Great for review, but so many errors!
I liked this book, especially the way it is written with case presentations.However, I could not believe how many errors were in this book!!Did they not have an editor?I would find myself reviewing items, and thinking to myself, "I don't think that's the correct answer".Sure enough, when I would look up the answer somewhere else, I was right...and the book was wrong!How could a MEDICAL REVIEW book have SO MANY wrong answers???It wasn't just one or two, it was MULTIPLE errors per chapter!! I started to make a list, wanting to send the errors into the editor of the book, but never got around to it.I found myself double checking my answers elsewhere.Not good for those students who might not realize the answers are wrong!Shame on you, Swanson!

This is all I needed to pass the exam
I used the Swanson 6th edition as my only study guide to take my first recert after 7 years.I am in private practice with no hospital and no OB. Only see kids > age 5.I took one week off work prior to the exam and studied with the book 8 hours per day.Then I went to the online prep questions that you have access to by purchasing the book.I scored twice the minimum passing grade and actually got 100% on my obstetrics!Although I agree that there were some errors in the book, they were obvious.Definitely a good purchase for me.

The ultimate review source is an understatement. The book is a real deal.
I have the Fourth Edition 2001 and it is voluminous enough, the sixth edition is on the way. The book is very well designed, each subject is served with 10 to 20 or so questions, followed by a short management problem.The answers to the questions are all well-referenced to credible medical authorities, such as the CDC, WHO, and the like.

The most noticeable aspect of the book is the confidence of its authors in reasoning with the reader with regard to their choices of answers. That reasonable analysis rendered many blurred fields easier to tackle.As an example, the Ethics subject was reduced to two basic governing criteria: professional scrutiny and public scrutiny. As such, many ethical questions were answered, as if they were algebraic problems, yielding quantitative answers, with fewer uncertainties.

Even though the book was devoid of any drawings or graphs, it embarked on simple and neat itemization and recapping of the principal points.As you advance through the close to 700 pages of the Fourth Edition, there is a sense of predictability of both style and content.

The most fascinating aspect of the book is the high level of dedication of its authors and their adherence to the highest ethical standard in rendering management solutions. The drugs are prescribed when and if they could do no harm, on hierarchical basis of their efficacy, from first choice to least, and the dosing, frequency, and duration of medication were mostly covered in many spots.The absolute contraindications of prescribing or using medications were unequivocally stated in unbiased and balanced presentation.

The book's main theme that a ["normal" person is someone who is rarely investigated] reflects the philosophy of the authors and its genuine connection to real, normal people, most of whom never been in doctor's office unless they were compelled to go there.

Aside from the lack of graphics, which is even a plus in this case, some if not most of the clinical cases were exaggerated with annoying simplicity and poor humor.In many spots of the book, the authors added the option: "no body really knows", in the multiple choices, which appeared over simplistic and annoying. Hundreds of questions emphasized the percentage rates of increase, decrease, or difference in incidence, causation, or correlation of factors and diseases in cocky and challenging manner that emphasizes numerical memorization over objective reasoning.

In a case of schizophrenic patient, it describes structured details in the patient's delusion of "being chosen by out-of-space creatures, who were looking for him for 400 years, to make him the King of the Milky Way". The same patient was described reasoning with the caring nurse, who declined to kiss his hand, by "threatening her to use his out-of-space fellows to wipe that nurse from existence by a sort of laser weapon." You would assume that a schizophrenic patient would have too fragmented mind to come up with such "coherent" scenario? I seriously doubt that any schizophrenic patient would be able to structure such elaborate dialogue in a state of illness.

In another case of factitious disorder, the book attributed many naive and ridiculous statements to a malingering patient that even defy the relative common sense of such class of patients.You could go on and on through the clinical cases and find such artificial structuring of clinical setups that seldom happen in real life. Even the most demanding and burdensome patients retain plenty of common sense than this book make them appear. I would hope the sixth edition would be less outrageous in describing clinical cases.

Now, I got the sixth edition, I am glad to have both editions.The sixth edition is colorful and have clinical photos.The authors made grave error in deleting the classical and descriptive synopses of the clinical cases of the fourth edition. For example the following invaluable statements are among many similar statements that were replaced by dry and rigid three-word titles:
"I Watch My Diet and Run 5 Miles Every Day, but I'm Still So Fat That I Can't Stand Looking in the Mirror."
"Hell, Doctor, It Seems Like Everything Causes Cancer! So Why Worry?"
"My Doctor Has Me on a Diet. So Please Leave the Nuts and Cherry Off of My Banana Split."
"I Quit Smoking, So Why Am I Still Coughing?"
"Some Wheeze, Some Don't. But It's Still Serious."
"When Not to Say No to Drugs"
"Papa Smear: Who Is That?"

