5-0 out of 5 stars Bible Of EM
Without A Doubt , The Bible Or Emergency Medicine .. Although Using A Smaller Font , Its The Best And The Toxicology Part Is Better Now ,In Short A Must Have !!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best EM text for completeness
This book is a great read compared to any other text out there for EM. It is long but the time invested in learning and reading it worth-while.

5-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece in Emergency Medicine
Here as before, the authors have brought Emergency Medicine to a new height. This book, like the last two editions, revamps the subject in a form that is readable, and to the point without the superfluous "fluff" seen in other books.

It comes in two volumes (instead of the three like prior editions).On-line access is a definite plus when I am at work and can't haul around a big fat textbook.I can search for things on my computer.

I totally recommend it.It is one of my 'must haves' in my armamentarium of EM.

5-0 out of 5 stars down to 2 volumes..
No complaints. I purchased the book not the CD.Pleased with online access, as internet is available everywhere. This is far better than Harwood and Nuss for completeness of content. So many of the chapters there have leave information out.

1-0 out of 5 stars No CD, just a "Pin Card"
I spent $300 for what appears to be a CD case, within the box is a card with a scratch-off area for a password to get online and sign in, NO CD! On the Amazon site if you look under "Product Details" it clearly states that this is a CD, I assure you that it's not (as of 3/30/06).If you're like me, you go to multiple ED's and carry a laptop, or you may want to read outdoors or on an airplane.Unless you're always able to connect to the internet this product is useless. In addition the back of the box is states "May Not Return if Opened".We'll see about that, given that this is false advertising. The old 5th edition works fine on CD rom, why did they have to go and screw it up? ... Product Description

NMS Medicine, Sixth Edition is the ideal reference and review for medical students in the internal medicine clerkship. The concise, outline-format coverage of essentials, end-of-chapter USMLE-style questions, and case studies at the end of the book offer excellent preparation for the shelf/end-of-rotation exam and USMLE.

This edition has been thoroughly updated and streamlined to focus on essential material. The revised questions better reflect the level of difficulty of shelf/end-of-rotation exams. The book has a new two-color design with more illustrations and wider margins for notes.

A companion Website offers the fully searchable text, additional material which is indicated in the book by icons, and a comprehensive examination.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
It's an amazing book, i have an earlier releases of it and they are also very good, but it's better ofcourse : )

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
this book was really similar to the information taught in our pathophysiology course so I found it very helpful. I never looked online for content because i thought there was plenty of useful information in the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars mediocre book
I really *wanted* to like this book. I used NMS Surgery and NMS Pediatrics previously and thought both were excellent. This book might be helpful for others, who like me, have trouble learning by reading a list of bullet points such as in StepUp of First Aid. Some things in this book were explained really well. However, I found many typos, which made me nervous about the quality of the editing as well as the reliability of the information in the book. Some chapters have large chunks of text missing. For example, in the endocrinology chapter's discussion of oral antihyperglycemic agents, it completely leaves out sulfonylureas and biguanides. The additional online information is a nice idea in theory, but it isn't user friendly to assume someone will log on to a computer to look up a chart. If it's important, put it in the book. If not, leave it out. I hope this book will be updated someday and improved, since I think it has potential.

2-0 out of 5 stars Covers some topics well, but severely lacking
I thought this book would be great, but it's really not!It lacks huge chunks of information about diseases. There are some disease processes that it just flat out doesn't even mention. It also has certain sections that require you to look online to read about.I bought the book to read on paper, not on my computer! It's sitting on my shelf awaiting to be resold or burnt.Overall it is a poor choice.

I can't really recommend anything else besides Harrison's or Cecil's if you're looking for complete coverage. But as any medical student would know, those are impossible to read.

2-0 out of 5 stars BETTER OPTIONS OUT THERE!!!!!
I bought this book because I loved the NMS Q&A for family practice and figured if the question book is this good then imagine what the text will be like. The book is set up in outline fashion with sentence descriptions (not bullet points like Step-Up/First Aide) but many have little computer mouse icons next to them. This means go online and look at the text online. Problem is the text is not yet available online. I've e-mailed the publishers but I can't imagine that will do anything at all. Also the review questions at the end of each section are not very difficult (and definitely not the quality of Q&A family practice). Overall the book is good but it really needs the missing information (the mouse icons) to be complete. I would say us Step-Up when studying for the Shelf exam or boards and not NMS Medicine, atleast not until they get the online text working!!!! ... Read more

    Product Description

The impact of nutritional medicine has had a dramatic and controversial--but documented--impact on the lives of Dr.Strand's patients and can now change readers' lives too.

