Editorial Review

Product Description
Pulling together information previously scattered throughout numerous research articles into one detailed resource, Physical Metallurgy of Direct Chill Casting of Aluminum Alloys connects the fundamentals of structure formation during solidification with the practically observed structure and defect patterns in billets and ingots. The author examines the formation of a structure, properties, and defects in the as-cast material in tight correlation to the physical phenomena involved in the solidification and the process parameters.

The book draws on the author’s advanced research to provide a unique application of physical metallurgy to direct chill (DC) casting technology. He examines structure and defect formation— including macrosegregation and hot tearing. Each technology-centered chapter provides historical background before reviewing current developments. The author supports his conclusions with computer simulation results that have been correlated with highly progressive experimental data. He presents a logical system of structure and defect formation based on the specific features of the DC casting process. He also demonstrates that the seemingly controversial results reported in literature are, in fact, caused by the different ratio of the same mechanisms.

Compiling recent results and data, the book discusses the fundamentals of solidification together with metallurgical and technological aspects of DC casting. It gives new insight and perspective into DC casting research. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
For many years, various editions of Smallman's Modern Physical Metallurgy have served throughout the world as a standard undergraduate textbook on metals and alloys. In 1995, it was rewritten and enlarged to encompass the related subject of materials science and engineering and appeared under the title Metals & Materials: Science, Processes, Applications offering a comprehensive amount of a much wider range of engineering materials. Coverage ranged from pure elements to superalloys, from glasses to engineering ceramics, and from everyday plastics to in situ composites, Amongst other favourable reviews, Professor Bhadeshia of Cambridge University commented: "Given the amount of work that has obviously gone into this book and its extensive comments, it is very attractively priced. It is an excellent book to be recommend strongly for purchase by undergraduates in materials-related subjects, who should benefit greatly by owning a text containing so much knowledge."

The book now includes new chapters on materials for sports equipment (golf, tennis, bicycles, skiing, etc.) and biomaterials (replacement joints, heart valves, tissue repair, etc.) - two of the most exciting and rewarding areas in current materials research and development. As in its predecessor, numerous examples are given of the ways in which knowledge of the relation between fine structure and properties has made it possible to optimise the service behaviour of traditional engineering materials and to develop completely new and exciting classes of materials. Special consideration is given to the crucial processing stage that enables materials to be produced as marketable commodities. Whilst attempting to produce a useful and relatively concise survey of key materials and their interrelationships, the authors have tried to make the subject accessible to a wide range of readers, to provide insights into specialised methods of examination and to convey the excitement of the atmosphere in which new materials are conceived and developed. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars meh...a little bushwaggered
I will say there was obviously much work put into this book...it has a real wealth of information. That being said I will also tell you that this author really likes to use words that simply complicate an otherwise simple notion...thats irritating. He gets so caught up in it that run on sentences are prevalent and full of blah blah academia jargon. I think he wrote the book to be proud of it and not to convey information in a fluid fashion. That is all that I have to say about that =) ... Read more

The book is important because it reflects a trend, especially in microelectronics manufacture toward recyclability. Europe and Asia are moving towards legislation to ban the use of lead in solders and public demand in the US will likely have the same result. Producers of solders and manufacturers who use them will have to invent and employ suitable substitutes and A Guide to Lead-free Solders will show them how to do so.

Product Description
Powder metallurgy is a forming and fabrication technique consisting of three major processing stages. First, the primary material is physically powdered, divided into many small individual particles. Next, the powder is injected into a mould or passed through a die to produce a weakly cohesive structure (via cold welding) very near the dimensions of the object ultimately to be manufactured. Finally, the end part is formed by applying pressure, high temperature, long setting times (during which self-welding occurs), or any combination thereof. In powder metallurgy or ceramics it is possible to fabricate components which otherwise would decompose or disintegrate. All considerations of solid-liquid phase changes can be ignored, so powder processes are more flexible than casting, extrusion, or forging techniques. Controllable characteristics of products prepared using various powder technologies include mechanical, magnetic, and other unconventional properties of such materials as porous solids, aggregates, and intermetallic compounds. This book provides new research on this field from around the globe. ... Read more

Product Description
Mining, as one of the world's earliest industrial activities, continues to yield minerals and resources both valuable and fundamental to civilization. Yet the industry that produces such riches is not as lucrative as it may seem. It is one endeavor to discover a mineral deposit, and quite another to mine it profitably.

The industry's strategy for coping with low profitability has focused primarily on controlling production costs. Despite mechanization, automation, and other technical improvements, the aggregate profitability of mining still falls far short of that realized by most other industries. What appears to be lacking, contends author Juan Camus, is not additional technical knowledge, but rather sound management practices that utilitize the existing knowledge base more productively. Management of Mineral Resources aims to raise the level of mining profitability through better management--the process of generating plans and supervising their implementation.

