Great Resource for pastured poultry.
After seeing this done on a farm in Ky thought I would try myself.This book has been a good resource on Pastured Poultry.Although I consider myself pretty knowledgeable in poultry I learned many things from the book.It is a little old but by far the majority of information stays the same.We are using the system and it does work well.I would highly recommend.

A wealth of information!
This is a very comprehensive look at poultry farming.I have raised chickens for food for my family in the past and it has been good experience but to raise poultry for sale is a whole other story.He lists the good the bad and everything that you need to know in between.Why re-invent the wheel when you can learn from somebody who has been doing it for years, what a time and money saver.

Common Sense
Mr. Salatin's approach is direct and easy to understand; while giving a good idea of the potential behind his method for raising pastured chicken he offers a realistic picture of likely trouble so the newcomer's expectations can be based on good, detailed information that is candid but refreshingly filled with basic common sense, which, sadly, is no longer very common. The detailed description of his system, accompanied with the reasoning behind it, is as practical a manual as anyone can desire to get started in the right direction by following a method with a proven track record that dispels unreachable fantasies while providing a well grounded vision of the opportunity for a successful enterprise without taking the romantic essence of the pioneering spirit which the Salatin's have resurrected in modern America. Book is wonderful!It is just what I wanted and needed. It is in wonderful condition. I would buy angin.

Excellent Book: Fascinating, Beautiful, Educational
I have no regrets after purchasing this book. It was very easy to read and understand, contained excellent images, and covered some very fascinating poultry breeds from the mundane to the exotic. The index of bird coloration was very helpful. The chicken breeds are separated into 3 categories (laying breeds, meat breeds and ornamental breeds), which I find is a nice touch. It does have some limited information on birds such as peafowl, ostriches, swans, etc. but its main focuses were chickens, geese, ducks and turkeys. I'm sure that any poultry enthusiast would enjoy this book.

Very informative on the different breeds of fowl. A great book to use as a reference. Large color pictures, detailed information. I wouldn't be without it.

Storey's Illustrated Guide to Poultry Breeds
I love this book which has tons of information about poultry plus wonderful color photos. Its lay-out makes it easy to find info. on any birds you might be interested in.
I only gave it 4 stars because so many of the photos are of the bantam -size birds instead of the full size of the breed. I know they are alot alike, but would prefer standard versions.

Good overview, but not enough detail
This was a good overview for raising poultry breeds, but not enough detail on ay specific one. I didn't feel confident after reading this that I had enough info to begin, (maybe I'm just overly cautious). I also purchased Storey's guide to rasing chickens and feel that it helped to fill in the gaps. I also recommend finding someone in your area who can serve as a guide and mentor in this field. There are always questions that come up once you get started.

Bestseller, definetely
If you are looking to know how to raise birds, dont look further, this book has everything you need as a started, buy read it and enjoy it, while raising birds, it just need some minors changings for the tropical climate, you need to look the local practices also to compere yourself, also is advisable to visit the local Agricultural Institute for more information

Descent book.
I thought this book was descent. This book is geared more towards chickens, turkeys, & ducks. It poorly covers guineas and game birds. This book did not help me much since I have guineas & pheasants.

Very in-depth
Not catered to the back yard bird grower. More for someone looking into commercial raising. I felt like the chapter on chicken biology was a poor choice to go into so much depth. I think time would have been better spent talking about something else. However, I learned allot and would recommend keeping it around as a reference.

Good info, boring presentation
I am a veterinarian interested in expanding my chicken knowledge.This book has good information but has very few pictures, and the way that it is arranged makes it difficult to look up rule outs for a disease based on symptoms observed.It is written for mostly high production systems, and doesn't have much info at all on individual problems.It seems to be written for British poultry vets, but it does also include US info.I would not recommend this book. ... Local writer! Stays relevant!
I am so excited to keep chickens again. I was so excited I got online and bought several books on the subject. What I like most about this book is how current it is. So many of the books I bought were written back before the egg or the chicken... :) But seriously, this is a practical guide that gives modern advice! Very handy!

More about cocks please.
This is a great book, growing up on a poultry farm I can agree with the author - it's not easy!