When Dr. Ray Strand found himself in a losing battle, unable to successfully treat his wife who had suffered chronically with pain and fatigue, he agreed to try the regimen of nutritional supplements that a neighbor suggested. Much to his surprise, his wife's condition began to improve almost immediately. That amazing turn of events led him to dedicate himself to researching alternative therapies in medicine, particularly in the arena of nutritional supplements.

Dr. Strand's illumination of the body's silent enemy-oxidative stress-will astound you. But, more importantly, his research will equip you to protect or reclaim your nutritional health, possibly reversing disease and preventing illness.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Shows How All the Pieces Fit Together
A colleage lent me her copy of this book, and I was quite impressed by the depth and breadth of this author's knowledge of how the different body systems work and how specific nutrients affect each.He mentions a number of conditions (macular degeneration, diabetes, prediabetes, etc) and recommends supplementation specific to each.He cites clinical research and doesn't just make unsubstantiated claims. Great book for anyone who wants to understand how nutrition affects health.

1-0 out of 5 stars What Your Doctor Doesn't Know About Nutritional Medicine May be Killing You
I ordered this product on 4/13/2010 and still have not received it as of yet and it is now 5/15/1020. I have contacted the company and have gotten no response. I am very dissatisfied in the company.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth Reading
Ray Strand's "What You Doctor Doesn't Know . . . " is very helpful in explaining basic nutritional health issues we face today. He uses some helpful analogies as well as science, studies and charts to help explain how free radicals can cause cellular damage and what can be done to prevent or repair this damage. He explains why simply "eating right" is not enough to reverse damage that already exists. He even offers some basic guidelines for which supplements can aid in alleviating various illnesses (wish he included migraines). His personal story as a physician who could seemingly do nothing for his wife's debilitating illness and his journey of personal exploration in to supplements is quite winning.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Your Doctor Doesn't Know About Nutritional Medicine May Be Killing You
Excellent book written by a physician who questions the doctor/pharmacy relationship in medicine.Medicine today is steered by money and not a real quest for medical truth. This is a must read book for everyone.I got mine at Amazon.Recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review By William Chang
    Book Review:
"What Your Doctor doesn't know about Nutritional Medicine May Be Killing You" by Doctor Ray D. Strand, M.D.
Dr. Strand educates readers that the oxidative stress, the process that causes iron to rust or a cut apple to turn brown, is the root cause for coronary artery disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, macular degeneration, cataracts, Alzheimer's dementia, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and the rheumatoid arthritis. Those chronic degenerative diseases covered most major disease known to mankind and are responsible for most people suffering or dying.
One of my biggest surprises is that cholesterol is not the culprit behind heart disease; the inflammation of blood vessels is.This is new from what we have been educated.
Our own body's immune systems are the best defense against a chronic degenerative disease - not the drugs doctors can prescribe.High quality nutritional Supplements proved to enhance our body immune, nature antioxidant defense and nature repair system.
I had heart disease which nearly caused a fatal heart attack!I had eye problems which four leading eye doctors told me there is no cure. And every cold season, I have throat infection, fever; running nose & cough that may also led to Pneumonia.Following Dr. Strand's "Preventive Medicine & Complementary Medicine" advices, I find fish oil with rich Omega III and high quality Nutritional Supplements are very helpful for all my three medical problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little book
I am just starting out in homeopathy, so take this into account.I love this book, it has charts in it that have quick reference that lists the remedy, specific indications, general symptoms, worse from and better from categories. It is perfect for me as a beginner!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good remedies
This book had many remedies that are good to have on hand. Also, had a brief explanation of what Homeopathy is to better understand. Great book for a beginner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and comforting
This is the first book I bought on homeopathic medicine when I first began using it more than twelve years ago.I like the way it is written - it almost feels as though you have a kindly physician sitting across from you. That being said, my one complaint with this book is the repetories/remedies pages that are placed at the end of each chapter.I have never used these and find them a bit confusing.

If you do buy this book (and I encourage you to - it's well worth the investment) I would really encourage you to read the book through. Then you will be able to more easily find the remedies that apply to you in times of emergency.I now have several books on homeopathy on my shelves, and this is always the first one I turn to when I or a family member are sick.