The author also retained the obsolete multiple-choice option of "all of the above" or "none of the above".In their opening case, they stated a doctor-patient interview that sounded too dumb to be included in a new revised edition.In the same opening chapter on "Family Influences in Health and Disease", some of the answers were ill-chosen and misleading.For example, Problem 3, question 4, page 2, a pregnant women with HIV asks the doctor about the bettering the future of her baby. The book recommends that the doctor should advise that patient that perinatal transmission of the HIV virus poses the child's greatest risk.In explaining that choice, the book offered vague and unconvincing explanation.In the fourth edition, page 615, the book offers more positive outcome on the transmission of HIV from mother to baby. It cites the 70% to 80% of infants born to HIV mothers who will not be infected even in the absence of prophylaxis.

Excellent review, even if you are not a family doctor
I felt the need to review general medicine, and this book gives you a good dose of it.What I like is the frequent use of tradename of drugs in conjunction with generic names.I am tired of going to cme courses where lectors are forbidden to use tradenames.Then you wonder what drugs are your patients using.In real life, you have less than 10 minutes to see a patient, and not enough time to look up every drug you run across.So you can save yourself alot of time by only reading cme's thathas both generic and tradenames.

I am about 1/3 of the way through the book.It is quite current, brief and to the point.The important points are hit 2 3 or 4 times.The details of the cases are discussed well, often important points are repeated 2 or more times.Yes, there are editorial typos, but you can catch it by reading the discussion (swapping choice a for e, etc).

I am not a family doctor, but do enough volunteering that I need to keep updated in family practice.I would strongly recommend this book for physicians of all specialties to keep current with changes in medicine - and be aware of the drugs that your patients are using.I am loving this CME activity - much better than the years of medical school and the dreaded internship.

As for paying $600 for 89 credits of cme - that is a bunch of poop.One can get tonnes of cme's on medscape for free.

i don't work a shift without this in arms length
I'm an er doc. I do not work a shift without this at my computer. It gets right to the point and doesn't beat around the bush and so works well for the ed.

Great Reference
I am a Emergency Room Physician Assistant and I find that I use this book almost every day for reference. It has been well worth the money.Altho it is one of the less expensive texts I have run across. It is small and easy to carry around.Make sure to put your name on it or it will definitely grow legs and be adopted by someone else.

Essential reading
This book was given to me many years ago by a dear friend. I did not, nor do I, have cancer but rather other health issues.At first I was reluctant to read it thinking it would not be applicable for my situation. I was definately wrong.This is one of the best books I have ever read.As such, I have given this book to many people over the years who are suffering from cancer amongst other illnesses.This is a MUST READ!

Important Life Lessons
I first read this book in 1986 when it was published.I gave it to a friend, but I bought it again to read it because the information is just as timely today.The mind-body connection is the most critical element in the body's physical health, but so few medical doctors recognize this relationship.Dr. Siegel, an experienced surgeon, shares his knowledge and experience in making this connection, helping his patients achieve wellness despite "odds" or "predictions."Every person can benefit from the knowledge and wisdom contained in this book.

Ok, rather than call Siegel a quack, let's just say he resembles a duck.If you're into new-agey, non-scientific garbage, then this is the book for you.Personally, I found it works quite well as kindling for the BBQ.

Don't overuse it
This is a good review book and it helped point out some weak areas that I had to do further studying in. One mistake I made was making this text my main part of studying for the boards, I went through some sections several times and was doing fairly well on the practice exams. What I did not realize is that I was starting to recognize the right answers since the questions are used over again for the online banks of questions, so when I took the board exam my score was actually lower than what I was getting on the practice exams for the book. If you are making this the core part of your review and your practice scores from the book are not above 80%, make sure you take some practice tests from other sources to evaluate your knowledge base for the actual board exam. Overall, a solid review book.

I scored in th 98% after this review
I used the book for my Family Practice Boards in 2008 and did better than before.I read it once and only underlined what I didn't know but thought was important.2 weeks before the test I took 10 pages of notes on those underlined items.I also saw many questions from the practice exams for the residents.You should review the last 3 years of the inservice exam.I sent in the $20 and received the CME.The entire book is questions with explanations and I was never bored.

Helpful, but certainly not well edited.
I just finished the book.I prefer to do questions when studying for boards.It is a good book to use to study just prior to the boards and helps get you in the mind set of thinking in terms of questions.
My biggest gripe about the book is that some of the answers were just plain wrong...and the explanations that were given to substantiate the wrong answers contradicted the answers.There were some typos as well.Having some noticeably wrong answers does not give me a whole lot of confidence about the other answers that I was learning from.

okay, but not great
I used this to study for the recertification exam in the summer of '09. I passed the exam, but I'm not sure how much this book helped. It focused a lot of questions on certain diseases that were not on the exam, and some diseases that were hit multiple times on the exam were never mentioned in the book. Also, like other reviewers have mentioned, there are numerous mistakes and dated practice guidelines in the book. If I had to do it over again, I would try a different book.

Leave all TCM foundation texts and stick with this book.
I have to admit that I read many textbooks about foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine both written by foreigners and translated from the Chinese Text but this book of Giovanni is far better. Firstly, it is COMPLETE in content of TCM principle, whatever in the TCM knowledge you will see it here. It also explains in detail of the certain aspect that other text doesn't offer.

