4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and comprehensive look at unexplained events
The authors of this book have done a great job of gathering a comprehensive collection of unexplained events, folklore, and myths.Topics covered include the world famous Loch Ness monster, the variousversions of Bigfoot, as well as lesser known oddities - such as wingedcats. There is a great section devoted to poltergeists and haunted houses- they even cover the new public focus of crop circles.I alsoparticularly enjoyed the section at the end covering hoaxes. It is a greatbook and easy read, full of wonderful pictures.A must have for anyone whoquestions the "official explanation" and wonders what really isout there. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A quick list
If you are enthusiast of parapsychology, the paranormal, and the occult, many of the names in this book will be familiar to you.The ideas Chambers presents, like psychometry, bilocation, and spontaneous human combustion, will also be familiar.

The book is divided into different areas of the paranormal, and in each area, Chambers presents us with a figure of history who best exemplifies this area. For instance, when talking of vampirism, he tells us of Arnold Paole, and when talking of cryptozoology, he tells us of Frank Hansen and the Minnesota Iceman. In each area, a brief explanation of the phenomenon leads us into the presentation of each character.

With each character, we are not given a lot of information.Basically, he tells us the story and then explains his thoughts and the thoughts of subsequent studies into the phenomenon. The only problem is that some new characters are mentioned here, but never explained. For instance, Uri Geller is mentioned a couple of times, but the reader is assumed to be already familiar with Uri.

This does not mean the book is without merit.Chambers raises some very good points in the study of the paranormal. The study is filled with extremists on both sides and these extremists prevent serious study from advancing. For instance, if one fraud is found in levitation, the assumption becomes all levitation is fraudulent.Likewise, if levitation is proved false in one instance, true believers claim that there is a conspiracy to keep levitation a secret from the people.Chambers points out several cases where we should revisit the studies.

Although there are more books that go into more detail, I would recommend this book as a beginning study of the paranormal. The bibliography in the back provides further reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning aboutparnormal people.THis book contains many topics on several people.Ittells about Harry Houdini, Aleister Crowley and many others.I recommendto anyone intrested in sprits and paranormality.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Rational and Entertaining Look at the Paranormal
Considering the large volume of material available on the paranormal, I found this book somewhat refreshing. Rather being simply another list of the same old paranormal stories, this author has tried to clear away some of the myth and rumour that has grown up around the paranormal and has had some success. Using good old fashioned research, he has managed to find new and unusual stories about strange happenings and has put a sparkle on some familiar stories which have clearly gathered a good deal of untruth about them over the years. I would recommend this book to anybody who has an interest in understanding the paranormal, rather than those who fancy Agent Scully! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars interesting comparisons, somewhat dry
An exposition of "the varieties of skeptical experience" as seen from the perspectives of skeptics, parapsychologists, and New Agers. The author presents an analysis of "the three cultures" with reference to the emergent "paraculture" as illustrated in the portrayals of the three types in current literature and especially in cinematic efforts to deal with the darker side of the paranormal, as in such movies as "Poltergeist", "Exorcist", etc. wherein the skeptic is usually the first to be killed off, resulting in some resolution between newage credulity and parapsychological wisdom. While the author's sentiments seem to lie with the parapsychological view, he does make a credible presentation of similar methodologies that are used by each camp to debunk/discredit the other, whether it be the "antagonistic" approaches of CSICOP or the "kinder gentler" methods of the parapsychologists. "... I see the New Age movement not as a new irrationalism but instead as a new expression of skepticism within a framework of religious or spiritual assumptions: a spiritual self-help movement or even a kind of religioscientific consumerism." ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Longwinded
I respect Loyd Auerbach immensely, but the chapters in this book are so longwinded when it comes to psi abilities that it leaves non-psychic investigators out of the loop. I understand that Mr. Auerbach is a mentalist but when writing a book with the subcaption: How to Investigate the paranormal, you'd expect it to be for people of non-psychic ability as well.
Overall the book is informative if you have "medium" abilities but does little for the regular investigative scientist.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Better Books on This Subject
Having just joined an established paranormal research group, I wanted to read some books on the actual process of investigations, so I would have a better idea of what to do while out on the field. I've spent much of my life studying paranormal phenomena, but up until now, have not been able to get hands on, so to speak.

