4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, a bit damaged delivery
Book is great, a true manual for people who are passionate for Quality, like me.
The problem is, because I live far away (Brazil), the book reached me pretty damaged (small wraps on cover and apparently it got wet somewhere along the way).

5-0 out of 5 stars Sixth Edition continues the tradition of excellence!
Composing a new edition of a time honored classic reference always risks unfavorable comparisons with the previous editions. The Juran team has risen well to the challenge and composed a fresh, informative, and useful reference not only for Quality Professionals but for everyone with an interest in the quality of their products and services. The structure of the book makes it easy to zoom in on the Key Concepts (section 1), Methods and Tools (section 2), specific Applications for six different industry types (section 3), and the Quality role of Key Functions within the organization (section 4). The book extends on the idea presented in previous editions that Quality (what is called "big Q") is not just the responsibility of the quality professionals and doesn't just apply to the production processes of an organization; rather, it applies broadly to all functions and aspects of a business.

Juran's Quality Handbook: The Complete Guide to Performance Excellence (Sixth Edition) is definitely a book you should have on your reference shelf!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great examples!!
The new quality handbook is a fantastic reference to all things quality .I have utilized previous versions of the handbook for years in both my personal development and learning as well as the training of others.

What I like about the new version is that it's a little more direct with the information and packed full of relevant examples. It continues to build upon the proven quality theory and methods while displaying how they apply to modern day issues faced in a variety of industries. This version also includes some exciting new concepts that look at the future of the quality industry, particularly EcoQuality, a must read chapter!

5-0 out of 5 stars Time Honored Gold Mine!
This book is a time-honored gold mine! In an era when the global business market has fallen short in the arena of quality and integrity, the Sixth Edition of Juran's Quality Handbook is a welcomed just in time resource packed with principles that can facilitate the business world's ability to remember and revive the fundamentals that once made businesses and our economy strong. This book contains a wealth of knowledge for those who want to truly understand how do business the "RIGHT WAY" with integrity and quality at the helm.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must read for all quality leaders!
The handbook is a great update from previous editions. New chapters cover benchmarking, Six Sigma, Lean, and Ecoquality as well as chapters that break down quality challenges and solutions by industry. Many of the chapters are written by Juran consultants who specialize in a particular industry and offer their insight from their experience working with clients. Information is relevant to the current issues facing leaders today. I would recommend the handbook to anyone interested or with a background in Lean or Six Sigma or a quality leader in any industry! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent
This book is very inconsistent in helping you learn. For example, chapter 10 is full of notation on finite state machines, but things are hardly explained at all. There is hardly any reasoning for why you are generating all of these various sequences. Then look at chapter 17 and you get definitions like:

Learnability: The capability of the software product to enable the user to learn its applications.

Operability: The capability of the software product to enable the user to operate and control it.

Attractiveness: The capability of the software product to be liked by the user.

How can you go from the insanely complex finite state machine stuff to telling someone what attractiveness is. And they never vary to say "the capability of the software product". The book wastes time writing that out where it could be using that time to explain the concepts that are actually difficult. It definitely seems the book was written by two different people.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive book, up-to-date
I borrowed this book from library and have read a lot of it. I am a system/SW engineer with more than 10 year experience in every phases of SW engineering. Although now I am focusing on the areas of SW PM, I found I needed know more about to how to improve the quality of SW with lower cost. I read several recommended books and found this one perhaps is the best one which fit the condition of mine.

This book is very sysmatic, not only in the way of organizing the contents, but in the perspective of writing the book, so that you can get a lot of valuable information no matter you are a programmer, tester, PM, or QA. By reading the book, you can feel the solid theory backgrounds of the authors, which add readable features not difficulties. The best practices are also illustrated, and some of them are thoroughly discussed(such as code review). The up-to-date issues are well selected and I think most of the new technology trends and methodologies are included in this book so you can save much time to read more other books.

