4-0 out of 5 stars Practical and excellent excel programs
I think what makes this book excellent for the engineer in the field, is the fact that you have the equations, derivations and methods explained in a very friendly manner, and the examples are included in the excel programs which make it easy to follow it and change the data to adapt the problems to different situations. I totally recommend the book. One recommendation would be to include more artificial lift methods in a new edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review
You can follow the book through the CD which helps a lot in many cases, but it would be more interesting to have all the memory space of the CD dedicated to examples. The graphs are excelent and the worked examples really helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars An old fashion approach to reservoir engineering
This is one of the traditional textbooks of reservoir engineering that has survived the pass of time because of its undoubtful quality. The book has a considerable number of solved and proposed exercises and the subjects are presented in a manner very easy to understand. It was originally written at the time in which material balance calculations were the basic algoritm used by reservoir engineers to characterize hidrocarbon reservoirs. As such, this book is organized in terms of the material balance equation: it goes from material balance applied to dry gas, the next chapter is about material balance applied to gas-condensate, then undersaturated and so on, until all diferent fluids are covered. A variety of procedures to do the material balance calculations are presented, many of them of little or no usefulness today and definitely not even mentioned in modern reservoir engineering courses. Important topics such as PVT are dispersed in all the chapters. Other such as pressure testing and inmiscible displacement are covered without adequate depth. Numerical simulation is not even an entry in the subject index. In summary, if your interest is to read about material balance methods in reservoir engineering, this is the book to pick. If you are seeking a general view of the subject then there are better options.

5-0 out of 5 stars Standard Handbook of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, Second Edition
I am really satisfied about the "Standard Handbook of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, Second Edition".
The book covers basically all the aspects of the Drilling and Petroleum Industry. It is a good reference and an important tool for the people in the oil & Gas fields.

However I am not satisfied about the service after sale of "Amazone.com". I requested the purchase of the online upgrade of this book so I can use it whenever I need it without transporting as it is big and heavy. But up to now I haven't got any positive feedback from "Tyrone T". I think this will discourage me from purchasing more books from "Amazone.com" .
I am still interested on the online upgrade. I am looking forward to hearing from "Amazone.com" with a positive action.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative
I purchase this book a few weeks ago. I haven't been able to read the whole thing because it is very long but it is detailed. I'm in the oil and gas industry so I was looking for something technical. My goal was to find something with calculations and explanations for the reasoning behind use of various tools and methods. This book seems to achieve this. For example, there is a section explaining bits and the ideal environments. It describes the ideal RPM and WOB for a PDC bit of certain parameters. Explains how to identify them with their IADC codes and what the codes mean. Usually, this information would be provided to a drilling engineer by a bit supplier when designing a well plan. This information would help you communicate with the supplier more effectively. The book reads like a dictionary. I think it will make a good reference tool for people working in the industry.

I would not recommend this book for beginners or people wanting a nontechnical guide. If you didn't understand anything I just said above then don't buy this book. The best introductory book I have read is by Norman J. Hyne called Nontechnical Guide to Petroleum Geology, Exploration, Drilling and Production (2nd Edition). I think he is a professor at a university in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It covers a ton of information from start to finish and he keeps things very basic. It is much easier read.

There are some minor grammar and spelling mistakes in the book I purchased. The last 20 pages of the index were not bound to the book but I couldn't be bothered to return it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, could be better
The book was very good for the PE test.It would be much better if it had a better index. Some things are hard to find.It is basically a general guide to Petroleum engineering. It is not an end all referance, but is ultimately a great resource.

3-0 out of 5 stars Product is fine but not delivered at the time promised
I got this book for my friend in India and it is a very good book. I paid around $50 in shipping, because I wanted it to be shipped sooner. They promised me that the book will reach to destination in 2-3 days (They know it is an international shipping address, they charged extra for this), but the product took a lot more time (nearly 15days) to be delivered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference
This handbook is an excellent reference for research and teaching from basic to advanced subjects in advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in Petroleum Engineering. I recommend this book to anyone involved in these matters. Giorgio E. O. Giacaglia, Ph.D., Yale `65. ... Read more

It's a okay book. i completed a course in refining and had this book. If you don't understand how different units work or new to the business this book would be a good place to start. easy explanation of process and useful diagrams.

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect
I have a BA degree in International Studies and an MBA in Finance. I have been in market and competitor analysis with energy consulting firms and operating companies for 28 years.

I have relied on this book every step of the way.

Do not expect to get a detailed understanding of how refining works. If that is what you are seerking, you're not in the right place (hint: read the title!). What this spelndid little book does is give a business person enough background to understand the various processes, both individually and as part of the flow from crude oil to, for example gasoline. How good is this book? Well, it has been in continuous publication for some 20 years.

