5-0 out of 5 stars A very nice introduction to the basics
Although quite compact, this book is packed with useful information. The discussion of water and all the associated moisture variables is complete and organized. It would be difficult to find a better discussion of the wide variety of thermodynamic diagrams available (skew-T ln P, emagram, tephigram, Stuve). The only place where this book suffers is in the lack of vector notation.Don't expect to find references to modern instrumentation--this book was written almost 50 years ago! Nevertheless, the topics chosen have passed the test of time.An excellent introduction to the essential background for all meteorologists.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to theoretical meteorology!

PREFACE This book owes its existence to a course on meteorology which >i been given by the author i n Williama College for the last eight years. This course is a Junior and Senior elective course "with three exercises a week during a half year. _A_ syllabus, covering both the text-book used and the added material, was prepared for the course. This was at first mimeographed, then revised and printed. Later it was again revised and reprinted. This book follows the order of topics in this last syllabus very closely, and is thus essentially a r^simi<5 of the material which has been gathered for the course. This book is essentially a text-book. For this reason, the marginal comments at the sides of the pages, the questions, topics for investigation, and practical exercises have been added. A. syllabus of each chapter has been placed at its beginning, and the book has been divided into numbered sections, each treating a definite topic. The book is also intendefl for the general reader of

Product Description
INTRODUCTION TO METEOROLOGY by SVERRE PETTERSSEN.Preface:The aim of this book is to present in an elementary manner the basic principles of modern meteorology. Intended for students without previous acquaintance with the subject, it is written in response to a demand for a nontechnical text to serve the many short and elementary courses in meteorology already in progress in the United States. It is written more for the purpose of creating interest and background than for furnishing a technical and detailed discussion of the various branches of meteorology. For this reason the use of calculus in the presentation of mete orological theories has been avoided. Actually, this book is an expansion of a chapter on meteorology written for the British Empire edition and the American edition of Weemss Air Navigation and an abbreviation of the authors recent book Weather Analysis and Forecasting. 1 However, this book is not addressed specifically to pilots or weather forecasters, although its leaning is decidedly toward synoptic and aeronautical meteorology. On account of its elementary character, the text does not con tain references to meteorological journals and papers. Instead, a list of advanced textbooks is included to assist the reader in finding more advanced literature on meteorology. The authors warm thanks go to Miss Margaret Whitcomb for her valuable assistance in revising the text, preparing the dia grams and tables, proofreading, and indexing. SVERRE PETTERSSEN.Contents include:PREFACE v INTRODUCTION 1 CHAPTER I. THE ATMOSPHERE 3 Composition Impurities Structure Stratification. II. Apparatus And Methods. § .-Thermometers.rjISTORfCAL.—The history of the early deve- lopment of the thermometer is not known with certainty, but in the latter part of the sixteenth century Galileo used at Padua a kind of thermo- scope which consisted of a glass bulb () with a narrow bore tube (b), a couple of spans in length, attached. A general idea of the construction is given in Fig. I. After the air in the bulb had been rarified by heating, the open end of the tube was inserted into water in an open vessel (c), and the tube was held upright. The water would rise to some extent in the tube, as the air in the bulb cooled ; and the level of the water in the tube would oscillate somewhat with any change of temperature to which the air bulb would be subjected. In this first instrument the fluctuations of the atmospheric pressure would of course introduce some errors, but the principle of the modern thermometer had been discovered, and its further completion did not need the genius of Galileo to develop it. It is not certain who suggested the next step in the gradual improvement of the instrument. Abbe ascribes it to Galileo, and Hellmann thinks that the search nowbeing made by Javaro concerning Galileo's career may bring to light some further information. At present, however, we must say (according to Hellmann) that a French physician, Jean Rey, about the year 1631, conceived the idea of inverting the Galileo thermometer and filling it with a liquid and observing the expansion of this. Sometime before 1641, the Grand Duke Ferdinand II. had adopted the plan of using alcohol as the fluid, and closing the open end of the tube so as to exclude the air.The members of the Acca- j demia del Cimento, most of whom were pupils of Galileo, devised several forms of therm... ... Product Description
This book has been designed for use both as a text for students of the atmospheric sciences and as an up-to-date sourcebook for researchers in allied fields who need guidance into particular topics. As a text, the book is suitable for advanced undergraduates and first-year graduate students, and each of its ten chapters concludes with a short problem set. As a sourcebook, the largely self-contained topical chapters introduce basic concepts and provide bibliographic pathways through the current literature for professionals in such fields as remote sensing of the atmosphere by earth satellite monitoring, solar energy, and acid rain.Four chapters cover the atmospheric aerosol and cloud physics, and four cover the processes of radiative transfer. Extended treatment is given to these two broad groups of phenomena because they directly affect the structure and motions of the atmosphere. In addition, there is a chapter on optical phenomena in the atmosphere (including refraction, mirages, the rainbow, the glory, the corona, the heiligenschein) and one on atmospheric electricity (covering the electrical structure of the fair weather atmosphere, the several proposed theories of thunderstorm charging and a discussion of the lightning stroke).Henry Houghton, a past president of the American Meteorological Society and long-time head of the MIT meteorology department, is universally recognized as one of the leading authorities on the subject of physical meteorology. His book is the culmination of more than 30 years of research and teaching at MIT, where he is now professor emeritus. ... Read more

