Product Description
This text provides an introduction to organic chemistry for students who require the fundamentals of organic chemistry as a requirement for their major. It is most suited for a one semester organic chemistry course. In an attempt to highlight the relevance of the material to students, the authors place a strong emphasis on showing the interrelationship between organic chemistry and other areas of science, particularly the biological and health sciences. The text illustrates the use of organic chemistry as a tool in these sciences; it also stresses the organic compounds, both natural and synthetic, that surround us in everyday life: in pharmaceuticals, plastics, fibers, agrochemicals, surface coatings, toiletry preparations and cosmetics, food additives, adhesives, and elastomers. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars lacking mechansim
These cards though sturdy could include the mechansims in the various reactions o-chem students will have the misfortune of learning. The fact that there are no arrows showing electron movements makes the deck somewhat incomplete.Fortunately there are ample room in the cards so that I as the student can write the mechansims myself. But then I might as well as write the reactions and make own flashcards.

5-0 out of 5 stars I hate o-chem!
But I love the deal I got on this book. Thank you so much for saving me so much money!! And the book arrived in the right condition. Good seller!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
The book is great for science majors, despite that it is geared towards High school students. My college switched to this book from the Solomon and Fryhle textbook. I admit that I was very scared of Organic Chemistry and had to take the class twice. I used this book the second time and it's not that the book waters things down, but makes the topic more approachable. It explains things clearly and not with a tone that many Science book authors use of assuming you should know this or that. The book uses language understandable by any ordinary and average student like me, and this made me very comfortable at actually attempting to succeed the second time. I actually received an A in the course and understood the material as I should have. For the second half of Organic Chemistry, O-Chem 2, I switched back to the Solomon and Fryhles andbecause I knew the functional groups and the theory, I was quite unafraid of using such book. My opinion changed on the Solomon and Fryhle book, and I render both books to be top notch. However, Fox gets five stars for making O-Chem a breeze.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad...but...
Good cards, but they are too closely tied to the related textbook for me (I use the Wade text for my course). Also, turns out it's easier and better to just make your own cards that deal specifically with what you need to memorize. Lots of cards that were way too simple and thus pointless. Other cards were good but not specific to the reactions I needed. If I was using the text that these are tied to, it could be useful to save time, but try making your own cards first.

1-0 out of 5 stars First Edition is terrible, don't know about later editions
The biggest problem is terminology. Technical terms were used before they were defined (if they were defined at all) and in such a way that the reader would not even KNOW the terms were being used in a context-specific, technical manner. When you run across a word or idea you don't understand, you look it up in the index, right? That didn't work. The book/index "interface" (?) was utterly unorganized. I imagine some problems have been corrected in subsequent editions. If you are looking for a good organic chem text to use as a reference, my understanding is that John McMurry's books are really good. I've had several chemists recommend his books to me. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Chemistry
This was my first time studying Chemistry, and the book was excellent.

It's intended to students in the health field (ie nursing), and their applications are wonderful.

A little heavy on the exercises, but better too much than too little. It would do well to include more answers to the practice questions, but that's how they get you to buy the Study Guide. Oh well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to chemistry...
this is an excellent introductory chemistry textbook....

it is great for the last year of highschool.. or for bridging from highschool to unviersity..

it isn't that deep enough for most first year chemistry courses... but reading through this book before OR while you are in ur first year course will greatly help you understand the material... because this book doesn't assume u know a lot about the subject already...

cuz face it guys... nobody tries to remember stuff in highschool.. i personally just wanted to get it over with... therefore I forgot everything ...... but in university ur mentality changes.. u actually want to learn.. not just get 90 and get it over with.. that's why I bought this the summer before my classes started.. and went through it a little everyday...

well my First Year class used Raymond Chang's CHemistry book (more advanced than this one) ... but I found it much easier, because I reviewed during the summer... and when I hit a topic that was hard.. i would reference this book.. read it.. then go back to Chang's and read the material... this helped a lot because this book assumes no previous knowledge....

so it's good for ppl like me.. for the few out there who actually cared in highschool.. and remember nething... this book is a waste.. because it isn't deep enough for first year chem courses (it is deep enough for non science major chem courses.. but not the hardcore first year general chem course)

hope this helps ... Read more

Product Description
Writing Reaction Mechanisms in Organic Chemistry, Second Edition, is an invaluable guide to charting the movements of atoms and electrons in the reactions of organic molecules. Miller and Solomon illustrate that understanding organic reactions is based on applying general principles rather than the rote memorization of unrelated processes, and, in turn, emphasize that writing mechanisms is a practical method of applying knowledge of previously encountered reactions and reaction conditions to new reactions. Students and research chemists alike will find this book useful in providing a method of organizing and synthesizing an oftentimes overwhelming quantity of information into a set of general principles and guidelines for determining and describing organic reaction mechanisms.

