Product Description

5-0 out of 5 stars A glimpse into reality of life~
A lite overview of the inside world of a private investigator. What the author shares of his experiences captivates your inquisitive nature of the darker side of human kind. A fast easy read for all levels.

5-0 out of 5 stars PLAIN TALK FROM A GREAT PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR
Anyone interested in human nature and its complexities should consider reading this book, especially during these times of a constantly growing new breed of elusive bad guys. The book cites real cases investigated by a veteran PI. The idea, in my view, is to read these cases between the lines and apply behaviour objectively in your human interactions. It will help you to overcome personal bias if you are willing to get past the rosy glasses, as it were. You will be somewhat reticent about being naive, you might just become a PI in your own right. And, that may save you considerable pain and embarrassment in your lives. ... Read more

Product Description
The vast majority of automatic controllers used to compensate industrial processes are PI or PID type. This book comprehensively compiles, using a unified notation, tuning rules for these controllers proposed from 1935 to 2008. The tuning rules are carefully categorized and application information about each rule is given. This book discusses controller architecture and process modeling issues, as well as the performance and robustness of loops compensated with PI or PID controllers. This unique publication brings together in an easy-to-use format material previously published in a large number of papers and books. This wholly revised third edition extends the presentation of PI and PID controller tuning rules, for single variable processes with time delays, to include additional rules compiled since the second edition was published in 2006. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book, lousy production values
As a fan of Robert Van Gulik, I've made an effort to collect any of his available works, and this particular one has been something of a Holy Grail for me, as every time I've tried to order it before, it was marked as 'unavailable'.So now my search is over, and much like Launcelot, the apparent message is 'look, but don't touch'.

The research is exhaustive, the translations both rather muddy and elegantly concise, the explanations add a great deal of value to Dr. Van Gulik's work.

Now the bad part.I've never seen such a shabby excuse for a book. The cover appears to be red construction paper, glued sketchily at the spine, and I had no sooner opened it than the pages began to fall out.I'm happy to have finally obtained this interesting historical perspective on the subject, but next time, guys, have a little more respect for the author and his labors.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for van Gulik and/or Judge Dee fans
T'ang-Yin-Pi-Shih is a listing of actual cases and decisions heard and made by Chinese imperial magistrates.Robert Hans van Gulik, in his prefaces and colophons to his best-known works, the 16 books of stories about Magistrate Dee Jen-Djieh, noted that he drew upon these case histories as sources for his novels and short stories. As such, they make entertaining reading for those familiar with those works.

The cases are presented in pairs (hence the term "Parallel Cases"), in which each half of the pair bears a common idea, though this is not always obvious. The other part of the title comes from the fact that scholars of law developed a tradition of holding discussions and study groups in groves of fruit trees. Thus, referring to something as "under the pear-tree" became a metaphor for a legal matter.

Readers will find that the Imperial Chinese had a keen sense of law and justice, and the methods used bear striking resemblances to modern forensics - even to the use of bullet comparisons. One thing that is curious, though, is the fact that while thumbprints on documents (including confessions) were used as an identifying mark, the Chinese never developed the use of fingerprints at crime scenes.

The book contains 72 pairs of cases dating from 300 BCE to 1100 CE, with extensive footnotes, including commentary from imperial scholars who added their notes after its initial publication in 1211 CE.Where there is a question about the accuracy of his translation, van Gulik cites the original Chinese text, but a knowledge of the language is not necessary. ... Product Description
This is a clever, beautiful book. The authors trace the thread of $\pi$ through the long history of mathematics. In so doing, they touch upon many major subjects in mathematics: geometry (of course), number theory, Galois theory, probability, transcendental numbers, analysis, and, as their crown jewel, the theory of elliptic functions, which connects many of the other subjects. By this device, the authors provide a tour through mathematics, one that mathematicians of all levels, amateur or professional, may appreciate. In many cases, the tour visits well-known topics from particular special interest groups. Remarkably, $\pi$ is often found at the places of deepest beauty. The volume includes many exercises with detailed solutions. Anyone from undergraduate mathematics majors through university professors will find many things to enjoy in this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this series!
If you like Janet Evanovich's series featuring Stephanie Plum, you will love this series featuring Grace. You will laugh til you cry at some of the scenes and some of the things she says. I just love it when she calls someone a "bugger". The books are like a cozy mystery so if you are into those, you should like these also. A great female sleuth series!

5-0 out of 5 stars British PI Grace Smith
Not sure how I had previously missed this novel. It is about British PI Grace Smith, who has an office arrangement upstairs in a PI firm, and who lives as one of the squatters in a building that has an unknown owner. She has an automobile that she can't take out on the highway, so relies on a bicycle, borrowed vehicles, and bumming rides. She is tightfisted with money.

The novel has a mixed group of characters.Throw together a cast that includes an older woman with a boytoy, a cross-dressing actor, a would be movie producer, an old guy with a shotgun playing with a half deck, various love smitten people, and assorted other players and spear characters, and you get a story that goes in some iteresting directions. There is a wrap-up at the end that has a few twists, and some advice about the necessity of sometimes needing to let people go, no matter how much you may think you love them.

Parts of the novel are funny.Grace is not exactly Kinsey Millhone, and not exactly Stephanie Plum. The novel is not a quick read, but definitely worth reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read, but the ending disappointed me
I previously read Liz Evans' Sick as a Parrot and thought it was one of the best books I've read recently, so I came to this one with high expectations.

