Product Description

This popular book introduces the fundamentals of remote sensing from an earth resource (versus engineering) perspective. The author emphasizes the use of remote sensing data for useful spatial biophysical or socio-economic information that can be used to make decisions. Provides two new chapters on LIDAR Remote Sensing (Ch. 10) and In situ Spectral Reflectance Measurement (Ch. 15). Offers a thorough review of the nature of electromagnetic radiation, examining how the reflected or emitted energy in the visible, near-infrared, middle-infrared, thermal infrared, and microwave portions of the spectrum can be collected by a variety of sensor systems and analyzed. Employs a visually stimulating, clear format: a large (8.5” x 11”) format with 48 pages in full color facilitates image interpretation; hundreds of specially designed illustrationscommunicate principles in an easily understood manner. A useful reference for agriculture, wetland, and/or forestry professionals, along with geographers, urban planners, and transportation engineers.

4-0 out of 5 stars good deal
this was a good deal on the book but slow delivery.it was delivered at the last day of the expected delivery window

4-0 out of 5 stars Remote sensing from an environmentalists perspective
Purchased this book for a graduate course in GIS. It was a good choice for the course objectives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
It was exactly what I wanted!! But it took a little longer to get to me than I expected. But otherwise the book was great!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Cutting edge, but needs work
This text book is extraordinarily detailed, and provides not only the concepts, but the theory and nuance for beginning in remote sensing. While studying this book, in detail, I have run into the following complaints, though:

1) The glossary and index are so incomplete, they're desolate.Important and conceptual terms that are used are not in either - it makes using the book quite difficult.

2) There is WAY too much minutia - the text is very informative, but I've found that the explanations of most things are excessively verbose.

3) Remote sensing is a very visual field.... and this book doesn't utilize diagrams and images nearly as much as it could/should.I realize that generating diagrams is time-consuming, but it would help this book immensely.

4) Chapter summaries and concept-based questions at the end of the chapters would probably help students a lot, too (perhaps even teachers).

5) There's not nearly enough talk about which EM bands see what, and what they help with. That's the entire basis of remote sensing, and it isn't explored in the detail that it could be.

So, while I recommend this text, because it is one-of-a-kind, I do so with the warning that it is obviously not a fine-tuned text yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Penn State Geog 497g requirement
I purchased this book while enrolled in Penn State's Geospatial Intelligencecertificate program. I have enjoyed the contents and the book does a great job of covering a wide variety of Remote Sensing principles without getting too bogged down in the technical jargon. I would highly recommend reading this for a great overall perspective on Remote Sensing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent deal
I am pleased with the condition of this used book.It was a great deal and it was delivered promptly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great technical overview with enough gory details to stay interesting
I am reading this book for an introductory course in Remote Sensing.I thoroughly enjoy the level of detail and the presentation of quantitative methods for analyzing data. The text can be somewhat dry (and dense) at times and difficult to digest, but for the most part, it manages to stay interesting. There are a lot of illustrations (including a whole section of color plates) that the student can reference. Also, the scope of the book is broad enough to be suitable for an introductory course, but still manages to stay focused (only 8 chapters!).

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best
I've seen other books give better explanations of remote sensing, and the amount of visuals in the book could be improved. They made concepts moredifficult to understand they they had to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutly One of the BEST!!
This book is one of the best on the market on Image Interpretation. After taking a class and the instructor had a different book (which was poorly written book) I bought this book. I found it interesting and easy to use, any math was explained step by step! I cant wait to get the 5th edition! This is a must for any person who is interested in this topic or is working in the field.

Product Description
The work of conservation biology has grown from local studies of single species into a discipline concerned with mapping and managing biodiversity on a global scale. Remote sensing, using satellite and aerial imaging to measure and map the environment, increasingly provides a vital tool for effective collection of the information needed to research and set policy for conservation priorities. The perceived complexities of remotely sensed data and analyses have tended to discourage scientists and managers from using this valuable resource. This text focuses on making remote sensing tools accessible to a larger audience of non-specialists, highlighting strengths and limitations while emphasizing the ways that remotely sensed data can be captured and used, especially for evaluating human impacts on ecological systems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book to connect GIS to Remote Sensing
Although a bit techn ical I was able to master this program with dedication and reading the book thorough to the end. Don't expect light reading, but also buy GIS for dummies to help through some of the Cuputobabel you should be familiar with.

