4-0 out of 5 stars Nothing is as it seems. It's much, much weirder.
First of all, let me state that this book's conceit is a wonderful one:rather than explore a state, a region, or an entire country, as so many of these books do, Offutt confines himself to an area of no more than 100 miles from his home (and I literally mean his home...the first examined incident takes place '1 mile from home.'The next is '1.1 miles from home,' and so on in an ever-expanding circle until he reaches 100 miles).

Secondly, the limitation he's made on himself in the writing of this his book also serves to vary his subject material.Rather than 'all ghosts, all the time,' we get a mix of everything from hauntings to UFOs to the mysterious black-eyed children. They all make appearances here, and the great thing about the book is that you don't get 'ghost fatigue' or 'UFO fatigue' from reading too much about one particular type of phenomena.

Offutt's a journalism professor, and his writing style shows this. While it's light on analysis, the book goes from newspaper accounts and interviews with witnesses. There are no 'friend of a friend' tales here, and the book benefits from it.It also benefits from newer experiences...there are several cases from the last decade here, and that lends the book a freshness in tone, that it's not the same set of cases rehashed for new readers. There's genuinely new stuff here.

While I would have liked to see a few of the cases more in-depth (it's a fairly short tome, and a light read), this book is definitely better than most of its kind, and I recommend it.As he says in his afterword, "Nothing is as it seems. It's much, much weirder."Well done. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag, But Nonetheless Food For Thought
This is a compilation of articles published in FATE magazine down through the years.About half of the contributions are from 1990-forward, with some going back into the 1950s.The essays are of uneven quality, but there are some big names here-Ivan Sanderson, Karl Shuker, Jerome Clark, and Martin Caidin.

Most of the essays are quite easy to digest, and are not technical in nature. They provide an overview of many of the strange and unexplained phenomena associated with the world's oceans and lakes, including strange animals, odd events, lost continents (e. g. Atlantis), etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenon by Sylvia Browne
This is a great book to read. If you love Sylvia Browne you will enjoy this book very much. Very interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basically a dictionary of Paranormal Terms
I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this book so when I started flipping through the pages, it became clear to me that it's basically a dictionary of paranormal terms.Sylvia explains what's real and what's fake in the only way she can.As always, she simplifies things so that anybody can understand what she's talking about. It's a good read as usual (if you enjoy her books that is) but unlike other books, this isn't really talking about her experiences for the most part because like I said, it reminds me of a dictionary of terms that you could refer back to should you be reading a different paranmormal book and can't quite remember what a term means.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Loved This Book
This is actually one of my top favorite books of Sylvia's.I started reading just a few sections and could not put it down.It covers a large amount of information somewhat briefly, but is very helpful for reference and pleasant and interesting to read. One person said it stretched "the boundaries of credibility," however, from my experience over the years and my involvement in psychic matters, it was filled with absolute truth. If we think about energy and the vastness of the universe we should be able to see that all things are possible. In my experience this is very true.I loved also "The Celestine Prophecy," and if you have not read it, please do.It will give you a whole new outlook on life, death and on all of Sylvia's books. We can expect many new books by Sylvia, as she promised she would write as many as she could in her lifetime. She has much new information to impart, and I, for one, cannot wait to read about it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!!
Well written and informative. For those looking for insight into the unexplained, Sylvia Browne offers plausible answers from a psychics perspective.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but very far out
The book arrived promptly and in excellent condition. Its content is broad and at times, very difficult to digest because it stretches the boundaries of credibility. However, it is still a good read and rather entertaining. ... Read more

Product Description
Why are so many people fascinated by ghosts?

To answer that question, writer and paranormal researcher John Kachuba aka "The Ghosthunter" investigates haunted locations throughout the country and interviews scores of people who have had paranormal encounters. The author discovers a growing interest in ghosts today, which has spurred an American pop culture phenomenon based on the supernatural. Combining his case reports of actual hauntings, discussions with leading figures in the paranormal world, and stories about related subjects--buying ghosts on eBay, buying and selling haunted houses, ghost tourism--Ghosthunters presents an intriguing and witty look at America's paranormal world.