I am surprised to see there is no comment on this book yet, so I put my view here hoping it can give some help. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Testing is usually the most expensive, time-consuming and difficult activity during the development of engineering products and systems. Development testing must be performed to ensure that designs meet requirements for performance, safety, durability, reliability, statutory aspects, etc. Most manufactured items must be tested to ensure that they are correctly made. However, much of the testing that is performed in industry is based upon traditions, standards and procedures that do not provide the optimum balance of assurance versus cost and time. There is often pressure to reduce testing because of the high costs involved, without appreciation of the effects on performance, reliability. etc. Misperceptions are commonplace, particularly the idea that tests should not stress products in excess of their operating levels.
The main reason for this situation seems to be that engineers have not developed a consistent philosophy and methodology for testing. Testing is seldom taught as part of engineering curricula, and there are no books on the subject. Specialist areas are taught, for example fatigue testing to mechanical engineers and digital device testing to electronics engineers. However, a wide range is untaught, particularly multidisciplinary and systems aspects. Testing is not just an engineering issue. Because of the importance and magnitude of the economic and business aspects testing is an issue for management. Testing is perceived as a high cost activity, when it should be considered as a value-adding process.
The objective of this book is, therefore, to propose a philosophy of engineering test and to describe the necessary technologies and methods that will provide a foundation for all plans, methods and decisions related to testing of engineered products and systems. The book will help those who must manage and conduct this most difficult and uncertain task. It will also provide a text which can be used as the basis for teaching the principles of testing to all engineering students. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A survey...no more.
I purchased this book three years ago, when I took on work responsibility for testing and verification. After giving it a first and second read, I can safely say that it did not leave my bookshelf until I cleaned out my cube as I left for a different company.

The text is informative for those who have no background in the subject of true test engineering, but for those whose industries are governed by specific, required/mandatory methodologies, this book is not of much use.It is geared primarily to testing for the electronics industry, and even then only provides a "35,000 ft" view rather than the detail one would expect from an "engineering" book.Important (some would say essential) topics for reliability engineering (Arrhenius, Weibull, etc.) are mentioned but glossed over, leaving the reader to purchase additional $100+ volumes dealing with these subjects.

Again, if you're new to testing, it's a great introduction. If you have any exposure to the field, I would look elsewhere for more detailed reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good content, publisher has not done its work...
A very good book in content, O'Connor covers the major issues, provides resources and methods for driving deeper into developing appropriate test plans and does an okay coverage of test management. The book could do better from a Test Philosophy perspective, although the chapter on management comes close.

The drawback is the publishers quality of reprinting the figures. At last count there were 8 figures with missing or illegible text.Mostly this is annoying and not detrimental to conveying the concepts. However, the flow charts on test management / test plans are so bad as to be nearly worthless. It could be an issue with the particular printing I have.As of this review I have attempted to contact the author and publisher, but I do not expect a response.Amazon replaced the book, but the replacement also had the problems.

So would I recommend the book, yes, but only IF the figures are taken care of, otherwise I would say find a different source. If the figures are resolved then I would rate it a strong 4, maybe a 5.If the author grows the test management material then it would be a strong 5.

5-0 out of 5 stars Critial information
It is the very first book (that I'm aware of) written for test engineers and managers. This book is an overview of all types of testing.

The author's philosophy is excellent.....

"The author has never found a company or a project where it was considered in retrospect by those involved that too much was spent on a development test programme." Test Engineering by Patrick D. T. O'Connor.

When you consider that Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, the Comet IV and the Challenger failed not because of negligence, but because critical data slipped through the cracks, or was misinterpreted, this book may just prevent that next tragic unknown from taking place. Or at least arm engineers, and managers, as to what is taking place.

Highly recommended, from one in the business.

3-0 out of 5 stars A survey of test methods
I bought this book seeking practical information relating to testing of manufactured PCB assemblies.I found relatively little information on that subject, and the information I did find was of a general nature.

I got the impression that if you are interested in a survey of issues dealing with mechnaical failures, you might find more to like in this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars OK
This is only a reference book if you want to refresh your concepts. I bought it when I graduated and only used it twice since then. I would not recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still a Demand for the Industrial Engineering Function
There is a definite demand for this handbook based on the price I would say. Honestly, it is wide-ranging in its scope of the IE function reflecting the diversity of Industrial Engineering in general. I like the concise format for that very reason. I am an old fashioned Motion and Time Study IE and the ever evolving nature of the field based on exponentially improved communications and technology at our fingertips has slanted and re-postured the nature of Industrial Engineering. This new slant is well represented here and is an indispensable source of reference for new IEs and the old timers like myself. I was recently told that an Engineer is an Engineer is Engineer etc. That may be but you still have to say current in your field. This handbook is an invaluable concise reference and a good starting point for whatever diverse topics you wish to review and investigate.

2-0 out of 5 stars Demasiado volumen, poco didáctico.

