Product Description
Improvements in adaptation and maturity leading to greater yield are the most important criteria for the acceptance of a new crop cultivar, since it is the yield which dictates the economic value of the crop. Therefore, yield improvement is one goal of virtually every crop breeding program. Many such programs have tended to concentrate on identifying the genetic traits responsible for higher yield and selecting each of them in the later stages of the breeding cycle. However, selection for yield per se is still the most effective method, since it is a combination of traits, operating within the limits of the system, which finally determines yield. This book presents a whole-system, or holistic viewpoint for the improvement of adaptation, maturity and yield. Central to its thesis is recognition that system-established changes in levels of the components of the plant system, within a constant capacity, i.e. within the limitations of the system, determines yield and other cultivar characteristics. It goes on to describe how this can improve our understanding of plant systems and enable breeders to maximise performance under prevailing field conditions. Based principally on 25 years research by the authors, the ideas presented in this book are essential reading for crop physiologists and plant breeders. ... Read more

Product Description

This textbook covers Plant Ecology from the molecular to the global level. It covers the following areas in unprecedented breadth and depth:

- Molecular ecophysiology (stress physiology: light, temperature, oxygen deficiency, drought, salt, heavy metals, xenobiotica and biotic stress factors)

- Autecology (whole plant ecology: thermal balance, water, nutrient, carbon relations)

- Ecosystem ecology (plants as part of ecosystems, element cycles, biodiversity)

- Synecology (development of vegetation in time and space, interactions between vegetation and the abiotic and biotic environment)

- Global aspects of plant ecology (global change, global biogeochemical cycles, land use, international conventions, socio-economic interactions)

The book is carefully structured and well written: complex issues are elegantly presented and easily understandable. It contains more than 500 photographs and drawings, mostly in colour, illustrating the fascinating subject.

The book is primarily aimed at graduate students of biology but will also be of interest to post-graduate students and researchers in botany, geosciences and landscape ecology. Further, it provides a sound basis for those dealing with agriculture, forestry, land use, and landscape management.

Charles Robert Darwin (1809–1882) has been widely recognized since his own time as one of the most influential writers in the history of Western thought. His books were widely read by specialists and the general public, and his influence had been extended by almost continuous public debate over the past 150 years. New York University Press's new paperback edition makes it possible to review Darwin's public literary output as a whole, plus his scientific journal articles, his private notebooks, and his correspondence.

Product Description

The halophytes are highly specialized plants, which have greater tolerance to salt. They can germinate, grow and reproduce successfully in saline areas which would cause the death of regular plants. Most halophytic species are found in salt marsh systems along seashores or around landlocked inland lakes and flat plains with high evaporation. The halophytes play a very significant role in the saline areas specially in the coast by overcoming the salinity in different ways, viz. with regulating mechanisms in which excess salts are excreted and without regulating mechanism, which may include succulents or cumulative types. Besides that they protect coasts from erosion and cyclones, provide feeding ground and nursery for fish, shrimps and birds.

Halophytes get increasing attention today because of the steady increase of the salinity in irrigation systems in the arid and semi-arid regions where the increasing population reaches the limits of freshwater availability. In many countries, halophytes have been successfully grown on saline wasteland to provide animal fodder which have the potential for rehabilitation and even reclamation of these sites. The value of certain salt-tolerant grass species has been recognized by their incorporation in pasture improvement programs in many salt affected regions throughout the world. There have been recent advances in selecting species with high biomass and protein levels in combination with their ability to survive a wide range of environmental conditions, including salinity.

Product Description
Mitochondria are critical organelles in the metabolic regulation of almost all eukaryotic organisms. Knowledge of their biochemistry and molecular biology in plants has been fuelled over recent years by the rapid progress made in genome sequencing and the ability to manipulate gene expression.

Plant Mitochondria contains chapters written by many of the world’s leading researchers in this area, bringing together and reviewing for the first time many recent advances. Contents include coverage of mitochondrial dynamics, mitochondrial genome instability, expression of the plant mitochondrial genome, import of nuclear-encoded mitochondrial proteins, mitochondrial respiratory complex biogenesis, supramolecular structure of the OXPHOS system, mitochondrial electron transport and oxidative stress, mitochondrial metabolism, cytoplasmic male sterilities and mitochondrial gene mutations, and the mitochondrion in plant programmed cell death.

Plant Mitochondria is an extremely important and timely addition to Blackwell Publishing’s Annual Plant Reviews series. David Logan, well known and respected internationally for his work in this area, has brought together a truly valuable volume of great use and interest to plant scientists, cell and molecular biologists, and biochemists. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where biological sciences are studied and taught should have copies of this important book on their shelves. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Water Relations of Plants
Except from book's Preface:

"The importance of an understanding of the water relations of plants is indicated by the ecological and physiological importance of water. Not only is the distribution of vegetation over the earth's surface controlled chiefly by the availability of water, but crop yields are more dependent on an adequate supply of water than on any other single factor. This book atempts to explain the importanceof water by describing the factors that control the plant water balance and showing how they affect the physiological processes that determine tha quantity and quality of growth. It is intended for students, teachers, and investigators in both basic and applied plant science, and it should be useful as a reference to botanists, agronomists, foresters, horticulturists, soil scientists, and even laymen with an interest in plant water relations. As attempt has been made to present the information in terms intelligible to all fields of plant science. If the treatment of some topics seems inadequate to specialists in those areas, they are reminded that the book was not written for specialists in soil or plant water relations, but for those plant scientists, upper-level graduates, and graduate students who need a general introduction to the whole field." ... Product Description
A firm grasp of the functions of living organisms is one of the most important prerequisites to pharmacy study. The long-awaited second edition of Essentials of Human Physiology presents concepts in physiology in a way that prepares students for their subsequent study of pathophysiology, pharmacology, and pharmacotherapeutics.

Thoroughly revised and updated, this text maintains the clarity of the first edition, yet provides important new information to give students a solid grounding in some of the most important aspects of pharmacy. As with the first edition, the book begins with an overview of the fundamental aspects of cell membrane physiology with particular emphasis on nerve cell function. This is followed by a detailed discussion of the two major regulatory systems in the body: the nervous system and the endocrine system.

The book then continues with in-depth presentations of the reproductive, muscular, cardiovascular, immune, respiratory, digestive, and renal systems. An important focus throughout the text is how tissue and organ function are regulated in order to maintain homeostasis.

New in This Edition:

·        All 19 chapters updated and expanded

·        Revised and additional subsections of pharmacy applications

·        New sections on medical terms with pronunciations and definitions

·        New chapters on the reproductive and immune systems

·        Additional figures and tables to clarify information

.

This book was written by Laurie Kelly McCorry, a professor of physiology for eighteen years. Using simple, straightforward language, the text presents the science of physiology clearly so that undergraduate students will understand the relevance of these concepts as they relate to the practice of pharmacy. By studying and mastering the principles in this text, students will develop a secure foundation in human physiology so that they are better equipped to meet the challenges in their pharmacy career. ...