Set off down the trail of the paranormal and read about:
-A ghost hunt in a Connecticut coffee shop with lay religious demonologist David Considine.
-Spending the night with the ghost of Miss Lily at St. Augustine, Florida's historic St. Francis Inn.
-Spiritualist minister Rev. Rose Vanden Eynden's abilities to talk with the dead.
-The search for the headless inmate on a ghost hunt at West Virginia's Moundsville State Penitentiary.

2-0 out of 5 stars The author confirmed he had not physically seen any ghost
In the introduction section of this book, the author confirmed he had not physically seen any ghost. He got some strange, unexplainable recordings of strangle lights and disembodied voices on tapes. Those are not convincing enough to eliminate his skepticism about ghosts.

The "scariest" story in this book is chapter 20 "Sleeping with Miss Lily". A 13-year-old boy with an EMF meter in his hand told the author that Miss Lily, a ghost was lying on his bed. That meant he had slept beside her the night before. He startled right there but before being told about that he did not have any strange feelings at all. Besides the positive reading on the meter, there was no physical thing that could prove the existence of the ghost.

The author did enjoy his ghost investigations as his stories showed but the book is boring to me

4-0 out of 5 stars I Like It.
I bought John's book during a recent trip to the Suwannee River near Live Oak, Florida. The Suwannee with its history and dark, Spanish moss covered banks reminded me of a place where ghosts or at least their stories might exist so while plying a nearby book store I bought of copy of Ghost Hunter.

The writing in this book is top-notch. I finished reading a couple of books I had taken with me on the trip and found the writing to be abysmal at best.In this book, the writing was crisp, smart and constructed properly. In addition, it had just the right amount of humor.I suspect the author could easily slip into a writer of comedic fare if he chooses to pursue that avenue.

The 22 chapters were extremely varied in their content. This is also a positive. It was really a fun read to bounce between Civil War cemeteries to haunted items for sale on e-bay. It made the book a real page turner keeping the reader's interest through out the book.I did take away one star from a book that probably deserves 5 stars. The reason is the back cover proclaimed the author as "neither a gullible believer nor a skeptical disbeliever".I found this to be misleading.I wanted a little more skepticism. It seemed to me, at the end of the day, the author is a true believer. That is okay but it disagrees with what I had been led to believe.Another minor point; the book cover also states the author is a Certified Ghost Hunter. This almost caused me not to buy the book as if anything sounds flaky a CGH would be it.Happily I read in the book where he explored this area of certification but only as research for his book.

Buy this book if you have even the slightest interest in this subject. The breath and depth of Ghost Hunters will satisfy.Highly recommended!Michael L. Gooch, Author of Wingtips with Spurs

5-0 out of 5 stars five star
Good job sending it to me in a timely manner.I well recommend this product and its sender.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good read, very entertaining
I was thoroughly entertained by this book. At first, I thought that some of the chapters went nowhere, but it really was an inside look on what most ghost hunters go through. There were a few extremely fascinating chapters that made me want to read more on those subjects, such as "The Real Ghost Whisperer". I wished there was more additional information in the back, but overall I think this is an excellent starter book for anyone who is interested in reasearching the paranormal . . . it most certainly provides "Ghostology 101". There are also some very humorous aspects of the book and a cute quiz in the front. If you're nitpicky, you'll notice some editing problems. I think this book is a great one to keep around, suggests some helpful websites, and is definitely worth the buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun with Phantoms
GhostHunters, by John Kachuba (New Page books, Career Press) is a book one might find themselves engrossed in and not even know why...It's that kind of book.

