Product Description
Together, the nano explosion and the genomic revolution are ushering in a new frontier in drug delivery. In recent years we’ve seen how polymers can play a crucial role in controlling the rate of drug release, enhancing solubility and uptake, and limiting degradation and toxicity. In the very near future, they may well be used to deliver gene therapy.

While Polymers in Drug Delivery offers much new insight for the veteran specialist, this work has been compiled with the non-specialist in mind. It includes contributions from many of the world’s leading drug delivery specialists, yet avoids jargon and presents background information that initiates the next generation of scientists into the amazing work going on at the frontiers of this rapidly evolving science.

Targeting specific issues at the forefront of drug delivery today, this engaging volume—

·         Outlines the issues that must be considered when selecting a polymer for fabricating a drug delivery agent or other medical devices

·         Explains the more commonly used methods by which polymers may be characterized prior to use

·         Profiles polymer matrices that have been used in the formulation of solid oral dosage forms, drug delivery scaffolds, and hydrogels

·         Examines the issues surrounding the encapsulation of biologics within microspheres

·         Explores the use of nanoparticulates, especially solid nanoparticles and nanocapsules prepared from largely-water-insoluble cyanoacrylate polymers

·         Discusses polymeric micelles and investigates the potential of soluble polymer prodrugs and polymer nanomedicines

·         Details the contribution made by polymers and dendrimers to the gene delivery effort, which may one day lead to effective treatments for  largely incurable diseases

Noting a dramatic paradigm shift that is bridging the gap between materials science and life science, the editors have compiled this volume to paint an interdisciplinary portrait of drug delivery that will challenge young scientists to turn their attention and effort towards this critical branch of biomedicine. Containing state-of-the-art information for drug delivery scientists, it is also a great choice for medical and  pharmaceutical students and others seeking an in-depth introduction to the field. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars a nice introduction for mechanical engineers
Provides a thorough introduction to the field in a matter that is readily accessible for undergraduate mechanical engineers. The most complex chapter on viscoelastic theory is well-explained, and makes only a modest use of calculus.Discussess all the basics (creep, relaxation, temperature, load history, etc.)The Chapters are as follows:

1) Structure of the molecule
2) Structure of polymeric solids
3) The elastic properties of rubber
4) Viscoelasticity
5) Yield and fracture
6) Reinforced polymers
7) Forming
8) Design

For those interested in the computer modeling of the dynamic behavior of viscoelastic solids, there is another excellent book that delves more deeply (and requires a bit more math)."Mechanical Response of Polymers" by Wineman & Rajagopal will get you where you want to go when it comes to predicting the effects of time, temperature, and loading history. Also very accessible, although probably more suited to the graduate level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't praise it enough!
I have been working with polymer since last summer, my only teachers being books, of which I had about 10 before buying this one. As it was published in 2002, I hesitated to get it, but am I glad I did! Most of my previous books were inspiring and/or useful in one way or another, but this one and the two I bought that were written by Donna Kato have made me feel the caring of true teachers. They know how to put themselves in the student's place and explain in an understandable way.

Here are a few of the many things I learned from Ms. Hughes:
-TLS is so resilient that it can be used as the spine of a book.
-How to use Cernit clay together with Fimo to get the best out of both.(There is a lot here on the different properties of the different clays, though nothing, alas, on Kato polyclay, which I gather was not yet on the market. I did learn why my Premo pieces often chip when I drill them and what to do to prevent it.)
-Use a drop of mineral oil in the metallic wax Treasure Gold when it begins to get too stiff to control well (This is a problem I had been having lately, so the advice was doubly welcome.).
-The name of a quick cyanoacrylate glue that allows 10 seconds during which you can reposition delicate objects; this is longer than you get with Zap-a-Gap.
-That it is generally best not to varnish imitative pieces, which would spoil the aged effect that develops over time in real ivory, turquoise, etc. Instead, polish and buff.

I could go on and on just listing things I have learned about general technique, materials, tools, and the care of tools, but I urge anyone who is serious about polymer to get this book, because it is really wonderful in almost every way. I found almost all of the numerous pictures of polymer art thrilling and inspiring, and needless to say, the explanations of how to imitate a number of natural materials very helpful. I can't wait to try the amber!

If I could have asked more of this book, I would have liked a more comprehensive list of suppliers for the various materials and tools, but it does have a longish list of books ranging from polymer clay to various art books, including some great resource books for ethnic art.

As others have mentioned, this book may be a bit too much for complete beginners, but I think it would be an important addition to the book collection of anyone who seriously wants to develop his/her polymer claying abilities.