Secondly, in this book of Giovanni has pictures illustrate the type of the patient with different pathogenic evil which I love this feature because it visualizes those who study.

Thirdly, there are Tips for each diagnosis type so it helps and makes diagnosis easier for practicing.

Fourthly, what I found in the other text particularly in the Chinese or from the Chinese version they are more narrative and ambiguous, you may feel like you are reading a novel or something so philosophical, ending up with nothing in the head but confusion. This text, instead, is written in the way of standard western textbook, there are charts, tables, pictures and illustrations. The content therefore are written in better explanation and concise, this is what people like you and me are familiar with.

Lastly, you will learn something else in the book from Giovanni's practice experience. There is no perfect textbook in the world that makes you know Everything, practice makes you perfect. How grateful we are that he shares his knowledge and experience from his clinical practice in China to the readers. It gives us a shortcut. I feel we are like his student and he is our teacher.

In a nutshell this book includes TCM foundation, theory, the discussion of meridians, pathogenic evil, pulseand tongue diagnosis, herb formula, acupoint for treatment. What I found about acupoint chapter is that it doesn't tell the point location, it tells only the function. However this is not a big deal since TCM practitioner needs to have special exclusive textbook of acupuncture, we also need exclusive diagnosis and herb formular textbook, other than this, this book is comprehensive and perfectly suite with the TCM practitioner and those who are interested in TCM. I have to say again that I have to leave all those foundation books I bought before on the shelf and just stick with this book. I'd rather give 5 stars but the lack of point location I rate it 4, ..a big.. big.. 4

Simple, Straight Forward, Easy to Understand
This textbook is very easy to understand.It's written in a very clear and concise manner.The occasional diagrams illustrate the points very well.I also like the "summary boxes" after each detailed section.

Giovanni Maciocia is confused
I grew up with Eastern medicine, and have studied Taoist classics in depth for over a decade.Maciocia tries to substantiate his understanding with excerpts from various classics that had radically different perspectives and paradigms, making this book inconsistent and incoherent.His repetition of the same ideas over and over does not make his incorrect and shallow understanding of TCM correct or deep; it's just mind numbing.The material of the whole book could have been covered within a hundred pages or so without losing any information that is of any value instead of spreading it out over a thousand pages.This is a bad textbook for TCM students who want to seriously study Eastern medicine. ... Jean Carper, author of FOOD, YOUR MIRACLE MEDICINE, is herself a miracle of modern medicine!Born in 1933, she is, at this writing, 77 years old, and not only a living advertisement for the miracle medicines in food, (and of this book, FOOD, YOUR MIRACLE MEDICINE!), but ALSO a living, breathing example for all the wonders of her other books, including STOP AGING NOW, THE FOOD PHARMACY, JEAN CARPER'S TOTAL NUTRITION GUIDE, and several other books on nutrition and health. She wrote a column on nutrition, (eagerly read by many -- including me!), for USA WEEKEND magazine for many years, stopping only because she wished to devote more time to her other activities.She has not only added years to her life, (and probably many other people's lives), but has added life to her, (and their) years.On her official website, she looks like a young 55-65 year-older.Her genuine and friendly smile, (something that can't be faked), says the information in her books work!

FOOD YOUR MIRACLE MEDICINE gives an almost encyclopaedic amount of knowlege about almost every food imaginable, in an easy-to-understand format.Yes, Ms. Carper DOES go into some scientific detail...but, (another miracle of sorts), it is always understandable scientific information.Ms. Carper is not only a nutritionist, but she is also a natural teacher.A true teacher, in that she makes everything she writes -- no matter how complex -- totally understandable to the lay-reeader. This is important in any book on a technical subject, and the workings of various types nutrition in the body, can certainly be seen as technical!

This book is like a Nutritionist that sit on your bookshelf
Jean Carper has literally put so much valuable information into this book, its like an encyclopedia for food. There is a section that has pros and cons of every popular and most common foods, another list for each foods vitamins and nutrients, telling which foods are the best for each vitamin group, but that's not even the best part. The miracle cures in this book are priceless, every home should absolutely have a copy of this book. It's a big book and the information is endless, once I opened it up, I got so intrigued, I literally could not put the book down. Big Pharma seems to have a pill for everything and I do not like to just jump on that as a solution without checking all my options first. This book will lay it all out for you and show you the better way, so you can throw your prescription in the garbage where it belongs. Eating right is now even more powerful now that Jean has shown me the way!

Food your miracle medicine
I've had this dog-eared book on my shelf for years. It's interesting and informational. Recently sent my daughter in Texas the book. It was received in a timely manner and she stated "in like-new condition".

Food and Pharmacology
I like this book. It looks at the pharmacological effects of food. Most of us don't think about food that way. We know that a cup of coffee might speed us up a bit or that prunes may have a laxative effect, but that's about it. Jean Carper lets us in on the rest of the story. She even cites a study that I did while affiliated with The Institute of Human Nutrition at the Columbia University Medical School. While there, I researched the effects that foods can have on producing headaches and also how foods can provoke a wide variety of physiological and psychological problems. This book is a treasure chest of information regarding the health benefits of foods and the disorders that are caused or exacerbated by what we ingest. Recommended.