This book is exactly what I was looking for, as it covers everything from how to use the equipment to conducting interviews with potential clients. It is very detailed and informative for anyone who takes this subject as seriously as I do, and while some of the reading is rather dry, or even slow paced; the fact is, you can immediately put this stuff into practice when going out on an investigation, hence my reasoning for the five star rating.

Any amateur can take a camcorder and a voice recorder and claim to be a ghost hunter; but if you want to make this a serious endeavour by starting your own group, or joining an existing one, you owe it to yourself to read this book first. You'll learn quite a bit from 'professor paranormal'.

2-0 out of 5 stars Basic & Typo Central...
I was hoping to get much more from this book based on the author's reputation, but the material is basic at best. It's more of a Ghost Hunting 101 pre-course. What was extremely irritating about this book was the number of typos. It seemed almost every page contained a typo that any fifth grader could have picked up on. The horrible editing on this book was a real distraction.

3-0 out of 5 stars I've read better...
This book was pretty boring to me and very difficult to stay interested in. I didn't really get much out of it that I haven't found in other books that are more interesting and exciting to read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Depressingly workmanlike effort
This book is a total cash-in for Auerbach. His investigations are completely non-critical, the tips he shares are common-sense at best, and a cloying sense of self-importance permeates the entire book. The goofy "Halloween at the local elementary school" illustrations give the general public one more reason to look at paranormal investigators as New-Agey Shaggy and Scooby wannabe's.Thanks Loyd. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed reading this book!
I enjoyed reading this book!I have been to several of Ron and Maureen's lectures so I have heard snippets of some of the stories in this book. This book brought it all together for me as a great tale of their adventures. And being a New Englander, I am familiar with many of the areas where their investigations took place.

If you know Maureen and Ron at all, they are the same way in person as they are in the book.Always getting on each other's nerves, but always have each other's back. It's what makes them so entertaining. This is a book you have to read a second time, to see what really makes this duo work so well together.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ok for a fast read, but I just don't buy into this one
I was very disappointed in this book.True, the book is billed as a book on the investigations into various hauntings - and it IS precisely that, in a nutshell. The stories are quick - and cover highlights from the investigations and details on blessing equipment with Holy Water. The book doesn't cover background details on the hauntings, but in the authors' defense - I'm sure most mediums would prefer NOT to know backgrounds of the case before they investigate. The stories are all pretty similar, they go in, feel a presence, dab everything with Holy Water, and leave. They don't really tell you anything.

What really ruined the book & credibility for me was the chapter on the Lizzie Borden House.I just can't buy into the authors' claims about this one.Considering the fact that the Lizzie Borden House is in Massachusetts where Maureen is from - it was stated in the book that no one knew"details" of the murders, such as the name "Bridget Sullivan" (The Borden's maid), the room locations where the murders happened, etc.Give me a break. The authors Ron & Maureen are from the New England Ghost Project and I am certain that they, like everyone in this area, know these sorts of facts about this case.In the Borden case, one of the investigators (a guest from the UK) suddenly has the name "Bridget Sulliban" come to mind and - shockers - they stumble across some pictures just laying on the floor in a room and one has the name "Bridget Sullivan" on it.Granted, this investigator was from the UK -but when he announces the name, no one recognizes it. I find it HIGHLY unlikely that neither Ron (as founder of the group) nor Maureen(a Massachusetts native) had never heard this name before.Additionally, there are many claims by the investigative team of "feelings" in the rooms where the murders occurred, despite the authors' claims of not knowing the murder locations within the house.