Hens can be difficult, getting the feltch balance is so hard, just how much do you give them? And should it be straw fed?

Managing cocks is just plain difficult! Cocls tend to get trapped in small places and rarely do what you want.If I had 10c for every time I have trapped a cock in the door I wouldn't need pocket money!!

Overall though a good book.

My four Rhode Island Reds are my first ever to care for and this book helped me to quickly know what to do without having to take a college course. It is helpful in building of and requirements of a coop,requirements for the growing chick into adulthood (food, lighting, temperature, water, protection and cleanliness.)I highly recommend this book and also bought onefor a christmas present for an owner of a small flock.Plus there is much more information like, illness& diseases, butchering, ducks, turkeys, and incubation.

Best book for the beginner on the market.
I own a small hatchery and poultry farm. We sell hundreds of baby chicks every month. When someone with little or no poultry experience asks for some good reference material for their new chicks, I point them to this book. Not for homesteador backyard flock owners
This is a great book for commercial chicken operations. This book is not much use for the small flock owner. For small flock or backyard flock owners I recommend "The Chicken Tractor" by the same authors..

Great for the Bigger Operation
This is a well written book with plenty of info on tested methods as well as the latest thinking and market-wise advise. It is mostly applicable to the larger scale operatons, though. I wanted something for a small number of chickens--one or two dozen--and so found this less useful. I should have bought a different book because of the scale of my needs, but that is not the book's fault.

Good for business, more than I needed
This is an excellent book. I just recently started raising chickens and was disappointed at the information available at the local library. I purchased Chickens In Your Backyard: A Beginner's Guide , Day Range Poultry: Every Chicken Owner's Guide to Grazing Gardens and Improving Pastures , and Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens: Care / Feeding / Facilities . Recent reading at the library about pasture raising livestock got me interested in this title. The volume they discuss is a little more than I was interested in, but that is not the fault of the book. It is well written, an easy read, and comprehensive in the amount of information it contains. The only thing I could add to Claudia Campbell's comments is that information is also included in business organization, strategies and marketing. If you go into poultry on this scale, it has to make a profit to be sustainable. I agree this book is a complete resource.

As for my ambitions, I found Chickens In Your Backyard: A Beginner's Guide an excellent introductory text and Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens: Care / Feeding / Facilities adequate for my needs. Both these books have ample reviews and I could not add to them. We live in a small rural area and the library depends on local donations. Chickens In Your Backyard and Day Range Poultry will be donated to the library. Storey's will be kept as a reference.

This fowl book hits a home run!
I just finished Day Range Poultry and am thoroughly impressed.They not only tell you what Day Range is, but compare it to other methods of raising birds listing the pros and cons of each.If you want to start raising birds, especially large numbers of birds, everything is here, in detail.How to set up a Day Range system for broilers, layers, and turkeys, including shelters, what worked and what didn't for them, feeds and feeding, protection from predators fencing and moving about the pasture for optimum manure spreading.
They talk a lot about designing a rotation system using pastured poultry with crops and other species to optimize your potentional profits.Everything is geared to optimizing the use of the land without high $ input while at the same time maintaining healthy, happy animals and increasing land fertility. I am a veterinarian, doing my residency in poultry medicine. This is by far the best book ever written about diseases of poultry. I have the enormous pleasure of working with one of the co-editors, and the work done in this book is exceptional. A must for anybody interested in the subject.

I cannot say that I have a book 'cause I don't have it. But working in a Centre for Poultry I had a chance to read and learn from this book. I was so impressed with the way that author of this book aproach to diseases of poultry and acctually made so easily understanding and comprehensing this important matter. I acctually started to learn the whole subject from the beginning 'cause it was the best way to get the whole picture. Very informative and interesting
I really enjoyed this little book even though I'm experienced at raising rabbits and poultry,it gives a little perspective on how challenging it was to obtain feed and rations during wartime and how important it was for people to raise rabbits and poultry during this time.It gives alot of useful advice for raising rabbits and poultry in a very practical and earthy way,I especially like that it describes the Oscend method of dressing a rabbit for the table and also offers great advice for maintaining a setting hen and hatching your own chicks and ducklings.I recommend this book for beginners and experienced poultry and rabbit keepers,it is an enjoyable and informative read.