1-0 out of 5 stars A generic and almost useless manual
I've been a professional IE for more than 15 years and I bought this "manual" thinking that it would actually be a summary of the most important tools used in this profession, but I realized that it is not.It is way to general and it has lost most of the formulas and calculations that are required as an IE.There is too much wording and too little math.If you are a manager and you don't care for the how to, this is good for you.If you are in the field, and you need a quick reference on how to calculate things and how to implement them , you got to look for another book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dream Come True Manual for IE
As an IE graduate I've first entered manufacturing and progressed to service management in the airlines, this is still the bible for my daily work reference. Topics cover enormous grounds useful in multi industries and yet each topic is given ample depth. Chapters are structured for easy reference and search. Even if you're not an IE, there is just so much you can use in the book. ... Read more

Through years of teaching experience, John S. Lawson and John Erjavec have learned that it doesn't take much theoretical background before engineers can learn practical methods of data collections, analysis, and interpretation that will be useful in real life and on the job. With this premise in mind, the authors wrote ENGINEERING AND INDUSTRIAL STATISTICS, which includes the basic topics of engineering statistics but puts less emphasis on the theoretical concepts and elementary topics usually found in an introductory statistics book.Instead, the authors put more emphasis on techniques that will be useful for engineers. With fewer details of traditional probability and inference and more emphasis on the topics useful to engineers, the book is flexible for instructors and interesting for students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Misses the point
One of these reviewers misses the point entirely. The worst DOE's are designed by statisticians alone , the best are designed with subject matter experts AND a statistician. It is only those that have suffered the curse of an "expert only" and a "statistician only"that feel the way you do. The technical stuff is trivial, the expert matter is critical, which is what Luftig and Jordan are trying to put together, and to help the academics realize. There IS a process! Get the research question in focus, and go from there. Sounds like you have never actually approached a problem from a realistic point of view in your life (or ran any "real" experiments).

Mike ( creator and analyzer of more than more actual experiments than you can ever think of)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Practical Resource for Industrial Experimentation
The previous reviewer missed the point...this book is not intended to be a book about what experimental design is. It is intended make it easy for the practitioner of industrial statistics to take all the fancy tools they have learned and use them in a real environment. The "endless checklists" are a redeeming feature, as they make industrial experimentation much easier by noting common pitfalls and doing a lot of the paperwork development for you.In my experience, the most common failure in the industrial application of statistics is not the use of the statistical tools, but in a failure of the logistics of the experiment. This book will help you avoid these issues.

This book bridges the gap between knowing the statistical tools and applying them in real life.

That said, the first edition of the book contains many egregious editing errors, so it is frustrating at times.

If you are looking for a book that delivers countless pages of set-up forms and checklists than maybe this book is for you.It focuses mainly on the project management aspect and lightly skims actual DOE philosophy.Ifyou are looking for a text that delivers real information about designedexperiments and analysis of experiments there are many others out therethat cover these FAR better. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference/Exam Prep Book, Poor Editing
After reading this book and the Quality Council of Indiana CQE Primer, I was able to pass the ASQ CQE Exam on the first attempt. This book is an excellent reference and was fairly easy to read.

However, a substantial percentage of the example problems in the book contain errors and omissions, most of which are typographical in nature.Errors include printing the square root symbol instead of the division symbol, "102" instead of "10 squared", the math shown simply not matching their answer (i.e., standby component example), example problems omitting where certain values were obtained (i.e., Weibull distribution example), etc.The sheer volume of errors is simply unacceptable -- especially for a second edition.

The Glossary, the statistics chapters, and the index all need improvement in my opinion. The Quality Council of Indiana CQE Primer provides much more detailed knowledge in many areas and has terrific example problems. However, the Primer does not have an index which I find is absolutely vital, especially for the timed ASQ CQE Exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Summary - Missing A Few Details
The book is a good place to start if you're studying for the CQE exam. After using this as my primary source and sitting for the exam, here's my recommendation on additional sources to fill in some of the book's weaker subjects: 1.) Find something that walks you through the steps of an audit 2.) Obtain the actual ASQ documents in the sampling section (the book leaves out a few crucial tables) 3.) Brush up on your basic probability (probability of X blue marbles in 5 succesive draws, etc).All-in-all a very good resource & easy to ready & understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for all software development managers and practitioners
If I owned no other books on information technology, I would want the four volume Weinberg "Quality Software Management" series. The books contain a wealth of practical information on managing the software development process.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I'd been introduced to this book when I started
I was recommended to read this book by Mark Barker (an associate of Parity Training) in 1999, after 10 years or so working experience. To say that scales fell from my eyes would be an understatement! Some of the concepts were familiar to me in a slightly different context (e.g. feedback) but Jerry does a superb job of applying some of these techniques in context.
If you've been in "the business" for any length of time you'll also chuckle at your own stupidity when Jerry talks about issues that we've all handled wrongly in the past.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get it and read it.
This book holds a special place in my heart. It's the first technical book I ever read in one sitting.

