It distinguishes itself from other books on the subject by being a seamless story of the advanced aspects of the rotational molding process. There are seven chapters within the book. The US market for rotational molding products was one billion pounds in the year 2000. The growth of the rotational molding industry has grown at 10 to 15% per year. With this growth has come an increasing need for details on the complex, technical aspects of the process. ... Read more

Product Description
A Speaker's Resource: Listener-Centered Public Speaking embodies an innovative, classroom-proven technique for teaching public speaking that sets it apart from other texts and handbooks. The listener-centered approach— using a framework known as listenability—relies on two major principles: conversation and considerateness. Considerate speakers prepare and deliver their presentation from a listener-centered mindset and the heavy reliance on the conversational approach allows them to use their own voices as they do so. Using a student-friendly tone, lively examples, and practical advice, the handbook helps students develop successful speeches from the first week of class. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Still recall it after 35 years!
As I read the premise for the newly published "Black Monday" I thought of a book I'd read in the early 70's that involved plastic eating bacteria wreaking havoc on a modern world that used plastic in just about everything.

As I recall, the story is about two individual developments:

The first is a form of plastic that rapidly breaks down once exposed to oxygen (or perhaps just air) that is intended to address the ecological issues associated with beverage and food containers made of plastic (mostly soda bottles). The idea being that you remove a very thin outer layer from the container and consume the drink and simply toss the package because it will quickly decompose into harmless, maybe even eco-friendly chemical components.

The second involves a researcher who is trying to create a microbe that will "consume" plastics to solve a similar ecological problem.

The research microbe "accidentally" gets into the sewer system of London where there is ample supply of nutrient in the form of the remains of the oxygen sensitive bottles. The combination of the two quickly evolves into a strain that has a taste for any and all plastics.

Plastic gas lines meet with electrical wires that are no longer insulated by their plastic coatings and, well you get the idea. The bacteria follow anything that is plastic from the underground into the streets of London and civilization is threatened by the loss of all technology.

I particularly remember the ending leaving an opening for a sequel.

I never understood why it was not made into a movie. Perhaps it was too closely associated with The Andromeda Strain. Still in an age of Towering Inferno, Earthquake, and the Poseidon Adventure it seemed to be a perfect scenario.

If you can find it, it is worth a read!

5-0 out of 5 stars PLASTICS CHANGE AND CREATE CHAOS -- IT COULD HAPPEN!
Speculative Science Fiction is a more rare genre than the ultra fantastic so commonly seen and therefore the more fascinating and sometimes frightening! As seen in this book, bacteria acquire a new taste, whichmight seem harmless to the average 'Joe', but the author takes one to themegalopolis of London where we soon learn that from one little accident, mankind faces a threat to its future and a sudden return to urban anarchy.Within the 246 pages of the 1971 hardbound is found a new world undergroundwhere MUTANT-59 finds refuge and new fuels, much to the horror of thoseabove and below ground as anything plastic begins to disintegrate. Theramifications of this will amaze you and leave a certain unease hauntingyour thoughts for some time to come. It could be called a quick read, butit is so well written that it could provide a crash course in polymereducation, yet it is never slow or wordy but takes you right along into theinvestigation by its intrepid protagonist, Luke Gerrard, and even into hislove life to create a three dimensional character. Will he stop the speardof MUTANT-59, or will it cause the downfall of all mankind by breaking outof England?

The author did himself a credit in this version ofspeculative science fiction, but this book did not originate as such; itstarted as an episode of the British TV series "Dune Watch" whichhas not yet appeared in the States, and Mr. Pedlar also wrote for the TVseries "Dr. Who". It is said that this book was inspired by themovie "Andromeda Strain" which also involved, eventually,plastic-eating bacteria and the problems they brought. The book was issuedin both hard and soft cover, so Amazon may be able to locate it for you. This book has been said to deal with 'a biological time bomb', but it alsois a unique view into a place and time as one sees London from Carnabystreet in its 'glory'(?) days to the vast underground (subways) whichcontained an ironic view into the past during the "Blitz" ofWorld War II. If you like plastics and history, drama and chemistry, thisbook is for you! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good result for the bold proposal to cover all aspects of the surgical face
This book has a concise approach on a region with infinite aesthetic and functional variations. Good source of general information about facial plastic surgery. As an oculoplastic surgeon, I can say this book adds some ideas about the areas surrounding the one in which I mainly act but doesn't offer any detailed or deep knowledge about all the face - including oculoplastic surgery.

A very good, but not fantastic, result for the bold proposal to cover all aspects of the surgical face in only a thousand pages. The book is very very good, but I'm sure that the authors are better than it.

Product Description
Mid-twentieth century table radios made primarily of brightly colored plastic represent a relative newcomer to the radio collecting arena. With designs that often resembled contemporary automobile grille and headlight configurations, these affordable radios were made by the major electronics companies as well as dozens of others with lesser known names. These examples of American industrial design and popular culture were once plentiful, and today they can be found at flea markets, garage and house sales, secondhand stores, and "antique" shops specializing in modern design. Colorful and collectible, mid-century table radios are both available and affordable. With more than 430 full color photographs of radios, plus advertisements and black and white vintage photos, this pioneering book is a must for anyone interested in radios, mid-century industrial design, or popular culture. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Turn on and tune in to this book
If you collect mid-century plastic radios you should own this book.Sixty-six manufacturers are represented with 450 color photos, the popular companies, such as Crosley, GE, Motorola, RCA and Zenith each have several models shown.