Well worth the investment. ... Read more

    Product Description

A practical book written for both health professionals and the layperson, this revised guide deconstructs common myths about the use of massage in cancer treatment. Reviewing literature that shows cancer to be caused by genetic mutation and the influence of hormones, the opening discussion emphasizes that mechanical action such as massage does not break tumors open or cause them to spread. The book purports that the real medical issues for massage therapists center on ameliorating the discomfort of treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. The topics covered include massage in hospitals, in respite care, for the dying, and for exhausted caregivers, with appendices summarizing research on oncology patients and massage. Charts for the adjustment of massage techniques according to the treatment a patient is undergoing are also included.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatand important info

Every Licensed massage therapist should have this book. Why? Because a large portion of our population has had a journey with cancer. After they are released from the Dr. and finished with treatment there may still be plenty of contra indications to consider. This book goes over them all clearly and fully.Loved the book, loved the class even more.It will be in my reference library forever!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wealth of information
Wonderful book! Filled with a wealth of information. If you are a massage therapist , looking to learn more about massage and cancer this is the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medicine Hands: Massage Therapy for People with Cancer
I have been a massage therapist for nearly a quarter of a century. It is wonderful to see a comprehensive book for massage therapists about massage and cancer. There have long been many fears about massage and cancer that just aren't true. There are certainly precautions and concerns. This book addresses those well. This book also brings out the heart of the massage therapist.Addditionally, I do like the updated edition.

I shared the book with my co-worker who is a massage therapist, an educator and a nurse (who has worked in acute care oncology). She writes, "My first glance, just to peruse a few pages, lasted almost an hour!I am very impressed with the contents, layout, pictures and scenarios. It is written in terms that are clear and concise. The 'Info boxes' and stories by therapists, patients and their families help bring the importance of touch therapies done safely to a population so in need.
Medicine Hands is a pure gift to massage therapists, thank you! It is written professionally, compassionately and realistically."

As instructors at a massage school in Massachusetts, we will definitely use this text and recommend it to our students as we discuss pathologies and the appropriateness of massaging cancer clients.

Again, thank you for a book that has been long-needed in our field.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the classics
This two volume series is what most fellows(trainees) studying Neonatology use. I would not recommend it for the average medical student or even resident unless one is seriously considering Neonatology as a career. It packs a lot of material in two volumes, is well edited, and easy to read but most residents will not have the time to read it during their rotations in Neonatology.

I do not think most lay people will get much out of this although one reviewer found it quite useful. The book assumes a knowledge of basic physiology and medicine that would make it difficult to fathom for many people.

I would recommend "Care of the High Risk Neonate" by Klaus and Fanaroff as a better book for medical students wanting a grasp of the subject or the "Lange" publication on Neonatology.

With these warning I would give my heart endorsement for this book. I used it twice for passing the boards and then renewing my boards in Neonatology and found the most useful source of all. I used it with a DVD from the "Pediatrix" organization which references this source extensively.

5-0 out of 5 stars What an experienced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner has to say...
This is the book you must have if going into neonatology or neonatal nursing. This is the gold standard and the most up to date information in the field.I have had the privilege of working with the authors and many of the contributors for years now,and I continue torespect and admire their work and knowledge. It's heavy and worth every ounce!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very accessible
I'm an average everyday bean counter with no background or interest in medicine.I just bought this book because my kid decided to come out at 28 weeks, and let's be honest:Doctor's are too afraid of lawsuits to tell the rest of us lay people all the goods. However this book is great and very accessible for the average high school graduate, such as myself, to understand what's going on.Granted, wikipedia is also nice because doctor's like to use words like "emesis" when "vomiting" will do, however the concepts are presented very clearly.I recommend it to any unfortunate soul who's kid is in the NICU and wants to know what's going on.Of course, if we can understand it, I'm not sure how helpful this book is to real doctors who do this for a living.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
It is difficult to read, no doubt about that. However, it has a edge of giving the reader the required concept. Also it is unanimously known that the neonatology board questions contain a lot of questions, foundation of which are laid on the themes , well described in this book.
Definitely recommneded for any body really serious in neonatology. The latest chapter of bioethics and legal medicine is worth mentioning , as it has not been covered in any other neonatology text book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great evidence-based guideline for healthcare practitioners
This book really helped me to understand fully the concept of evidence-based medicine and how to integrate it to my profession. I am a physical therapist and I have learned a lot from this book. The authors provided links that would help the reader that can help in practicing evidence-based medicine. Overall, it is an excellent book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Well done, but....
This book is well done from an educational perspective. You'll find nice diagrams, figures, a CD-ROM, and everything you need in order to assimilate it nicely. References are provided and well organized.

As usual when it comes to EBM (and paradoxically), it lacks a little bit in introspection, like for example when it claims that basically the only real limitation of EBM is that the physician needs to acquire new skills, while other criticisms (such as the "cookbook" approach or the fact that it might tend toward saving money against the benefit of the patients) are dismissed as "concerns" on how the method is (or will be) used. The authors genuinely sound like thinking EBM should always be applied everywhere to every problem, and that borders with black-vs-white thinking, which is dangerous in and of itself.