From chapter 1 "Ghostology 101" through the final chapter the book is, if nothing at all, entertaining. John's ability to communicate his thoughts and experiences in such a candid and honest fashion is a breath of fresh air. It seems when it comes to books pertaining to the paranormal there are generally two categories, books that present information in a way as to only be believed if read in front of a campfire or books that are so jargon packed and bland you'd almost rather be a spirit yourself rather than try to understand them by it. Ghosthunters, on the other hand is the tastefully written story of "the ghosthunter" himself as he travels throughout Ohio and portions of Florida in search of answers.

With so many years of investigating beneath his belt, Kachuba discloses his experiences with prominent paranormal investigators such as Joshua P. Warren, and the Queen of Deliverance, acclaimed demonologist Lorraine Warren and a slew of others. Add to the mix the varied opinions of even more seasoned experts in a number of fields, the likes many a novice may have never heard of and you have a man with an '87 Buick Skyhawk painted to the T with ghosts, tombstones, demons you might yet take serious.

From the famed battlefields at Gettysburg and Shiloh to CBS's the Ghost Whisperer, John Kachuba, wit in tow, has been there asking the questions we wish we had the opportunity to ask!

In closing, I'll be adding Mr. Kachuba to my top 10 list of people I'd get a kick out of getting tanked and then sitting back to hear the stories. Whether you are a skeptic, a believer or someone in search of a great read, Ghosthunters delivers.

Be sure to check out the author's other works: Ghosthunting Illinois and Ghosthunting Ohio.

Product Description

Peer for the first time into dark corners where basic human physical desire meets with the unknown, mysterious, and supernatural. From "ghost rape" to demon lovers, here are the most startling manifestations of paranormal sexuality. Written by a scientist and leading member of the highly respected British organization Society for Psychical Research, this study is revelatory, thought provoking, and most certainly sensational. It presents thousands of reports of human sexual encounters with otherworldly beings that have occurred over the years. (Just two of the startling chapters are "Satanism in the Suburbs" and "Aliens Stole My Virginity.") These meetings appear entirely common, with people claiming relationships with poltergeists and angels. Then, too, there are the strange examples of outbreaks of sexual mass hysteria and a firm belief in supernatural orgies. The wealth of stories is nothing short of amazing, the phenomena almost beyond belief, and the author's unigue talent for providing both entertainment and a serious account unequalled.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title?
This is a really interesting book, but beware that it is written by a debunker, not someone actually interested in exploring the paranormal. The main focus of the book is to debunk and discredit the existence of the extraordinary, and doesn't really even open itself to any possibilities that cannot be explained away. The author comes from a scientific rather than a religous perspective, and that, at least is encouraging. However, the author uses science as a broad brush to sweep away any credible claim to the extaordinary side of life, and in this, I think, the author may have ended up performing a disservice to a subject that is left almost entirely unexplored.

5-0 out of 5 stars deviant and fun!
Unlike the previous reviewer, I am a skeptical pagan, so found this book to be well written, well researched, and facinating. If you enjoy a well written, though academicaly minded view of the intersection of sexuality and the occult, you will love this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Organized skeptical point of view
I'm a total believer and I have have lived with paranormalevents for years, In my case, they are wonderful and very much wanted. So this book was not exactly what I expected.
The book, although written by a paranormal researcher , is written from the skeptical point of view.He puts forth logical and natural explanations for the topics covered in this book such as alien abduction and ghost rape.I think most people tend to take a skeptical view of the paranormal, so they would probably like that approach.Even if you are a true believer like me, you might find the accounts illustrated in the book interesting. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Does the press perpetuate ignorance and superstition?
This is one of the books that makes you sit and think of something you watch ,hear and read every day.

"What would a person know if during the past quater-century he relied solely on American newspapes for his information about ESP, astrology, doomsday predictions, spiritualism, ghosts, poltergeists, exorcism, Bigfoot, sea serpents, psychic healing, clairvoyance, UFOs, and similar phenomena? Would this person have the facts? What would be his or her perception of the world?