Also, despite the authors' mentioning of some really great pictures they had taken at various cases, there are only a few pictures in the book that are actually paranormal.

Don't waste your money on this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Form your own opinion
There are mixed reviews on this book. The negative reviews are challenged by those who defend the authors in a manner that we really don't know them or understand their relationship dynamics.

First off I will say that the book is worth reading.I like the font changes depending upon which investigator is telling the story. The locales and types of hauntings are provocative and interesting. Both authors appear to be legitimate and to know what they are doing.

Having said that, the fact is that they do seem combative and ornery much of the time. Both come off as rather smart-alecky and Maureen leaves the impression with me that she gets coerced into going to a lot of the investigations and really would rather not be there. My biggest problem is that quite a few of the stories lack resolution and seem incomplete as to what was done to resolve the haunting and make it desist or go away or at least tell us that they were not there for resolution, but only to gather evidence.

Of course as previous commentators have pointed out, I don't know the authors and don't know their relationship dynamics, but then again, it is their job to help me understand.I only have what they write to make me understand, and much of what I got from the book to help me was wise cracking, complaining, etc. so I completely understand negative reviews to that effect.

I think this team has the experience and skill to make a much better second book if they take these criticisms into consideration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative on paranormal investigations
I bought this book last week because I listen to the Ghost Chronicles podcast. The book is very well written and is very entertaining to read.
The cases that Maureen Wood and Ron Kolek wrote about are very spooky to read about. That said I would highly recommend that people buy this
book because it is a really good book to read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ron's Big Exploit
This book is a great disappointment and an extremely amateuristic attempt at scientific explanation and observation. I felt like I was witnessing the local neighborhood bully taking "Our Gang" on ghost hunts at the dilapidated house at the edge of town.
Maureen;a trance medium, seems to defiantly have a gift but needs to work on her confidence. She appears to be able to contact/channel but then offers no attempt at resolution.
`Van Helsing' (Ron; founder and lead investigator of the New England Ghost Project) on the other hand comes off as cavalier and extremely careless of people and situations. Self absorbed to the point of neglecting safety issues and scientific procedure. Ron comes off as a six year old in a candy store; `it's all about me, stand back, I'm bumbling through!'
For new and real students of the paranormal there are far better books and authors available.

"A collection of chilling stories...eerily believable and truly spooky...very strongly recommended..."--Midwest Book Review

Most people think of ghosts as rare, elusive creatures that are more or less inaccessible to the average Joe. Sure, we read about them, watch TV shows about them and tell stories about them, but we'll probably never run into one--right? Don't be so sure. Even if you've never personally encountered a ghost, chances are you know someone who has.

The Ghost Next Door takes a revealing look into the lives of average, everyday people from across the country who have had experiences in the realm of the unexplained. Whether you're a true believer in ghosts or a hard-nosed skeptic, you're sure to get a chill or two when you read about the woman who was visited by her grandfather...on the night of his funeral! Or the man who was forced to move by a troublesome spirit...only to find it had followed him!

As you make your way through these and other genuinely spooky stories, you'll probably find that ghostly encounters are a lot more common than you had imagined. Could there be a "haunted house" in your town? Perhaps on your very street? Maybe even right next door? ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Just OK...
After reading the reviews on this book I could not wait to have it and start reading it. Well, when I started reading it I found that to me it just didn't have the "spell" that it apparently had on other people... hence, I didn't get scared as I thought I would be, not even close. Although, don't get me wrong, it's an OK book, at least an entertaining reading... but that's all, nothing Earth shattering if you ask me...

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Read!
I really enjoyed reading this book.It was very well written.I couldn't put it down.I wanted to keep reading about all these paranormal experiences people had related to the writer. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in reading about paranormal experiences.