Very British, but good.
I agree with Robert Plamondon in that the book is full of British poultry regulations, but it still has a great deal of good information. I think it would be very boring, however, for the first-time poultry keeper in America. The basics on housing, sanitation, and the marketing of eggs were addressed rather well.

I find it interesting that Robert Plamondon didn't like this book. Perhaps it's because he is the editor of a competing book which is recommended above instead of this one?

I haven't read this book, I'm trying to decide if I want to. It is recommended by Murray McMurray Hatchery.

Free Range Poultry, by Katie Thear
This is a very comprehensive book written especially for those who are interested in getting started with free-range poultry.Although the author is British and writes for the British market, she still includes much information that is specific to regulations here in the US.Breeds; housing needs; land management; feeding; poultry management; eggs; table birds; breeding and rearing birds; showing birds; marketing; commong problems and diseases.The problems and diseases section could be a little more detailed, but for those just interested in learning about this way of raising poultry, they could easily take what they learn here and then have the knowledge to look for disease management books with more information.I highly recommend this book!:^)

Excellent Book!
As 4H Leaders, we needed a book for our project to help new families figure out what type of chicken coop would be best, and get some ideas on how to build one. This book gives a nice variety of coop examples and is easy to understand, even for the novice builder. Well worth the price!

Best guide for the home carpenter
This book has excellent illustrations and details for building your own poultry houses.It is the best of all the books I've found so far in offering easy to follow instructions.Keep in mind, however, that even building your own can be expensive if you have to purchase all new materials.The difference in costs should be weighed when you decide to build your own or purchase a prebuilt one from a manufacturer.You might be surprised! If you can scrounge lumber, hardware, and chicken wire from used sources, you're 'way ahead!

Only basic skills are really needed, and this book tells you everything you need to know.

Great Book for Beginners
We were thinking about getting layers but didn't know much about care and housing.This book helped greatly in our decision making and has great ideas for design and construction of hen houses and other useful structures.Highly recommended for beginners.

Good for small projects
I bought this book on recommendation from someone reviewing Chicken Coops: 45 Building Plans for Housing Your Flock."Poultry House Construction" is certainly superior to that title, but is not exactly comparable."Chicken Coops" is all conceptual -- no measurements at all and some pretty crude drawings, but tons of ideas."Poultry House Construction" has good schematic drawings and measurements, with photos of finished projects, but is rather limited in its range of designs.

If you're keen on small-scale projects, this book is good: lots of nest boxes, arks and range feeders.There are also plans for four mid-sized coops with side- or top-access.If you are looking for plans for a large coop (say, for 10+ birds) that you can stand in, however, you won't find it here.I built a 6-ft. chicken ark (aka chicken tractor) using this book as inspiration, but you'll want to add your own touch to most of the plans.For my coop, I've had to look elsewhere.

I found How to Build Animal Housing: 60 Plans for Coops, Hutches, Barns, Sheds, Pens, Nestboxes, Feeders, Stanchions, and Much More exceptionally helpful for general information on construction -- from rabbit hutches up to giant cattle barns.If you don't have any real building experience, I highly recommend this title, even if you're just building a 7'x6' chicken coop like me.Check out the forum on "Coop & Run Design and Construction" at BackyardChickens[dot]com as well for a lot of great ideas and examples.

good book except....
Isn't it ironic that a book designed to appeal to the sustainable, local living crowd should be printed in China?I was going to give this book a 5 star review until I saw that.

On the content of the book...lovely.I literally read this book in one day.We are moving from big city to a small property in the boonies very soon, and I can't wait to try raising chickens. I found the book to be a great introduction.The chart for selecting breeds is helpful.

Direct and informative
I liked the directness of this care book.It is good for beginners with chickens.I preferred City Chicks though for a more down to earth and great knowledgable author.

GREAT BOOK! It has been well read here at out home
We are newbie chicken owners and this book has been an absolute delight! I have read it over and over and my husband, who already knows everything, has actually read it! He may have even learned something (smiling here).