However, if you are interested in knowing EBM, how to apply it, where to find resources, etc, this book is most definitely for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Review
Excellent review of evidence based medicine.Concise and to the point.Have used it multiple times during residency and fellowship.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first and still the best
Sackett's EBM is the Bible for anyone conducting systematic review. It is THE how-to guide for clinical medicine SR and a great starting point for thinking about SR in the social sciences. Thank you Dr. Sackett for bringing SR to the masses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Evidence Based Medicine
This is an excellent "how to" manual for those who are serious about learning how to apply evidence based medicine principles.Lots of folks talk about "evidence based medicine" but few really know what it means. This is obviously intended as a teaching tool for residents but is equally useful for any physician who is interested in learning the principles required to do the best job for his/her patient. The size and summary cards are handy for carrying with you wherever you may need them!Easy to read but with great substance. ... As of today there are 5 Kindle versions of this book for sale on Amazon. I bought 3 of them, and none of the 3 I bought included the illustrations. Still a great read, but the original version of this book has interesting drawings and photos. Too bad, I would have loved to have the complete book on my Kindle.

A.& C. of M. is a fantastic book indeed with it's "ancient" coverage of medical anomilies in one place!! It also had a brief cameo in the movie "The Breakfast Club."However this version of the book(Blue Unicorn Press) has none of the original pictures of which there wereover 100 in the original version (late 1800's) and in the reprints duringthe mid to late 20th century. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference material.
Wonderful book and expanded over last edition. Auerbach and his contributors have created a superb reference with up-to-date topics and treatments.
Not only does it address just about every wilderness medicine topic conceivable, but also a few pages addressing search and rescue and survival. The book has a very complete index.

My only negative is that the thin pages are easy to damage (but lighter) and overall size (922 pages) might not be great for tossing in your pack for a hike.

Further, not the best reference for those who don't have medical training/ experience (it is written for medicine professionals).

Overall if you have an interest in wilderness medicine, get this book. If you travel outdoors, take a course that addresses wilderness medicine, and then get this book!

And the big book "Wilderness Medicine" by Auerbach is fantastic, as well!

This is a great resource for any time you leave your house. Evan more so if you leave the paved road.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
After completing my WFR course I wanted the best possible reference to further my knowledge and review to refresh my memory. Every time I grab this book to get advice on a treatment there is either no information or nothing useful. There's info on giving CPR to llamas, but nothing on wound infections, for example. There IS plenty of good stuff, but too many omissions, so I do not recommend this book as a primary reference for wilderness first aid.

Private eye V.I. Warshawski knows her friend Consuelo's pregnancy is already risky-she's sixteen and diabetic. Suspecting malpractice, V.I. begins an investigation- and a reluctant romance with an ER doctor. 5-0 out of 5 stars Paretsky
This is Sara Paretsky at her best - and her best is very very good.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ruined by gratuitous political sub-plot
Paretsky writes her usual solid story, but this book was ruined for me by a gratuitous and rabidly pro-abortion subplot.A pro-life group was depicted as patent and unalloyed evil, while its individual members were characterized as overweight, fanatic dullards. This just didn't work.

This subplot, which adds nothing material to the story, drops this book 2 stars in my rating system.

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining
While it is clear that Paretsky used the story to pontificate around the abortion issue, the story was not (in my opinion) held hostage by her views.Of course, she must have known that those who hold opposing views might be somewhat derailed by her machinations.Apparently she felt it was a risk worth taking. For my part, the story was entertaining and amusing. There were sufficeint plot twists and turns, a romantic interlude, loveable yet annoying characters... all the stuff that makes us enjoy V.I.This is what I call hot-fudge-sundae fiction.I read it for its entertainment value--not intellectual nutrition.YUM!

2-0 out of 5 stars Politics over Plotting
I have read all of the Sara Paretsky mysteries, and think this is the weakest of the group. She maintains her writerly skill, but the plot in this novel feels like it was devised to make a political point about women's access to health care and particularly to abortion. In the process, she takes pot shots at her political opponents by making the characters of those who disagree with her unidimensional, manipulative, and unlikeable. The novel does have suspenseful elements, but not enough, and I just didn't buy the story. If you want to read all the books in the series, this is readable. If you're picking the best, go with Hard Time or Tunnel Vision.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bitter Medicine a Bit Sugary
Good storyline but characters sometimes difficult to discern. Story a little choppy; not as tight as it could be;somewhat maudlin but still it holds the interest until you discover whodunit ... Read more