* Essential for those students who need to have mechanisms explained in greater detail than most organic chemistry textbooks provide.
* Illustrated with hundreds of chemical structures
* Extensively rewritten and reorganized to make the presentation and format even easier for students to use
* Contains many problem sets and answers to all problems to help students work through general principles and applications
* Appendixes have been added to this edition that contain easily referenced information on Lewis structures, symbols for chemical notation, and the relative acidities of common substances ... Read more

This book is made for those who think that Organic Chemistry is just a succession of empirical reactions. If you have problems memorizing your Organic course this book should help a lot. 1-0 out of 5 stars Schaums outline organic chemistry
It was not the updated copy as shown it was an outdated very very old issue, I am very upset by the book, I will hesitate to order anything else from Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good practice resource
Everyone can guess that a subject as extensive as Organic Chemistry, making well over thousand pages long textbooks, cannot be packed well with the same concept-teaching potential into a 400-page long outline. The authors make it clear from the very first page that to really master a subject one has to practice, practice, and again practice. The word "Outline" may serve a bad service to those who think this book is as shallow as, say, "Organic Chemistry Demystified". It is not, and in fact it's probably too advanced for those who rate this book low. On the other hand, "Outline" also serves a bad service to the book itself, as those seeking a more advanced practice may not even consider it. I would rather call it Intermediary Organic Chemistry. But I bet if you do find time to go thru every problem in the book you will never be the same person again as before.

3-0 out of 5 stars Planet Orgo...
I am giving this book 3 stars because I did not receive much help from it.A lot of the information that was covered in this book did not go into enough detail, like an entire subject was explained in two sentences. I needed a little more explanation, but I guess this is why the book is deemed an outline.

I was able to gather some (a very small amount) useful information from it. But, pick the book up anyway, because to master Orgo you need as many resources as possible, especially at 3 in the morning and you are trying to figure out where to place an ethyl group. In addition to this book, grab an elementary type orgo book, like orgo for beginners or orgo for nursing majors. These type of books explain things with great detail using an ABC approach. Then do as many problems as you can! Buy a ring of notecards and write part of the reaction on the front and the rest on the back. Study these cards every night religiously. You should be able to make sense out of the reactions and pass the class with a good grade with a considerable amount of study. (I received an A using the above method)

4-0 out of 5 stars Practice Makes Perfect
Schaum's outlines are perfect for what they propose to do -- give the student as much practice as possible. They are experience tools, not teaching tools. The secret to doing well in genchem/orgchem is to practice, practice practice. The more problems you do, the better you will become. Concepts and theories are only half the game in chemistry.

3-0 out of 5 stars So you want to do better at Organic?
What you should remember about the Schaum's series is that all of them, though they may call themselves "outlines," are in fact rather cheap textbooks. They include many more solved problems than your standard textbook, but they are also not as slick or nice to look at.

The organic chemistry outline can be helpful to you, perhaps. The main draw is that each chapter includes a summary of reactions that might be worth it... if, that is, you already know which reactions are more useful than others. The amount of information is great, and this may make it difficult for you to sort out which ones are worth your attention.

The Schaum's outlines are, in my opinion, great for those motivated students who would like to gain some knowledge of the subject. They can also help when you are stuck with a problem, as chances are you will find a solved problem in the book that is at least similar.Whether that is worth the cost is another question. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Organic Book!
Wow!This is a great organic text! After taking undergraduate organic courses, I faced the graduate cume for organic chemistry, which I failed miserably.I bought this book after seeing many high reviews, and let me just say that they were right. This text is like a lecture in a book.It offers a less tradition order of presenting organic chemistry, but I have now begun to grasp this seemingly impossible subject with this 'new British method'.It explains everything. It doesn't leave something out for you to wonder about why it is the way it is.(However, because of this, the text is pretty lengthy.)

This book helps you to understand organic chemistry-- not memorizing reactions, but understanding the concepts behind the reactions (movement of electrons, electrophilicity, nucleophilicity, etc.) so that you can very accurately predict the product of a reaction that you have never seen and propose a very likely mechanism.

Another great thing about this text is that the problem sets at the end of every chapter are not 30 problems long. There are an average of, I would say, 8-10 problems at the end of each chapter, and with the solutions manual for this text, I think that anyone can learn, really learn organic chemistry.

The only flaw in this book is that there are some errors, which I am sure they have supplemented online, I just haven't looked, but this is to be expected for a first edition.Overall, highly recommended for undergraduates and graduate students alike!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written solutions manual
Not much to say about this, except that I am taking an organic chemistry course, and this book is great. While it does not thoroughly explain the answers to every question in the corresponding textbook, the answers are generally enough to provide enough clues to solve the problem. Reommended. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars It was OK.
I wish this book was easier to read. The colors are great, but explanations could be better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware of Lying Reviewers!
Beware of the so-called reviews on all Examkrackers books. While the textbook publishers are not smart enough to understand MCAT science, they are smart enough to have their employees come on here and copy and paste glowing reviews about their products. It is a shame that the company will play with people's futures in order to make a buck.

I can also say that I tried out McGraw Hill's MCAT review book and it was also garbage. It does a poor job of summarizing, especially in organic chemistry, and does not even tell you what material is or is not on the test! Go for Princeton Review or Kaplan.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best I've used
I've used Kaplan, Princeton review, and many others - I think Exam Krackers does the best at highlighting and explaining the important concepts. The others will overwhelm you with unnecessary detail, and I didn't like the way they were set up. Using exam krackers, my score jumped 7 points.

Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biochem Book
I got this book for one of my nursing classes. The book is pretty much straight forward but I would totally recommend getting the solutions manual to help you with the odd problems and it also gives you practice quizes for each chapter.

2-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the most poorly written text I have ever had the misfortune to purchase
I've not read every chemistry book out there so I'm no expert on how this book stacks up against the rest, but as someone who has had the misfortune to have to read this book and learn the material, I'm incredibly disappointed in the quality of the teaching in this book. The author has managed to cram random questions in everywhere, without managing to actually address the concept covered by her question.Due to overly full classes, I was forced to take this class online and this book just does not cut it. In every chapter, I've had to scour the internet to find an actual explanation of the concept Timberlake was attempting to cover and often find much shorter, easier to understand explanations as well as better ways to use formulas to gain the desired answer. The additional questions and challenge questions are overly redundant and many of the challenge questions are impossible without a higher level of knowledge on the topic. This is a ridiculous concept for teaching in an online class format and due to the number of topics covered, what teacher has time to cover these in class and still cover everything in the semester. It seems Timberlake put many of the questions/problems in this text to toot her own horn on the level of her knowledge, rather than write the text to actually teach and then question for understanding.I'm so annoyed by this text after 10 weeks of it that I'm actually taking the time to write this review.

3-0 out of 5 stars Amazon has a problem and does nothing to fix it
This textbook was advertised as "Brand New" and in every brand new textbook is a intro page that states that a keycode comes with the textbook yet Amazon and the booksellers they contract with continue to sell this book as brand new and ALWAYS fail to provide a keycode.A simple solution that other "honest" booksellers utilize with textbooks such as these is to advertise the textbook as "Text Only" when selling it without a keycode so buyers are never mislead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased

Very pleased, the book is exactly what I wanted. All the materials made it.The shipping was a bit expensive but as I live in Alaska I expected such.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Guide!I loved the "Concept Maps".
Any Organic Chem student using the Organic Chemistry: Sructure and Reactivity text will benefit from this supplemental text. The study guide contains solutions to problems in the main text as well as excellent concept maps and additional practice problems.Material is well organized and easy to work through. The study guide provides plenty of practice for building competency in OChem.Speaking from the perspective of a pre-med student, this book helped me focus on the areas of OChem that I needed to work on.Overall, I highly recommend it for all students already using the main Structure and Reactivity text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fentastic work

Editorial Review

Product Description
The Organic Chemistry of Enzyme-Catalyzed Reactions is not a book on enzymes, but rather a book on the general mechanisms involved in chemical reactions involving enzymes. An enzyme is a protein molecule in a plant or animal that causes specific reactions without itself being permanently altered or destroyed.

This is a revised edition of a very successful book, which appeals to both academic and industrial markets.

Illustrates the organic mechanism associated with each enzyme-catalyzedreaction
Makes the connection between organic reaction mechanisms and enzyme mechanisms
Compiles the latest information about molecular mechanisms of enzyme reactions
Accompanied by clearly drawn structures, schemes, and figures
Includes an extensive bibliography on enzyme mechanisms covering the last 30 years
Explains how enzymes can accelerate the rates of chemical reactions with high specificity
Provides approaches to the design of inhibitors of enzyme-catalyzed reactions
Categorizes the cofactors that are appropriate for catalyzing different classes of reactions
Shows how chemical enzyme models are used for mechanistic studies
Describes catalytic antibody design and mechanism
Includes problem sets and solutions for each chapter
Written in an informal and didactic style ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of problems will be solved in later revisions
The index for this book .... For example, there are a fair number of examples of the epoxidation reaction, but not a single pointer toward that in the index of the book. And much the same thing for other types of reactions.

It would also be nice if there was a more clear transfer between basic organic principles and then biological applications.

He does do a good job showing this is some cases (i.e., the benzoin condensation), but a few more parallel examples would have been very useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professor Silverman does it again!
This book is an excellent resource for undergraduate and graduate students studying enzyme chemistry and organic mechanisms. Prof. Silverman does a fine job of giving many different examples of enzyme mechanisms. By notfocusing totally on one kind of enzyme or catalysis, he succeeds inpainting a broad picture for the reader, while not sacrificing content. Theonly drawback to this edition is the large amount of typographical errorsthat appear throughout. Perhaps better editing is in order for futureeditions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars None better on the market
I use this text for my introductory organic chemistry course.Banks' book, while it is "old" and unglamorous, is both less expensive and a much better reference than Traynham's workbook "Organic Nomenclature."One excellent feature is that both correct and incorrect answers are explained. The text includes sections on natural products, on heterocycles, and on Chemical Abstracts, but does not include reactive intermediates.

The only drawback may be that Banks' coverage is too thorough! Some students find it intimidating, but I doubt they would be better-served by Traynham's book, the only alternative. And other students have told me they find it easy to use and useful. ... Read more