Fantastic book!
My MIL gave me this book several years ago, and I have referred to it time and again since then for all sorts of medical ailments (mine, and those of people I know and love).I have literally 'fixed' a health issue I was having by not combining 2 foods, and my MIL addressed her tendency toward depression simply by eating Brazil nuts daily, as recommended in FYMM.This really is a 'Miracle Book.'I'm a fan of Western medicine, to be sure, but this book tells you how to live with and/or treat many ailments by simply modifying your diet.A must-have, in my household. ... Decent for Emergency Medicine 4th year medical school rotation
I used this book for my 4th year medical school ER rotation. I was looking for a book that could fit into my pocket, similar to "pocket medicine" for IM but had a broad amount of material covered that was easy to review. Those that liked pocket medicine will like this book too!

Positives:
-Book has subjects listed as complaints with common findings, important history information, Physical exam findings, Lab findings and Management. Includes trauma and some critical care aspects.
-Topics can be reviewed very quickly after seeing a patient.
-It is better than pocket medicine, which is more for extensive work up of disease rather than ER management.
-Covers pediatrics
-includes a very extensive reference section for easy topic look up.

Negatives:
-Print is very small, around font size 6-8. It may strain the eyes for some.
-It is all black and white, with no pictures or figures, but does include various tables
-It does not cover common ER procedures like I&D, suturing ect...
-For what is is worth it is expensive being ~$50 new.
-The mini binder the book comes in does not have the book title printed on it. The image seen is a piece of paper that accompanies the book (you tape it on?). It just makes the book look like a date planner.

Overall I thought the book was good and a worth purchasing. Some other students used the tintinalli mini book, but it was much larger and cumbersome to place in your pocket. I think this book is great probably for medical student and intern/2nd year ER residents.

Im a PA and during my PA school I did a rotation in Trauma and Emergency Med at Mass Gen, where a lot of the writers of this book practice. I found that the information in this book was pretty much on point and provided a quick and general reference to a lot of the things you see in the ER. I studied this book and got all my pimp questions right!

Organized by Chief Complaint
I purchased this book, and the ED loaned us the Tintinalli Manual.This book is great for quick references to help come up withthe best differential based on chief complaint.It is good for studying so you can focus on the most important issues with each major presentation.The Tintinalli is nice for reading to learn the info, but cannot be referenced as well while seeing patients.

The best pocket reference for Emergency Medicine
This book gets it right! The chapters are arranged based on chief complaint, which is how problems present in the ER. Within each chapter, a list of disorders that are potentially fatal and serious are offered, as well as the investigations required and management for each one. Unlike the Sabatine internal medicine book, this one is not cluttered nor ugly. The layout is crisp and organized, and everything is easy to find - given that it is an ER book, it should be since time is of the essence!

However, this book is not perfect. The font is extremely small, like its internal medicine counterpart book. Furthermore, it does not have a great section on fractures and dislocations, particularly on their management.

Overall, I recommend this book to anyone who practices in the ER. From students to seasoned veterans, this book will be useful for just about anyone.

Detailed, Advanced First Aid
I have recently read a few books on first responder type medical aid for wilderness scenarios ... and this is BY FAR the best.If you are looking for a book that goes well beyond even advanced first aid, and presents the material in a pratical way using common languge ... this book is it.There is a balance with books like this on either being too elementary (i.e. "dumbed-down") or being too academic (i.e. filled with technical jargon that goes over the head of most people), but this book is a great balance between the two.The author has a gift of explaining things in a very straight-forward fashion.

The best guideout there. Period.
As a Wilderness EMT and wilderness medicine instructor, I often find myself asking myself questions or being asked questions that I wouldhave otherwise never conjured up. Needless to say, I wouldn't carry this "bible of the backcountry" with me everywhere I go while out enjoying mother nature's splendor, but it certainly has its own spot in my emergency medicine library collection! Well written, easy to follow and understand, and the graphics are clear and concise. A great resource for any Wilderness First Aider, WFR or even WEMT!

Very good how - to - book!
This book covers anything and everything that could happen. Very detailed. I would highly recommend this book!

Outstanding advice for hikers and other outdoor adventurers
This new edition is a standard handbook for anyone participating in outdoor activities or eco-tourism. Dr. Auerbach is an emergency surgeon and authority in wilderness medicine. He maintains a superb website called "Outdoor Health" (link in the first Comment).

Dr. Auerbach offers advice on both minor and major injuries, from shark and snake bites to lightning strikes, wound care, blister management and procedures for a being stranded by a snowstorm in your car.

His prose is clear and careful, and he is a great believer in prevention as well as a great resource for emergency treatment of patients far from professional medical care. An example of his writing:

"One gives up very little (nothing, really) and gains everything by wearing a helmet in the appropriate circumstances. Freedom of choice is a selfish concept when one considers that the head-injured victim forces loved ones or society to provide care and the financial resources to manage the injury and rehabilitation, and sadly, support for the disabled person, who might have avoided most of the injury by wearing a helmet.