In Superstition and the Press, America's most distinguished journalism professor and veteran newspaperman provides a devastating critique of the treatment by the press of claims of supernatural phenomena. This book documents virtually every story about paranormal events to appear in American newspapers for more than a generation. The author's conclusion is that newspapers, with rare exceptions, treat claims of supernatural experiences and paranormal phenomena without questioning their validity. This is an age of science, contends Professor MacDougall, but not of scientific mindedness.

Does the press perpetuate ignorance and superstition? The information contained in this book addresses this question." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spooky!
If you're into UFOs, physical anomalies, psychic powers, cryptoterrestrials, the reality of myth, the world's most inept hoaxes, or anything else that qualifies as weird, this is your book!Jerome Clarkpresents more information and research on most of the entries than anyother source I've read, and he even has a bit about why some people arebelievers and some people are skeptics. Many of the entries are of suchobscure occurences that even me, the paranormal buff, haven't heard of. Great for amateurs and pros of the field alike. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
In facts, not fiction, this book presents the case for the paranormal. Changing the way we look at the universe is not easy, and requires a true openness to exploration and experiment. Professor Ellison suggests that most of us are conditioned by our Western science-based education to think that the universe is much simpler and 'material' than it really is. He argues that we should recognize the limits of the current scientific worldview which fails to account for genuine paranormal experiences, including phenomena such as out-of-body experiences (OBE), reliably reported by thousands of people. In honestly exploring these areas, rather than denying them, he argues we could look more deeply into the real nature of human existence. ... Read more

Product Description

Putting forward the best evidence yet of life after death, challenging the accepted ideas of exactly what humans are and what they become the moment after taking their final breath. Drawing on scientific research from colleagues as well as her own recordings and eyewitness accounts, and highlighting the phenomenon of materialization mediumship—or spirits manifesting in solid forms in a séance setting—the incredible cases revealed here may provide conclusive proof of an afterlife. Written in an accessible style, this book takes the field of psychic study into the 21st century and will appeal to anyone with an open mind and an interest in alternative views of what occurs after death.

1-0 out of 5 stars faulty reasoning
I agree with the first reviewer. While I do think that a case for an afterlife can be established (see e.g. J. Eccles' "Evolution of the Brain - Creation of the Self", chapter 10), this book does not contain much evidence and is fraught with faulty reasoning and twisted logic, spelling mistakes and omissions, and complaints to the effect that the evidence for an afterlife and those who forward it are consciously suppressed by a scientific and religious elite - "if you can't win by reason, go for volume" seems to be the motto here. You can win by reason, but this has got to be done in a different way than it is done in this book. A shame, Emma Heathcote-James primer "seeing angels" was better written and based on a more sound methodology.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not just mildly awful!
After reading two other reviews elsewhere, I waited for its arrival with keen anticipation only to find it truly awful! Why? Well, one hardly knows where to start - but I'll try! The book's author, apparently, has a PhD in religious experience but the utterly poor standard of scholarship demonstrated within beggars belief: it's repetitious, banal and full of `waffle'. She devotes a whole 4 pages to debunking Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, primarily by invoking the work of a retired university lecturer in engineering called Ronald Pearson. An example of the author's method of argument can be found at the end of Chapter 4 where she concludes that `the biggest argument that I can offer you in favour of there being an afterlife is that no scientist has yet proved that the afterlife does not exist'. Well, I can't recall any scientist proving that creatures called clangers don't live on a far away planet living happily on blue-string soup fed to them by a soup dragon but it doesn't mean that they do! The whole thing has the feel of an offering from a well-intentioned 16 year old trying to get good marks for her GCSE coursework! How on Earth this ever got to be published is also something of a mystery: the book certainly appears not to have been edited - whole sections should have been excised not to mention the fact that it's also full of misspellings and gaps where words should have been in order for it to make, at least, some sort of sense. To sum up - it's garbage and does neither its author's cause nor the people whose work she claims to 'champion' any favours at all.