Polymer Clay Creative Traditions: Techniques and Projects Inspired by the Fine and Decorative Arts, The Art of Polymer Clay Creative Surface Effects: Techniques and Projects Featuring Transfers, Stamps, Stencils, Inks, Paints, Mediums, and More, The Art of Polymer Clay Millefiori Techniques: Projects and Inspiration for Creative Canework, The Polymer Clay Techniques Book, Creative Ways with Polymer Clay, Creative Techniques for Polymer Clay Jewelry, Stamping Effects in Polymer Clay With Sandra McCall, The Art of Jewelry: Polymer Clay: Techniques, Projects, Inspiration (Lark Jewelry Book), Polymer Clay Surface Design Recipes: 100 Mixed-Media Techniques Plus Project Ideas, Polymer Clay Inspirations

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterful
Victoria Hughes is clearly well experienced at polymer techniques and a master teacher. Her book is organized well, good pictures, excellent instructions, beautifully written. My favorite part, however, is the beginning chapters in which she discusses the creative process and how to approach your experience with the the clay as a true artist, regardless of your experience level. Her book is my favorite on this subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charasmatic Classic
This book shows a whale of a lot of timeless information about how to work with polymer clay. Topics include: clay itself; fundamentals, procedures, techniques for working with clay; the nature of color; color mixing; tools and molds; materials commonly (and not commonly) used with clay; aspects of design; more. Ms Hughes gives clay recipes and gives projects. Directions tell the `how' and include the `why' for details so that I can catch the principle and remember it.

Having spent hours and hours and hours reading on line at the major polymer clay sites, there are a couple of names that stand out. One is Judith Skinner for the now ubiquitous skinner blend. The other is Victoria Hughes for these "imitative" techniques that produce wonders of translucence and style.

I originally got this book when it was first published. I lent it to a friend who didn't return it. I got another one; ditto. Several copieslater, I gave my copy-of-the-moment to my grandson. I forgot that I'd given it to him, and so looked all over the house for it... repeatedly. At last, I've gotten another copy. This is a classic that I refer back to time and time again. To say this book is `good', would be like saying that Obama is a `pleasant' man.

1-0 out of 5 stars Puzzled
I can't understand why this book has such rave reviews. This is the reason I purchased it but was very disappointed and sent it back.I think it is a waste of money and maybe my view is based upon the fact that there are so many good polymer clay books that followed this one.If I hadn't sampled these newer books maybe I would be like the other consumers here, giving it five stars. In all honesty, save your money for something better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Victoria Hughes is the best!
Polymer: The Chameleon Clay was the first polymer clay book I bought. It's not really geared toward beginners, but I've never been afraid to jump in with both feet. I'm glad I did! Victoria Hughes is a pioneer in making polymer clay look like just about anything. While I've since seen alternate techniques that make creating faux bone or stones simpler, I've never seen an technique that does it more realistically than hers. I regret I've never had a chance to take one of her classes.

In addition to the wonderful techniques for mimicking other materials, this book is inspirational. It showcases wonderful art or Hughes and a number of other talented artists. Exciting techniques, a wide variety of projects and beautiful photography combine to make this book remain one of my favorite books on polymer clay--and I now have quite a library of them! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must !
The late professor de Gennes was frequently described as a modern Newton. While the comparison is surely ill-grounded, de Gennes has a premium place in the pantheon of Physics for his far-fetched contributions to so many areas of physics (ranging from superconductors, to biology, and, of course, gels and polymer physics).
In the introduction to his book, Prof. de Gennes clearly states that he wrote it with the theoretically-oriented scientist as well as the experimentalist in mind. Indeed, the book was written at a time the subject was rocketting and developping at a brisk pace ; de Gennes' aim through this work was to make the many results obtained and their various theoretical interpretations available to the guys who, in the end, made all this progress possible.
Note that the book was The one to learn all that stuff, as polymer physics had a great deal flourished with the work of a group of French scientists (at the CEA lab).
The sections of this book summarize the properties of polymers and the models that were devised to explain those.
The final chapter is on the renormalization group.
On the whole, the book is indeed also a great introduction to general methods in soft condensed matter (random-walk, a little field theory, phase diagrams, and so on).
Needless to say, it has also become a classic in polymer science.
Rightly so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent treatise on scaling concepts!
de Gennesis one of the most eminent polymer physicists of our times, and this book is perhaps the most significant book in polymer physics. All books by this author are treasures of knowledge, concepts introduced in simple, yet elegant way. A must read for anyone who wishes to appreciate the structure and dynamics of polymeric materials! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars interesting
I got this book from the library and I am not sure, if I am going to buy it. These project are not to my taste at all, but the author does show some interesting techniques that I was not familiar with. The faux tortoise shell pattern does not look like tortoise at all, but it is an interesting and attractive pattern that I would consider using for various projects. Her Mokume Gane construction is the simplest I have seen so far. The faux faberge pill box is one of her more attractive ideas and this is the first time I have seen embossing powder used as an enamel-like glaze. All in all, as with her other book "Polymer Clay Extravaganza", I was intrigued with the techniques, but not really interested in any of the the projects she presented. Some items were pretty good, just not my style - others were simply cheap and cheesy looking.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a good polymer chemistry book...
This book is indeed full of errors. The kinetic sections were too unorganized and full of errors. The kinetics were frustrating enough without the formulas being wrong in the first place. Also, the book will derive multiple ways of solving for the same thing and bury what you really need to understand the concepts. The synthesis, nomenclature and production sections were okay at best. I will say this though, by having such a bad book I really learned a lot trying to sift out the information that was needed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Polymer Class Textbook
This book is an ok read, I actually bought it for one of my POlymer Chemistry Classes. It's not as dry as some textbooks i've read, but it is a bit confusing at times. The problems at the end of the chapters definitely help to see if you understand the concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Polymer Chemistry
This book was in excellent condition. The contents are well written, concise yet easy to follow. The questions at the end of the chapters are pertinent and thought provoking without ambiguity.I was pleased that it shipped so fast, and look forward to finishing it as an indepent study. With the negative reviews I have read of the third edition, I am glad I opted for the second.