"There is no excuse for not wearing a helmet approved for high risk (for head injury) situations. It is no different than wearing a seat belt in a car or washing your hands before you eat. Prevention is the name of the game. Having cared for many people with devastating head injuries, most of which would have been trivial or absent if a helmet had been worn, I can only hope that we do what it takes to mandate helmet use in every reasonable situation for which they would be of benefit. That is a necessary and appropriate use of the law."

If you are only a weekend hiker like me, or take on more challenging pursuits, get to know Dr. Auerbach, either on his blog or better yet on this excellent guide.

Had to read for English 100
To the reviewer that couldn't get into the story by the first 20 pages or so...I felt the same, but had to read for college English class. Aroung 25% of the way into the story, the connection was made and I couldn't put it down!

A Very Special Story, Beautiful Told
This is a multigenerational story of two American families, the Lamartines and the Kashpaws, told in interrelated short stories. If you've never been on an Indian Reservation, you'll feel you have been when you've finished this book. You'll find love and desperation here. You'll come across despair. You'll see so much more than you bargained for when you started this book that is oh so special and oh so beautifully told.

Utterly and Completely Useless for Boards
This book markets itself as essential to learning for the Boards/Step 2 CK, along with the FM shelf. I can't comment on how useful it is for the shelf exam, since my med school does not require taking a FM shelf. However, it is completely useless for CK. None of this subject material was on my CK, and the question types did not at all approximate what I encountered on that exam (on which I got a 95/230 using mostly Step Up to Medicine and USMLE World). The publisher/author should stop marketing this book as essential for the boards because I'm sure they know it is totally irrelevant to the Boards. Their dishonest marketing does a disservice to medical students who already have a lot to study for boards without wondering whether to add Pretest FM to their list. I give it 2 stars only because it was a decent adjunct to Blueprint Clinical Cases in Family Medicine for reading for my FM rotation.

Good Review for Shelf Exams.Great Pocket Size
This has good overall review questions for the family medicine shelf exams.It fits well in the white coat pocket so you can bring it on the wards with you.The questions are pretty reflective of what i saw on my shelf exam.DOesn't help as much for board exams.

A Great Pretest for Family Medicine--Beats Case Files, Hands Down!
This was the only book I needed to get through Family Medicine.I tried reading CaseFiles before this test and, as in Internal Medicine, I didn't retain the information.It's difficult to keep the vast details of an entire case in one's mind weeks after merely reading about it.

If you are the kind of person who does well by looking at sample tests before you take the real thing, PreTest is much better.I swear some of the questions in here came straight off the shelf.Yes, I was still stumped sometimes.But after reading this book literally the two days before (no sleep!), I passed the shelf with room to spare.It takes about 48 hours or more to read the thing if you don't stop.I don't suggest taking such risks, but this is a super-helpful book to go over just before the exam.

Not Dahl's usual caliber story.
I don't think I would recommend this book to the youngsters for which it was written. George spends the day making a concoction of every conceivable substance in his home, intending to feed it to his grandmother and make her explode. The consequences are not as disastrous as they would be if one performed this stunt in real life, and are in fact rather, well, marvelous. My fear would be that kids would definitely try this at home, resulting in deceased pets, local wildlife, and possibly grandmothers.

Childhood guilty pleasure
I love Roald Dahl. I always felt guilty reading this book because George essentially tortures and kills his grandmother, and I have two very nice grandmothers. But in all fairness, George's granny is a bitch.

A marvelously fun children's story
I somehow missed this short novel from Roald Dahl when I was younger. Now that I've read it, I can say yet again that Roald Dahl is a master of children's literature. His whimsical wordplay and fantastical elements always make for excellent read-alouds, and "George's Marvelous Medicine" is just plain fun (Sidenote: I just finished reading this aloud to a 12-year-old boy, and his face lit up with a smile many many times as we read it, so this book will appeal to kids of many ages!). The illustrations by Quentin Blake aptly reflect the playful nature of the story and text. While this is not my favorite from Roald Dahl (I think "Matilda" wins that prize), "George's Marvelous Medicine" is just a fun and funny read. I highly recommend this, for children and adults alike.

Devilish Fun for Tweeners!
Some books are good reads for children as well as adults. This particular book isn't one of them.

There were a number of things I didn't like about it. My most harsh criticism would be that I found it boring and predicable. ((And I won't even mention the that the idea of using household toxins as a "medicine" for grandma got my mom antennae twitching. Can't help it, it's an occupational mom-hazard.))

But this is just how the book struck me as an adult. And I'd be remiss not to mention that my 10 year-old daughter thought was great. She thought the drawings were very funny, and she got caught up in the story so that we read the all of "George's Marvelous Medicine" in one day.

So THE SKINNY is that this is an amusing book for young folk, but not so much for adults-- at least not this one. The writing is good. The book is an excellent Read-aloud. The reading level is 4.0.