1-0 out of 5 stars HUGE disappointment! Not scary!
I bought this book after reading all of the excellent reviews, and after the first few pages I was disgusted.I said to my husband that although I kept reading, it was only because I was hoping it would get better, not because it was a great book.It did NOT get better, and I wish I could get a refund.
It seemed to me like the author was just some guy who spoke with his sister, friends and coworkers about their paranormal experiences and then said, "Hey!I could make a buck with this info!"
The stories are extremely short and lack development which in turn has a negative effect on their success. Some stories are only 2 pages long! They aren't scary at all, and most of them I found plain stupid - like a bad horror movie. There are so many holes, and other possible explanations for some of the actions, and the people are all too eager to embrace their experience as paranormal. Each story is told in an interview format... it's directly from the mouths of those who had the encounter. This is usually an advantage, but in this case it isn't.
What makes the book even worse are the comments from the author which lead into and out of each story. The only way I could describe these comments is cheesy. It's like the author is trying too hard to heighten the eeriness of the story - an eeriness that isn't even there to start with!
I love reading true stories about the paranormal, and I love the TV shows and movies. This book was a HUGE disappointment for a self-proclaimed ghost lover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best paranormal book I've ever read. Honest.
While scanning my local bookstore in the parapsychology section, I came across this particular book by a Canadian author that I'd never heard of. After a brief glance, always on the hunt for new spooky tomes, I decided that it looked interesting enough to purchase on speculation. 3 days later, I put it down. This is easily the most interesting, enthralling, fascinating piece of paranormal investigative study that I've read in a long, long time. Palmisano has a descriptive, fluid writing style; equal parts wonder, weary experience & healthy skepticism. This book, while it makes no bones about it's belief in the paranormal, approaches it from a smart scientific angle that's very refreshing in this field. While many have tried this approach, Palmisano makes it pay off in spades, simply because he doesn't just regurgitate the same old scientific facts. He breaks them down, reconstructs them in an interesting original way, and applies them to years of firsthand experience. Most importantly, however, he doesn't forget the real reason we read this stuff; in short, he doesn't skimp on the 'creep' factor. This is one of the eeriest, shiver-inducing books I've read in years.
It's divided up into a number of sections: Case Histories, Investigations; and Tips On Ghost Hunting for amateurs; no, this isn't as percocious as it sounds - matter of fact, none of this is. There isn't a hint of pretention or new-age mysticism here, just an experienced, entertaining investigator offering his years of expertise, knowledge and chill-inducing memories, all arranged and served to fascinate. I've read a lot of these type books, but this was something new entirely. If you're a fan of paranormal investigative study, look no further.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mysteries Magazine review
With over 25 years' experience in paranormal investigations throughout Ontario, Canada, Richard Palmisano has many a spooky story to tell. In Journeys into the Unknown, he shares a few with us.

Ontario has many picturesque old buildings, and just as many ghosts. An 1840s house in Oakville harbors a ghostly woman who occasionally scares the daylights out of touring schoolchildren! Still another house, built in 1898 in Toronto's Bloor-Dufferin neighborhood, comes with a whole host of spiritual occupants, including something "black, crouching, not human, not animal ... watching."

But not all haunted houses are old, as a couple named Ed and June discovered. Soon after moving into a detached late-1960s bungalow, they were tormented by unexplained knockings, disappearing objects and, ultimately, a menacing shadowy black figure who drove them out of their home.

Rather than driving out spirits, Palmisano seeks wherever possible to create peace between a home's corporeal and noncorporeal residents. For instance, he was able to appease a troubled ghost by putting a doormat outside her house and making sure that nobody smoked in her former bedroom, for she disliked the smell of tobacco in death as much as in life. In other cases, he and his team of researchers discovered that destructive ghosts were kept in check by benevolent "protector" spirits.

Aspiring researchers will find the final section of Palmisano's book, particularly interesting. In it, he suggests that spirits live in a "memory bubble" that causes them to re-enact events from their previous lives, and that they use emotional energy combined with water and static electricity to power manifestation. And the final few pages, which provide protocols for examinations of haunted areas and interviews with witnesses, are invaluable for beginning and even advanced scholars of the paranormal.