Besides a photo of the radio there are plenty of close-ups of tuning knobs, speaker grills, frequency ranges and each maker has a close-up of their logo. Also included are some period ads from the fifties.

Page 176 shows the front of a Trav-ler 5022 from 1950 and on the facing page is a shot of the back of the set. What a contrast, while the front is the best the marketing/design folk could come up with the back shows a clutter of wires, batteries and evidence of cheap mass production.

Looking at the design of the various models it becomes clear that as these radios all do the same thing it became importantto sell the product on other (non-existant) virtues. The names (Wide-fi, Transitone) reflect high technology, big tuning knobs reflect scientific precision, some makers logos are heraldic reflecting snob values, the plastic cases were in bright eye-catching colors.

I think it would have helped if the dimensions of the sets had been included and the photography is very bland with the radios set against insipid backgrounds.Radios can look good, have a look at Philip Collins 'Radios:The Golden Age' and 'Radios Redux', dozens of beautiful shots mostly against a black background which make the radios jump out from the page.

This is a book though that any serious collector and those interested in fifties popoular culture and product design should have. ... Read more

I have ever encountered.A large 14" x 11", which allows for small, large and cornered designs of various categories including borders, backgrounds, traditional, special shapes, designs from different countries, holiday designs, and much more! The designs are printed ON ONE SIDE ONLY which is extremely helpful when one wishes to use a page on a lightbox, as only one design shows through. The spiraled binding is a superb plus since it enables the pages to be laid out separately for scan or lightbox use.So easy to use, scores of designs to choose from, ECONOMICALLY PRICED (so much more for the money than any other book I have researched).....Ms. Emery has done all of the work to make it easy for us.Thank you, Linda Goodmon Emery, for providing a fine product for quilters.

This (164) pager reads real easy; I actually felt like I was reading an extended devotional. Sandras brings up some great points on how easy it is for those of the CHRISTian faith to get caught in a system of doing rather than experiencing the ultimate love of our Lord.

There were several interesting points I made sure to highlight. I appreciated his description of God's prodigal nature:

"prodigal: One who extends money extravagantly, viciously, or without necessity; one that is profuse or lavish in any expenditure; a waster; a spendthrift.

If we apply this definition to the characters in the parable Jesus tells in Luke 15, then the story is not just about a prodigal son (who represents us), it is also a bout a prodigal father (who represents God). God and humanity both are lavish and wasteful. One in a lift-stealing way and God in a life-giving way."

Sandras seems very willing to allow his readers to share in some of his personal struggles; that is a characteristic of an author I always admire (when appropriate). That is actually a topic point later in the book--being willing to share our hurts and failures with others. The story he told of Budapest Frank was pretty affirming (page 91--read it!).

One last comment I underlined was towards the end. Speaking of trying to do the good that God wants us to, he talked about the difference between committing and surrendering (committing yourself to do, or not do, something and surrendering to God and allowing Him to make the change):

"The biggest difference between commitment and surrender is who you put in control: God or yourself. Give up trying to overcome your hurt, addiction, and brokenness. Surrender. It is the only way you will succeed."

I did feel like he went overboard trying to come up with as many illustrations, or quips as he could. Overall, I enjoyed the read and am considering reading his other advertised book Buck-Naked Faith.

4-0 out of 5 stars Seeking Spiritual Depth in a Shallow World
Sandras goes after the shiny veneer we all have within North American Christianity. In the process he pulls no punches and weaves together his own failures and struggles with emptiness and Christian fakery. Something I can also identify with. It is rare to find a pastor throw himself 'under the bus' so often and with such humility, but Sandras does that with enough grace for himself and others.

Here are a couple of text grabs that I underlined in my copy:

Page 82: "The easy road of pat answers and pretend certainty lulls us into a catatonic spiritual stupor. Some of the most boring Christian I know are the ones who have every question answered, every behavior controlled, and every hardship glossed over with some pious Christian slogan.Spiritual suburbia has roads that are so smoothly paved and so straight and flat, that if we looked West we could see the back of our heads"

Page 153:He talks about American evangelicals as having a "...Wonderbra spirituality. We use whatever contraption we can to pump up what little substance we actually have..."

This is a great book for anyone who feels stuck in the routine of church life. This is an essential book for those who already know they live in Spiritual Suburbia.

5-0 out of 5 stars To be Real, or Not to be Real? ; that is the question
Plastic Jesus helped me in my search for genuine faith. Raised in the 80's when nearly everything was plastic, I have sat in church for years looking for someone to pop the bubble of what Eric refers to as spiritual suburbia. Thank you, Dr. Sandras for risking your own reputation with your peers to help others experience God, not just read about Him.