Would you like to read George's Marvelous Medicne by Roald Dahl? It is a mysterious story and takes place at a farm house. George's grandma is grouch and George wanted to make her nice. So he cooks up a potion with lots of unusual stuff. My favorite character is George because he is smart and like to mess up things. He is not like other boys because he has mean Grandma. the benefit of time
I recently asked the newly retired COO of a Chicago area hospital for a book that might help me understend the evolution of hospitals in the U.S. He told me to get a book from 1984!! I'm glad he did -- well written -- very interesting -- and, given the benefit of having watched the heathcare industry evolve since it was written, enlighening.

Slightly dated, but as prize-worthy now as it was then, and still quite relevant.
This book should have been required reading of politicians and talking-heads engaged in the health care reform debate a few months ago. The Social Transformation of American Medicine has aged only a bit. The last chapter is out of date, but its predictions are somewhat chilling--that doctors have more to fear from the corporate takeover of medicine than putative reform.
Starr takes a long historical view of the medical profession and the role of doctors in it, paying attention to ancillary issues like hospitals, public health policies, among others. Starr's book should shake loose a lot of commonly held chestnuts about medicine in the US, most prevalently that doctors always enjoyed unprecedented social status or that doctors used to operate in a free-market atmosphere. As the title suggests, Starr points out that medicine and medical care has transformed from being home-based to being, more or less, "industrial" (albeit controlled but what might be considered a cartel). Key to this transformation is the sovereignty accorded this profession, often at the expense of health care's accessibility, not to mention cost.
Starr is not afraid to mince words or leave inferences unstated. In particular (as stated before) that doctors always operated in a free market free from government regulation (indeed, regulation is one of the ways doctors "captured" medical care,that government intervention/investment had nothing to do with the reputation the US enjoys in experimental medicine or research, that health care "crises" have long roots in American history, and that the role of corporations in present-day medical care has again transformed American medicine (and will continue to do so. Part history, part sociology, and part public policy analysis, this book provides much useful info in judging the heal care debate.

A relevant history of medical care systems
This outstanding history of the system, or lack of it, of health care delivery in the USA is exceptionally relevant now, 2009, during the health care debates. It's a long, detailed book, but it's objective and well-referenced. Although this reflects history up to 1980, many of the forces set in motion during the period covered continue to this day. Some details are fascinating, e.g., the author believed that the best opportunity for national health care came in 1974, in motions proposed by Ted Kennedy but likely to be credited to Nixon who was then enduring the revelations of Watergate. That scandal and the opprobium then attached to Nixon probably can be blamed for the death of that attempt.

A Physician's Must
I came across this book first as part of my academic studies and initially felt it to be purely historical with no basis for current public health implications. But, if you read the text fully and deliberate on the issues present the information presented give you an accurate view of how the current geo-political atmosphere in US healthcare has been shaped to this day. The reader can see how many transformations have taken place. Namely, medicine as an artistic medium not highly regarded to one that is the primodial center of scientific acheivement. Another example is hospitals as refuges for storing the deceased to now institutions of recovery and training for young physicians. Starr divides this book into 2 parts - the rise of sovereign profession and the struggle for medical care. In invidual chapters he highlights the key historical events and intermixes this with insightful commentary where practical implications can be drawn in regards to the profession as it stands today. As a healthcare practitioner who has worked anywhere from managed care to community health centers to the private sector, I feel this book has helped me realize largely why the system is the way it is. Minimally useful, atrocious editing
What can I say?This is one of the worst medical texts I've ever come across.Unfortunately, it was required reading for my FM clerkship; otherwise, I would have stopped reading about three chapters in.The authors are very preoccupied with evidence-based medicine; obviously this isn't a bad thing, or at least it wouldn't be if they would occasionally make some clinical correlations!The text is chock full of information about studies, meta-analyses, numbers needed to treat, etc. etc. ad nauseum, but where is the information I actually NEED in the clinic?It's all well and good to tell me the sensitivity and specificity of a given diagnostic procedure, but how about telling me how the procedure is performed?And it seems that every other page is plastered with tables of useless information like this -- various percentages and statistics that will be forgotten as soon as they're read.The truly useful bits must be hunted down and sorted from all the fluff -- and even then you'll end up referencing Bates half the time.Simply put, this book is all theory and little action.

Oh, and to add insult to injury, the editing in this book is, no kidding, the worst I've ever seen in a medical text.I think there must have been at least one typo or grammatical error on every page, and some pages had as many as four or five!How is this possible in the FIFTH EDITION of a textbook?It smacks of carelessness.

In short:Unless you are absolutely required to buy this book, avoid it like the plague.

Ehh..It has its moments
This book was required for my FamMed clerkship.I like the general format and flow of it, but it doesn't provide much in the way of strong clinical guidelines "rules of thumb" that you need to make decisions in the real world; memorizing the endless epi / study data presented is useless.

Fatal Flaw:This is the FIFTH edition of this book.(If I understand that correctly, it means it has been re-edited and re-printed 5 times.)The number of typos is absurd and unacceptable.One or two is understandable, but after a while, you start to get the feeling that no one really cared enough about this book to bother with proof reading it.Spelling errors are annoying.The WORST is when they use an abbreviation(eg ATFL) and define it as one thing (anterior talofibular ligament) and then use it to mean other things a few pages later (anterior tibiofibular ligament...fyi, these are not the same ligaments...) SO ANNOYING!