Siegel, a New Haven surgeon, believes that the power of healing stems from the human mind and will, that his scalpel only buys time against cancer, and that self-love and determination are more important than choice of therapy. His philosophy has caused radical changes in his practice. Siegel recounts many arresting anecdotes: joyous stories of patients who survived against all odds, sad chronicles of those who seemingly gave up and assented to their own deaths. The author's credentials make this one of the more plausible books on the mind-body connection. For most public libraries and holistic health collections. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Therapeutic Resource Indeed!
This book provides an incredible narrative about the power of the mind in influencing disease and health. Medical treatments are indeed influenced by our emotional coping, our stories, our relationships. The presence or absence of love is so critical in healing, and Siegel's account is filled with depth and beauty. It gives much hope to anyone with chronic illnesses

5-0 out of 5 stars This book gave me hope
When i was first diagnosed with brain cancer (and given a terminal diagnosis) I pretty much gave up hope. Then a friend sent me a copy of Bernie Siegel's book 'Love Medicine and Miracles' and i realized that i could become an 'exceptional patient'.This book is a call to self responsibility to all cancer patients and a reminder that their healing is not dependent on medical science but is founded on their willingness to live, to love and to boldly take responsibility for their lives. As a cancer survivor i recommend this book to anybody facing a health challenge.
    Thanks Bernie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lucid Explanation of Pulmonary Medicine
I found the book enjoyable, even though I have been a practicing physician for more than 25 years and have been teaching internal medicine for almost 20 years. Before my purchase, I wanted a book that reviewed key principles of pulmonary diorders, which I could use as framework to organize disparate pulmonary diseases. The book meets that objective.

Aimed at medical students, it is cearly written, making comprehension easy. It emphasizes principles, allowing the reader to build his or her knowledge on a solid foundation. I found it easy to use the principles to classify various pulmonary diseases, making them easy to understand and recall. The notes or summaries at the margins afford both a quick preview and review of the salient points in each chapter.

I believe the book can be enhanced by adding three or four clinical cases at
the end of each chapter to give the reader an opportunity to apply his or her knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal book
I used this book for my second year pulmonary pathophysiology course and I have not been able to find another text written as well. The chapters are organized into easy to understand chapters that are not too long but the details in the text are definitely more than sufficient. I love the side notes in the margins of the text as little reminders of what is important and the discussions about PFTs in the end and the intro normal physiology allowed me to get an amazing grasp of the material.

4-0 out of 5 stars For your office
I consider this book as an excellent companion for attending outpatients.
The focus is on the management of the cronic case of the frecuent diseases studied by the internist.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent Handbook for Primary Care Internists
I am an internist who will be returning to outpatient primary care after several years absence. So I wanted to review a handbook that would provide an up-to-date, concise outline of conditions that an office based internist is likely to encounter.I am a fan of the Washington Manual series, and have been using the Washington Manual of Medical Therapeutics since I was an intern many years ago. However, that book is geared more to a hospital based practice. In about 2003, a Washington Manual of Ambulatory Therapeutics came out that was an excellent resource for office based internists, but it has been 7 years since the one and only edition of that book was published and it is now out-dated.

So, I was really looking forward to reading through the first edition Washington Manual of Outpatient Internal Medicine published in April, 2010.Having read through several sections, I am mostly pleased with the format and content. The book's chapters are divided mostly by organ systems, but some diseases such as diabetes mellitus, inflammatory bowel disease, and GERD receive there own chapters. Most disease entities are presented in the common General Principles, Diagnosis, and Treatment sections and the discussion is in a bulleted, outline form.

At over a 1000 pages, I would have expected that this book would be fairly comprehensive in presenting disorders that an internist is likely to encounter in everyday practice, as well as many other rarer conditions about which internists should be knowledgeable. It is not.To provide one glaring example, the book completely omits any discussion of peptic ulcer disease.

There are many other books of this type on the market that are of equal or better utility to clinical practice. For instance, Outpatient and Primary Care, 2010 Edition, is only about a third the length of the Washington Manual, but in some respects is more comprehensive for the disease entities that are covered, especially with respect to treatment options.I also appreciate the fact that Outpatient and Primary Care provides both the generic and trade names for drugs, which this Washington Manual does not.

Overall, this is a good, but not great, manual for practicing clinicians.I would have preferred that Lippincott would have decided to publish a new edition of the Washington Manual of Ambulatory Therapeutics, which I feel was a superior reference for office practice.

"A fascinating real-life voyage through medicine and beyond into the greater reality. Intensely human and readable. Full of hope and wonder. A truly heartwarming page turner."

