You can't go wrong with Cat in the Hat Series!
My son loves every book in the Cat in the Hat Learning Library--and Miles and Miles of Reptiles is certainly no exception. All of the books in the series have the familiar characters that we all know and love, with a writing style reminiscent of Dr. Seuss' contagious ramblings. They have a fun, ryming pattern that is enjoyable to read, even on the 99th repeat.I got this one for my son because he was learning about reptiles at school and was very interested in the subject.This book helped reinforce the details that he had already learned, and helped introduce new facts in a fun and humorous text.I highly recommend this book, along with the other Cat in the Hat titles, for any kid who likes to have fun while learning!!

Fun, entertaining, educational !
I read it to my 4.5 year old, its a fairy long book, but because the rhymes are fun and the vocabulary simple, my son stays engaged till the last page! Besides, he and I learn all the fun facts about reptiles... Lots of them! Herpetologist and Naturalist Must-Have
This book is the "Bible" of Herpetological field guides.It encompasses all of the herp taxa in beautiful, detailed drawings with excellent natural history to accompany each species.It is a bit outdated because there have been many taxonomic changes, but it is still the best available guide out there.If you want to go herping or just familiarize yourself with the amphibians and reptiles in your backyard, this is a must-have book.

The Reptile Room's Murderer

A Series of Unfortunate Events tells the story of three really smart children that become orphans and live a really miserable childhood.
In this volume called "The Reptile Room" they stay at Monty's beautiful house after outsmarting count Olaf, right before he swears vengeance.

The story takes place at lousy lane, a disgusting road that smelled like fertilizer and at Monty's house which looked old and creepy on the outside, butwas really cozy inside.
The special feature about Monty's house is this room called "the reptile room" that was filled with... reptiles. Reptiles of all kinds, from snakes to turtles and books all about them.
Monty is planing a trip to Peru, but his assistant quit right before it, so he has to hire someone else called Stephano to help him on the trip. As soon as the children see him, they realize that he is just count Olaf in a disguise. The next day Monty gets "bitten" by the Mamba Du Mal, one of the most venomous snakes in the world. Right away the children suspect that count Olaf is to blame for this when they seethat the Mamba Du Mal is still in its cage.
From now things go from bad to worse.
Olaf is taking the children to the airport where they are going to catch the flight to Peru, but fortunately they crash into Mr. Poe (the banker that in charge of the orphan's money) on their way.
Now the children must figure out a way to make Mr. Poe believe that "Stephano" is really count Olaf.
Because of the crash they all have to go back to the house. At first Mr. Poe does not believe the children because of Olaf's costume. By the end of the book he believes the children, but count Olaf is able to escape.

I personally liked this book and I would recommend it to anyone that can read a book that doesn't end with 'And they lived happily ever after.'

still dark, still fun
The Baudelaire orphans are sent this time to their uncle (cousin?) Monty, a herpetologist (a word which means "someone who studies snakes").

Reading A Series of Events is different this time, than the last (first) time I tried to read it. This time I know the children will always find a way to get out of their immediate predicament (which means "sticky situation"), and I also know Count Olaf will aways get away.

If you can't tell, I'm also enjoying the asides and digressions about words and their meanings.

Superb field guide
This excellent field guide identifies western NA herps down to species level, and rather than photos (which may be misleading), it has excellent generalized pictures, with lines pointing to locations of key diagnostic features.The species accounts in the back are quite useful, and the range maps comprehensive and detailed.Absolutely a critical resource for anyone who likes to catalog animals, or has interest in identifying species.

a must-have
This book is very handy, but very heavy. When i'm out in the field it is hard to carry since its bigger and weighs about 5 lbs but other than that it is a great book to have!

Reptiles and Amphibians of the Western USA
Another excellent Field Guide book! I have the first edition of this book and when one compares how the reptile and amphibian poplulation has changed in our country, it is amazing. If you purchase this book you must also buy the Field Guide to Eastern species.

I would like to see it to be able to review it.
I have never received these books.They were due on June 1-5, 07.It is now July 13th.I placed the order the first week in May.This is slo even for Mexico mail.However, I know the Peterson series and they are usually excellent.

I love this
I love this book because I have the National Audubon Society First Field Guide for reptiles and I would often run in to reptile that the I couldn't Identify. I knew that I needed a bigger better book. So I bought the western and eastern Peterson Field guide for reptiles and amphibians and it had a lot more reptiles and it had amphibians which I never had a book that had information about them before, it has a lot more reptiles and it's shows you were they are each located. It give you a detailed description of each animal and a detailed drawing of each animal. Because of this I have been able to identify reptiles and amphibian that I couldn't before. I don't like that they use drawing of the animals instead of pictures and the drawings just show the heads of the snakes. ... Read more

This won't be our last Eyewitness book!
This gift from my mother in law for my son sat unused on the shelf for about 2 years before he discovered it at the age of 6.Now suddenly it's the favorite "toy"; dragged to school, on short car trips across town and kept close during every spare moment at home.He knows instantly how to find his favorite spreads on the alligator snapping turtle and the crocodile skulls - invaluable for impressing his friends, teachers and complete strangers.This book inspired a very keen interest, to say the least!