Good Content Many Type-O's
The content of this book is very good. There are many, many spelling and formatting type-o's that make it a bit hard to read. The publisher needs to pay more to have the book edited. Other than the editing problems, I have no complaints.

Great resource!
I used this for my Primary Care Clerkship in 3rd year medical school.It was an excellent tool to give you all the basics of all areas in family medicine and primary care.The reading is easy and there are great figures and tables to give you clear and concise information.

Poor source for Family Medicine
I am a third year medical student who was required to purchase this text for my Family Medicine clerkship.I found this book to be a very slow read that was very thick on statistics and it did not flow well.I found myself spending a couple hours sorting through the information only to feel like I did not understand pertinent points about specific disease processes.I would strongly recommend finding another source for learning the basics of Family Medicine. ... I thought this book was very good. It covers common topics found in family med, like cough, chest pain, nausea ect. Then it goes over the basics of some commonly found illnesses. I like the way it goes over each topic, it gives a lot of detail with out making each section too long. I really like this book.

this is a nice book to read during your family med rotation. we didn't have an exam at the end, so this was mainly for my own edification. the chapters are brief enough so that one could get through several in an evening. covers a broad spectrum of problems encountered in a family practice setting.

Worth its price...
I like the Blueprints series in general.However, it might not be enough info by itself for the national shelf.So, supplementing with the Case Files books is always a good idea.But, the book is a good general overview and a great place to start your studying.This book definitely helped me get a great score on the end of clerkship Family Medicine exam.

For a hands-on approach to better health, the kit has an audio cd, dvd, and a large deck of illustrated "cards".The kit (approx. $25 new) is practical and immediate, almost a cliff's note version of the book. You can try any one exercise just by viewing any card in the deck. You do not need to be physically fit or able-bodied to do many exercises either.
An incredibly affordable price to pay for better health for an individual or family.I've read the book one and a half times.Itwould make a nice complement when you feel well in order to maintain your health, or if you require explanations as to why the exercises work.

A safe and effective way to stabilize one's energetic field.
I have tried following some Tai Chi and Chi Gung/Qi Gong books and videos with less than desirable results.Such Chinese Energetic Healing methods require that one have the guidance of a master to adapt the exercises for each individual.Reading Donna's story in the accompanying booklet, I discovered that I am sensitive to people's energetic fields.Also, two metaphysics practitioners had told me that I am sensitive to energy.
I have found that none of the exercises that Donna Eden highlights in this kit depletes my energy or causes strange sensations.This has been a great introduction to energetic medicine.This a very well put together kit: DVD, CD, cards, booklet and glass pendulum in a black velvety pouch.

It Works
I have tried the methods given in the DVD. Wow! All methods work.

There are 1 technique that is very good for releasing thoughts called Forehead Neurovascular Points. Hold your forehead with both hands. There is 2 lumps on your fore head near the hair line. 4 other fingers on one lump. Thumb on the temple. Use both hands to cover temples and the 2 lumps, left hand on left temple and lump while right hand on the right temple and lump. Without moving your hands, think about something bothering you until you find that you can think no more. Funny part is that you stop thinking after a while and the most interesting is you won't think about the same thing in the future anymore.

If this method works for you, you should try the rest.......

It is not much wonder that over 200,000 copies of "Vibrational Medicine" has been sold. This book is one of the best resource books on the market.Aside from that, Dr. Richard Gerber is known in the field of alternative medicine through his over thirty years of ongoing research, private practice in internal medicine, and an author of many books on the subject.

As a former psychosynthesis therapist I used many of the modalities that Dr. Gerber addresses.I can attest that they work and the results are life changing.In "Vibrational Medicine" he takes the basic information for further understanding incorporating history, healing modalities, tools, interconnecting, and much more.This isn't a book to read, it's a book to study and use as a resource.

Although ancient in thought, "Vibrational Medicine" is the forerunner in modern medicine. Dr. Richard Gerber's (1954-2007) legacy lives on.This is an important book to keep in the reference library.

Solid Reference
Have had for ten years and refer to it annually at least. However, it is now outdated and the field of alternative electro therapies requires a comprehensive update. Who is up to it?