--Robert Bruce, author of Astral Dynamics and Energy Work

Medicine, Miracles, and Manifestations is a nonfiction narrative about the surgical career and spiritual quest of neurosurgeon Dr. John L. Turner and his journey into the field of Integral Medicine.

During his career as a board-certified surgeon, Dr. Turner's curiosity drove him to explore nontraditional healing techniques that broadened the scope of recovery for his patients, including energy healing, chanting and meditation (approaches historically found in religious practices), soul travel, and astral projection.

In this fascinating book, you will discover:

    * How metaphysical events such as remote viewing, telepathy, consciousness, and life after death are all verifiable manifestations of the way the human brain interfaces with the universal consciousness.

    * That consciousness persists after the death of the physical body.

    * That our life is carefully planned before birth but there is an element of free will.

    * That we can interface with a spiritual world and a collective human unconscious.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Neurosurgeon Worth Reading -- Fascinating
I was made aware of Dr. John L. Turner's book 'Medicine, Miracles, and Manifestations' via Amazon's recommendation page. One of my enduring reading interests is metaphysical phenomenon such as 'near-death experiences', 'out of body experiences', etc. What made me purchase this book is that it's written by a neurosurgeon. When was the last time your doctor used the word 'miracle' or 'manifestation' during an office visit?Probably never. So therefore my curiosity.

Turner narrates how he initially explored, and eventually incorporated, non-western healing concepts into his practice. His journey and the results are fascinating. This includes things as simple as putting fresh flowers next to a patient's bed, to esoteric activities like chanting or visualizing. Some patients recovered miraculously. Some passed on peacefully. Each patient was a gateway to new perception.

The book reads quickly. Each chapter focuses on a particular patient or event. Many uncanny, or perhaps a better word is serendipitous, coincedences are described. This is not to say there is no technical information in the book. There is, and I now appreciate more deeply just how intertwined the brain/body connection is. The title 'Medicine, Miracles and Manifestions' well captures Dr. Turner's medical practice.I definitely recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Physician Ahead of the Times
Science has always lagged behind ultimate reality, and the prevailing scientific fundamentalists have imposed punitive sanctions upon those who dare venture outside the narrow parameters of their fundamentalism, but there have always been men and women of courage and vision among scientists, those who are willing to risk ridicule and rejection so that science can move closer to ultimate truth. Dr. John L. Turner, the author of this book, appears to be one of these courageous individuals and his book is very much welcomed.

A neurosurgeon, Turner reports on some of his very interesting medical cases, including one in which a malignant brain tumor disappeared after seven Buddhists monks intervened."I couldn't believe my eyes! There was no trace of the lesion that had glared menacingly from the screen before and after the surgery," Turner writes. In another case - brain surgery in which Turner seemed to have exhausted all options - he decided to try prayer."This case taught me that there is a higher power," Turner explains his decision to continue pursuing his journey.

Turner tells of his experiments with astral projection, remote viewing, and meditative chanting. By chanting, he found that he could disassociate his mind from his body and become aware of remote events. Then he discovered Jorei, a form of healing energy channeled from the spirit world pioneered by Mokichi Okada of Japan.Initially, Turner found Jorei "a difficult pill to swallow," but the more he studied and observed it, the more he began to realize that there was something to it. "I had no idea that I was about to follow a meandering pathway that would manifest dramatic results with alternative methods of healing and the use of universal energy," he writes.

After further training in Jorei, Turner began to experience first hand the positive results that can come from tapping into the universal energy. As might be expected, Turner had materialistic colleagues who smirked, sneered, and scoffed at his newfound beliefs in a spiritual world and energy healing. Undaunted, Turner pushed on and with additional successes further embraced the blending of Eastern and Western healing methods. "We are in contact with the universal force before birth, after birth, and beyond death of the physical body," he concludes, adding that it is not a matter of faith but of waking up to the spiritual world.

Based on what he has learned so far, Turner says he is reasonably certain we live on in a never-ending universe. But one of his goals now is to find ways in which complimentary medicine, or energy medicine, might contribute to the quality of this lifetime."We need to better understand," he offers, "that we are one with that energy and one with all things."

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth a look for those who want to blend tradition and spirituality
Traditional medicine is good, but an understanding of spirituality can enhance its application. "Medicine, Miracles, & Manifestations" is a memoir and spiritual manual of author John L. Turner, reflecting on his time as a successful surgeon and how coming to understand the soul and new age medicine has only enhanced his practice and given him a better understanding of the human spirit. "Medicine, Miracles, & Manifestations" is well worth a look for those who want to blend tradition and spirituality.

