Product Description
Forensic Engineering Investigation is a compendium of the investigative methodologies used by engineers and scientific investigators to evaluate some of the more common types of failures and catastrophic events. In essence, the book provides analyses and methods for determining how an entity was damaged and when that damage may have legal consequences. The material covers 21 common types of failures, catastrophic events, and losses that forensic engineers routinely assess. The range of topics include wind and blasting damage to structures, vehicular accidents, fires, explosions, hail damage to roofs and exteriors, lighting damage, and industrial guarding accidents.Additionally, the book offers an extensive discussion of the scientific method as it applies to forensic science and provides tips on organizing and writing an investigative report. The book also supplies the applicable codes and standards that regulate the profession, discusses the role of the forensic engineer in court proceedings, and addresses the role management plays in industrial safety. Each chapter is self-contained, highly specific, and succinct. Even more important, the analysis in each chapter is tailored to the answering of questions usually posed in the particular circumstances under discussion. The author does not skimp on the mathematical and scientific underpinnings of the subject matter. In that sense, Forensic Engineering Investigation contains the "good stuff" that is typically omitted in less challenging texts. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Review on Robust Design
The book is a good overview of Taguchi's methods with a few very good examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer on Robust Engineering... how to book
This book is quite readable, considering the topic, and does an excellent job of explaining the high level strategies of Dr. Taguchi's approach to optimization and experimentation. It also covers tactical issues like how to determine your ideal function and noise strategies.

I've had several classes on this subject but found that the book helped clarify some of the finer aspects of the strategy and helped explain why the strategy should work.(e.g particularly the strategy for dealing with interactions).

This book would not be sufficient to teach most people Robust Engineering, but it is a great reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars How to learn Robust Design
I like this book because it gives a very good introduction into the concepts of noise- and control-factors. It treats the concept of "energy transformation" good, which is important to find the appropriate Ideal Function for your product.

The examples are quite nice and most of them are illustrated by the p-diagram (parameter diagram). Unfortunately, examples are mainly form mechanical engineering. For me this is no drawback. Others may want to have a look on dedicated case studies from their field.

To my taste the formulas presented appear a bit uglier than they really are.

If you want to learn, how and why to use Taguchi's method, this book is an excellent tool for self-learning. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it is good.
Every section is written very clearly, a unusal thing in this field. I highly recommend it as supplemetry book.

5-0 out of 5 stars How telephone systems really work
Rosenberg & Kemp have produced a (large) book that is very readable
that explains clearly just what goes on between your phone and all the rest of a celluar system when you make or receive a call. They include the behaviors of standard dial landlines as well, showing where existing practices have shaped the newer technology. And they point out clearly the different competing systems in use (and about to be deployed) both in America and Europe. Both authors worked with Bell Labs in the old days and have been involved in CDMA analyses recently. If you want the facts in understandable prose, this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Game in Town
If you're looking to design a wireless telephony network, turn to this book.

If you are a salesperson wishing to sell to a wireless telephony company, or are otherwise seeking insight into the decisions such companies must make, this is also a good choice.

And it's probably your only choice.I can't think of any other books covering what this one covers. It is the only game in town, and if you need it, you'll get it whether it's well done or not.

Fortunately, the book is very well written and is comprehensive. The sections are well thought out, and the information as easy to understand as it can be made to be.I was very happy with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive and readable book on CDMA I've seen
As a pre-publishing reviewer of one chapter in this book, I can't claim to be 100% objective ... only 99%. However, as a teacher of seminars on CDMA, I'm often asked by students to recommend a book on CDMA that is readable. Most books on CDMA rapidly get to a depth that requires extensive mathematics and real dedication to stick with the book. In contrast, this book is very readable and does an excellent job of explaining difficult concepts without extensive use of complex mathematics. It is also one of the most comprehensive books on CDMA I've seen. It covers both the radio access technologies (all the major CDMA standards including cdmaOne (TIA-95), CDMA2000 (IS-2000 1x), W-CDMA/UMTS, and TD-SCDMA) and the network infrastructure for CDMA systems. Its strength is also its limitation: given its comprehensiveness, the depth on any given topic is limited. Still, for the vast majority of readers, I would think that this book hits the right level. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for Acceptance Sampling
I have struggled over acceptance sampling terminology and concepts over the years.. almost the whole duration of my student life in the USA, and working life in Malaysia both in the industry and the academia.

This bookexplains very clearly the interpretation and use of the OC curves. It tellsme especially what AQL and LTPD are, it also tells me why the producer'srisk is related to AQL while LTPD is related to consumer's risk (read page79-80).

This is the first time in my academic career (as a lecturer inthe Malaysia Science University) that I have gone further (and moreconfidently) in explaining about OC curves. This book has certainlyenlightened me v-e-r-y m-u-c-h on acceptance sampling. I have actually usedmany different books for my other operations management classes but I hitthe wall when I come to OC curves.

This book also proves my assumptionabout the sigma in Cpk wrong (read page 70 line #1.) Had it not been forthis book, I would have continued to assume that the sigma (in Cpk) is thesame sigma as in variance (sigma squared).