Although Palmisano's focus is on hauntings in Canada, Journeys into the Unknown will be useful to scholars of the paranormal. Not only does it offer theories and techniques that are globally usable; it also provides detailed anecdotes of ghostly occurrences in an area which many researchers may have overlooked.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but kinda wears thin
This book covers alot of interesting paranormal subjects. But whenever a book tries to delve into so many areas each area is thin in content. Which can be dissappointing when u really want to read more about a certain subject. There a few very interesting theories in this book such as the "stone tape" theory etc.. so basically a good bookoverall.

Product Description
Superbly readable Paranormal Ireland recreates from interviews and notes the appearance of big cats in Tipperary, sightings of UFOs over Roscommon, the harrowing experiences of a family in Galway at the hands of a poltergeist, amongst other mysterious tales. DeFaoite has produced a book with all the feeling and depth of fiction but more shocking because it's true. Media Coverage The second edition of Paranormal Ireland was critically acclaimed and once again received wide-spread coverage in the press. The Irish Daily Star on Sunday ran a double page spread on the ghostly encounters while the Sunday World printed extracts from the book. deFaoite was interviewed on 98FM, Ireland AM, Beat 102-103FM, KLR radio and 96FM to name a few. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Paranormal Ireland
A very interesting read for anyone with a fascination with ghosts, fairies, banshees, or UFO's.It includes 21 short stories consisting of paranormal activity. Each intriguing tale was more exciting than the last.

I bought the book before visiting the beautiful country, but only got to the second story. After returning home I read the third story, "Heart of Darkness," which tells the tale of one of the most haunted castles in Ireland.I had just visited the very same castle in Ireland.

Charleville Castle sits at the end of a mile long walk through an enchanting forest. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable of the castle since he had lived there himself about seventeen or eighteen years. He told us of the great tragedy of little Harriet Hugh Edel, who fell to her death at the end of the stairwell on the second floor. The castle is said to be haunted by the little girl."Heart of Darkness" tells the story of such hauntings experienced first hand by the castle's current owner Bridget Vance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Spirit Paths and Mysteries of the Landcape
Paul Devereux has been a leading researcher of earth mysteries and sacred landscapes for decades, and anything he writes on these subjects are required reading for those interested in the mysteries of the landscape in human perception. Following is an overview of this book.

Part 1, "Shamanism and Ancient Mysteries of the New World" discusses rock art and linear rock arrangements in the desert southwest of the U.S.; chapters in part one include "Signs of the Spirits" and "Patterns of Power."

Part 2, "Shades of Shamanism in the Old World" compares the shamanic landscapes of Part 1 with the author's search for similar landscape features in Europe such as leylines. However he finds that Europe focused on "pathways of the dead" (corpse ways, doodweg) and their association with fairies, witchcraft and night battles, the Wild Hunt, and night creatures, though there are indications of an ancient thread connecting Europe's funerary landscapes with Central Asian shamanism. Chapters in part two include "Death Roads and Funeral Paths" and "The Secret Life of Old Europe."

Part 3, "The Invisible Country" looks at the numinous landscape of Europe through anthropology, archaeology, and folklore. Chapters in part three include "Last Voyage to Avalon," "Fairies, Witches and Werewolves", and "The Mysterious Ways of the Gods." Some of the high points for me in this part was how people's spirits become part of the land after death, and how unwanted "spirit traffic" can be interrupted through devices like "witch traps" and labyrinths, or shifted as "church lines".

Part 4, "The Land is Still Haunted" relates what has been learned from earlier times to contemporary sightings of the uncanny along roads and paths, with examples mostly from Britain, such as spectral vehicles, phantom hitchhikers, black dogs, earth lights or mystery lights, time-slips, white lady apparitions, and hooded "monk" apparitions. Chapters in part four include "Road Hauntings," "Non-Human Shades of the Land," and "White Lady and Black Monk."