Product Description
This revised edition of the bestselling Practice of Reservoir Engineering has been written for those in the oil industry requiring a working knowledge of how the complex subject of hydrocarbon reservoir engineering can be applied in the field in a practical manner.Containing additions and corrections to the first edition, the book is a simple statement of how to do the job and is particularly suitable for reservoir/production engineers as well as those associated with hydrocarbon recovery.

This practical book approaches the basic limitations of reservoir engineering with the basic tenet of science: Occam's Razor, which applies to reservoir engineering to a greater extent than for most physical sciences - if there are two ways to account for a physical phenomenon, it is the simpler that is the more useful. Therefore, simplicity is the theme of this volume.

Reservoir and production engineers, geoscientists, petrophysicists, and those involved in the management of oil and gas fields will want this edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely the best
Dake really were in his best moment to known something and wrote down, here you can find out the state of the art, even now at 2007 of how to do the things in reservoir engineering, planning, following, just read it, you do not loose nothing, always win.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reservoir Engineering
This is a book which teaches an Engineer how to practice reservoir engineering in the oil and gas field.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Workable Handbook
Most books on Reservoir Engineering are very university-Academic oriented and its up to us field engineers to decide wether such theories are workable or not in actual practice.
The Practice is a book that might be ranked as a handbook for applicable usage, especially offshore where economics dictates most decision making.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Goldmine of a Book
One of the few true "must read" books in the field.

Mr. Dake's book is unique -- reading it is like working side-by-side with an exceptionally intelligent, erudite, experienced engineer.Despite the author's wry conversational style, this is not a light volume that can be absorbed by speed-reading.The author is sharing decades worth of real-world experience, and it merits close study.

For example, after all the thick volumes that have been written on oil well testing, who would expect that there could be anything left to say?Yet Dake's approach to well testing is eye-opening, and will certainly influence this engineer's approach to designing & interpreting well tests.

Experienced engineers may find themselves wanting to argue with some of the author's opinions & recommendations, but they will conclude that the time they invested in studying this book was well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars A grand legacy
This book is all that one would expect from Dake, and more. The long awaited update bridges the gaps left as technology has moved on since the original publication. Unfortunately Laurie is no longer with us and this publication is one of many fitting and lasting legacies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
This is a very good reference to have at hand.I am a petrophysicist and reading this book has allowed me to do a number of my computation much more accurately.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for fundamental petroleum calculations
I am using the second edition to help with my understanding of viscosity, permeability, compressibility, PV diagrams and other calculations.

The book is titled "An introduction".However, the detail in the book is at an intermediate level. You need to have at least some basic scientific and mathematical knowledge to make the best of this book.As an example, it is clearly a level above Dr Hyne's Nontechnical Guide to Petroleum Geology.

The book does not go into great background detail and is more focused on calculations and examples of how they are derived and applied. If this is what you want this book for (as it was for me), it does a great job.

It has an exemplary index that is very useful in finding exactly what you are looking for.

1-0 out of 5 stars It is too slow
After a month, I have not received the book yet, I need to borrow my friend's book for school. If I know it is this slow, I will buy a used book from the bookstore.

5-0 out of 5 stars Petroleum Production System
I find that the book of Petroleum Production System by Michael Economides is very straight forward and easy to understand. It can be a reference book of petroleum/production engineering for practical engineers and petroleum engineering students.

Henricus Herwin - Sr Reservoir Engineer, TOTAL

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelente learning tool for Petroleum Production Systems
It is an excellent book to understand in detail the petroleum production systems for a person who has some background in the area. It is also helpful as a reference book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
The book is unpractical for the working engineer and the mathematics is simplified calculus which is not understandable to the average practicing engineer, but seems to be in favor of academic types. This is not a book for someone who wants to learn why production equipment works. The chapter on multiphase flow is its only saving grace, but any cheap paper on the subject will say as much. I would recomened the OGCI books on Production Technology. Way cheaper...way better...

4-0 out of 5 stars Usefull Reference Book for Petroleum Engineers

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Petroleum Engineering Handbook
The Petroleum Engineering Handbook is an excellent general introduction to the engineering associated with oil and gas exploration and development, gathering together in one place most of the basic engineering issues, challenges and resolutions.

4-0 out of 5 stars yes, it is big...but it fills the need as well.
without opening it, you would think that the secrets of the world were contained therein. as a reference tool, it is invaluable - it is comprehensive. everything from oil cracking to storage to...whatever. its in there!

i borrowed my professor's copy for a couple of weeks and everytime i had to lug the thing around (in my backpack), i felt i'd tip over by its weight. its strictly a DESK reference book.

for the curious: the book is a well written and easily understandable book with plenty of value to the petro-engineer or theresuch.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a big book
It looks big from a distance but when you get close you can really get into the 4 dimensional size of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boy is it THICK!!
I found this book to be VERY thick. It's thickness increased the further one got into it. I expected a less thick book but was astonished at it's actual thickness. ... Read more