I've been in the software business since 1983. By the time I encountered Quality Software Management in 1992, I wasthoroughly cynical about books about software project management. By andlarge they were, and still are, preachy tomes that quote unverifiablestatistics and make dubious claims about "right" and"wrong" processes. Grow up, guys!

Jerry's books are different, and this is my favorite of all of his books. As I read QSM, I didn't feelpreached at or condescended to. I felt like, for the first time, someonewas offering me ideas for coping with the very difficult problems that facethose of us who work on projects where we don't have enough time, enoughinformation, enough skill, or enough money to do a perfect job of anything.Given our limitations, we have to make tradeoff decisions in light of thebest understanding of cause and effect we can muster. That's exactly whatmy organization was trying to do, in '92, when we were competing andwinning against Microsoft (oh, they eventually beat us by hiring away thetop third of our team, but that's another story). We just thought ofourselves as pragmatists, but when I read QSM I realized that our approachwas also scientifically sound.

Looking back, I see QSM as one of thehandful books in this field that actually helped me to become more expertat my job, and it's the first book I suggest to anyone who is serious aboutsoftware quality assurance or software project management.

Get it andread it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre
While I generally like Weinberg's more humanistic take on managing software, sometimes I feel like his lack of rigor is a detriment. His strategies and ideas are all well and I good, I agree with them completely, but his models are often too vague and he usually doesn't provide the beleaguered manager with much to go on besides platitudes.Overall I would say there isn't much (if any) new information in this book.Of course, I guess that depends on what other books you have read prior to this :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars A most enlightening introduction to quality.
I am not a software developer. When I stumbled across Gerry's book, I soon realized that I had found a hidden treasure. It contains within it the best definitions of quality that I have ever read. And he has a great sense of humor that helps make the lessons and insights you will get from the book easier to take.PS: His other books are equally great and should be read by software folks, as well as everyone else. Product Description
For Resilience Engineering, 'failure' is the result of the adaptations necessary to cope with the complexity of the real world, rather than a breakdown or malfunction. The performance of individuals and organizations must continually adjust to current conditions and, because resources and time are finite, such adjustments are always approximate. This definitive new book explores this groundbreaking new development in safety and risk management, where 'success' is based on the ability of organizations, groups and individuals to anticipate the changing shape of risk before failures and harm occur. Featuring contributions from many of the worlds leading figures in the fields of human factors and safety, "Resilience Engineering" provides provocative insights into system safety as an aggregate of its various components, subsystems, software, organizations, human behaviours, and the way in which they interact. The book provides an introduction to Resilience Engineering of systems, covering both the theoretical and practical aspects. It is written for those responsible for system safety on managerial or operational levels alike, including safety managers and engineers (line and maintenance), security experts, risk and safety consultants, human factors professionals and accident investigators. ... Product Description
Network operators are faced with the challenge of maximizing the quality of voice transmissions in wireless communications without impairing speech or data transmission. This book provides a comprehensive survey of voice quality algorithms, features, interactions, and trade-offs, at the device and system level. Using a practitioner rather than algorithm-designer angle, this book is unique. It elaborates on the root cause of impairments and ways for resolving them, as well as methodologies for measuring and quantifying voice quality before and after applying the remedies. The key issues are exemplified using case studies. Avoiding complex mathematics, the approach is based on real and sizable field experience supported by scientific and laboratory analysis. This title is suitable for practitioners in the wireless communications industry and graduate students in electrical engineering. Further resources for this title including a range of audio examples will be available online at www.cambridge.org/9780521855952. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for Engineers working in this field
I was introduced to this book by my colleague. He lent me a copy he had.I was an engineer in audio/acoustics who started to work in the mobile telephony field.I found a wealth of information in the book, and found the book easy to read at the same time.No high-brow, difficult to read writing at all.

I bought my own copy shortly after.I read this book again just prior to my interview with my present employer. It certainly helped me landing my job! This is an excellent book, and I heartlily recommend all who are working in this area.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great practical review of telecom voice quality issues
Dr. Perry has written a great reference on voice quality issues found in real-world telecom networks. This book goes beyond the "can you hear me now?" level of network voice quality. His careful coverage of voice quality concepts will allow newcomers to grasp the key essentials.Sufficient references are provided to allow a "deeper dive" into more technical details if required. The book's website offers several audio WAV files to demonstrate the concepts presented in the book.He assesses the risks to voice quality with the migration to IP based voice transport. ...