5-0 out of 5 stars service that has become a standard for amazon
I chose super saver free shipping and received this item before the timeframe that the item was expected to arrive. The item was used but in the condition stated when purchased. Once again I am pleased with amazons service!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good definitions but Very technical
I would like to start by stating that I am a graduate student with some background in GIS enrolled in an introductory level Remote Sensing Course. This book goes into great detail on the topic of remote sensing. For an introductory level book, it is very technical and takes a lot of extra effort to retain all of the information that it has to offer. Its's good to take breaks while reading this book because you will find yourself re-reading things several times before you actually "get it." The definitions at the end of each chapter are a great feature. While the book is very technical, individual chapters often don't give you enough related information to answer their review questions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to Remote Sensing

are rather comprehensive and versatile. They could be grouped in different ways to suite for different purposes of the courses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great update to a classic

5-0 out of 5 stars very gooooooodddd!!!!!
Thank you for this wonderful book. It is great and I can make a use out of it in my remote sensing class. Good job!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars I wonder?
There is a reference to my GT-INDEX in 2nd edition, at chap. 13/Accuracy assessment. However, my GT-Index is not a so-called chance corrected accuracy index. It is the first and only index for measuring the identifying power of classifier. GT-Index is an estimate of the CONDITIONAL PROBABILITY of CORRECT CLASSIFICATION for a given Ground Truth category by RS classifier.

I critized the use of so-called "chance corrected accuracy indices" such as Kappa, Tau etc. by 2 letters to editors in 2002 (PE&RS, Feb. 2002 and RSE, Sep. 2002).

I did not have a chance to see it the 3rd yet. I wonder how this
issues and my GT-INDEX are handled in this edition.

If these issues are not considered I will give only 3 stars, but a correct discussion of them will surely make 5 stars. So, my staring is tentative.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Remote Sensing
Measures' book is THE definitive resource and THE best book ever written on laser remote sensing. Great figures, well written, and a VERY readable text.

A MUST HAVE for anybody doing research in the field of Remote Sensors, LIDAR, LADAR, DIAL, Atmospheric and Hydrographic Laser Radar etc.

NOTE: Original 1984 Edition and 1992 Reprint Edition are IDENTICAL.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lidar fundamentals
If you need a comprehensive introduction to Lidar technology, then Raymond Measures' Laser Remote Sensing: Fundamentals and Applications is really your only choice. The book is well written and nicely organized.

The science of light scattering (elastic, Raman, and fluorescence, chapters 2-4) is presented clearly, with appropriately detailed derivations.Elsewhere the level of detail and significance is uneven.I'd like to see a uniform presentation of Lidar engineering principles rather than a spotty coverage with detailed derivations. Two essential topics receive little or no coverage: eye safety restrictions and methods for high-speed detection.

Even with its 1992 update, the book is growing a bit long in the tooth. For instance, Measures notes the future importance of infrared Lidar, but does not teach any of the necessary technology.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book for lidar study
clearly addressed, even published in 1984, it beats all other similar books in laser remote sensing filed today. For people have studied quantum mechanics and spectroscopy class, this book will give a much clearer sense. Journal papers only talk about results, reader could use formula given by this book to verify some results in journal papers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for students of Laser remote sensing
During my association with people in the field of Laser remote sensing , I have still to meet a person who doesn't swear by this book. Clear, elaborate and accurate is howI would describe it. Its only unfortunatethat this book is not readily available. Its definitely on as a reference inmost papers and a good starting point for students beginning out in thefield of Laser remote sensing. All in all a 'must have' and a 'must read'for any one interested in Laser remote sensing. ... Product Description
Remote Sensing deals with the fundamental ideas underlying the rapidly growing field of remote sensing. John Schott explores energy-matter interaction, radiation propagation, data dissemination, and described the tools and procedures required to extract information from remotely sensed data using the image chain approach. Organizations and individuals often focus on one aspect of the remote sensing process before considering it as a whole, thus investigating unjustified effort, time, and expense to get minimal improvement. Unlike other books on the subject, Remote Sensing treats the process as a continuous flow. Schott examines the limitations obstructing the flow of information to the user, employing numerous applications of remote sensing to earth observation disciplines. For this second edition, in addition to a thorough update, there are major changes and additions, such as a much more complete treatment of spectroscopic imaging, which has matured dramatically in the last ten years, and a more rigorous treatment of image processing with an emphasis on spectral image processing algorithms. Remote Sensing is an ideal first text in remote sensing for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in the physical or engineering sciences, and will also serve as a valuable reference for practitioners. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for engineers interested in this field
The other books on the subject of remote sensing mainly look like they were written by and for geologists. There is usually lots of tabular data, tons of prose on the subject, and very little in the way of mathematics or algorithms. This just won't do if you are a programmer or engineer who needs to know how the final product got to be the final product, from optics to sensors to image processing. Engineers understand via equations and figures, and this book delivers those details.

