4-0 out of 5 stars continual improvements in NMR usage
NMR has now been used for over 40 years, yet it still continues to improve, as evidenced by this collection of current papers.

The applications include studying porous glasses and percolation effects therein. NMR is used to give highly spatially resolved images that [hopefully] yield insight. Another subject is acoustic streaming, where a fluid moves due to an imposed sound field. A longstanding problem has been how to analysis streaming in detail. A paper explains how NMR gives maps of streaming that are very detailed.

In geology, one paper looks at NMR for characterising porous rocks.

Overall, the book shows a broad use of NMR. A common thread is the ability of NMR to give diagrams or maps that cannot be easily otherwise obtained. ... Read more

Product Description
The past decade has seen huge advances in the application of microscopy in all areas of science. This welcome development in microscopy has been paralleled by an expansion of the vocabulary of technical terms used in microscopy: terms have been coined for new instruments and techniques and, as microscopes reach even higher resolution, the use of terms that relate to the optical and physical principles underpinning microscopy is now commonplace.

The Dictionary of Microscopy was compiled to meet this challenge and provides concise definitions of over 2,500 terms used in the fields of light microscopy, electron microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, x-ray microscopy and related techniques. Written by Dr Julian P. Heath, Editor of Microscopy and Analysis (http://www.microscopy-analysis.com),  the dictionary is intended to provide easy navigation through the microscopy terminology and to be a first point of reference for definitions of new and established terms.

The Dictionary of Microscopy is an essential, accessible resource for:

  • students who are new to the field and are learning about microscopes
  • equipment purchasers who want an explanation of the terms used in manufacturers' literature
  • scientists who are considering using a new microscopical technique
  • experienced microscopists as an aide mémoire or quick source of reference
  • librarians, the press and marketing personnel who require definitions for technical reports.

Product Description
Materials Engineering has evolved as a crucial engineering discipline during the last 20 years. Microscopy has proved to be by far the most powerful technique for examining and understanding materials microstructures. Its methods are essential for developing new engineering materials of all types.
The ^IMicroscopy in Materials Science Series embraces books ranging widely across the materials spectrum, including metals, ceramics, polymers and semiconductors, and deals with the full range of available techniques. Individual monographs concentrate on a particular type of material or a particular problem in materials sicence and review the use of microscopy techniques to characterize and understand the relevant materials microstructures. The series will be of great interest to a wide variety of academic and industrial research scientists and engineers.
^IAtlas of Backscattering Kikuchi Diffraction Patterns will provide a comprehensive handbook on how to identify crystalline phases in metals, semiconductors, ceramics and minerals in the fields of materials science and engineering, metallurgy, physics, physical chemistry, crystallography and geology.
The authors describe the historical development of the backscattering Kikuchi diffraction technique, how it works and how it can be applied using the scanning electron microscope. It is the most straightforward method for obtaining selected area diffraction patterns and when used with the scanning electron microscope can be used on bulk samples. Patterns observed using this technique extend over a wide angular range and over a wide range of crystalline phases: the technique can thus be used to identify, classify and examine the materials microstructure. The text clearly explains how to prepare samples for examination, and how to interpret the patterns observed.
The Atlas section includes photographs obtained from metallurgical, mineralogical, ceramic and semiconductor samples, from six of the seven crystal systems with different Bravais lattics and point group symmetries. The examples chosen clearly ilustrate the features particular to a crystal system.
David Dingley has worked extensively on the development and pracical applications of the BKD technique since 1980. He provided the first commercial equipment for owrking on their interpretation, through the use of low light level television cameras. He has ben involved in several collaborative research projects in materials science and of late provided the first online computer assisted diffraction pattern analysis methods.
Karim Baba-Kishi is currently based at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He carried out his original research with Dr Dingley at Bristol, and worked on the early photographs taken to demonstrate the value of the BKD tehcnique. He has published several important papers in this area, and until recently was a lecturer in phsyics, and ran the electron microscopy and analysis facility at the University of Essex.
Valerie Randle is working on the commercial application of BKD and other analysis techniques for extending our knowledge of how microstructure determines the way in which different engineering materials behave. Dr Randle is a Royal Society Research Fellow, and is now continuing her research at the Department of Materials Engineering, University College of Swansea. The reader may be intersted to refer to ^IThe Measurement of Grain Boundary Geometry also published in this series, and to her earlier published work with the Institute of Materials, for further information on how to interpret BKD patterns. She has produced many of the diffraction patterns which form the atlas. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This book provides the reader with a comprehensive introduction to high-energy electron diffraction and elastic and in elastic scattering of high-energy electrons, with particular emphasis on application to modern electron microscopy. Starting from a survey of fundamental phenomena, we introduce the most important concepts underlying modern understanding of high-energy electron diffraction. Dynamical diffraction in transmission (THEED) and reflection (RHEED) geometries is treated using a general matrix theory, where computer programs and worked examples are provided to illustrate the concepts and to familiarize the reader with practical applications.Diffuse and inelastic scattering and coherence effects are treated comprehensively both as a perturbation of elastic scattering and within the general multiple scattering quantum mechanical framework or the density matrix method.Among the highlights are the treatment of resonance diffraction of electrons, HOLZ diffraction, the formation of Kikuchi bands and lines and ring patterns, and application of diffraction to monitoring of growing surfaces.Useful practical data are summarized in tables including those of electron scattering factors for all neutral atoms and many ions, and the temperature dependent Debye-Waller factors given for over 100 elemental crystals and compounds. ... Product Description
Acoustic microscopy enables you to image and measure the elastic properties of materials with the resolution of a good microscope. By using frequencies in microwave regime, it is possible to make the acoustic wavelength comparable with the wavelength of light, and hence to achieve a resolution comparable with an optical microscope. Solids can support both longitudinal and transverse acoustic waves. At surfaces a unique combination of the two known as Raleigh waves can propagate, and in many circumstances these dominate the contrast in acoustic microscopy. Following the invention of scanning probe microscopes, it is now possible to use an atomic force microscope to detect the acoustic vibration of a surface with resolution in the nanometre range, thus beating the diffraction limit by operating in the extreme near-field. This 2nd edition of Acoustic Microscopy has a major new chapter on the technique and applications of acoustically excited probe microscopy. ... Read more
