroup. He divides the skeleton into various parts (e.g. skull, axial, limbgirdles etc.) and goes at it from there. To keep the book from becoming toohumongous, Romer focuses on representatives of each major order. What oneis left with is a well documented piece of work that makes a wonderfulreference book for those interested in reptiles and a must have for anybudding herpetologist, zoologist or vertebrate paleontologist. Thesecond part of the book is Romer's classification and systematic groupingof all the members of the reptilia. He continues to be very extensive as hebrings relationships all the way down to the family level. Still, regardless of how hard he worked on it and how detailed he was, thisportion of the book is painfullydated. This is the inevitable fate of allbooks taxonomical as nomenclature and relationships continue to changefaster than books can be published on them. Romer himself knew that thiswould be a problem and admits to it ahead of time in the foreword of thebook. And even though Dr. LaDuke attempts to point out areas where nameshave changed and families have moved (such as the redistribution of theCotylosauria into many separate groups along with the abandonment of suchorders as Eosuchia and Thecodontia) even his changes will one day beobsolete (if they're not already). So the second half, regarding therelationships of the reptilia, is more of a historical piece than anythingelse. There are some saving graces to this portion though. For instance, one can see the torture involved in trying to show evolutionaryrelationships using the standard Linnean taxonomic system. Another one isRomer's attention to detail. Now living in a time where creatures are showntheir evolutionary relationships to one another mostly through thesimplistic use of most recent common ancestor, it is nice to look back to atime when diagnostic features actually meant something. If one ever wantedto know what makes a python a python or a crocodile a crocodile, AlfredRomer's work will tell you that and then some. Finally the forward of thebook really gives one an idea of just how much attention the reptilia isgiven as Romer astutely points out when he states that "I am impressedby the fact that we know less about many modern types than we do of manyfossil groups." Nearly half a century later and this statementstill rings true. ... Read more |