Yes, the Eyewitness series is *technically* for an older reading level but they still makegood picture books for younger kids because the pictures are visually stimulatingand graphically laid-out on a plain white background (non-distracting). The information is also broken up into small groups of text next to specific photos or illustrations, arranged interestingly around the page.When a picture sparks his interest I can read about that item to my son and leave out other items until he's ready to explore further.In this way, our one-spread-per-night "story" time stays fun for his young mind without being overwhelming.

Just for example, the spread on Turtles and Tortoises starts with a technical definition in the main body, then the "tidbits" of info spread around the rest of the space give interesting anecdotes about their shells, common and uncommon species, turtle mythology, the largest turtle on record and Lonesome George, the last giant Galapagos island tortoise.Just enough educational material upon which to start research for a school paper, but not so much that it becomes discouraging.

What it all comes down to is, this book impressed me so much that I will be ordering several other of the Eyewitness series books as my kids grow, both for their enjoyment and as good reference materials for school.Excellent!

Goats with clothes
I was looking for a Goat breeder with some nice friendly goats. I also needed a goat dealer that was not afraid to dress his goats up in pretty cloths.

great field guide
This is a great field guide. I have found with field guides that it is always good to have more than one because they all miss some information, but this is definitely a great one to have.

Reptile handbook very useful
This is the 4th Audobon guide we've bought.The photographs are definitive, the written material is exhaustive, the information is invaluable, as we live in the country and come across snakes all the time -- and we don't want to kill anything that won't kill us, so we needed a manual. I recommend this book (and the series).Includes turtles, lizards, frogs, etc.

Why Do You Need a Field Guide?
Because the pictures in this book are as close as you're likely to get to seeing most of the amphibians and many of the reptiles described herein. The Painted Ensatina? The California Tiger Salamander? The Pacific Giant Salamander? The Yosemite Toad? Even the once-ubiquitous Pacific Treefrog? Gilbert's Skink? The California Legless Lizard? The Coast Horned Lizard? These are species I used to expect to see in California, where I've done a large share of my hiking over my 67 years. Thirty years ago, I could have taken you out to find any of them, with a near certainty of success. Now, looking for any herptile except the blue-bellied fence lizard is like fishing in a swimming pool.

Habitat destruction and pollution, especially from pesticides, would be enough to explain the precipitous decline in population of most herptile species, but anyone who studies these creatures, who knows their historical ranges, will tell you point-blank that climate change is hastening their decimation. Want to talk to an expert? Contact Tree Frog Treks in San Francisco, and speak to Chris! If you're an ideological denier of "global warming", you'll get an earful.

I like these little critters. Over the years, it's given me a lot of pleasure to spot them in nature, to know their names and their family connections, to understand a bit about their habits. Frankly, I'd rather see all the SUVs of America compacted into rust, and all the 42-inch TV screens go black, than see even a single sub-species of garter snake go extinct.

Important book
I really appreciate this author for his deep knowledge of human interactions, and capacity to frame things in a way that the reader can relate to.While the book uses humor (occasionally corny), the real meat of it is the way that it asks the reader to put thoughfullness over instinct. "Reptiles" finds a way to keep couples "in the game."I heard the author give a talk a few months after the book was published; he is a really smart guy and made a lot of sense. Worth reading!

Not yucky enough!
This book was awesome! It wasn't really yucky, unless you're a total baby about lizards and such.

It had a lot of animals we'd never heard of before and some of our old favorites. We learned such interesting, and yucky, things - like blood spurting out of the eye of a horned lizard to scare a predator away. Yeah, I'd run too. It has really great illustrations and a bit of humor mixed throughout.

My boys looked through it a lot and we read it many times before sending it back to the library. And I think we'll be getting it again soon. They've been asking about it.Fast forward a year - we bought it!

Nice intro to reptiles for toddlers
Beautiful illustrations. The text is very simple so it is appropriate for toddlers and young preschoolers. There is a bit more info on some of the reptiles at the back of the book. It is nice as part of the series when explaining different families of animals to toddlers.

A few flaws
A very good introductory book, but it should include all subbspecies.There is also room in the coverage of the anole to discuss the "roach" on the back of the neck of breeding males.There needs to be a photo of this, because if you encounter one, you might think it is a different species, as I did this summer (thank goodness for the internet!).One small criticism is the description of the box turtle as having a brown carapace.This should read "brown to jet black".There is definitely a good percentage of Caroilna's box turtles that have BLACK shells !

A FABULOUS book in a FABULOUS series
I adore this FABULOUSseries of very informative books on Florida's natural world and Florida's Fabulous Reptiles and Amphibians is one of my favorites.I hope to collect them all eventually but for the time being I am immensely enjoying my Reptiles, Butterflies, Insects, Land Birds and Waterbirds.

Florida's Fabulous Reptiles and Amphibians is listed on Amazon's product page as a children's book but adults should not be put off by that description because these books are for adults and older children alike.

I love Florida's Fabulous Reptiles and Amphibians for the lizards alone!I'm very fond of these wonderful creatures that grace my property in such great numbers and varieties, especially the Anoles.I'm so glad for the extensive education about them that this book provides me as well as for the hours of entertainment.