Marvelous , life changing book
Dr. Gerber M.D. must be recognized not by just a comment on a review section on Amazoon but officially by teaching societies of medicine and alternative medicine combined.
The most astonishing part of his argument was the negative entropy section which I found marvelous mathematical approach to prove why our bodies don't decay as we are sitting by our computers. A life force thereore must exists which is magnetoelectric (not just electromagnetic) and causes order from chaos. He proved soul or something in that realm exists which as long as it is present, body(or any living entity, including planets, suns, solar system) will keep their order. This same force can be directed by anybody to affect anything even enzymes in a test tube or increase growth rate in plants, feelig better in patients or even healing.He also showed from research available that this force unlike magnetic force which increases the rate of any enzyme, indeed increases activity of specific enzymes which produce more energy in cells and decreases activity of specific enzyme which decrease energy production.(Ie; force is intelligently determinestic!).That alone also answers some long awaiting questions in regarding accident vs determinestic events. Because book was written over 12-13 years, there were few sections of repeat which reader can easily bypass it but I will keep thisbook as refrence book because everytime I reopen it I found new items that I again rediscover. Section on kirlin phoptography is arguable, I did the photogrphy removed a piece of leaf but didn't see the hollogram from Hungrian work. Maybe frequency was not right. But overall based on double blind research and math, book deserves a top rating and thanks to a Dr/healer which devoted his life to bring enlightement to humans, showing them life force is something out there and universe is not such a one way road based on big bang theory and chaos(all is lost in the end due to positive entropy). He opened windows of hope to all of us scientificlly.

We are holograms, thus we interact holistically via energy interference patterns. The book talks about homeopathy, where the smaller the dose (from a greater dilution), the more powerful the concoction. What a concept!

It talks about Kirlian photography which captures the bioenergetic processes on film. If part of a leaf is cut off, the picture still captures the outline of the whole leaf (its electro-print). Or if the leaf has a hole in it, the Kirlian photo will show a complete leaf within the hole of the leaf!

My background is in mainstream, Western Medicine. I began learning subtle bodywork techniques in 1995. The instructors in most of the workshops were not able to explain the mechanism of action of these therapies, even though the techniques were very effective in eliminating chronic signs, symptoms, and disabilities that my patients suffered. In my search for information of which I could translate to my patients so they could understand what I was doing for them, I read the 2nd edition of VIBRATIONAL MEDICINE. Recently, I purchased the 3rd edition for further updated information. These books have been extremely enlightening in my understanding of the attainment of optimal health, and also some other non-convential factors which may contribute to the causes of deformities and disease. Must Read
Meditation as Medicine should be read by all adults.These concepts should be part of the mandatory teaching of school kids.Practices like this would have a significant impact on health care costs bringing them down to afordable levels.Learn how to take care of yourself and avoid major health problem with the information contained in this well written and documented book.

On Time Delivery
One of my major complaints with some of the Amazon vendors is they send things by pony express.This is one who gets things out on time.Book also was in great condition.

Completely unreliable
Try the Kundalini exercises in this book, if you are interested, but please don't believe anything this author says. He just make things up. Really! For instance, he says that the brain is just millimeters away from the upper palate (no, the nasal cavities are above the palate; the brain is higher up, behind the eyes and forehead). He says that "Even in the vacuum of space, sound waves vibrate to the outer recesses of the universe, toward infinity." (Say what?! Sound can't travel without an atmosphere.) He says that neurons divide and "all the cells in the brain are replaced every year." (Complete nonsense--neurons don't divide like other cells.)

If there were just a few errors, and they didn't have anything to do with his main theses, it wouldn't be too bad, though kind of pitiful. But these falsehoods are just a few of the most obvious. And each of them is there in order to support the author's beliefs, to bring the authority of science to his book.

How does he get away with this? Why do publishers, reviewers, and readers support him? I don't know, but, please--people!-- don't be suckers. There may be some merit to the practices he describes, but this book is a farce.

Best Kundalini yoga book I've ever read
As a veteran yoga instructor, I have many many books on yoga styles and philosophies. One of my students gave me this book for Christmas, and it is the BEST book on Kundalini yoga that I've ever read!Dr. Khalsa gives us specific kriyas (movement, mantra, and breath patterns)as prescriptions for healing the mind/body and activating the chakras.He also gives us detailed descriptions on how best to meditate for REAL RESULTS. A great gift for us all!

I tend to highlight important parts of my favorite books; this book has so many highlights that it's just crazy.....a MUST READ!

I bought this for my aunt, she likes these types of books and information, says for the subject this is one of the better authors and well known for being honest in his opinions. This issue was a reprint and a fine copy, good deal and shipped fast.

Great book, very helpful.
My mother owned this book years ago and I found it very informative and helpful. I love anything that has to do with natural cures and this book really has some great information that works. I purchased this copy for my niece because she was intrested in the healing properties of vinegar. Great stuff!

Folk Medicine- A New England Almanac of Natural Health Care...
A second look at "Folk Medicine"... makes me realize just how fortunate we are to have such a wealth of information available to us?The various health issues/conditions which D.C. Jarvis, M.D. presents are as important (and controversial) today as they ever were back in 1955. This is a medical doctor of a different era who allowed himself to evaluate the 'common sense' traditions of care with an eye for scientific evaluations. These anecdotal traditions were proven reasonable and beneficial when applied as simple methods to the care of herds for farmers who were searching for answers to improve the health and improved production outcomes for their cows. The simplicity of using brown, apple cider vinegar, honey, and traditional herbs to garner fairly remarkable results will cause the reader to pause and remember his own granny's remedies and review the extravagance we now have incorporated into our own health and well being.This should be a must read for all people concerned with health and wellness.