3-0 out of 5 stars Title is a little misleading
I expected this book to be based on a lot more than just a few case studies. I would have liked to hear more about his patients; more than just the handful that he mentions. I thought Dr. Turner came off slightly arrogant. Most of the book is about him. He chronicles his own spiritual journey. On the upside this doctor goes above and beyond to heal his patients. He offers good information on a variety of different alternative healing methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars RN recommends this book for all Doctors

5-0 out of 5 stars easy to read
Short, bulleted chapters make for easy reference, but it is also interesting enough to just plough straight through. Definitely appreciate it as a brand new practitioner.

5-0 out of 5 stars great intern guide
This book is a great guide for medical students who want to go into emergency medicine, it is short enough to read in a month but long enough to cover a lot.I recommend reading it before or during your fourth year emergency rotation and again between the end of fourth year and the beginning of your intern year.Carry it with you as a reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars a must have!
Although very different in style, i loved it! I think its one of those few indispesible books that ED resident should not miss in his library ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Emergency Medicine Secrets: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (Secrets (C.V. Mosby))
(Purchased on 05/01/2008) Have wanted this book for some time and found it cheapest at Amazon.
This book is well layed out and organized by disease process and symptoms, good to have on hand for quick reference (but don't leave it lying around the ER, it will disapear fast).
Easy read.I would recomend for med students/residents or ER nurses.

4-0 out of 5 stars very usefull, and nice to read
When I started work in an emergency department this book gave me many tips to solve some difficult cases. It is written in a way you can read it for few minutes in between patient visits in your night shift. The readability is high and you never get bored because it fixes every question in few lines (maximum 20 but mostly less than 10).
Obviously it is not really comprehensive, due to the small dimension and the question-response format; but it is sufficient also to study on it for examinations. It requires at least a basic understandig of medicine and it is not interesting for a lay person in many chapters. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Dated Material.
Informative, yet a bit dated.Having said that, this material should be required reading for all allied health professionals, as it is apparent that we must take measures to counter pharma's self-serving influence in health education.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr Henry Bieler
I boughtthis book to give to a friend. I so want people to know of his wonderful work in healing. I was a patientof Dr. Bieler's for many years. I am now 85 years old. I know the outstanding workthe good doctor did. He cured my sister of ovarian cancer in the 4th stage by diet. A very large promionenthospital gave her 6 months to live. His diets were different for each patient. I think the book explains the human body so well, if one reads it carefully. To know him was to love him.A genius of a man, dedicated to helping mankind.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recomended
This book was written to help everyone improve their health. It tells how vegetables, and broths work better than drugs. You really are what you eat, this book will tell you the truth.Bieler's broth page 205 is a life saver celery, parsley, zucchini, and string beans cooked in water and put in blender.I am very excited about a new book "The Bieler-Burch Method" by Reigh Parker-Burch who was mentored by Dr. Henry Bieler.

4-0 out of 5 stars Satisfaction is Amazon
I read this book before but since it's so old and more than likely out of print I wasn't sure that I'd be able to find it.But Amazon had it.And the copy I got was in very decent shape. So overall it was well worth it and I'm happy I found what I was looking for.

    Thanks!

    Product Description
As ubiquitous in hospitals as stethoscopes, the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine is a guiding star for all medical students, junior doctors, and residents. The culmination of more than 20 years of clinical experience, and containing the knowledge and insight gained by more than 15 authors, the new eighth edition continues to be the definitive pocket-sized guide to today's clinical medicine.

Packed with clear, clinical management advice which is practical to implement at the bed-side, the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine is written in a clear and didactic style. With witty, esoteric asides liking medicine to everything from the classics to popular culture, all the material is presented in a way that is instantly memorable and even easier to put into practice.

With extensive improvements based on reader feedback, the new eighth edition boasts even more black and white and full-color images, which are now larger to improve their clarity and ease-of-use. Mindful of how doctors' training is constantly evolving, a new chapter on "history and examination" explores this relevant critical skill in depth, enabling you to elicit as much information from the patient as possible. An expanded radiology chapter features improved images, and new topics are devoted to new cancers such as noscomial infections, and further common surgical procedures. The references have been thoroughly overhauled with "key references" identifying the best places to start when researching the subject, and all references are fully accessibel via the supporting website.