These books are absolutely beautiful!The pages are high quality glossy and while the books themselves are too large to be practical as field guides, they do provide everything, and I do mean everything, one could possibly wish to know about each subject.Every page is loaded with stunning full color photographs as well as many interesting side notes and curious tidbits of information.One can spend many hours exploring the contents of these truly fabulous books.

Surprisingly informative, and "fabulous" photos
My kids and I went on a kick of reading reptile books at a difficulty level similar to this one.After a week of going through various titles, I was surprised to learn more about alligators from the short section in this book than I had learned from all the previous stuff we had read together!Ditto for cottonmouths, and other reptiles.

The photographs are superb, and there are enough pictures of each species to give a true feel for what it looks like instead of a single profile view of each.

the perfect resource for your children
we LIVE in central florida and my nature loving kids are constantly bringing home wildlife. the vivid accurate photos in this book allow them to ID their living treasures with confidence. The best reptile text out there
Mader's volume is undoubtably the best reptile text available for vets with an interest in this area. I am currently a final year vet student, and every vet I know who works with reptiles in some way owns this text. I have found it invaluable. I would have liked a little bit more on Australian species, but you get what you can.

Worth every peso/centavo/colon/dollar to me
I am very pleased with this book which I purchased for an upcoming trip to CR.Granted it is too large to bring with on the plane I have ample time to study ahead and integrate the major concepts into the maps and plans I am making.There is far more information albeit well presented and documented than I as a hobbyist can use, better that than the opposite.The maps and layout have increased my understanding of the various zones within CR.The photos are good.I am fully satisfied with Savage's opus.

Almost an encyclopedia
A large, heavy book, even in paperback.Good illustrations (mostly photos), a large quantity of information, not only on the reptiles and amphibians, but on Costa Rica itself, even to including a short political history.Great value for the price!

Incredible book with very good pictures. It contains identification and biological informations about all the species of Costa Rica.

It's breadth of knowledge and splendorous photos will greatly increase your travel pleasure, because you really CAN see these animals just casually criss-crossing the country; you don't have to go to a special preserve.

In fact,another book I brought with me to Costa Rica last year, "Costa Rica : The Last Country the Gods Made," had a photo of a giant iguana that was taken literally 5 steps off the sand at the ultra-popular Manuel Antonio beach!

Great book, handy size ! Which means you can actually take this book with you and use it to identify all those Australian herps.

The photos are of a very good quality. Paper quality is great, text is short but to the spot and the distribution maps are of good quality as well.

Good Book!
This book was perfect for me. I recently discovered issues with parasites in my reptiles. After purchasing this book my understanding of parasites and the treatment of these creatures grew incredibly. The recommended drugs table is one of the best features inside. Not only will this book help you identify parasites in but it list primary and even some secondary medications to use. Explanations of how these medications work and their dosages are given as well. This is a good book for anyone wanting to learn more about treating parasites in reptiles. The only thing that is missing is the life cycles of the parasites mentioned. However some parasite life cycles aren't completely understood be science.

great reptile resource book
My son and daughter had a reptile guy (snakes, lizards, turtles, etc) for their birthday party.I got these for party favors.I figured they would be better than stuffed animals or plastic reptiles (which I put into a pinata instead).The book is great in that it gives lots of little facts (along w/stickers you have to use to match up w/the facts) for many different reptiles.The parents appreciated that it was an educational favor rather than toys.Good purchase!

Love it!!!
I just love turtles and bought the book because it sounded interesting. Timothy certainly makes you look at the world a different way. This is one you will re-read time and time again. A real keeper.

unique, thoughtful and worth the time

I just started reading the book .
I think so far it's ok , a bit confusing ,but
I like animal stories.

From difficult start to fan
I have enjoyed other writings of Klinkenborg - appreciated their direct style with carefully chosen words and well-formed thoughts.As I began Timothy; or, Notes of an Abject Reptile a found the short and often fragmentary sentences slowed my reading.As I progressed I was further slowed by unfamiliar vocabulary - huckaback, shambles, scute, taw ...Then I discovered the glossary in the back which provides a definition when context is insufficient.

As I delved further into the book my complaints turned to admiration.Klingborg's fragmentary sentence structure fits perfectly into the very concrete thought patterns he attributes to Timothy the tortoise.While Timothy may be philosophical at times it is a philosophy of life firmly planted in the natural world not the abstract philosophy of humans.The vocabulary is necessary to embed the story in a particular place and time - a critical aspect of Timothy's world.

Wisely, Klinkenborg does not carry the conceit of narration by a tortoise to the extreme.Timothy reports and/or comments on more that she would have actually been in a position to observe - most notably the travels of her owner's nephew, Gilbert White's observations re: sex and instinct in the "natural kingdom" (which, naturally, excludes humanity).But in these observations, Timothy quietly exposes the foibles of man.

Combining these elements, Klinkenborg creates a story that not only holds your attention but also requires introspection of the reader - what is the reader's (and Timothy's) place in the world? ... Read more