The author explains how to raise chickens in a manner that you would expect from a friend who knows you well. She does not get too indepth or too simple...just right! She tells you how to get started in chickens at a variety of levels and how to do it in a manner than is best for you and the chickens.

Plus, her story of how she got into chickens is exactly like mine. We must stop factory farming of our animals and she supports that the right way...with her dollars, as do we.

GREAT BOOK!!!! I suggest it for anyone interested in chickens!

Great book about chickens in various relationships
This is a great book that has actual photographs of real Chickens.We have chickens in our yard so I can tell.

We just have egg chickens (no offense to Elroy the rooster), but the book goes into meat birds as well (we don't have room for that).

This book delves deep into the relationship between humans and chickens (well, as deep as it can).

Great Book
I love this book.I haven't had a bad meal yet!Recipes are easy to follow, ingredients are easy to find, pictures are great.Some meals take a long time to cook, but this is because you're really cooking from scratch!We have over 60 cookbooks, and this one is one of the favorites.

Well seasoned
I like this cookbook.Most of the recipes have sophisticated flavors without an all-day cooking extravaganza.Moreover, it's organized by season, so it's easy to find something that includes those items readily available during all times of the year.

Pretty good, but lots of focus on grilling
This is a pretty good book.There are a variety of recipes for beef (including steaks, roasts, ground), pork, poultry (primarily chicken, but some quail, duck, etc), lamb, and veal.The Williams-Sonoma publishers are masters at selling pictures to the audience and getting you to buy the book based on the picture (hey, they sold me! :) ).Each recipe is accompanied with a beautiful picture of the dish.Sometimes the pictures have side dishes in them that look equally appealing, but there is no recipe in the book for the side dishes (so the title is strict:this is only meats and poultry).There also is a small section in the front for creating sauces that are used in the dishes.I have made a few of the beef recipes and the chicken sausage fettucine with white wine (amazing and VERY quick to make), and have been happy so far.

My only major qualm with this book is that many of the recipes are geared for grilling.I know WS has other books on grilling, and this book seems to encompass many of the recipes.I do love grilled foods, but living in a small apartment, I don't have the luxury of firing up the grill like others may have.Most of the recipes that require grilling also have instructions for broiling or searing/grilling indoors, so you can likely still make the recipe--it probably just won't taste as good.Overall a good book for the money.However, it seems like a good portion of these recipes are in other WS cookbooks, so if you already have some WS meat, poultry, and grilling books (I do not), this may not be for you. ... THE GOOD COOK WILL MAKE YOU A GOOD COOK
Learning to cook is all about technique not recipes; that's what this excellent series is all about.Poulry is one of the best technique books you will find and the bonus is that there are some very great recipes in the back.I've had copies of this book ever since the series came out in the 1970's and 80's--this particular book on Poultry is my favorite.

This is a staple cookbook for chicken lovers
This cookbook is a must-have staple cookbook. Wanna cook chicken right? Check out this book. It teaches you the most essential techniques for handling chicken: slow braising, basting, roasting, stuffing, correct cutting, carving, etc.

I've made a lot of fantastic dishes from this non-descrip book, but it truly is an American classic. It even had some recipes that I didn't expect, like claypot chicken recipes. So many chicken dishes to peruse. I always turn to this cookbook for everyday fare.

This is my 'Bird Bible'!
I purchased a copy of this book originally in 1985. back when I didn't know what to do with a chicken except shake & bake.I have lived through my entire married life with it. I lost my original copy when I moved this year, and I was honestly heartbroken, as it is long out of print. I sit here on the verge of processing my shopping cart, wiping tears from my cheeks. I love this book, I can't make a bird without it. There is no substitute for the instructional pictures. Great book, but expensive as all hell
This is a really good, thorough livestock book. It covers more than a vet tech student will ever need to know about food animal production.

Having said all that, it's way too expensive for a mostly black and white book printed on cheap paper that's one step above newsprint in quality.

The only way someone would fork over 140 bucks for this thing is if they were forced to by an instructor.

If you have to spend 140 bucks on a damned textbook, at least this is a good one. ... Read more