Loved and trusted by generations of doctors, the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine is a reassuring beacon of wisdom, knowledge, and skills, that is forever in your sight. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Science & Art
brilliant synthesis of key issues in internal medicine + fine british humour + profound insights and poetry --> in an easy read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete
Nothing on ME (CFIDS). ME is a common and extremely disabling NeuroEndocrine Immune Disease associated with two retroviruses, rare b-cell lymphomas, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pen, stethoscope, OHCM, ready to go!
Own it and you'll forgive me if you think I'm carried a little bit away

Pros - really a pocket book, fits your coat and isn't heavy
Covers the main topics of Surgery, Emergencies, different Internal Medicine specialties (Neuro, Cardio, Rheuma, Infecto, . . . )in a great way
The first part is really awesome: not only for its bed-side manners, but for their words in critical thinking. It goes on and on: the authors remind you every other page that you're treating patients -flesh & blood people- not illnesses. And they don't do it in a "oh-boy-lecture" fashion, but with phrases and mind exercises

Cons- it was impossible to cover every disease here. But you`ll find some uncommon conditions in the eponymous section (which can prove useful while in the rounds or for the on-call-quizz-attending). And please keep in mind: it is NOT enough for learning Medicine. You still need to work hard and study. This a "reminder" for themes you've already read or an "introductory review" for the themes you'll eventually check afterwards.

Tip: buy it w/ OHCS Oxford Handbook of Clinical Specialties: Book and PDA Pack (Oxford Handbooks Series) and you're done! 'cause it includes the other main specialties as ENT, Pediatrics, OB/GYN, Orthopedics...

5-0 out of 5 stars Ninja of a Book
A perfect book -a true gem.
Concise, packed with the essentials that you have to know, very, very well written ..with a smidgen and a dibble of humanity that puts medicine in a clear perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars studying for final and for nuc med boards
It has everything a Tech needs to know. It doesn't go too indepth, the pictures are pretty recent compared to other books, and good images of very particular things you need to know. Case studies in the back are great for quizing yourself, pearls give great highlights, and the tables in the back of great to know information with QC, NRC codes/regulations, etc are easy to understand and gets you the important info for taking your boards and almost any test you'll take in your Nuc Med Course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I am a Nuclear Medicine technology student and I highly recommend this book. It doesnt contain some of the most basic information but as long as you already have some basic knowledge of the nuclear physics and nuclear medicine itself, it is a great book. I has standarized protocols for various exams and gives which come real handy; also gives you the dosimetry for each exam which allows you to see which the critical organs for various exams are.
    Lots of pictures and examples
I highly recommend this book for anyone who is going into the field of nuclear medicine

5-0 out of 5 stars Essentially Great!
The book is really popular in the Nuclear Medicine Department and with the doctors who aren't comfortable reading Nuclear Medicine. This is quite simply a great reference book for anyone working in Nuclear Medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best
Mettler's book is the best!Don't get the Requisites. This book is all you need for residency and boards.

5-0 out of 5 stars A clear concise nuclear medicine text for the radiologist.
Concise. Easy to read. Excellent images. Three simple phrases for an excellent textbook. I was able to easily master and use this textbook on my first month of nuclear medicine and kept it "handy" for its tables and images. The pearls section at the end of each chapter were excellent for directing to truly key points. It is an excellent textbook for the _radiology_ resident and a good introductory textbook for the _nuclear medicine_ resident. A nuclear medicine resident would probably want to get a more detailed and comprehensive textbook. The chapter on PET was a nice addition to this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I purchased this bood as part of the requirments for my Masters degree in food safety.I feel it is very well written and covers the points very well with many examples.Every word is of importance and necessary. For a study book for epidemiology - this is a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gold book!!
HENNEKENS is a very didatic book in Epidemiology Methodology, easy and simple to read and understand and very complete. All advanced courses in Epidemiology must recomend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite engrossing for a small textbook
This book is a clear, concise introduction to the use of epidemiology in medicine. It incorporates modern ideas in epidemiological thinking, providing an overview that is up-to-date and thorough. It delivers a lot of information without being dry, and is engrossing enough to read straight through instead of being another textbook to thumb through.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant introduction to medical epidemiology
Although having graduated some time ago I just keep returning to this well written and crystal-clear undergraduate book on basic epidemiology. This explains clearly also the most basic and important statistical approaches in analyzing data, although leaving multivariate analyses mostly out. However, that might be considered as a virtue as well beacuse the book stays at a very simple level and thus not scare you off it.

5-0 out of 5 stars For any student on epidemiology and biostatistics
One should not be afraid regarding the edition (1987). It is still a powerfull tool for any student on epidemiology or biostatistics. Despite being not a huge book, it is comprehensive enough for students of any leveland perhaps as a companion to established professionals. You can read itpage by page as a novel or search it for details in the planing andexecution of an epidemiological research. The author is well known for hiswork on important trials in medicine and that makes him an expert on boththeorethical and on a practical basis. ...