Granted, the author does and must skip quite a few details when he is deriving equations such as the governing equation on the light that hits a sensor that appears to be coming from a target point. However, if the author was to go into those details the book would be 6000 pages long, not 600 pages. The part on image processing is OK, but still weaker than Gonzales and Woods book Digital Image Processing (3rd Edition). That book is essential if you want to manipulate the final product. Once again though, Schott had to delete some of the details in order to keep the book on track and on topic and prevent it from becoming an unwieldy tome. Highly recommended for engineers interested in remote sensing from an engineering standpoint.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book...but not great
Most hard-core remote sensing engineers would love this book, especially those interested in the overall design and physics of sensors themselves. I don't reference it as much as other texts I own on the subject, although I do reluctantly consider it a "must have" for remote sensing students who are interested in pursuing the field further. The price tag was not student-friendly, however. ... Read more

Product Description
The science and engineering of remote sensing--theory and applications

The Second Edition of this authoritative book offers readers the essential science and engineering foundation needed to understand remote sensing and apply it in real-world situations. Thoroughly updated to reflect the tremendous technological leaps made since the publication of the first edition, this book covers the gamut of knowledge and skills needed to work in this dynamic field, including:
* Physics involved in wave-matter interaction, the building blocks for interpreting data
* Techniques used to collect data
* Remote sensing applications

The authors have carefully structured and organized the book to introduce readers to the basics, and then move on to more advanced applications. Following an introduction, Chapter 2 sets forth the basic properties of electromagnetic waves and their interactions with matter. Chapters 3 through 7 cover the use of remote sensing in solid surface studies, including oceans. Each chapter covers one major part of the electromagnetic spectrum (e.g., visible/near infrared, thermal infrared, passive microwave, and active microwave).

Chapters 8 through 12 then cover remote sensing in the study of atmospheres and ionospheres. Each chapter first presents the basic interaction mechanism, followed by techniques to acquire, measure, and study the information, or waves, emanating from the medium under investigation. In most cases, a specific advanced sensor is used for illustration.

The book is generously illustrated with fifty percent new figures. Numerous illustrations are reproduced in a separate section of color plates. Examples of data acquired from spaceborne sensors are included throughout. Finally, a set of exercises is provided.

This book is based on an upper-level undergraduate and first-year graduate course taught by the authors at the California Institute of Technology. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of the field and its applications, it is appropriate for students in electrical engineering, applied physics, geology, planetary science, astronomy, and aeronautics. It is also recommended for any engineer or scientist interested in working in this exciting field. ... Read more

I bought this book and it took almost 3 weeks to receive even after I paid expedited fee.It should of arrived within a week as everything sent expedited comes up in Alaska by air. The book was for a class I'm taking at UAA.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible quality & poorly written
This was a required book for my college class. The quality of the book is horrible - pages come out randomly, and the print quality is terrible - it looks like a poorly copied B&W version of a color book. The captions in the photos talk about the colors in the photo, but guess what? There is NO COLOR!Unbelievable that a book in remote sensing, which relies on color coding for interpretation, would be printed in b&w!And unbelievable based on the price.

The organization and writing in the book is very hard to follow - extremely technical with very little practical explanation.(Of course, it might be easier to follow if you could actually see the detail in the photos!)Combine that with a professor that hates to explain, and you have a very difficult remote sensing class!

2-0 out of 5 stars poor photos
The book itself is good but when compared to the hardcover edition the poor quality of the photos is evident. Since I do not need to use these photos for my class it is not a major issue, but if you will be working directly from the book you might want to consider purchasing the hardcover.

3-0 out of 5 stars This was a required book for a college class!
This book has all the detailed information that you would expect a college school book to have. But nothing more! It's completely black and white, NO COLOR PAGES! This is 2006 lets get with the program here folks. Also, it was copyrighted in 1992, so to truly be current it needs an update badly. But once again it does have all the basic information that you would need too learn about remote sensing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book....lousy spine
The content of this book is fantastic, though perhaps a little dated now. A word of warning, though: the book will begin to disintegrate after opening it up about 50 times. Whatever glue was used to seal the spine was low-grade. Once the contiguous, 10-page chunks of the book begin detaching themselves from the center, it's a big mess. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Physical Principles Of Remote Sensing
I found this book to be an excellent supplement to a general remote sensing course. It doesn't go incredibly far into details on any one topic of remote sensing, but provides a broad exposure to the fundamental theories and equations pertaining to important remote sensing topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensible and helpful
I used this book during my studies, but also now I use it often to check some things. The book is written generally - it does not go too deeply into detail - but is still a good reference for a lot of questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid, well balanced and quite readable text for RS study
I was fortunate enough to attend Gareth Rees' course, for which this book was initially written. As a student that always needed to get things through the brain more than once for it to stick, I can thoroughly recommend this book. It is well written, handles the mathematical treatments with enough detail to be easy to follow (but it does assume a fairly strong undergraduate mathematical background). Excellent description of Synthetic Aperture Radar techniques and written in a style that makes it quite fresh for what is fundamentally a course text book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Remote Sensing
This is a must read for anyone interested (and serious) in remote sensing and digital image analysis. This is not as an introductory book as it claims to be so be aware of that, and some chapters requires a good understanding of math (algebra). If you are advanced in RS then get this book as reference, you won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The techniques of image processing in remote sensing
This book does not introduce you to image analysis and image processing itself. For that topic, in depth see Digital Image Processing (3rd Edition) for a general text on the subject that is very accessible.