2-0 out of 5 stars I agree, the binding is very nice
However this edition is full of ERRORS!An extremely frustrating book to try to learn out of.Did i do it incorrectly or is the equation printed there wrong or is the answere printed over there wrong, or maybe the question itself has a typo......who knows! My professor for this class was familiar with the first edition, but agreed to go with the second edition after we (the class) found it for $4 on here, then he had to go through and correct all the mistakes for us.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book on Polymer Chemistry
I used this book in conjunction with my Physical Chemistry book when we had a section on macromolecules. The coverage of material I needed for my class was applicable, readable, and spelled out in a way that made it easy for me to understand the subject matter. I have also read through the book outside of my Physical Chemistry class, and I believe it is on the more readable side. The text has a good supply of worked out examples in the text, but sometimes falls short on practice problems. Most of my experience with this book comes from using it in conjuction with other books - this book really shines at its explanation of the subject matter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!
This book was an excellent and foolproof guide for me because I have been fumbling around with clay and getting frustrated. There were so many tips and tricks that I had never found in other books or seen on tv. This made a huge difference in the quality of my finished pieces. I can't thank Lisa enough for her great concepts and approachable style. After flipping through the preview I new I had to have the book for the techniques, but after getting it as a gift from my best friend, I loved it even more for the great ideas for gift and decor projects. One of the reasons I stopped painting is because my walls were all covered. Now I don't have to feel guilty in creating since I have a great new treasure trove of ideas for creating useful items for around my home and functional gifts for others. The best part about the clay is how easy it is to customize the colors of clay to fit my decor and personal style. I love adapting some of the concepts or techniques to other projects in the book to come up with new and different ideas that become truly my own. It's truly user friendly and fun! Best of all is that Lisa provided contact information in the book for her website where I contacted her with a general clay question. She responded to my e-mail immediately. I didn't expect a response and such a nice one. For an author with so many titles, Lisa is truly a giving and down-to-earth soul. I'm anxoius to get her other titles.

Product Description
Polymers in Solution is devoted to the static properties of flexible polymers in solution. It presents the progress made by both theory and experiment in the years up to its original publication in 1990, and remains one of the most advanced books available on this subject. Despite the variety in the chemical composition and physical properties of long polymer chains, when in solution they show a universality in their behaviour. On the experimental side, the use of photon and neutron scattering has led to a better understanding, while the use of computer simulation has also produced interesting results. This work is the result of a collaboration between a theoretician and an experimentalist, who have both worked for many years on polymer solutions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
although it arrives a little bit late, yet it's a good book with reasonable price

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers them all!
I haven't read it all, but through my quick glance this is a very helpful book. The book covers briefly regarding chemistry. However, it spends lots of ink on physical properties, their testing, and processing, which is very useful for application purposes. You get a complete picture regarding the make, the test, and the use of polymers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Great book, easy to follow instructions, great for learning the ropes of crafting with polymer clay.

2-0 out of 5 stars It should be in color
This was such a disappointment.I expect to see a lot of color in an art illustrated book, but it is almost entirely black & white. It really takes away from the integrity of this book.
I have other books by both of these authors, and the others a beautifully illustrated.
This was not a good idea.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs more color
The book gives you a rundown of what kinds of clays there are, what tools to use, and walks you through various craft projects. Though there's pictures for just about every step, they're all in black and white. The pictures don't really do much for such a colorful medium like polymer clay.

The table of contents doesn't reveal much about the book's contents. Chapter titles like Sentimental Circle, Bangle Beauty, Cute as a Button, and Crazy Daisy are cute enough, but you have to browse through the book to find out exactly what all these things are. Browsing would be more fun if the pictures were all in color.

There's not that much focus on technique and how to make your own unique projects. It's mostly about how to make various objects in a very specific way (a starry clock, a haunted candle, etc.), though I suppose there's nothing to stop anyone from tweaking the projects and taking away ideas or tips that can be reused.

Overall, it's not a book I'd recommend.

2-0 out of 5 stars very dissapointing
i bought this book because of its two great authors but when i got it i found that other than the finished product all pictures are B&W which is a shame when doing a book on polymer clay which is such a colorful medium.
in addition, most of Barbara's projects shown in this books are projects that i have from her other (very good) book "stamping with clay" ... Read more