Part 5, "Seeking Solutions" returns to Native American rock art sites; as he says earlier in the book, "I find that the traditional explanations for ghosts as offered by both believers and sceptics to be inadequate and follow lines of thought that lead to the frontiers of recent research and thinking about the mind and its relationship to physical reality" (p. 4).The last chapters are "Between a Rock and a Hard Place" and "The Magic Theater" covering such topics as "Hallucination Triggers," "Zones of Disturbance," "All is Illusion," and speculations on the mind's connection to time-space reality.

For those interested in the mysteries and interactions of the human mind, and the spirit (or spirits) of place, especially in connection to linear movements of spirits and features on the land, this is a must-read. ... Read more

Product Description
The paranormal concerns happenings and experiences which defy rational or scientific explanation. Most people believe that they occur, but scientists tend to dismiss them as superstition, and the churches seem frightened of them. Experienced author, Bishop Hugh Montefiore, makes here a serious study of this fascinating subject. Never averse to controversy, he is not afraid to take on Professor Richard Dawkins, the well-known populariser of the natural sciences, who dismisses the paranormal out of hand. Here the subject is dealt with in a balanced and reasonable fashion. He cites many cases, giving reasons for and against accepting them as paranormal. Suggesting criteria by which to judge them, he leaves readers to make up their own minds, until the last chapter, where he gives his own conclusions. He ranges more widely than previous books on the subject by including the paranormal in religion. In the first part, he examines alleged cases of telepathy, precognition, automatic writing, mediums, ghosts, poltergeists and hauntings, and even astrology. In the second part, he considers the paranormal in religion, including near death experiences, exorcism and reincarnation. In the third part, he examines specifically Christian experiences, including visions and the extraordinary experiences of mystics. He even suggests that the paranormal is to be found in the scriptures. This remarkable book, which includes interviews with those who have experienced the paranormal, should prove to be irresistible reading. ... Read more

Product Description
This is a chilling collection of tales from the residents of Nottinghamshire. Collated and discussed by psychic Netty, this title may shed some light on the unexplained! Review coverage in local press; POS available. Being Derbyshire born and bred, I knew of the rivalry between the two midland cities of Derby and Nottingham but had never witnessed it first hand until I embarked on my book signings for Chilling Derbyshire. Every time I took to my seat with my pen poised, to sign my scribble of a name on a copy of my latest book, somebody in the queue would start talking about Nottinghamshire and the fact that they had more ghosts than Derby and that they could certainly give the 'ghost capital' of England a run for it's money with as much gusto as Robin Hood in his green tights! "Chilling Tales from Nottingham" is present day eyewitness accounts of ordinary Nottingham people going about their every day lives and having extra-ordinary paranormal experiences. From possessed dolls, to Demons, Angels and UFO's and every paranormal experience imaginable, the people of Nottingham have witnessed it. ... Read more

Here is a look at various facets of the paranormal such asghosts, telepathy, and telekinesis. The book is too brief to takemore than a glimpse at each aspect of paranormal phenomena, but whatsets it apart is Anthony North's attempt to prove not so much thateach individual case is true, but simply that there is somethingunderlying "reality" as we have come to define it, something yet to beclassified by science but no less real than gravity. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent survey of the subject
North has written a great overview of the paranormal, seen from a semi-skeptical perspective. This book explores unexplained phenomena from scientific, psychological, and philosophical perspectives. It's not a sensational grab-bag of ghost stories, but if you're looking for a thoughtful treatment, this Guide to the Unexplained should please.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'd rather eat mud than read this whole book
I'd rather eat mud than read this whole book. It is sooodry and I hate it. If you want to read a book that manipulate intersting subjects such as levitation than buy thisbook. It could even make the fantastic tale of Harry Potter become wretchedly boring!