This book is succint. Straightto the point and in clear language. The authors do not "beat aroundthe bush". The figures clearly explain the concepts talked about in aparticular section for example fig 5.5, and also figure on page 73.

Thisbook has enlightened me, and uncovered many of my wrong assumptions. Moreto go. Yet to savor the rest of the book.

I would certainly recommendthis book to practitioners or students who are serious about quality. ... Read more

This book deals with fundamental issues concerning "product" sound quality design. Conventional books deals with only subjective evaluation methods or pycho-acoustics. Good part of this book is that it relates such conventional field to physical aspects governed by acoustics and mehanical vibration. However, from the view point of automotive NVH engineer who have much experience of improving motor vehicle sound quality, this book lacks advanced technology of improving excitation force spectrum or structural transmission characteristics in today's industry. However, engineers who want to begin sound quality design should read this book once.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pressing the Lean Advantage
Womack and Jones in 'Lean Thinking' state that each manufacturing organization consists of: An ordering system, A production System, and a Distribution system.
Womack and Jones go on to say, as part of a Lean Action Plan:" as soon as you have flow and pull...in the production System...it is time to go to work on the... Ordering System... pipeline to spur sales and increase market share." In other words - press the advantage.
Clausing's 'Total Quality Development' is about pressing the advantage that lean transformation provides to the organization.
Clausing defines 'total quality development' as "the modern way of developing new prducts that will be competitive in the global economy" and goes on to say 'Total Quality Development' "combines the best management, strategy, and teamwork resulting in greatly reduced new product development time, a reduction in new product development costs, and increased product variety that together result in increased customer satisfaction".
Fine - you say, but what exactly is 'Total Quality Development'?
It is the integration of concurrent engineering, quality function deployment (QFD), and Taguchi's quality engineering into a total product development process.
Clausing's stated objective in writing this book is "to transform product development to achieve competitiveness in the global economy"
This book takes my breath away. If you are asking yourself what is next after installing flow and pull for your product family this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful and Full of Content
This book covers it all: causes of reliability, measures of reliability, component modeling, system modeling, system analysis, and system optimization. It even has a great primer on distribution systems from a reliability perspective.

The great thing about this book is its ability to bridge the gap between theoretical treatment and practical applications. Although it is full of algorithms and equations, all are presented in the context of real applications and real results. It has truly broadened my understanding of of the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Combination of Rigor and Practical Advice
This is by far the best book I have seen on reliability planning, evaluation and engineering of electric power delivery systems. The book is well organized and very linear in its progression through its topics, so its makes for a very good textbook or self-study guide, as was the case for me.It has an extremely comprehensive index, which means its should serve as a good, quick reference in the future.

The book is pretty rigorous, and has a good bit of equations and theory, but what I appreciated is that there is a lot of common sense and good recommendations throughout, plus good data and tables on reliability, equipment, expectations, etc.I learned just a lot about distribution systems and reliability, and what to expect and how to make improvements in the real world, from this book.

But what I think is unique about this book and its greatest value was its combination of rigorous analysis of system configuration and indidivual equipment focus. You find a lot of stuff written that focuses on one or the other. There are books and technical papers on methods to analyze systems based on layout, load, switching capabilities, etc. (configuration), but they are often theoretical and neglect issues of equipment. There are also books on equipment lifetime versus loading analysis, condition evaluation and assessment, and maintainability. But rarely are the two combined well, and in one whole analytical method.

This is one of the best engineering books I have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Many years of use - Excellent Book
I have been a Reliability Engineer since 1976.The first 8 years for a commercial company and since then for a military contractor.I have taught several preparatory courses geared for the Certified Reliability Engineering Examination offered by ASQ. both under contract with ASQ and for co-workers in my own company. The first edition of this book is one of three books I found invaluable in finding material for those courses and for my daily work.It is filled with examples at varying levels of sophistocation which are critical for anyone checking their understanding of new concepts - both supplementing the text and in problem sets (with answers to many, but not all, of the problems at the back of the book). It contains derivations of the key formulas of Reliability.

I found very few mistakes in the first edition. If your goal is to obtain a good technical working knowledge of the mathematics of Reliability Engineering it is on a par with Reliability in Engineering Design by Kapur and Lamberson - another excellent book.If your specialty is Military Reliability (Availability, Maintainability and Durability), this book is not as useful for military terminology reference as the less mathematically thorough, but nevertheless excellent book, Practical Reliability Engineering by Patrick D.T. O'Connor.

I own two copies, one is literally full of my own notes.I would not part with it for anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars E E Lewis, Introduction to Reliability Engineering, 2nd Ed.
I have used this book for three years now in the final year undergraduate Mechanical Engineering degree programme as one of the major textbooks in Maintenance Engineering. I have found it to be very good and easy to follow. The material is easily understood by the class and they appreciate the relevancy of reliability in Maintenance engineering rather than just in manufacturubg and design.

It would however have been better if a companion textbook was available with solutions to all the problems given at the end of each chapter. This would be a very useful tool for the lecturers and other instructors using the book.
