The Health Physics Textbook
A new and improved version of a classic textbook!
THE book for all Health Physicists
New edition marred by typos and awkward editing For this 3d edition, the list of typographical errors compiled by colleagues and myself stands at four pagesand growing.Errors can be found in the text, the chapter problems, andtheir solutions.Other solutions which are not clearly wrong mayinexplicably differ from your own solution at the second significantdigit. Formulae are rarely derived from first principles. One exceptionis the change in wavelength for a photon undergoing Compton scattering froman electron, but, even here, a crucial equation (the relativistic energyinvariant) is conspicuously omitted, without which the final equationcannot be derived. The text does not even mention relativity in discussingCompton scattering.(The index does reference "Relativelyeffects" (sic) at pp. 4-11.) Equations and formulae contain, attimes, an unnecessary proliferation of multiplication signs and units whichobscures the underlying physical principles and the simplicity of theequations themselves.Students are better served by a clear mathematicalpresentation of the underlying physics, rather than being dropped into themiddle of an obscure equation made even more so by the inclusion of severalconstants whose only purpose is to make the units work out. While any texton this subject must deal with the unavoidability of old and new units, mysuggestion is to derive the formulae from first principles and deal withthe units issue (which, after all, only amounts to including appropriateconversion factors) separately as examples or chapter problems. Finally, the multiplication sign, "x", should be reserved forarithmetic and scientific notation, not symbolic mathematical equations. See, e.g., Equations (3.10), (4.31), (10.17), (10.32), etc., as exampleswhere the multiplication sign is unnecessary. The text also uses themultiplication sign even where numerical values are already set off byparentheses. The text's overuse of the multiplication sign gives the texta grade-schoolish flavor. ... Editorial Review Product Description Due to the diverse diagnostic imaging techniques available (x-ray/CT, Magnetic Resonance, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasonography) radiologic examinations are made of an enormous amount of images, which means that the elements to be described and interpreted by the radiologist are sometimes exorbitant. Furthermore, the expectations of the population and the ones of the physicians requiring examinations are growing, so that besides patients, also so-called clients (i.e., supposed healthy people) flow into everyday clinical practice of a radiology department, based on disease prevention/screening programs. Registration and interpretation/reporting modules of a computer-assisted radiologic reporting system were created to help the radiologist in his task. However, the radiologist is also expected to write a report with a diversified language, according to diagnostic technique(s), population type (client vs. patient; pediatric, adult, geriatric), pathology, and across all body areas. The authors wish to suggest a shared methodology to uniform as much as possible the way of writing a radiologic report, how to most effectively communicate the results of an examination. The important role played by language also from a legal-forensic point of view is also considered. |

Editorial Review Product Description This pathophysiology text offers a unique conceptual approach that facilitates learning by viewing pathophysiology as health care professionals do. Students will learn about general mechanisms of disease or alterations in human function—such as immune alterations or altered nutrition—and apply these processes to specific conditions. Chapters focus on fifteen core concepts of altered human function, selected by analyzing and clustering health conditions with high prevalence, incidence, and severity. Unlike a traditional systems-based approach, this novel approach shows how most diseases involve multiple body systems. A bound-in CD-ROM includes animations and an interactive game. Faculty resources include lesson plans, PowerPoint slides, additional case studies, and student assignment worksheets. Customer Reviews (2)