I enjoyed reading the book, but I think perhaps there were too many plots going on, and somehow, in the end, there wasn't that feeling of satisfaction that all of it made sense and came together. In fact, by the end, I was feeling confused -- so many subplots to keep track of.

The main plot (is there really a main plot in this book?) involves a wealthy woman who hires private investigator Grace Smith for a job (Grace is kind of a British blend of Kinsey Milhone and Stephanie Plum -- humor and romance, but plotting is much stronger in Evans than Evanovich, and Grace is kind of an "on her own in the world" sort of detective character, like Milhone). The assignment is to identify three people the woman has secretly photographed coming out of a shop in a nearby village (Grace lives in an English seaside town). The woman says that she intends to leave her fortune to these strangers rather than to her ne'er do well son, because she thinks he may be trying to kill her for her money.

It immediately becomes clear that Grace has stumbled on a hornet's nest -- she has upset someone, but about what? Each of the three people in the photographs has a story (subplot) involving their life, including a farmer who is caring for his demented father (who ties Grace up at shotgun point), a couple who have started an American Indian study center, a politician, a transvestite, etc.Perhaps there are TOO many characters, although they're all interesting.

I will continue to read more in this series and can recommend this book -- but it does require some concentration, so this is not a good book to read in short spurts or a distracting setting. If you like more literate mysteries, this will probably appeal, and there are some great humorous lines and episodes.

4-0 out of 5 stars British myster with strong female lead character...
Don't mess... is a fast paced novel with a wealth of interesting characters. At times the plot stretches credibility, but still in an enjoyable fashion. The author does a nice job of introducing enough characters to keep this relatively lengthy novel interesting (400+ pages), and does so in a way that it is still easy for the reader track.

The novel is modern-British in tone and nature, but still very accessible.Although not great literature, the book holds your attention throughout. ... Read more

Winner, 2010 NZSA Jessie Mackay Award for Best First Book of Poetry

The judging panel found Marsh’s collection exhilarating: "The poems are sensuous but strong, using lush imagery and clear rhythms and repetitions to power them forward."

Touching on the poet’s community, ancestry, influences, and history, this debut collection of poetry lives up to the meaning behind the artist’s name—“writer of tales.” The featured verse is sensuous but strong, using lush imagery, clear rhythms, and repetitions to power it forward. With a unique Pacific lyricism, this compendium is structured in three sections that showcase different strengths, from personal poems and political and historical verse to those already destined to become classics. Fighting against historical injustices and exploring the ideas of identity and story—especially those associated with the afakasi or half-caste experience in a postcolonial world—this compilation will gratify fans of poetry everywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars A mind bending thriller
Robert Walker takes one on an amazing journey through the tortured souls of his characters Marcus Rydell and Kat Holley. Marcus Rydell an ex-policeman who lost his sense of purpose when Iden Cantu an ex-marine went on a killing spree. Only Cantu's demented mind saved Rydell from the same fate as those of his fellow officers including Kat Holley's husband. Cantu had decided that he would have more fun destroying Rydell and all that Rydell loved before killing him.
Leaving Kat notes threatening all manner of horrible torture before killing her led her to enlist the only person she believed would have as much at stake in catching Cantu, Marcus Rydell.
We are led through the maze of revenge, hatred, and murder in this remarkable thriller.

The author

5-0 out of 5 stars exhilarating cat and mouse thriller
The bloodbath that left his partner Stan Miersky and two uniform cops dead forced Marcus Rydell from the Atlanta police department in disgrace as he survived the massacre by fainting; his wife took their two kids to Ohio.He tried for the last four years to make it as a private investigator, but failed miserably as his heart was never in taking photos of cheating spouses. He now sits in his apartment with a gun contemplating suicide when he hears a noise upstairs that awakens his dormant detective genes. He races upstairs to find a little girl has killed an apparent pervert.Another neighbor Dr. Kat Holley arrives to help the child and invites Marcus to meet her for a drink.

He comes to the bar and she points a gun at him accusing him of killing her husband, APD cop Rydell four years ago in the incident that ended so tragically. She shows him letters from the cop killer hunter Iden Cantu, still eluding the law, who threatens to add her to his count. They agree to team up to capture and she to butcher the psychopath. However, he leaves them a holiday calling card when he tortures and kills the fiancé of the other dead cop from four years ago.Kat and Marcus know he is coming for them and the family members of his partner.

This is an exhilarating cat and mouse thriller that takes too long for the anticipated confrontation to occur; when it does it is first rate.Kat and Marcus are a fascinating couple as neither has moved passed the massacre and both want Iden dead. When their dysfunctional relationship changes from killing Iden to love, some of the steam is lost with the expected switch.Still they make the tale as they plan to hunt the predator; not understanding how clever and diabolical their enemy is though revenge proves extremely pointed.

Product Description
Distributed systems are fast becoming the norm in computer science. Formal mathematical models and theories of distributed behavior are needed in order to understand them. This book proposes a distributed pi-calculus called Dpi, for describing the behavior of mobile agents in a distributed world. It is based on an existing formal language, the pi-calculus, to which it adds a network layer and a primitive migration construct. A mathematical theory of the behavior of these distributed systems is developed, in which the presence of types plays a major role. It is also shown how in principle this theory can be used to develop verification techniques for guaranteeing the behavior of distributed agents. The text is accessible to computer scientists with a minimal background in discrete mathematics. It contains an elementary account of the pi-calculus, and the associated theory of bisimulations. It also develops the type theory required by Dpi from first principles. ... Read more