Product Description
Air Pollution Meteorology and Dispersion provides a concise yet thorough review of the basic theories, models, experiments, and observations of pollutant dispersal in the atmosphere. It offers the theoretical and empirical bases of frequently used dispersion models while emphasizing the limitations and uncertainties inherent in these models. Organized into twelve chapters, the material is presented in order of increasing difficulty. The first half of the book treats the basic tenets of air pollution modeling; the second half deals with the more detailed theoretical and observational aspects of dispersion. Sufficient background material on atmospheric structure, dynamics, and circulation systems and their importance to atmospheric dispersion is included for students who do not yet have a strong meteorological background. Turbulence and diffusion theories, such as gradient transport, statistical, and similarity theories, as well as analytical and numerical dispersion and air quality models, are also discussed. Problems and exercises are included in each chapter, making this an ideal text for undergraduate and graduate courses in atmospheric science and mechanical engineering. ... Read more

Product Description
This book, the only one of its kind available, presents PCA from its simplest form through its abstract formalism, including applications. Furthermore, it extends the use of PCA far beyond its well-known applications to scalar (e.g. temperature) or vector (e.g. wind) fields. Much of the material is hitherto unpublished, thus greatly extending the realm of applicability of PCA, and many suggestions are made for its future application. The first half of the book provides a comprehensive discussion of PCA, including solved numerical examples, beginning with a simple bivariate data set and progressing to the PCA of multivariate fields. The use of selection rules to establish statistical significance is emphasized. The second half of the book compares PCA with other analysis techniques such as Factor Analysis, Linear Regression Analysis, and Canonical Factor Analysis. The book also discusses the use of PCA in construction of statistical-dynamical models, in the detection of moving patterns in data sets, and in studies of stationary random processes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of PCA... out of print!
This book is so complete that you may want to have it as a reference book in your library. The book starts with very simple examples of bivariate data distributions in order to explain the notion of Principal Components, from many points of view like statistical, physical (called here "dynamical"), with real values, with complex values. Then it goes on to to multivariate fields, time modulation, space modulation and going deep with many applications like cluster analysis, canonical correlation and complex harmonic analysis. In my opinion this is not a book for undergraduate students, but for people who already has a strong understanding of linear algebra and accustomed to the matrix formalism as well. But by compiling such a wide range of theory and applications the Editor (this is a posthumous book) has produced a very complete book for researchers and graduate students. A must-have... pity that it's out of print. It is possible to make an online petition asking for a new editon -perhaps?
