5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent professional reference and teching guide
I regularly teach university courses on remote sensing and supervise students who use remote sensing as a basis for their papers and theses. I find this text an excellent, clear and rich resource. This is a book for people who not only want to learn and understand what remote sensing is, but to actually do serious studies with this type of data. In contrast with other more widely known textbooks such as Lillesand and Kiefer, Schowengerdt goes deep into important technical issues, without excessive verbose. A good investment for the serious student and professional.

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid text on image processing from a remote sensing perspective
Almost as good as Gonzaez and Woods on explaining digital image processing, this book has the added advantage of showing the relationship between that field and remote sensing. In other words, it shows you how to use the transforms to accomplish goals in the field of remote sensing. Also, it has some really good exercises at the end of each chapter so you can really prove to yourself that you understand what is going on.

I give this book four stars instead of five because there is no real advantage to buying this new book over the previous second edition, although that book is about ten years old. This edition does discuss the more modern sensors, but the calculations and models have not changed. There is no real additional content. In fact this edition and the previous one are almost identical in length. My advice is save yourself some money and get the second edition for less. If you are using it as a professional reference it should serve you well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough yet comprehensible introduction to remote sensing
David Wilkie and John Finn present the methods and tecnology of remote sensing in a clear, readable form that lives up to its subtitle "Aguide for first-time users".Both authors come to this technologyfrom a background in resource management which provides them good insightinto the specialized needs of biologists and planners. The discussionfocuses on distinguishing vegetation types (and in some cases individualanimals) rather than rocks and minerals, as in several other well-knowntexts.Discussions of sensor technology merge seamlessly with practicalissues such as the statistical basis of sampling designs and the relativemerits of aerial videography.Throughout, an effort has been made tocompare all of the many platforms, services, and sensor types instraightforward tables showing their strengths and weaknesses. In short, the authors present the technology as a useful tool for people interestedin environmental issues, rather than as a high-tech novelty of interest toelectronic engineers.I have recommended the book to all of my graduatestudents. ... Product Description

Human beings have certainly demonstrated their capacity to make long-term impacts on how natural systems work, but these impacts don’t have to be negative. However, to make better decisions, better information is required, and better understanding of the tools used to acquire and interpret that information is also crucial. An extensive review of remote sensing principles with emphasis on environmental applications, Fundamentals of Satellite Remote Sensing discusses a wide range of topics, from physical principles to data acquisition systems and on to visual and digital interpretation techniques.

This textbook focuses on the interpretation and analysis of remote sensing images and how they improve our understanding of environmental processes and their interaction with human activities. The authors discuss new interpretation approaches, including hyperspectral analysis, high-spatial resolution data, and radiative transfer models. The presentation includes an analysis of accuracy assessment methods and demonstrates how to integrate remote sensing results with geographic information systems. It also covers recent missions, such as Terra-Aqua, Envisat, Ikonos-Quickbird-Geoeye and SPOT-5, as well as new sensors, such as lidar and interpherometric radar. The discussion of visual criteria to extract interpretation from satellite images emphasizes differences and similarities with conventional photo-interpretation techniques. A chapter on accuracy assessment and the connection between remote sensing and geographic information systems helps readers extend the interpretation of satellite images to a more operational, applications-oriented framework.

Product Description

Glaciers and ice sheets have been melting significantly during recent decades, posing environmental threats at local, regional and global scales. Changes in glaciers are one of the clearest indicators of alterations in regional climate, since they are governed by changes in accumulation (from snowfall) and ablation (by melting of ice). Glacier changes have been measured for the last century by traditional field measurements, resulting in long time series for a few glaciers. Remote sensing data and methods, and geographic information systems, provide the means to allow glacier changes to be monitored at a global scale, to be analysed rapidly and to store the results and present information to both scientific and popular audiences in a way which was not possible before the digital revolution. Remote sensing of glaciers began with terrestrial and aerial photography during the middle of the 20th century, but today the discipline embraces a large variety of data types from laser scanner data to very high resolution satellite imagery, which can be applied to the mapping of glacier changes in terms of area, surface zonation or thickness. This book highlights the history of the remote sensing of glaciers, the physics of glaciers and remote sensing of them, and focuses particularly on modern data and methods used by remote sensing specialists and glaciologists. The book presents examples of glacier research carried out, for example in the Alps, Norway, Iceland, Caucasus, Patagonia, Rocky Mountains, Pakistan, Antarctica, New Zealand, and Svalbard.
This book is of interest to specialists and students working in the field of remote sensing, glaciology, physical geography, geology and climate change.

2-0 out of 5 stars Oh, really?
Sure appears to be a pile 'o crap to me. But I like sci-fi and the X-Files, so the book has some entertainment value, anyway. But really...remote viewing in the new century? Don't make me laugh. I suppose aliens teach eligible viewers how to do it...

4-0 out of 5 stars Scientifically factual. Not at all a huge pile of crap.
This book, which is filled to the brim with scientific facts and theory, helped me a great deal. I can now hang out and stare in the Victoria's Secret dressing rooms without leaving my stuffy, grime-encrusted apartment. I can also see through Bill Gates' eyes and have stolen all the code to Longhorn and sold it to Steve Jobs for $600. So this fine scientific tome made me a profit! Money well spent. Thanks,Mr. Rifat!

P.S....I would have rated this book 5 stars, but the fact that it's utter b.s. that only an acid casualty would believe drops it a full star. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Unclear Explanations, not for first timers
Using this book for a RADARS course, me and my friends find that this book is really unclear and poorly written. The author likes to twist words around blurring the explanations. The author does presents ideas in a more colloquial style which makes it easier to read, however I find it unhelpful in anyways to understanding concepts. The author should really learn from Jackson (Classical EM) in ways to present concepts precisely. Another problem: The author refers readers to Vol 1 of this series of books, which does not help because at ~ $$$ perbook, students won't be spending the extra $ to get his Vol 1.

I think this book would serve well as a reference for those who have background in RADARS. If you are starting off learning RADARS, this book is not a good idea. Sidenote: Fortunately our professor does a good job complementing this book by adding more explanations and examples.