This book looks at problems specific to remotely sensed images and their understanding and shows concrete techniques for solving the problems. It's not just a recipe book as there is a good bit of explanation shown too, but it is not a mathematician's book either. It is a practitioner's book. For example, it deals with statistical methods to deal with striping - the problem that sensors used to collect image data do not have the same response. That is not a topic you'd see in Gonzalez and Woods, but you might see the technique mentioned - histogram matching - and now at last you have a use for it.

The following is the table of contents since it is not listed in the product description:
1. Sources and characteristics of remote sensing image data.
2. Error Correction and Registration of image data.
3. The Interpretation of image data.
4. Radiometric enhancement techniques
5. Geometric enhancement using image domain techniques
6. Multispectral transformations of image data
7. Fourier transformation of image data
8. Supervised classification techniques
9. Clustering and unsupervised classification
10. Feature reduction
11. Image classification methodologies
12. Multisource and multisensor methods
13. Interpretation of hyperspectral image data
A. Missions and sensors
B. Altitudes and periods
C. Binary representation of decimal numbers
D. Essential results from vector and matrix algebra
E. Some fundamental material from probability and statistics
F. Penalty function derivative of the maximum likelihood rule

This is not a book on using the computer to solve complex problems, thus there is no programming involved. You need a well-rounded background in image processing, statistics, matrix algebra, and geometric transformations of images in order to get the most from this book. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books in remote sensing
The book by John Richards and Xiuping Jia is one of the best introductory books in the field of remote sensing. This work may be used as a textbook in a one semester course. This book is well organized, technically correct, with a reasonable level of mathematics for those new in the field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Springboard
This book is incredibly readable even for someone just getting started in GIS managing. Visual stunning pictures and enlightening figures dot every single page. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the science and practice of GIS management.

5-0 out of 5 stars The uses and applications of GIS
Remote sensing technology is changing not just government pursuits, but our daily lives - and REMOTE SENSING FOR GIS MANAGERS surveys the uses and applications of GIS using color images and illustrations to explore such diverse fields as agriculture, business, urban planning and more. Little prior information is assumed here: chapters start with the basics such as the characteristics of GIS data and moves to more advanced topics on managing and storing such data. From digital and video cameras to wavelength processing and active sensors, REMOTE SENSING FOR GIS MANAGERS is easy to access, yet packed with technical information. Very highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not technically oriented, this shows the what not the how
Much of the information put into GIS systems presents a view from overhead. This obviously lends itself to generating that data from overhead imagery collected by airplane or satellite. This book presents a good introduction of collecting and more important, using this kind of data.

As you might guess from the title, the book is aimed at the manager who is trying to get information from the GIS system/department. About half the book is on the sensors and sensor platforms. This includes not only sensors that operate in visible light, but also light in other frequencies such as infrared, and active sensors such as sonar, radar and lidar. Chapter 12 is on the applicatiosn of remote sensing within the specific firlds of agriculture, forestry, geology, meteorology, oceanography, climatology, archaeology, military and other areas including business intelligence.

Being a businessman, I was surprised at the infomation available from imagry. There is an overhead picture of a container port. Over time it shows that the loading/unloading cranes haven't moved and that a line of containers has been shown in photographs for some months. Perhaps this is an indication of deteriorating business conditions. Other images show new production buildings being built in an industrial plant indicating improving conditions.

Most of the book is by Stan Aronoff, but he has called on other experts for selected chapters. Fascinating book.

4-0 out of 5 stars combine business needs and GIS capabilities
Aronoff deals with the issue of integration. Of teaching a nontechnical GIS manager the essentials of GIS. So that she can understand what types of data can be extracted. More importantly, how this can be integrated with business applications. The manager sits at the intersection between the business needs and the technical capabilities.

Hopefully, by the time you finish this book, you will have learnt more about both aspects. The examples of existing applications using GIS data are a good grounding. The usage is expanding greatly, as in Google Maps, for example. Maybe you can also come up with a nifty usage. ... Read more