This book is concerned with the analysis of some of the internal, controllable factors that influence mining production effectiveness. It combines the best thinking in mining and management so that practitioners can devise a concrete strategy for generating maximum shareholder value. Ideas in both of these areas have rapidly evolved in recent years, and this insightful text presents an authoritative review of the current state of the art.

A mass of published material exists, yet it is widely scattered--much of it in technical papers--and therefore not readily accessible. The thought-provoking material in this book has been selected, summarized, and presented by the author in a form that preserves the perspective of its relative importance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Principles to Create Huge Value from Mineral Resources
"...the main question for the company is whether to exploit, sell, or hold the deposit for future use. Mineral resource management can be seen as the discipline that deals with the required activities to support and make this decision."

This book explains the why, how and who of this fundamental decision faced by mining companies. The author also explains why this should be of vital interest to governments, educational institutions and the struggling shareholders of mining companies. Consequently, this book should be in the hands of anyone involved in, or aspiring to, management at either the operating or corporate level of the minerals industry.

Juan P. Camus explains in plain language the theory and use of cutoff grade optimization techniques developed by people such as Kenneth F. Lane, author of the highly regarded book, "The Economic Definition of Ore". The foreword is written by Ken Lane, who lays a challenge for the next book on this fascinating and fundamental aspect of our industry.

The real-life examples, based upon Juan's personal experience, illustrate how these optimization tools helped create huge value from mineral resources. Following the successful application of these principles of optimization within Codelco, the CEO of the world's largest copper producer is quoted as saying, "In the past, we were doing things right, but it seems that now we are doing the right things." These "right things" contributed well over a billion dollars to Codelco's value and still hundreds of millions more for another large Chilean copper producer. Interestingly, the author points out that the techniques he advocates could apply in other industries.

However, beyond the tools and of at least equal importance, the author reviews organizational theory to propose structures and systems to capture opportunities for value creation, which he contends elude too many players in the mining industry. The author distinguishes between Strategic and Tactical mine planning stages, noting their different objectives, roles, time horizons, technical requirements, the types of people suited to each and their relative value creation potential. The author argues that without the proper systems in place for planning, the value of the mineral resource will be sub-optimal. Not only will the owners' be worse off as a consequence, but so also will governments, suppliers and society at large. Proper management of resources is vital to the mineral industry.

The book can be read relatively quickly, touches upon a wide breadth of knowledge and will leave the reader realizing that value creation in the mineral industry goes well beyond the familiar routines of employing economy of scale and cutting costs. As the author amply illustrates, the value of mineral resources lies very much in the application of intellect and ingenuity. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This book is dedicated to the basic training of students of engineering in the field of physical metallurgy. One of the most serious problems confronting the engineer is the selection, treatment, and use of metals and alloys. These problems cannot be left entirely left entirely to the specialist known as the metallurgist, but must be dealt with to an appreciable extent by the engineer. No engineering project is without its problem of a material to do the job. To cope with this situation the engineer must have a basic understanding of the science and art of metallurgy as it is related to his interest. The authors have intended that this book should meet this need. While the purpose of this book in its second edition remains the same as in the first edition, there is a tendency to shift the emphasis to even more fundamental view. An even greater emphasis has been given to the fundamentals by adding three new chapters, namely, The Structure of Matter, Physical Properties, and Mechanical Properties. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick Delivery
I received my textbook in the estimated time frame, and it was in pristine condition. Very happy with the provider and I would purchase from them again in the future when I need more textbooks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Incredible content, poor binder quality
I have not had a chance to really delve into the content. But paging through the book, I am very excited to go deeper. The book seems to touch on almost all mfg processes, even addressing material behavior, metallurgy, tribology, and some other wide ranging subjects that affect manufacturing.

That being said, I bought this book "new" from Amazon and it has several gouges on the front and back cover. Also the back cover hinge looks like someone took a knife to it so that there's only the inside glued paper that's holding the hard cardboard onto the book. Never seen anything like this from Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book and great educator
i was privileged enough to have dr. kalpakjian as a teacher in college before he retired. we used his 3rd edition as our textbook. now as i start my career in engineering, i am finding that i need to refer to the book! i borrowed the book in college for his class and am now buying a copy for our office.a great reference.very well thought out book with excellent diagrams.worth every penny.

3-0 out of 5 stars Oversimplified
The emphasis of this book seems to be more on the basic mechanics of the different processes it describes. That's fine, and important to understand manufacturing, but...

BUT, he gives very little attention to how the material being processed responds to the processing.Without a better understanding of the microstructural effects -- and ensuing DEfects -- it may be too hard to troubleshoot the processes described in this book.

My professor was flipping through the early chapters of this book (where the materials issues are presented) and declared them "cheesy."

So, to sum up:this good book becomes great by combining it with other books/courses/professors/etc that will interject materials issues into this books discussion of the mechanical issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great engineering book
This book is one of the best in manufacturing engineering, even if there are a few mistakes in some mathematical deductions. I think it is a very didactic and easy to learn book, it shows almost every manufacturing process used by modern industry. ... Read more
