Editorial Review Product Description The book has been kept as simple as possible and is liberally complemented with diagrams designed to be easily understood and memorised. Only the most fundamental and clinically useful mathematical formulae are quoted, and the optical principles are applied to clinical situations. Ophthalmology examinations have changed substantially since the last edition was written and a total rewrite of this essential guide has become necessary. The third edition has been made more comprehensive and detailed to keep up with these changes and incorporates three new chapters: refractive surgery, contact lenses and lasers. Other new material includes photometry, visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, colour vision, absorptive lenses, fluorescence, ultrasound, and the specular microscope. Customer Reviews (2)

Editorial Review Product Description Written by a pioneer in the field, this overview of charged particle optics provides a solid introduction to the subject area for all physicists wishing to design their own apparatus or better understand the instruments with which they work. It begins by introducing electrostatic lenses and fields used for acceleration, focusing and deflection of ions or electrons. Subsequent chapters give detailed descriptions of electrostatic deflection elements, uniform and non-uniform magnetic sector fields, image aberrations, and, finally, fringe field confinement. |

Not for Physicists
Test and Measurement Bible Two main reasons: 1) The authors go into detail regarding how different instruments work from physical principles. Such an understanding is useful in understanding a device's (and measurement's) accuracy and validity. 2) The practical tips and explanations on how to make measurement alone make this an essential reference. This book neatly compliments theoretical books and papers by explaining how the typical measurements you may read about in a journal article are made and the underlying issues that contribute/take away from a measurement's efficacy/accuracy. Some of my colleagues say that because this book was written by HP people and the examples shown involve HP instruments, this book loses some value. If so, this loss is miniscule. Most photonic test instruments, HP or not, work on more or less the same principles. Whether or not you own HP instruments, you will find this book an invaluable reference.

Editorial Review Product Description This text offers an in-depth treatment of integrated and fiber optics, providing graduate students, engineers, and scientists with a solid foundation of the principles, capabilities, uses, and limitations of guided-wave optic devices and systems. In addition to the transmission properties of dielectric waveguides and optical fibers, this book covers the principles of directional couplers, guided-wave gratings, arrayed-waveguide gratings, and fiber optic polarization components. The material is fully classroom-tested and carefully structured to help readers grasp concepts quickly and apply their knowledge to solving problems. Following an overview, including important nomenclature and notations, the text investigates three major topics: Each chapter starts with basic principles and gradually builds to more advanced concepts and applications. Compelling reasons for including each topic are given, detailed explanations of each concept are provided, and steps for each derivation are carefully set forth. Readers learn how to solve complex problems using physical concepts and simplified mathematics. Illustrations throughout the text aid in understanding key concepts, while problems at the end of each chapter test the readers' grasp of the material. The author has designed the text for upper-level undergraduates, graduate students in physics and electrical and computer engineering, and scientists. Each chapter is self-contained, enabling instructors to choose a subset of topics to match their particular course needs. Researchers and practitioners can also use the text as a self-study guide to gain a better understanding of photonic and fiber optic devices and systems. |
